Kothanur Kitchen, Authentic Kongunadu Cuisine, Tamil Cuisine, Village Style Salem Food, Kothanur, Bengaluru, Bangalore, Kothu Parotta, Mutton Kola Urundai, Egg Boti Fry, Naatu Kozhi Fry, Nethili Kuzhambu, Naati Kozhi Kuruma, Chicken Biryani, Mutton Biryani, Non Vegetarian
This village style eatery in the North Bengaluru suburbs of Kothanur draws inspiration from Kongunadu cuisine and the streets of Salem in its hearty non vegetarian Tamil fare. Kothanur Kitchen favours cooking over wood fire and a strict no-refrigeration policy, ensuring that everything that is served is cooked with fresh ingredients for the day.
Food Lovers’ Editor visits the restaurant to savour some of the most popular dishes served here, from a Mutton Kola Urundai to Egg Boti Fry, a vivacious Netholi Curry and more. Enjoy!
    Kothu Parotta
Robust in its spicing, this parotta that has soaked up the egg masala and chicken sherva will transport you to the street stalls of Salem.
    Rs. 80 (usd 1.1)
    8/10
    Mutton Kola Urundai
Love the texture of these spiced mutton mince balls, it's got a bit of a crunch as you bite into it but is yielding inside. The meat hasn’t been ground to a paste, and the spicing is gentle, leaves behind a happy warmth on the palate.
    Rs. 200 (usd 2.8)
    9/10
    Egg Boti Fry
The boti is prepped and cooked rather well too. There is none of the raw ‘animal’ scent that one smells if offal meat isn't cleaned well.
    Rs. 150 (usd 2.1)
    8/10
    Naatu Kozhi Fry
At first bite, I felt the meat was a bit too tough, although I enjoyed the flavours of the fry - the tartness of the tomato, the mild sweetness of the onions and the savouriness of the Salem masala. However, as you chew on the chicken, it releases the flavours of the masala it has been cooked in.
    Rs. 200 (usd 2.8)
    8.5/10
    Nethli Kozhambu
This Sunday special fish curry at Kothanur Kitchen combines the humble nethili fish with the puckeringly sour raw mango in a curry pot that’s cooked slowly over a wood fire.
    Rs. 150 (usd 2.1)
    9/10
    Naati Kozhi Kuruma
The chicken is cooked with the skin, which lends a fulsome flavour to the kuruma. The kuruma in itself is rather delicately flavoured, allowing one to savour the flavour of the meat and the lingering warmth of the spices.
    Rs. 200 (usd 2.8)
    8.5/10
    Mutton Kuruma
The fat flavour in this kuruma is quite pronounced, I also found the meat a tad chewy. On a positive note, the gravy benefits from the richness of the fat on the meat.
    Rs. 180 (usd 2.5)
    7/10
    Chicken Biryani
The rice is quite flavourful once you get past its slight stickiness. On the palate you taste the freshness of the mint and coriander, the acidity of the tomatoes amidst the spices.
    Rs. 130 (usd 1.8)
    8/10
    Mutton Biryani
The mutton biryani is restrained in its spice notes and spotlights the flavour of the meat. The rice is cooked perfectly in this naati, country style biryani, with the fat lending its deep savoury unctuousness.
    Rs. 200 (usd 2.8)
    8.5/10
    Kalaki
In case you haven’t had enough of the meaty preparations here, the custardy goodness of the kalaki, an egg and chicken curry mix that's cooked to the point where the egg begins to coagulate, provides the perfect end to a Kongunadu meal.
    Rs. 30 (usd 0.4)
    7.5/10

      @@srinivasyallanki6121 Hi Srinivas,
Unfortunate that your experience wasn't the sort that it should be. When I visited the restaurant, I liked some dishes more than the others as I mentioned in my review and ratings. I speak for the food as it speaks to my palate during my meal, I pay for my meal and I speak without bias.
However, the unfortunate nature of product that I review, is that it is highly variable, unlike let's say a product, like a movie that doesn't change with every user interface. The delivery of a restaurant experience is subject to many factors based on the ground realities prevalent at the restaurant at a given point. Perhaps the regular chef isn't there, perhaps there was an issue with late arrival of an ingredient, or perhaps the cook was a in a terrible mood with no desire to do his best, or perhaps it is near closing time and all that's left are the dregs (food-wise)! At times, it could be that the restaurant suddenly sees a huge upsurge in customers on a given day and they aren't able to handle. I know of a restaurant that I reviewed recently where weekend crowds post our video release jumped five fold, thereby putting an enormous strain on the establishment's ability to deliver the experience that I had reviewed. Unfortunately, these factors and more impact a meal, unfortunately at a customer's expense. I am not making excuses on behalf of the restaurants, but having been in the space both within and as an observer of the business for 25+ years, I have some insights into what transpires behind closed doors. A great restaurant is one that is able to deliver a consistent experience over a period of time; restaurants that do not, eventually perish.
Appreciate your understanding, let me assure you and your son that I speak for the food as it speaks to me. Our reviews are honest and genuine based on the experience that we had. Unfortunately, there are times a restaurant slips and there's not much we can do.

