His talent will NEVER be matched again. I've been a vocalist a long time, and I still can't get his vocals or Cornell. Frustrating but shows their greatness
I love Cornell but Layne was hands down the best vocalist of all the grunge bands coming out of Seattle at that time and, arguably, one of the all time best in rock, period. Gives me chills every time I hear him sing. RIP.
though it isn't grunge let me introduce you guys to Jeff Buckley...(i mean,if you guys haven't heard about him already) in my opinion he has one of the greatest vocals of all times

My 2nd favorite Grunge band behind Soundgarden. I've always liked Cornell's vocals and writing better, but Layne and Jerry harmonies together are something special.
As a kid growing up in the Seattle area through the grunge era, Alice in Chains always stood out to me. It was a really sad day when we lost Layne. He was truly one of a kind
Yo Trevor me too. I'm sure we saw many shows together and I still have the stubs to prove it. Did you ever catch Gruntruck? How about BOT? I saw Alice record some of their first stuff at my friend's studio in Issaquah. The called it tree fort studio.
My first intro to Alice in Chains was at one of many 80's and 90's Bumpershoot Festivals. They played on the 'Rock' stage beneath the Opera House, as a metal head i didn't know what to think about them. They grew on me though. Someone posted five or so songs from that set on youtube.
Layne's relationship with the mic stand is pretty legendary. He was known for grabbing on to that thing like he's holding on for dear life and just belting his shit out.
Loved Layne's vocals. Powerful! Written by Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell, this song is about when you love and hate someone at the same, and all the emotions in between
Check out Alice in Chains: Rooster, Rain When I Die, Nutshell, Would?, Down in a Hole, I Stay Away, Bleed The Freak, Man in a Box, Them Bones, Angry Chair Also check out their MTV Unplugged if you wants some Live performances.
I agree with this list. Nutshell they should do unplugged. Rain when I die and would are 2 of my favorites. The chorus of rain when I die Layne is amazing and Jerry's guitar just blends so perfectly.
If your gonna listen to nutshell you gotta listen the album version from jar of flies. Layne did alot better performances than mtv unplugged. Its just romanticised cause he was quite clearly dying. Without context it's not a sterling performance. But as fans we know he was one the greatest of all time, but his addiction wore him out and its shows in unplugged. Saying that I Do LOVE the mtv album, and 'Frogs' captures the whole feel of the album alot better than nutshell. Jar of flies: Nutshell is just perfect.
The line "I live for you but I'm not alive" is one that really strikes home for me. I love their song Them Bones but they got a lot of great songs. This is one of my favourite bands. Wish I could have seen them in concert. RIP Laine.
AIC lead singer Layne Staley had a tragic life... a heroin addiction that consumed his life & career. He passed away in 2002. The bassist Mike Starr was also ousted from AIC in 1993 and lost his life to addiction in 2011.
Jerry Cantrell is one of my all time favourite guitarists, his solo album Degradation Trip is great too, he has a new solo album out soon I believe. Layne's vocals are just legendary RIP
epitome of grunge is Mudhoney. AIC started out on the metal, almost poodle metal circuit. Just listen to the last couple tracks off facelift....trash. But otherwise great band. Just not the epitome of grunge.
A little info on fry vocals, since y'all seem to be interested and like them: Fry vocals won't damage your voice if you do them right. It's when you force air through that you end up injuring your vocal chords. It took a lot of regular vocal training for me to unlock my fry, but when it came, it came out of the blue. I didn't even really focus on it in particular. Just started singing songs with the fry in them, and found I could sing/scream along without any strain. There are a lot of vocalists who unlock their fry this way, without specific training (like Tatiana from Jinjer). They just perform enough that it comes in. Main rule of thumb is that it involves no strain or pain. If you feel any at all, stop. There are instructors who teach fry vocals as well. Melissa Cross is a really popular YT vocal coach who is known for this. If you're straining doing screams, it's not the proper method and ya gotta watch out. Corey Taylor from Slipknot uses an improper method of screams (basically just full on yelling) and he's had to tone it down to save his voice. Beastly, but dangerous. It's just one of those techniques that clicks after a while. You can learn it along with regular vocal training, but it's best to get the basics of voice and breath control down first.
Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain and the often forgotten Mark Lanegan... Late 80's and 90's Seattle really put the light on amazing singers
soooo this was this first time for you two and AIC… i apparently got into the channel late for you guys. I’m trying to catch up. But as i have mentioned in other videos, Lex really seems to enjoy this type of music. Brad gets more into the lyrics and meaning. It seems like a great combo not just in your life, but channel as well.
This is your best reaction to a song yet! I am so enthralled by your reaction and comments. This is one of THE greatest live performances by any band ever. Layne's voice was one in a billion. Most vocal coach reaction channels are floored by this performance - say he does things vocally that defy biological science - stuff that cannot be taught, just pure grit and soulful talent. Lex picked up on the "blues" vibe. She is SO brilliant in her music ear and analysis. She mentioned Sabbath and made a comparison - that was spot on!!! Chains was heavily inspired by Black Sabbath which in turn had a lot of Blues influences in their melody and bass riffs. Then add the passion and soul tearing emotion from Layne's vocal talent and you can definitely get a blues undertone. Like Brad said, you can feel the pain in his voice. And like Lex said - when that sounds and feels genuine, it makes for the best music. Alice In Chains is one of my all time fav bands and certainly my fav of the "grunge" bands. They had so many great songs and legendary performances.
Alice is such a talented group. They have so much chemistry together and so much feeling and emotion in their music. Def keep deep diving, you won't regret it! RIP Layne & Mike
RIP LAYNE AND MIKE STARR, they may be gone but music definitely lives on. 30 plus yesrs ive been listening to AIC, even started playing there music because jerry is unreal on guitar, and i feel aic running through my veins when im playing🎸🎸🎸🎸
This song is just about some girl he dated briefly, it's _not_ about Demri. If I remember correctly, he met Demri around '89 but didn't really start getting close to her until right around the time this was filmed actually. This would be right around the time he first tried dope, though I believe it's before that. But I don't think this song is about _serious_ heartbreak as much as it's just Layne venting lyrically through the eyes of a fictitious stalker/killer. Definitely *NOT* typical Alice In Chains subject matter.
He had my favorite voice of the era. He had so much power and expression in his voice. Add in Jerry with backing vocals for a lot of songs and it was quite beautiful....Also love that really bluesy feel
Layne’s voice was just amazing! His and Chris Cornell’s were one of the two most powerful voices from the grunge era! Crazy how guys from that era like Layne Staley (Alice in Chains), Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden and Audioslave) and Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver) all suffered tragic deaths!!! Suicide or overdosed. And there were others from that era as well. Some called it The Grunge Curse.
THE BAND, in my humble opinions. I heard them for the first time, when I was 23 and realised that I had never listened to music before that. My favorite is Nutshell. You can check their live unplugged MTV version - it is legendary at this point.
I think the way the stage is lit, where you mostly just see Layne and his mic stand and Jerry with his guitar in the spotlight really adds to that feeling you mentioned where it seems like they’re just alone in a room instead of on stage in front of thousands of people.
Thank you for this! Alice in Chains was one of the most unappreciated bands of the 'grunge' period but (in my opinion) one of the best. Lane spoke from his soul about his life and sadly many parts of his life were dark and sad. He was such a passionate and incredible singer/performer. Even at his worst he would blow you away. Then there's Jerry who is... basically... a guitar God. Please do more.

