When I started Medic school and Fire school, I had no idea of how the real EMS world actually worked. Bravo on this channel and this Proactive style educational upgrade for our younger brothers and sisters.
As a member of a fire department and a 911 dispatcher this is total amazing what this program is teaching. Wishing more schools would start programs like this.
The high school fire labs are becoming more and more popular, I am a part of Tolles Career and Technical school in Plain City Ohio we certified with FF level l/ll and EMT basic immediately after high school. We also have a few local fire departments that offer internship positions that will help provide jobs to the students that take time to ride along and help throughout their senior year.
I’m so proud of this school for having a public safety school for highschoolers. Hero’s next door is the best channel on RUclips hands down. I’m so proud of this channel. Because of HND I think I found a path that I want to take being a fire instructor.
I was in the 1st graduating class for this program back in 1994. The program was offered in 1992 and I was fortunate enough to be able to get in. I did half a day at the tech school and the other half doing regular academic classes. I went to AW Beattie Technical school in Pittsburgh PA. After school everyday I would go to the Allegheny County Fire Academy and continue my training. I was able to start my career as a volunteer firefighter then by the time I was 20yrs old I became a full-time Paid firefighter. These programs are great!
I remember going through EMT-B back in 93 and while it wasn't over the top exciting being in class when we got to run practical and vehicle extrications it was all worth the weeks and weeks of classroom. In my class there were only 25 students for our entire county and most of us were under 20, now you just don't see the younger generation to interested and it's a shame because it IS a rewarding career and or volunteer program helping others.
I graduated from this school in 2017. I never thought I could have this much fun in high school. If you are a student in Delco you should definitely take this course. You won’t regret it.
We need more of those training programs here in PA. I am in the fire department here in York County in PA and we are trying to get a program like that at our trade school
I am also doing this program at Suncoast Technical College in Florida. I actually started as a senior and it’s the best program ever we are doing EMT right now and Fire II in the summer.
Awesome program. It looks like they really have a good bunch of kids who want to be involved. Also nice job helping the students along in the interviews since they were probably not used to being put on the spot like that.
Back in the good old 1970's I approached a reading teacher (Peter Lebetkin, Farmington, CT. HS) who was a Simsbury volunteer, and asked if we could have a class on firefighting. I set it up with the school administrators and myself and another kid (John Trapenier) actually got a credit for firefighting. We were the only kids walking around with portable scanners on our waists. Others laughed at us. Oh well. RIP Mr. Lebetkin, and thank you very much. I was going to end it there, but I want to say this: Firefighters are the most selfless people I have ever met (well, most anyway, haha). In the words of author Dennis Smith, there's an innocence that comes with it. By the way, we just lost Dennis Smith (Jan. 21, 2022); his first book, "Report From Engine Co. 82" is a must read. I ended up meeting him by chance back in 1986 at the offices of Firehouse magazine (which he started), at Irving Place on 16th Street, NYC. What an honor! RIP Dennis.
In Butler County PA They've had a program like this since the 90's . Some of the best times of my teenage years .The program has created and continues to create some of the best firefighters,EMTs,and cops in Butler and surrounding area.
I have seen paramedic coach ads and stuff but I was unsure if it was a real program or what but its good to see that you support it and that it truly is something I should look into.
My city ought to get one. You did reach the younger generation. I really ought to share your videos with my local departments. These would also help my local department to use as training if they want to since they don’t have one less than an hour away I believe including the townships. The school district(s) could not afford it either but if the whole emergency services supported it we could totally make this helpful for the community.
@@HeroesNextDoor Midland MI. I know it’s not gonna happen given we have 7 stations within the County (3 in city rest townships) all but city volunteer ran, though I am sure Bay and Saginaw counties would take part. As for me sharing these with my local department I was kind of joking but not really given my department really needs to advance up in some aspects for Police, Fire, and EMS maybe even dispatching. I was gonna show one video to the fire marshal but I kind of think he dislikes me for some reason. Probably because I ask to many good questions.
This is by far one of the best ideas for a trade that I've seen in a while. Too many schools have forgotten that not everyone will want to go to college and honestly not everyone is meant to. Being a cop, paramedic, or fireman is a great trade and you can make a good, honest living doing it.
I wish our schools around Northeast AR. and Southeast Missouri had this. I got into the Fire Service in the spring of 2013 right after high school, but this would do great in the rural parts of the U.S.
