I found an amazing, all original Martin D-28. I told them to not sell it. It was being sold by a 14 year old(@joshualovesbluegrass). He was selling it so that he could buy his own D-35.

The real story here is Grandad selling his D 28 that he's owned for 53 years. And doing it to help his grandkids. Deep respect. He's also a fine player.
What I love and appreciate about you, Jeremy, is the integrity you showed. Obviously, as a trader you need to make money but you did not rip them off. Everyone was happy. Great job!
Wow mate,I instantly fell in love with that family.Just good honest hard working people. That young man has been brought up well and he’s a heck of a player.Big respect for you too Jeremy, their is something in the water down there.👍🏼👍🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
That was a lovely trade, Jeremy - Grandparents are beautiful people.
Jeremy, you are the most honest guy I have ever seen in my life, why tell them your second offer from the get go, I know why you did it and I respect that. great man you are.....................
I noticed on Joshua's RUclips channel that he got the D-28 back ... so now my curiosity tells me I gotta go find THAT story
Did you find it? It's incredible. It's on my channel too.
We don't really "own" anything, except hopefully our word.
What a sweet man.
Nice patina! I wonder what he paid for the 35, the kid. Yea, set the action, use the right strings and make sure the grooves in the nut is right. Our Dad left us recently with several Martin's, starting back from the 40s. He bought new. Pretty sweet seeing I play. )
The new Billy Strings
“Perfect at the house when I’m by myself” 😂 I felt that
Connected on a spiritual level there
That kid is so respectful, talented and speaks like a grown man. I'm impressed. If I had the money I'd buy it and save it for him when he gets older so he could buy it back once paw paw is gone and hes an adult. I own all three of my grandfathers guitars so I know how important it is
YES, I HOPE HE KEPT IT! THE YEAR I WAS BORN ! ❤I REALLY HOPE HE KEEPS IT? IM NOT DONE WATCHING ....... Peace ✝️ love ❤️ and human 🌈 🌎 kindness! GOT A GRANDAUGHTER? LOL 😂 Kim-n-Carolina.
MUCH LOVE!

A future Billy Strings right there. If he ever wants it back, let him buy it.
My thoughts exactly, gotta sell it back to him as an adult to complete the amazing tale.
So I should buy MORE guitars because I don’t know how many grand kids I’ll have. 👍
I need no less than 15 top tier guitars, for the grandkids. What am I a monster?!
When your wife gets pissed when she sees another guitar coming through the door, just say "I'm doing this for the grandkids!"
I’m gonna go with this plan!!
I think everyone needs a minimum 9 acoustic guitars. This would be 3 groups of 3 (each group sounds different) and you need 3 of each in case something happens to one and it needs to go in the shop. You must stay prepared for any type of guitar emergency.
Just don't buy any cell phones, Xboxes and PCs - they cost you a fortune today, tomorrow you pay even more...to somebody to take them away....
He's going to want that back years from now after his grandpa is gone
I think you're right.
He should've kept it. It's a memento for the grampa
FACT
Sure thing
He might, but I don't think so. He's having the guitar he wants and he'll be perfectly happy with it. When he's older he may think of the value of the D28, but his grandpa made it very clear that he has four grandchildren. The kid will understand. In fact, he will always share this moment with his granddad. A granddad with a lot of love for all of his guitar playing grandchildren. Is there a better way to remind him of his generosity than this? I don't think so.
"Do I need to count this?" Damn. There are some good people in the world and these are a few of 'em.
Such genuine, honest people. Made me smile when grandpa said "I don't know no sheppards"...the beauty of small town living all of your life. Really, really enjoyed this, thanks!
Ps My Dad sold his 1930s Martin cause he needed $$ before he married in 1947 but he always had a guitar or 2, but not like that Martin. He wanted a Gibson, we got him one & he played till age 98 1/4.
