"Vincent Grey" was played by Donnie Wahlberg currently of Blue Bllods and was then formerly of New Kids on the Block. He lost a bunch of weight for the role and many people didn't recognize him. Vincent shot himself in the head immediately after the gun went out of frame. Brilliant direction to avoid the special effects.
You now need to rewatch the film knowing the truth to see how well it was done. Bruce only wears the same clothes he wore the night he was shot throughout the film.
Imagine every scene, Cole sees a ghost. Seeing ghosts is his problem, so, "You're nice, but you can't help me."
Red was intentionally used to denote an interaction with the supernatural, which is why the girl's mom was in red. She didn't have cancer. She was being poisoned. Munchausen by Proxy.
Haley Joel Osment was nominated for an Oscar for his role.

Another question is, why was all his stuff in the basement? That's not a comfortable place to put your office. However, we fool ourselves and rationalize that it's probably because of their deteriorating relationship. We also only see what we want to see! That is M. Night's message.

@@johncampbell756 That just further proves my point about our attempts to rationalize what we see. We've already seen in the beginning that the basement was used as a wine cellar. Also, the recording of Vincent Grey was clearly done in an office. Malcolm had to walk out at some point during the session to take a call. Usually, psychologists have an office that they work out of. We realize in the end that his things were moved to the basement and stored there because he died.

I love many scenes in this movie. But one that I've become more interested in over the years is when Cole is telling Malcom his secret. He's actually trying to tell Malcom that he's dead: especially when he says he sees them "all the time". That's why his words come back to Malcom at the end of the film. A commenter said that Cole is talking to us, but I don't think that's the case. He's talking to Malcom, about Malcom. But because Cole doesn't really know how to help yet, he doesn't have the tools to guide him toward the afterlife. He also doesn't know what Malcom wants at that point in the movie, which is a key part in helping the lost.

This became an enormous hit on its first release because so many people went to see it a second time so they could appreciate just how brilliantly they had been deceived on the first viewing. Actually, I think it's underrated, since so many people talk about "the twist" and not about how beautiful the story is, and how wonderfully told and acted. I think Haley Joel Osment gives the greatest performance by a child ever on film.

For me personally, existential dread, the tearing away of comforting delusions, is more terrifying than anything a psycho killer could do. The Australian actress Toni Collette is one of all time favorite actresses going all the way back to, Muriel’s Wedding. And all the way up to her stunning turn in Hereditary. She should have won the Oscar she was nominated for in my opinion; an absolutely brilliant performance in a brilliant film; a study on grief and sorrow, the weight of pain and disconnection. A tale of inevitability and the horror of the ties that bind.
Such a terrific artist, she never fails to disappoint and has never given a bad performance. I saw her in person on broadway and she’s simply phenomenal even up close and live. Anytime I hear she’s in something, it becomes something I’m going to watch. 👍

Malcolm's "life" ended a year before the meat of the story. The happy ending, in my opinion, is that poor, precious little Cole Sear and his loving, beleaguered mom Lynn are gonna be OK now that Cole finally met the right ghost. A man sent to his death because he failed to understand a previous patient who suffered from the same gift/curse of mediumship. And because he figures out how to genuinely help Cole, Malcolm finally gets some closure. He can let go of that fatal mistake, help his wife move on, and find his peace. The movie has a beautiful, if bleak symmetry.
I enjoyed your reaction so much, and I knew I would because I've been watching your channels for a while. I've seen many and I'm always grateful for the emotional ones. They allow me to remember my own original feelings. I fell madly in love with this movie when I saw it a week before it was released. I've seen it so many times since then it's absolutely ridiculous. And I still adore it. It's just really special.
My favorite thing to watch people react to is not the twist, it's the way their opinion of Cole changes. Lots of folks think he's creepy at first, then they realize something is happening to him, and they begin to empathize with him. "Oh, this boy is being tormented," you said. Exactly. You just wanna hug him and protect him.
It's a such a well-crafted movie about love and loss and pain and communication and human connection. In my book, it's an absolute treasure.

I believe the mother is affected by the ghosts as well but isn't aware of it, so she is tense and snaps at him when he says stuff that doesn't make sense. She likely blocked the door because he was opening it all the time and she was scared in the cellar even before the incident.

I remember when I first saw this film, which became a huge blockbuster by first time writer and director M. Night Shamalan. He became a star overnight. We were in the theater, my ex husband and I, it was a sold out show, and I’ll never forget how everyone, a packed house, gasped and several said “oh my God” right out loud when the ending and truth of the film was revealed. It was stunning and powerful and everyone in the theater was collectively moved. It was like a wave of emotion washed over the entire audience. When it concluded, everyone in the theater gave it a round of applause, including us.
To this day, this film remains masterful. The first of its kind to use this wholly original premise, it’s been copied, praised, studied and revered for decades. Nominated for a best picture award, which is very rare for a suspense/supernatural/horror film, it’s gone on to become a classic now, and highly rated as one of the greatest supernatural/horror films of all time. So cool that to this day, new people are discovering, being surprised by, and falling in love with this masterpiece in suspense.

And then once it is revealed, you finally realize that they never showed his back, throughout the entire movie, until the very end.

I think Malcolm using the word "bullshit" was an intentional move on his part, to truly impress upon Cole how important it is not to buy into hateful thoughts about yourself. He did this by shocking Cole with a "bad word", but it's also treating Cole like an adult, like he's worthy of respect and extremely forceful support in the face of such bullying. A kid as smart and mature as Cole, who doesn't seem to be getting respect or due consideration by the other adults in his life, would really respond to that.
    Great reaction!

  • @rockubtzer

Cole was locked in a dumbwaiter it's an elevator from the kitchen so the servants don't have to carry trays of food around the house. The cook makes the breakfast when it is done they send the servant upstairs. the cook puts the food tray in the dumbwaiter sends it up to the servant who then serves breakfast in bed. They operate with two ropes like the automatic curtains (pull one rope they close the other they open) one rope is up the other is down. this way they don't risk dropping the tray, back then there was no heat in homes and food got cold walking it up. the kitchen was directly below the dumbwaiter the heat from the wood or coal-fired stove went up the dumbwaiter shaft if the upper door was left closed the kitchen heat kept the food warm by trapping the heat at the top of the shaft.

I don't think it was a dumbwaiter. We had one in our house when I was a kid, and it wasn't full-person sized. It was big enough to hold food, and opened at about waist level so you could easily lift the food out.

It was a happy ending. Malcome could go to where he was supposed to be. Cole was able to help unhappy souls. The wife was now free to move forward with her life. And why doesn't Malcolm talk to Cole's mother. What kind of hours does Malcolm see patients and where is his office. Cole wasn't afraid of Malcolm because he thought he might help him and Cole couldn't see his wound. Imagine seeing this at the theatre. You can't rewind it. I really enjoyed your reaction. This was the first movie that the ending I didn't see coming. I asked all the questions you were all through. I couldn't understand why Malcom was just appearing every where instead of an office for Cole's therapy.
Something that most people don't pick up on in the beginning was that Vincent says "I waited for you for 10 years" Malcom had diagnosed him the same as he was about to do with Cole and hospitalized him. Vincent kept waiting for him to come back.

Her acting talent is on point & just riveting to watch on screen. It's one of my favorite performances. The kid actors are great too. Please give it a watch as I think you will enjoy the intrigue & mysterious storyline. It's a classic old fashioned ghost story, no graphic visuals or bloody violence like other modern horror films.
