Larry Mullen Jr is, in my opinion, pretty underrated drummer.. Or let's say he is not mentioned as much as he should... Even though the patterns are pretty straight forward singles in this tune, they make the whole song propel forward..

Learning this without the sheet music would be a nightmare - those snare hits don't fall in a regular pattern it seems.

They do a thing similar to what Keith Moon would do which is that they're played to respond to the vocalist. Crazy thing here though is that they respond to both the guitar and vocalist. Once this is understood you can play in the style rather easily but it's an absolute nightmare for a drummer to play the whole thing exactly the way it is off the record.

i cant read at playing speed, but the sheet music helps me still.. i can memorize the rest and use the sheet just for the snare hits and part changes

One of my low key favorite drum tracks. I’d love a video where you film the process of you learning a new track. Would be interesting as a new drummer to see how are you aggregate what you’re hearing in the track verse what you’re reading on the sheet to arrive at what you think is the finished product. Does drumeo offer this version? And does it play through like that? I’ve been using Songsterr and it plays through the sheet music like you have but it’s not accurate to the original recording. Playing it like you did and reading the notes seems like a great way to get better at reading music since the snare hits don’t have a recognizable pattern. Keeps you on your toes.

Larry Mullen Jnr. was one of my biggest drumming influences when I was young. Loved the mix of disco and rock beats in their early music.
Taught myself all the early stuff. Still know Sunday Bloody Sunday pretty well.
Roger Taylor of Duran Duran was also a huge inspiration.

I think that this is the first song I ever heard U2 do. It seems like I was watching some tv show where many performers were raising money for some worthy cause. I think it was the 4th of July in the early 90’s, but I can’t remember. I was taken by their sound, and you recreated the percussion that makes it such a powerful piece.

Going solely by the sheet music, it was a little off time there. Tho, that looks like the sheet music being off since your playing stays with the audio.
Measure 83, according to the sheet, it looks like you hit the snare at the end of that measure (note 16) instead of at the beginning of the next measure (M84, note 1). And again on note 5 of measure 84 of the sheet. It seems to correct itself by the end of the next line. It's like the orange thing running along the music got a little ahead of itself for a bit.

Indeed. Because it's a political anti-war song about the Catholic versus Protestant battle of the Republic of Ireland versus Northern Ireland, they used a battle marching drum beat as the song's base. INCREDIBLY difficult song to drum, even with sheet music in front of you.
Hardest thing here is to remember the exact snare hits, there isn't a really obvious structure to keep in mind. You have to listen to it many many times or you simply have to sight read it.