I was fully in the "he can't sell it" camp right up until I heard Joshua describe his pastor's D35. 14 or not, he's a real player and he knows what he wants to play. He clearly needed to own that 35. The memory of standing side by side with grandpa when he sold his D28 to help Joshua buy the 35 will live with him forever. Awesome story.
This whole thing is so wholesome. Really shows how music can bring people together.
Joshua, if you ever read this, I would like to tell you one thing: enjoy your time with your grandfather. He sure seems like a really nice guy and hopefully this new guitar you got will stay with you 50+ years and will make you think of your grandpa. Cheers.
I sure will my grandads is the real deal and I know everyone thinks it's bad he sold his guitar for me but y'all don't know the other part of the story my grandad also sold it to get him a better guitar he told me it was worth to much to keep so I told him if he can get one that's more bluegrassy to go for it.
@@joshualovesbluegrass9422
Yeah, I was worried your granpa wouldn't have anything to play. What's he lookin at gettin?
Get some new stuff up on your channel!🤘😀
@@paulboden7850 Thank you so much He is looking at getting a D-28 herenbone
@@joshualovesbluegrass9422
Now that's exciting news!
I hope Jeremy will follow this. Anyway, I salute you and your grandpa for making fine bluegrass music and also your loyalty to Martin Guitars.
The boy will regret selling the old mans guitar after he's dead.
Agree 100%
Give the guitar back to the kid when he is a little bit older.
Wants to sell a Brazilian rosewood 1960s D-28 to buy a second rate new D-35. Oi vey! Kids!!
The kid is a virtuoso compared to me at the same age.
He is a virtuoso compared to me at ANY age.
It has that sound. All acoustic players know it. It's just called that sound.
People that kept their guitar for the entire life knew what life is.This guitar tells a story.
My grandfather left me a 1947 00-18. Wouldn’t sell it for anything
3 out of 4 grandkids playing is incredible. that grandfather must be so proud! what a charismatic and talented young man.
I wish my grandfather had a Martin.
Me too! My grandkids will have a grandpa with several.
I wish I had a grandfather
I’ve got a ‘77 and when I go(not soon I hope)somebody finds a great player
@@Foe1971 I had one years ago! Now I are one myself! Time does that to you!😎

Don't count your chickens before they hatch , life can change at any moment.
Absolutely sad to see a man departing with his first love but so happy to see how proud it makes his grandson. If only you could hold on to it for many many years and I bet his grandson would be calling you back and saying, “Do you still have that guitar that you bought off my grandpaw? “
wonderful.....everybody's happy..........God bless America, from UK
Typical southern rural manners , thank you very much i much appreciate it ! From a young teen no less ! Then mentions his pastor , figures , they wouldn't be connected now would they ? Politeness , friendly , generally nice folk , nah can't be nothing but a coincidence !
and they didn't count the money. You don't get that in the city
This is the way all business transactions should go down. “I stand before Jesus” and didn’t open the envelopes. Proper...
I was torn on if I should leave that in there.
Jeremy Sheppard
I was born into a Roman Catholic family and having 2 parents from Italy, religion was forced on me. As an adult I am more spiritual than religious and believe in being kind to everyone and living gently on the earth. Having said that, that portion of the video was one of the most moving life lessons captured in real time. A handshake is still solid and that just completely spoke to my core. Massive amounts of peace and luv.
Jeremy Sheppard never be afraid of that brother
Im not religious in the slightest and I thought that was cool. Its a great feeling buying and selling from honest people, and it was nice seeing two strangers trust eachother.
@@JeremySheppard I'm very glad you did!!!!!!! God will bless you for it & that's why satan is trying to attack it like he is!!!!!!! You've earned my sub!!!!!!!
I'm impressed with the kid. He knows his stuff and is a good player.
He bought that guitar from my great grandpa, "Paul Bowman" I think
Kinda sad, it's tough to find another man who can trust that you're telling the truth just by letting him know you're a God fearing man. A man who is true to his word is a valuable friend.
