I love watching other drummers play the same song , the small intricacies and differences that we have as players is a wonderful thing to see and hear , I don't care what style music is played it's the playing I love to watch .

I started as a heavy metal kid age 12 learning guns ,acdc ,status quo, thin Lizzy all by listening and playing along , then it was iron maiden , then I found the album among the living by anthrax , I nearly died ,I had never heard double bass at such a speed , I then found slayer and Dave lombardos drumming , I saved up got a second bass drum and that was it , I had to learn every slayer song , then I found the death metal band deicide , and napalm death , again my mind was blown , blast beats were just becoming a thing and learning how to play by ear was a whole new challenge , I learned to play double bass upto 280 BPM ( with average starter strap drive pedal that came with the xpk kit I had ) when I discovered my first set of high end bass pedals I was so happy because double bass was easier ( not easy ) just a bit easier, and I could play insane speeds, however I thought well where do I go from here ? I've learned to play the most physically and technically challenging style of drumming there is , i got a little disheartened for a few months , then one day I heard a techno drum and bass song ( I HATED ANYTHING TO DO WITH DANCE MUSIC ) my brother was into mixing and doing the DJ thing with vinyl and decks , so I got him to tape me a few songs in that style and before I knew it I was mixing that with metal and hip hop beats , then I started to listen to all the police stuff , that pushed me to Bob Marley and the drumming on his records , it was brilliant , it was at that moment I realised that just because I could play all the most physically taxing and technical style of drumming didn't mean I had learned it all ,
I love listening to drummers in genres I'm not a fan off, individuality as a drummer is the aim , look how Rooney plays ,laid back almost after the beat , and he hits softly , love to see other drummers playing .

      I totally agree 👍
The Police are a band I love and hate!
      I love their music .
I hate trying to cover them either on drums or bass and vocals. I'm always scared I'll never do it justice. But it is great fun when I manage a passable impression and there are no musicians in the audience!
Peace and love and apologies for waffling ✌️❤️🤗

Maybe it's because I'm brand new to drumming but it sounds pretty complex to me. The variations in the hi hat seems pretty difficult, especially the little trills on it at the start of every verse.

      @Astrospect
You may be new to it but you already have 2 very good tools to use. Firstly you have a really good ear. Picking out Stwert Copelands little high hat nuances is proof you already listen and understand. Second you have a huge pool of information available to you. The likes of Andrew Rooney, you just can't go wrong with his knowledge professionalism and humility. This sort of help wasn't around in the 70s all we had were records to listen too and other musicians. It wasn't like the help instantly available we have now.
I wish you all the very best on your journey and If can can be so presumptuous as to offer a tiny piece of advice without patronising. I will say " be yourself!" don't try to emulate other drummers because whatever you play, you will sound like you . And that's a really good thing.
      ✌️❤️🤗 Peace and love.

Stewart Copeland is a total original for me. Never really heard anyone like him.
    Any other fans!?
Different recording approach here. Only 3 mics. NO snare mic! 2 x overheads in Glyn Johns position and a kick mic outside the bass.
Vintage Ludwig. Old out of tune heads. Snare head literally about 7 years old (at least).
All cymbals are completely cracked (including those old hi hats). Ride is not cracked.
^ Full disclosure info in case anyone was interested! :)

This song is so simple yet so complex. I've played drums on this and I more often play bass and sing this. They are both a huge challenge to me .
It's obvious why you are a professional drummer Andrew. I am not a professional musician but have been gigging 40 plus years . I have a huge respect for musicians of your calibre Andrew.
This song is so easy! ....until you try to play it!

This song sounds like it would be easy to play on the drums, but it is far from being so. The technicality of it is easily missed due to the simple sounding bass and guitar. Even the timing of the bass guitar is crucial especially during the verses. You make it look and sound easy, Andrew! Right in the pocket all the way through, all while reading the sheet music as you go. Very impressive! 👏👏👏👏👏

Moises is an awesome tool. I stopped using it often enough to keep paying the $4/month. But, when all else fails it is a super tool for extracting the tracks you need out of a song. It does much better with some songs than others. But for the most part it works well.

i'm curious, is there something about flat sounding drums and dry cymbals that drum teachers in particular play and like? Both of my drum teachers 15 years ago had their drums setup and tuned just like yours and whenever i went there I would bring my own snare (tuned high and ringy like 311) and tune their toms up higher to give them more personality, they didn't like me for that but it was boring playing on their stuff the way they had it.