What a great concept. I was in a high school fire program in Germantown, Tennessee. It changed my life and put me on a 41 year career in the fire service.
I had asked for delco about a month ago and you said contact you with houses that were interested. I’ve been out of delco fire houses for about 10 years now….. I’m so glad you got to experience and make a video about delco votech es classes!! Awesome video, keep it up and love to see some Delco love haha
Sweet Course.. I wish that there was something similar up here in BC. I'm to old for it, but i know a lot of kids that would love to do this. Even if they don't end up going into the Emergency services right away for what ever reasons, alot of the EMS and Fire training can help them down the road. I spent 14 years as a Volunteer in our local Highway Rescue, and I now, if I'm first on scene, i know more of what is needed to tell 911 about the scene to get them rolling faster.
We have a program like this here in Eastern West Virginia. It is Called James Rumsey Technical Institute in Martinsburg, WV.a, I went to this school for 2 years, 1 year for fire science, and 1 year for EMT. it is a really great resource for High school students. We had 2 fire engines (one as an Engine, and the other as a "squad"). and 1 ambulance with BLS equipment on it, we had a cascade system (1 cylinder). Forcible entry door, SCBA'S, gear, mock up engine bay (as close as possible in a classroom).
Love it wish I had it available when I was going through school. Only thing I noticed that I learned differently was when taking a 911 call to get the the address first so even if the call gets disconnected you would be able to have units rolling.
I would've loved this! Just finished high school in December (I'm in New Zealand) and the only was to really connect with my local fire/ambo/police station is through contacting them or through someone who works there etc. I got lucky when they set up a health day at the hospital where I met the ambulance station manager and got to meet up for a info night with her, then a ride along about a month later. BUT I told her later that I changed my mind and paramedicine wasn't a thing for me and chickened out and now I'm too embarrassed to go back lol. SO a programme like this would've been great to slowly introduce myself and others to EMS/emergency services rather than jumping right in which was obviously a difficult thing for me to do haha.
I would absolutely love to see a program like this start in the state of Georgia especially in metro Atlanta where there is a great need for firefighters, police officers and paramedics. If you could get a program started to where students had the option to explore these particular fields and gain the necessary skills to where if they decide to pursue it as a career choice., they are already ahead of the game coming into the training academy environment not to mention what this would do for retention having active duty personnel rotate through such an academy as part of their career, keeping skills sharp and also passing on that knowledge down the line to a future generation
If you ever get up to Kalamazoo, Michigan Check out the EMS program At the local Community college They have the back of an Ambulance In the building It's Kalamazoo Valley Community College
That is the first time I've seen a form of education that is practical to what the students interests are in. The closest to this type is in the UK, is Btec diploma in public service's, but you don't get anywhere close to learning the skills needed or even required.
This is so awesome. I do something very similar with CTE here in NY run through BOCES. Im in the aviation program. Mornings i go to my technical hs for flight training then my regular hs for core classes in the afternoon.
I go to a PA Protective Services program and it is awesome. We have an Engine and a Latter. We are getting and ambulance and a Quint. We have a smoke house and we have a rope tower. It has taught me so much. I went to it for law enforcement and fell in love with rescue fire and EMS. We do mods 1,2,3 and Interior Firefighting (mod 4) High Angle rope Rescue 1 and 2, EMR, EMT, BVR Awareness, Operations, and Technician. Hazmat Awareness and Operations, ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800. BLS Provider CPR and other stuff. We have a Rope Rescue trailer and a hydraulic cart. We get some of the news battery operated tools and we are expanding. Protective Services has help me tremendously and has given me opertunitties and passion. We have the best instructors and it's really awesome. It's produced so many great 1st responders cheifs and former students are now running multi county wide EMS agencies and run 30 some ambulances. I recommend these courses to anyone they will really get you there.
You guys should add the s130&s190 classes. Those are pretty easy to do in high school and great ones to get kids out into the fire world where we really need them badly
This is a great resource for the community. I wish they had it when I was in high school. However, back then the number of paid fire and EMS positions were only in the cities.