For anyone who thinks Joshua is great here, you HAVE to go over and see his own videos at "Joshua loves bluegrass". He not only sings too, but you find out that guitar isn't even his best instrument. When you hear him play mandolin you know what a real star he is.
I have that guitar. My favorite after 60 years of playing and having a large collection. Easily worth $5K all day long and should go to a deserving player. I suspect the kid isn’t old enough to appreciate and will sell regardless. Even my sons don’t really appreciate my D 28 mostly because they don’t play guitar.
So sad that this kid isn't holding onto his Grandpa guitar. Oh, well he's got his mind set on a D-35.
Why are you meeting a person who is at very much at risk of dying from COVID-19. This is really unsafe. I like guitars and all but I wouldn't call this an essential item. That dude is really old.
No.. covid is hoax.. it cant kill you even if you are old as long as you are healthy and no serious illness.
The old man wanted to meet up??? Settle down. Corvids no.more dangerous than the flu
I love everything about this whole experience. Hearing them talk about Jesus watching them and the stories. This is special!
Came back to see this one after seeing the ending. Fantastic.
That is a beautiful guitar. I have an acoustic which I don't play much, I have never really heard much bluegrass, may have to give it a go
Lucky find. I have a 1976 D-28 that I bought brand new. My youngest son is playing it now. My brother still owns the D-35 that he bought a week after I bought my D-28.
I still feel the whole Brazilian rosewood thing is overblown. I had a '66 D-28 and it was a fine guitar. Sounded great. I now own a '69 D-28 with the Indian rosewood and it sounds just as nice if not better! If you are comfortable paying double for a Brazilian Martin knock yourself out!
A lot of it has to do with which guitar has been played more.
Joshua doesn't want to let go that part of his grandpa. You can see it in his eyes. He looks real happy playing his new one though... LOL!
cjcar63 I also have a Martin D-28 from my grandpa. I think it’s a 1980 and it means the world to me
Well ; SOLD! 😢 MAN YOUR PLAYING IS AWESOME ! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SOUND ! WOW ❤ 54 yrs old ; i wish i had aged as well as that guitar 🎸......wow THAT BABY IS SWEET! GOT BETTER WITH AGE!!
I lived in Strasburg 20 years ago and know the region. I taught and coached at Rappahannock. Congratulations on your purchase. I subscribed. I'm probably gonna do the same for Josh because I practice bluegrass Sunday nights listening to WYEP from Pittsburgh. I'm a hillbilly Yankee from Chestnut Ridge. Maybe Josh can bring me up to speed. Speed being the optimum word.
Awesome Video! I live in the same town you do, we are lucky to have so many good people in our valley. Thanks for sharing!
I am amazed at your mental rationalization and gymnastics that you used to justify you taking advantage of their ignorance of the value of this guitar! Always remember..."Karma is a bitch"!
I'm sorry you feel that way. Everyone was very happy with the deal.
yes especially you it appears. The "good old boys" were clueless of the market value of the guitar.@@JeremySheppard
A friend of mine just told me about this video. I enjoyed watching it. I know the grandpa, Raymond. Haven't meet his grandson I don't think. Raymond is a fine musician and a good Christian man on top of it. Those grand kids are blessed to have a grandpa like him to teach them many things in life. Joshua is a great picker.
I would encourage you to keep in touch with the family so that if you ever wanted to sell the guitar, you could give him first shot at it. I don't play bluegrass either. I'm pretty much a finger style player. I love my D-28, even though I know I'm supposed to play a different model.
I feel sad watching this video.
I did the same thing with my first ever guitar, for financial reasons (and it wasn’t a martin), 10 years apart, and I was so happy that I could find it again and buy it back.
I have a feeling that this young man will regret real bad the selling of this instrument.