I agree with Lex the website Genius saying it’s from the perspective of a sociopath is wrong. The band never called themselves sociopaths, the writers at genius did. It is about an unhealthy relationship. No one should make anyone person there world, but when you’re in love especially in the beginning you feel everything so much. I was glad genius interpreted the line about peeling her face that way, I knew it wasn’t literal but didn’t understand it, but I like the explanation they came up with. The only time I ever heard of violence from Layne was when he punched a fan who kept punching the other audience members and giving the Nazi salute. You’ve got to love Layne for punching a violent Nazi.

One of the things that made Grunge so special was the raw emotion and honesty. Growing up in the 90’s this music made me the person I am today and it honestly saved my life.
AIC were never 'grunge', something that never really existed anyway, it was just a marketing label. However' AIC were most definitely in the metal camp before the so called grunge term ever surfaced, later they mellowed a bit, more in the hard rock genre. At first every band from Seattle was labled as grunge, hell they even tried to do it to the Melvins, and later just about any guitar/bass/drum rock band got labelled as such.
Remember the year it came out, GRUNGE was a lot of wild heavy sounding voices. I believe the girlfriend he was singing about, they had some issues, they tried heroin together and she overdosed a few years before he did and he never forgave himself. DAM shame. He ended up living as a recluse in his apartment, their original bassist went to his apartment. He also had drug problems. but people think he was there when the od happened. Just Sucks that we lost Brother Lane this way. Thank you for your review of this awesome brother.
Growing up near Seattle, I grew up with this band , went to a few parties that the guitarist Jerry Cantrell used to play before he was in AIC , Layne Staley had one of the best and most unique voices to ever grace Rock music , Jerry does a lot of the singing on their albums since Laynes passing.. check out some of the newer stuff like “ Your Decision “

