Thanks for the honest info! My wife and I had plans for moving to Hilo area, kind of a romanticized idea, and your video helped ground us in reality so that we can properly plan ahead.

Much of what I heard was completely blown out of proportion. I just got a septic installed on the hilo side for 8k. my appliances have been going for over 8 years. As for a renovations. Who the hell pulls a permit to change a hot water heater? I have never sold a place on the island where anyone cares as long as it is functional and working at sale. There is no way to tell anyway if it is the same heater that was installed when the place was new or not. On to electric. everyone including the electric company is switching to solar panels and Tesla batteries. Ten years from now almost nobody will be using Helco. As for water, that is a west island issue as on the east everyone is on catchment and loves not having the bill. Some people in the trade can be sketch, true enough! We still have many of good licensed people on the island and many handymen that are also a great resource.

We are renovating our condo right now. (2022) It took us 6 months to get new windows put in. We are getting a new kitchen and flooring. I figure about a year before we are all done. We do have a contractor but it’s a supply problem due to Covid. Plus we are on Hawaii time. A good way for us to learn patience.

Aloha @SueHofkamp! You ran into one of my friends, Heidi, last week! Thanks for always watching the fun over here. Yes, it takes a long time to get anything done around here due to the labor shortage lately. Glad you are finding your way!

Aloha all, Feb 2023: This video was taken way back in 2020 and posted about a year ago. PRICES have INCREASED substantially since this video was produced. As we all know, the world has changed in the last few years, contact a CONTRACTOR for current pricing and timelines. Contractors have gotten extremely busy, you have supply chain issues and inflation, they can better prepare you for what to expect.
    Thank you.

Hi I’m wondering what you mean at 4:05 police logs? They call it staring because you’re not supposed to influence one way or another?! Thank you

I had the same questions? It came off as very pretentious to me. I mean in SF where I live now we have to leave our windows down when parking because everyday someone will break your window and take anything! EVERYDAY! Like, just speak plainly we are all adults. I have looked up the crime on the island and from all reports it is less than half of what I deal with here.

I know. Lumber prices are going up again, too, right now. Lots of folks thinking they can just put up a home quickly and that is just not the case right now. So, we wanted to let people know.

This was not helpful and you guys barely explained why it was unreasonable to buy small plots of land for less in places like Mt.View.
