- Wait a minute, this doesn't look like the Gerbert we all know and love (?).
It's actually the pilot episode that launched Gerbert's stratospheric rise to the tip-top of Christian children's media in the late 80s, and it's maybe a bit rough around the edges.
Yes, before the strange oblong pumpkin-chicken-nugget look, Gerb was just your average bright-orange muppet-looking thing, and even in this proto-form, he's as whiny, annoying, and oddly charming as ever.
This month on Too Many Tapes, come with me on a journey into the little VHS tape that started it all: Gerbert In The World Around Us (featuring Courtney, whoever that is)...

Gerbert’s older designs (including the one in this video) genuinely creep me out. His look here has the same lifeless, floppy characteristics of a Baby Einstein hand puppet, but less funny. It makes me appreciate the chubby-cheeked glow-up he received later on.
Well at least these Legends and Lore Puppets that are made with Vellux Blankets are conferrable and really soft.
And Bill Weisbach's pitched voices are charming.