There is so much to love about this video...Grandad realised that Joshua would get more out of a guitar he really loved & wanted to share its value with his other grandkids. You were an absolute gent with the deal once you’d established they DID want to sell it (thank whatever you believe in that the first guy didn’t show up!). Great to see that Joshua got his prized Martin shortly after - what a player he is! There should be more dealers like you dude.
I discovered you when you only had about 700 subs. I see you are moving on up! I love your content and I hope you get to 1,000,000 soon!
My grandpa refused to speak to me as a child because my parents eloped. His first words to me were when i was 19: "Can you pass the butter?" I've had a great life, but I wish I had a grandpa in my life. That is an incredible blessing!
Wow, I’m sorry to hear that.
The year i was born! ❤ Give it to a Grandaughter? I hope and 🙏🏼 pray ; he kept it? Not finished watching lol ...😢 WISH I STILL HAD ALL MY DADS GUITARS ECT. ? PEACE ✝️ LOVE ❤AND HUMAN 🌈 🌎 KINDNESS. KIM-N-CAROLINA
Great story and great video. Such good people. Amazing sounding guitar too.
Great story. However I've decided to get each Grandchild a great sounding guitar. Two out of 6 play. Rest are a bit too young. Thanks
In Australia a D-28 was that price, new, NOT Brazilian Rosewood in 2005. I nearly bought it but boufgt a Fender Telecaster instead. You guys in the States are spoilt. In fact , it's cheaper for me to have a holiday there and get a Gretsch 6120, and enjoy the music down south.
If you're looking for a Brazilian Rosewood Acoustic , 1967 was the Last year they were made on Production Models , after that a Moritorium was installed for the Exports of Brazilian Rosewood from Brazil , So Their Very Rare , $4,000 is a Fair Price, I heard their Going for that Price if you can Catch a NAMM Show Seller , HINT: if you buy a Used Instrument or Used Amp , Don't buy it from a Professional Musician , They can be Worn Out , Used-up , There Tools , to do a Job , Playing Gigs Every Weekend , Practice , Road Worn-out , Rarely do you find Professionals Instruments in Good Shape Unless they Have and Use Various Guitars and Unless Your Willing to Pay for Repairs and Worn-out Parts , This was the Perfect Buy , 1 Owner , He Played it for Pleasure , at Home , Not a Job and He Obviously took Very Good Care of it after 53 yrs , Good buy ,
There's a resonance with the b string. That's fairly common and usually an indication of a nut/bridge issue or reflections off something metal with the bouts. Some times it just happens to be a mic/pick up issue where mic/pick up just happens to be a bit extra sensitive where the resonance is and is making the resonance more pronounced. In a live environment that's probably something I'd EQ out; A) other wise half the band would be giving me the it's feeding stink eye B) it's drives me nuts because it's continually tripping the part of my brain that want's to find and eliminate feedback.
Really glad I found this channel. Great fascinating video. The kid is awesome and his grandpa is a very kind guy
Not too long ago I sold my near-mint '61 D-28. Went for less than a new Brazilian guitar. They just aren't worth much. Never have been.
Subscribed as soon as I watched this video. Pulls on the heart strings...So much love in a mans heart when he is willing to give up a treasure for his grandkids.
The kid plays better than me. 👍🏻I bet grandpa wishes he could pass it on. It’s hard to be old & afford to live these days. A pension can’t survive the dollar’s depreciation 😒That’s a crime to be retired after a long career and be struggling in your old age
What a great kid , obviously raised well. Great story .
I just saw this video tonight, I was curious about Josh, I see he was out a couple of years ago. What happened to him? As good as he was I expected to still see him.
That guitar does not play well. They vare both struggling with it. I've been playing 44 years. I know these things.
I felt the same way. Playability is always at the top of my list.
I didn’t find a vintage Martin, but I found a 2015 Gpcpa4, which has been discontinued. I’m 72 any I’ve been playing on inexpensive guitars for a long long time. Now I have a real quality Martin. Now I better live to 100 and enjoy my fine instrument.
