How to fix Stuck / Frozen Virgin Media V6 Box with Green / Amber Flashing Light

- Hi, this video shows you the steps I took to fix my Virginmedia V6 box which had the flashing green and amber light, and it was stuck on the welcome screen. As you will see in the video the fault then caused a black screen (no display).
This was filmed 8 months before being released on RUclips and the box is still working perfectly.
Both the HDMI ports on the TV and the HDMI cable are still in use today so it was definitely the box that caused this initial 'no display' problem.
Hopefully if you do the same steps that you see in the video then it may also fix it for you. If you find a different way to fix it then add it to the comments to help other viewers out.
Many thanks, Vince. Хобби
Brilliant job, this is Christmas Eve and I was told the engineer wouldn't be here till new year. Your video helped me fix the problem 👌🏻👌🏻
Yessssss another My Mate Vince video!! oh no, it's only 7 minutes :(
bij unpluging the hdmi you force a new "handshake"
Thanks for this. The reset buttons worked for me. Even VM didn’t instruct me to reset.
Thanks for this! Long story short: unplugging both ends of HDMI & unplugging V6 & TV from mains then leaving for 10 mins (while I did something else) did the trick. Cheers! 👍
The presenting problem was no picture, only on-screen graphics/menus. Doing the usual off & on again gave only the 'Welcome / Willkommen / Bienvenue..." & "Starting Up" screens then the main menu. If I pressed TV, BBC1 would show but as soon as I changed channel no picture again, only on-screen graphics.
When boxes in the US go dark a true power cycle can work. Turn off unplug and while unplugged hold down power to turn on this drains all power from the unit and can reset somehow. Worked for me when nothing else would. All black or boot loops. Love the vids watched them all. Thanks for the content Vince.
Thanks Mate, Had this problem today and did what you did and it's all working again, thanks again.
This worked! It's tricky, I tried plugging into a different HDMI port then it came up "installing software" but then back to "starting up" cycle. I turned off then on with ethernet unplugged and coaxial out, changed HDMI port. Then connected ethernet and coaxial at "starting up" and it did different. It started downloading data, finished then all channels back up. The EPG was missing but later came back on by itself and all programmes deleted (which I don't mind as long as it works).
Thank you so much.
I guess you just gotta play around trying different sequences, changing hdmi ports, removing/reinserting cables, hold the power light strip plus button whilst rebooting... tricky but it works.
Hurrayyyyy!!!! Thanks so much. I was messing about for 2 hours. No clear picture, then no sound. Took your tip and swapped to HDMI 1 from 2. Amazing! Back on.
That is so weird. I have seen this before, but very nicely documented. Cheers.
Youll never believe it . After spending around 50 mins changing hdmi cables and ports ,i ended up just unplugging the tv from the mains then plugged it bk in after 10secs and viola its working . Happy days .trial and error my friend
You just saved me a load of hassle, thanks for your video!
In the UK do you guys get TV programming from US and Canada??
Strange that this happened but at least you got it working.
CHEERS MATE..WELL DONE!!!
Thank you. It worked changing the hdmi.
Happened to me today on setup with my new V6 in Ireland. VM agents went home at 5pm. No suggested fixes working I'm afraid.
Great help mine did the same i though i had broken it just changed hdmi and it works thankyou
This can also happen with sky q. If you turned TV off and on again with box off and then powered the virgin box on would get same result as changing HDMI. It's almost like the signal is flowing the wrong way so nothing is received by TV. HDMI 1 usually supports hdmi arc which may be doing something.
What speedmaster was that?
Did you use tv arc with soundbar?
The virgin TiVo box did a similar thing at my dads house. the guy on the phone said the box was active and I had chosen he wrong HDMI slot on the tv, once I changed it it worked fine. but after a while it did it again, I bought a new cable and the problem went away, but then about a month later virgin came to swap the box because the box froze and needed to be replaced.
Hey bud . Great vid . Can u confirm that if i do the reset part at the end ,will i lose all recordings and planner ??
Hi Vince. My v6 box updated itself today so maybe yours did too and got itself confused?
HDCP has been a big problem with VM boxes, especially when connecting via an AV amp. Thought for a minute you were going to take it apart - you know it's not yours yes?
I have no lights working on remote and Amber light on v6 box, tv working remote not showing red light when any buttons pressed.
What happens if your sky Q box does the exact same?