Kongunadu cuisine is very robust in flavour and taste.
It is basically a cuisine farmers follow day in and day out.
You would find it very different from say Madurai side cuisine.
    I really enjoyed your video.
The cocept of going back to village IMHO started in gujarat and Saurashtra way back 50 years back.l
    And it became very popular.

One thing that struck me about the non veg preparations, apart from the secret spice mix, is the profusion of curry leaves that adorn each dish. I love curry leaves and the aroma they impart to any dish is incalculable. When showing the making of kothu paratha, I noticed the rich gathering of those beautifully green fresh curry leaves. That by itself is enough to make you drool.

We visited this place today only cause we seen this video and wanted to actually experience if this is what @foodloversTV would genuinely recommend. The expression and the walkthrough is always so so enticing so we started off with this particular place. To our suprise this restaurant was a big disappointment not only with the restaurant folks who didn't check to see if they have fulfilled an order that we placed nor did the taste authentically resonate with the southern cooking the restaurant boasts off. My only request is if foodlovers TV could be a little more genuine in giving feedback on the dishes.

How can a restaurant keep food fresh, hygienic and safe to eat without temperature control? For me to sell my Indian food I have to abide by strict food & hygiene regulations. These allow a clear checklist so if anything goes wrong I can prove my storage, fridge temp, freezer temp, sealed boxes for allergens, temp control and food control from the collection of ingredients to the serving of a customer. All meat is kept at 5c or below, how can this restaurant serve chicken without a fridge? I'd really like to know, maybe this restaurant owner knows something I don't? Anyway, another fantastic episode, as usual, thank you.

@Chaat Man They procure meat that are slaughtered just hours before cooking, Same for vegetables procured on daily basis from the market and most spices does not need any refrigerator for storing. Also most of the Indian food are fully cooked there is no raw or half cooked food.

Watch Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares series and you will see how 'hygienic' a lot of those refrigerators and storage areas are. These guys source everything fresh, like people have been doing for millenia, and don't serve you yesterday's leftovers. You seem ill-informed and narrow minded.

And Try Thalapakatti too... Madras has many restaurants, most of them become global brand like Thalapakatti, HSB, A2B, Anjappar, Junior Kuppanna, Ponnuswamy, Star Biriyani, Sri krishna Sweets, Murugan idli, Chennai (Madras) has become global food icon not because of medical tourism. It has more diversity of food in and around. Now all these outlets trying their luck in Bangalore and hyderabad..Explore Chennai it takes decade to complete but I'm sure you get more subscribers. வந்தாரை வாழ வைக்கும் சென்னை "Chennai will nourish those seek asylum to it"

All that food served is my mom’s special- She is an awesome cook except for kothi paratha. Feeling nostalgic after watching this video. Actually I was impressed with the rustic ambiance and the old fashioned kitchen. Thank you for another interesting video.
BTW, the chef was not wearing gloves - I saw the waiters wearing it😀.

    • @ss.2727
      @ss.2727 4 года назад

Does your mother wear gloves? As far they keep their hands clean, that's more than enough. Because some things are better when mixed with bare hands. Even Gordon Ramsay abides by this while making Indian dishes.

    • @sheebasomashekar5567
      @sheebasomashekar5567 4 года назад

Even I don’t wear gloves forget my mom but in a restaurant, it’s expected - the question arises because the waiters were wearing not the chef

Why should we worry about Gordon Ramsey? I am a demo specialist- I’ve done a food handler’s course and I wear glove & hat at work. This dress code has to be followed to keep the health in mind from the customers point of view.

Hi kripal, again a awesome vedio and great research in finding such gem of places.. However wanted to correct u on something, I couldn't stand u mispronouncing the kothu porotta, its ko-thu and not ku-thu.. Also kala-ki and not kalla-ki, kalakki is basically half boiled omelette...
