  • Chocolate and peanut butter. Wendy's Frosties and french fries. Broccoli and Cheese. These are all things that go together way, WAY better than Psalty and Colby. And yet, through the power of label synergy and some unholy amulet I have stored away in a cupboard, here we are. Two things that SHOULD NEVER HAVE MET have come together in a truly cursed VHS tape that's...actually way more boring than it should be.
This time on #TooManyTapes, let's take a look at Psalty The Singing Songbook's Flop Years as he tries to glom on to the unexpected and newfound TV success of Colby The Computer. Why do I continue to put myself through the Psalty Gauntlet? Nobody knows. Maybe I'm built different. Wrong, but different.
I blame TBN, honestly. Won't you join me in Colby's Clubhouse?

The fact that it’s canon that Psalty rawdogged it at least once with another giant anthropomorphic songbook and has three little lord-praising abominations of his own keeps me up at night.
Edit: I really need a gif of an irritated-looking Psalty slowly opening up his giant cartoony phone at 14:53. It would make such a funny reaction gif for a meme.

1:00 i've observed that boomer video makers in the 80s had this obsession with soda shops and chocolate malts. I understand it's probably a nostalgia thint, but there are so many other, better ways to do that other than using the soda shop motif. It's like a vision of heaven for boomers, a better way that they were striving together towards. (For their own gain of course rather than some altruistic desire to improve the world)

I didn't think hearing a VHS video giving a wicked burn to a bunch of kid's lack of dance skills would be so entirely delightful

I'm wondering what ended up happening with the animatronic. Maybe they just didn't have the money to repair it because all these operations were so slapdash. Those things are complicated and expensive, one element breaks and it's just done if you don't know what you're doing with it.
It's also interesting to see just how much worse the series that Colby ended up in looks than the original. Surely they could have done something to make the set look more like the original. Did they just completely strike it and get rid of most of the elements?

I found a fellow human with my strange obsession with puppets and kitschy kid shows. Please do a video on an episode on Quigley’s Village. I loved those puppets as a kid.

I used to watch Colby's Clubhouse religiously (pun intended) as a kid. What can I say? The songs were fun. It was like Barney only without the overuse of public domains songs. And I loved the opening theme song. It's just so soothing. Sometimes, I just listen to it because it brings back warm childhood memories and makes you forget about the tensions of life. I guess that's what it's essentially saying in the lyrics: "Come to Colby's Clubhouse to take an escape from the world and fellowship with other children."

I NEVER knew that these two titans of Christianity ever crossed over. (And I've got my fair share of Psalty and Colby tapes too)

I can't get past the fact that Colby, a computer, is okay with his friend Psalty purchasing and owning a computer (albeit a small, silent version), though it's also probably fine in this universe to own song books...as long as they don't move or speak.

Have you thought about doing the Adventures in Odyssey animated series, based off the radio series? That could be a great idea for a future episode.

I've considered it for some time, but I've come to the conclusion that Focus On The Family is still such an active negative presence in this country that discussing them and their output does more harm than good.

I loved that series as a kid. I might consider reviewing one of their radio episodes in the future.