Ditch those sp strings their tension is too high! Use violin cleaner to go over then the polish little sections at a time. Is that the original pick guard. It needs a good cleaning, I’m not a D-35 fan at all, there was one only with light gauge strings but it was a Brazilian one. I played it for an hour and sang with it…I’m sure you’ll give it some loving restoration…
It's easier for kids to learn to play because their minds are still developing and they pick up on it easier. Adults have a harder time learning because they're past that learning stage. Not that they can't learn. Heck I did. But it was a lot harder. I wish I would've gotten into playing when I was still a kid.
I got my 1966 d 28 when I was 14 in 1974, still play it at least once a week, my son can’t wait to get it from me and I can’t wait to pass it on 😎
Jeremy, I enjoy watching your videos for the guitars but also for the life lessons and warm presentation. You treated them very well. Amazing story all around everyone involved. 👍🏾
That is one of the most attractive acoustic guitars I've ever seen! Great sounding too! No surprise there!
Beautiful guitar but I have to say I'm not too fond of the sound it produces. Seems jangly and tinny, to my ears anyway.
That kid can play for sure! too bad he couldn't keep his granddad's guitar.
I've got the feeling this great story will continue someday …
At 3:45 in when Grandpa is smiling at his boy. I am hoping that they don't end up selling this fine guitar. I have goose bumps the second the boy started playing. The new HD 35's do not compare to this guitar at all. Now saying that at this point I dont know what I'm going to learn about this guitar by the end of the episode. Let's get back into it...
Great video / production! I can’t help but cringe at the decision because obviously this talented kid is eventually going to regret letting go of such a wonderful guitar / family heirloom in pursuit of a relatively short-sighted buy. But he’s also just a kid and he’s gotta make his own mistakes I suppose. What I desperately wish he had done was simply commit to paying his grandpa the amount that this sale stood to net for his siblings. “Buy them out” in order to keep the instrument in the family for another generation. Let’s just hope he’s able to track it down again when he’s old enough to realize how special it was.
I know man. I tried to get them to keep it but they'd decided.
I tried to get them to keep it! But they'd made up their minds. in such a strange way, they had to sell the guitar in order for Joshua to have his own right of passage.
Not to worry. I’ve got his back.
I was blessed today by this. Encouraging to see a young Christian man play like that, with a good grandpa to look up to.
I have already subscribed to Joshua's Channel. So, I won't have enough time to watch yours! Well, I'll squeeze you in!
Thanks Jeremy. As always, the human story is best shared to all.

well I came back to this video as you said on the third one. Im not done yet but wanted to thank you for not editing out Jesus. man that made my day.
Great Video Jeremy. So the lesson from this is to buy enough Martins to cover all the grandchildren. LOL
Ya all aint countin da money. Ya all trustworthy folks down there. Cool
Hope the kid can buy it back some day. Joshua hopefully makes it big and then gives you an offer you can’t refuse 😉
You should see how this story ends. It's even better than that. Check out the other videos in the playlist. I sold it then we go and play with Raymond (grandpa)
@@JeremySheppard how do I find video you are speaking of?
I cannot play one note (nor sing a note, hum a note, nada) but always loved hearing my husband play. I do not even know ___?____ age or kind, wood etc Martin he owns, given to him by his mother. He has an Epson he bought when he was in college
(Hubby is almost 71 and he has taken excellent care of both)
I want to do ALL the justice (my best) to his Martin & Epson possible. I want someone that will love them the way my husband did. Both our children have passed and our grands are not interested. I am searching for a way to honor husband, his guitars ... it would be nice to somehow help a rising & hardworking, upcoming star.
How do I begin to find out about each?
You tried like hell to get Grandpa not to sell it---what a bunch of bullshit.
Do I need to count it? Trust, not too much anymore
that’s great 1967 it was 400$ … and it sounds amazing!!!… wow great find.