Love the vids! But How comes everything in your home breaks? :D
for some reason i assumed my mate vince would have 65inch 4k all bells a whistles tv, on the wall with backlight leds. i thought it came as standard for all big youtubers😋😋
Mine isn’t showing any flashing lights, the router just has the white solid power light on and the v6 box is the same the power button a solid white light nothing else. Yet I’ve been say here for 30mins still looking at the starting up with the little red clock next to it on my tv screen. I’ve turned both off from the back, I’ve check all cables, I’ve turned both off from the plug socket etc and still nothing just the “starting up” and the white solid power lights on the router and actual v6 box. CAN ANYONE HELP?
Fukkin big cheers pal!!
👏👍well done job make fix.
sky+ boxes do the same thing you turn off both tv & box unplug everything leave unplugged for 20 seconds, plug it all back in the turn them back on & after the boot up sequence all works properly again
Thanks so much mate
I had a similar issue with a different device. In my case it was a hdcp issue resulting from a bad cable. The error occoured only everey now and then. My solution was a new cable.
You may have to go in to the settings and reset the v6 box has some time, you get a sink problem has I had to do this for pay per view( all you get is a black screen)
I think some tv hdmi ports have a preference for certain devices.
Bowdon they definitely do. They are also labeled on the back near the ports not all but some.
If you had turned off the tv a new handshake would have been made! Keep up the good work
I would bet they updated the box with new firmware and new encryption keys....by changing the connection port it forced a new handshake and therefore a new encrypted connection. HDMI data is encrypted, try connecting the box to a super old tv. Likely it will not work and say the tv isn't comparable with the HDCP keys.
HDMI box or TV
I had the same problem 3 HDMI cables later it decided to work
Thanks for that video! I'm now thinking why TV after unplug HDMI1 cable still doesn't show "No signal" message? I suspect TV MoBo rather than Virgin Box PCB at this point. Maybe corrupted data was send by HDMI controller inside TV and box became confused? Box after restart was behave fine.
Its was a single issue. Easier fix is to change the channel on the tv. We have the same issue sometimes.
I see your not using an HDMI provided by Virginmedia.
im thinking that it was a problem with the HDMI copy protection
imho it's overheating problem
BodziuM it’s not
Thats what happened to my virghin box when it upgraded. I had to put the hdmi cable into the other tv hdmi slot.
I got hd 2 turn change it to hd 1
All not working now website so can’t book Engineer
Give ur systems some ventilation for a start. I recommend getting a new tv Hitachi is a very poor quality tv set.
Staffs Woodsman PAZA Yeah with the v6 box sitting on top of the ps4 is a bad idea
HDMI has problems like micro USB
i think the problem was that the tv input was never switched off hdmi 1 to some other source and so it was stuck with old "handshake" info from the HDCP (the bane of home theater systems everywhere!) so it wasn't able to "talk" to the box to say "yeah we are protected send the signal".
sometimes its easier to do it yourself!
Looks like it's related to the signal hdmi provides the box or tv to say its on, cant remember the technical name 😅
fun fact, multiple vendors use this box style
There Virgin Media boxes are so shit it's unbelievable. Like early 2000's tech
me anastasia sally & irene cannot stop crying when we reacts camera zooms right to undies during live.
Maybe you should relocate that V6 box, not enough room for the heat to escape.
OMG!
this on the trash too
This logo makes me dizzy
1:18 help it works 1:30 mmmm
So many cable boxes are absolute garbage, it doesn't matter what brand. They're usually old, crammed full of layers of software making them slow as molasses both to start and to use, and tech support's only solution is to always just reset everything or replace it with another. Just another nail in the coffin of cable TV.
This happens with skyq all the time
Sky Q boxes are every bit as bad, they randomly delete channel guide listings for some channels, and lose network connection. They are junk.
blasphemer71 not for us
you need tvheadend not those boxes.
Virgin media boxes spout HDMI shit all the time, sometimes we get garbage picture. turn off TV Mains power and then turn on again and all good!
Iiojiijjjkkkkkikukkkkkkkkkkkkkkkjjjkkkkkkkkkkioiiiiikkkkiokkiokoikkikkkikikkkookkkkkkkkkk
You shouldn’t be pulling out HDMI cables with your equipment still turned on. Turn everything off first and then redo the HDMI stuff.
A 7 minute video to show you how to swap an HDMI cable. Bizarre
Virgin media? more like TiVo
Is this when the conspiracy theories start?