Alice in Chains is a wild ride and a radio dj had one of the best descriptions of a song ever with one of their songs- Music to build pyramids by. And, yes. It was to their opening track Grind off their self titled album.
Never really thought about it before but what Brad was saying about how Layne was treating his mic like his lover reminds me a bit of Jim Morrison too. But yeah the richness of Layne's voice from deep to fry is so damn good. Def recommend checking out more of their stuff for sure! Brad would really like their MTV unplugged set 😉

Seen the new Alice in Chains with Korn in August 2019. At Darien Lake, NY.
Alice in Chains Rabbit Hole! Let's go! Also check out "Chloe Dancer" by Mother Love Bone, another Seattle band. #RIP Lane and Andrew.
I haven't seen a mother love bone reactions that I know of wish someone would
YES Mother Love Bone!
Mother Love Bone is my favorite Grunge Band. Right behind them is Alice In Chains and Mad Season. I got a chance to see Alice In Chains in a real small bar in East Lansing in the early 90's. It was soooooo cool.
Love this vid because I feel like you felt the emotion. Whatever the words. Awesome vocal performance. You both got that. I like the breakdown.
Dat girl... She has ears for REAL music.
Welcome to the Grunge Era. He is a beautiful Singer and the Band is talented as well. Love them. Listen to Man in the Box. The first single released and played in heavy rotation on classic MTV
I’m sure it’s come up in your recommendations but Pearl Jam’s “Black” MTV unplugged is a must watch.
Right, if you want emotion from your eyes and ears!
I KNEW i wasnt dreamin. Thought i seen yall do this one night last week and i been lookin 4 it the past few days. Yall got to do a recorded version to see how it sounded to us when it came out. Glad yall are hittin AIC. Rain when i die, down in a hole, them bones, would, rooster, sludge factory, over now, frogs... Any of them should get u interested in the band. Im excited to see if yall really start listenin to em on ur off time. One of my favorite bands
One of the cooler bands from the Grunge era, Brad's got some old man ears.
Shout out from south Louisiana, love y’alls videos. Alice in chains is one of the only two grudge bands i listen to. The other corrosion of Conformity. 🤘💀🤘
Just found you guys, that was an awesome reaction. MTV unplugged Alice in Chains would be awesome.✌💜🎶RIP Layne
Definitely "Man in a Box" and "Them Bones".... Those are two of my favorites, but they have a ton of GREAT songs!
Layne STALEY R.I.P. the dirt album is 🔥
Rest Easy Layne Staley, one of the best damn singers of all time, his voice sounded like 1000 in one.
This whole concert was awesome!
This guy is absolutely my favorite male vocalist of all time. Please go down that rabbit hole. You will love all of it
One of the things that made Grunge so special was the raw emotion and honesty.
@@namegoeshereorhere5020 lol I don’t need a lesson about Grunge thanks. I lived it.
@@mercurymachines4311 Obviously you do, lived it as well.
This is one of the top 10 live vocals ever. Hands down a masterpiece.
I really appreciate the dynamics in this song. I also really like the unconventional sparse beat and how they filled it with the music and vocals.
Now that you’ve seen him at his best, see him at his worst but same haunting vocals. Got Me Wrong or Sludge Factory from the Unplugged set!
Great reaction, never forget when I first discovered this band about 12 years ago. First heard Would and I was blown away. Have loved them ever since. Great reaction guys 🙋🏻♀️👏🏼👍🏼🙌🏼💜🇨🇦
Thank you guys!! been requesting this for aages! Knew lex would like it!
I love me some Alice in Chains, (It Ain't Like That Anymore) from the same concert Live at The Moore will also blow your mind. RIP Layne you are missed by so many.
Lex giving big Gwen Stefani vibes when imitating Layne!
I LOVE This Review! Wasn't sure this should be your first introduction into Layne And Alice In Chains. But oh my was i wrong. Great Video and Reaction. Your perspective on this song and performance made me love this song in a whole new way.
i watch a lot of your videos, but don't comment often. Great Work. Love your Channel!
Alice in Chains is a wild ride and a radio dj had one of the best descriptions of a song ever with one of their songs-
Music to build pyramids by.
Girl you make me laugh! Your rendition of Layne was awesome :)
Great band!
peace
Thank y’all so much for finally getting around to AiC!!! In my opinion, the grunge era gets no better than them! Their entire MTV Unplugged performance is one of the best I’ve ever heard. Laynes voice will always stand the test of time! Much love you two!