Apollo Career Center in lima ohio just started a Firefighting / Ems Technologies course. I was in the first jr class to go all the way through. That program was an absolute rollercoaster and i wouldn't have wanted it any other way honestly. I graduated with my Lvl II firefighter and had finished the EMT class just needed to test. Sadly I tested once and failed and that scared me away from testing again all the way until this past two weeks. I Finally passed and all my instructors sent me congrats texts. Honestly my favorite parts where days we were in school on weekends but never doing boring class work. Always doing live burns on the weekends. We even got to do the propane tree at night, being able to see exactly how large that flame was, was spectacular. I miss going to that class every day honestly. It was so much fun and i loved watching my class mates mess around. Big group of clowns.
Waukesha County Technical College in Wisconsin is a regional training center for fire/ems. Great programs. Would be a great place to have in the channel
Awesome idea for Recruitment retention, Montco needs to reach out to there votech as well. These schools are such a great opportunity for those being limited to or not able to goto college. Its a huge win for all. However the CERT phase of expecting so much for such little is a huge divide..
This is a great thing. The number one thing for 911 operators is listen to your caller. It happens way too often that the dispatcher doesn't understand the seriousness of the call. I've been through it. A lot of times they don't even hear what the caller is saying.
If your ever in central Ohio, you should head over to C-TEC in Newark. Its a high school with many different trades. But their fire class is pretty amazing, the students will earn their EMT and Fire l and ll. The lab has an engine, ladder, and ambulance. They also have a maze and model room. Outside they have a burn building and ventilation prop. Overall it’s a really really great school for future firefighters
Great school and cool is a litlle bit limits definition but we get it,and you are a great teacher which stands above being a professional. Greetings from Bodrum Neighborhood Disaster Volunteers, Emergency Response Team, Search and Rescue, Turkiye.
It’s so cool. I did not know that there’s more than one votec school in the state of Pennsylvania I know about the Greene County votec that also has a first responders class
This is super cool. I think having this is gives the younger generation more of a good start in the first responders field. I also love your videos, I was a volunteer for 47 Chester township in Delaware county and I have arthritis and can't run calls anymore but I love your videos.
I love this and what you guys do btw if you want to see a cad we use one in gta rp called sonoran. I wont link it as I am not here for that but you can google it if interested. Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing more firehouses
This is pretty cool I wish this was a thing in our state I'm 24 and going to collage just for my emt and there is no program like this. I'm jealous lol
@@HeroesNextDoor Chester PA is in Delaware County. They’re Stations 81 and 82 as a paid department. In the volunteer days, they were Stations 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31. It’s a bit confusing as to why Chester is in Delaware County and not Chester County, and the reason is that Delaware County split from Chester County after the City of Chester was formed. The county seat for Chester County was moved from Chester to West Chester a year before the split.
This should be played in every high school coast to coast. Let the students bring the storm to the Education Boards, to push for these type of learning options.
This appears to be an amazing program. One of the worst lies that the government pushed on kids a few decades ago was that you MUST go to college in order to make it. That push has not only created massive student debt for useless degrees but has also created a massive void in people willing and able to do blue collar work. Tech/trade programs are booming and students are finding that they are able to not only make more money than many of their college friends but they are able to get into the work force YEARS earlier. This program looks like it enables these young people to be able to graduate at 18 and have a valid and in demand skill set which is awesome. I recommend young kids these days that unless you are going into a medical or STEM field that they should save their money and time and get into a trade. As a software engineer with a degree in electrical engineering, I have made some good money and had a great career but my love and passion is my volunteer firefighter/EMT work.
Thank you for watching. Make sure to like share subscribe so that we can keep building this channel. These are the kind of stations and ideas were trying to get out to the public.
The skill in Mike's question asking here is not emphasized enough. It is professional and incredibly skillful. This goes for all of his other videos as well. Mike internally processes what bits of information that the the lay person in the viewing audience may not understand. Then he asks questions to get this information from the people he is interviewing. These are questions that the lay person greatly benefits hearing the answers to, especially coming from the staff members speaking with him. This seems straightforward and simple but many people are missing the genius behind what he is actually doing here. Many of us know that, with Mike's many years of experience in the field, he personally knows these answers well before he asks the questions. He could, and most interviewers do, simply rattle off the information that that he thinks the audience would like to know; as opposed to asking questions with his personal knowledge set aside. Doing this allows the interviewee to provide the information that Mike is looking for, further paints the interviewee as the expert, and helps the audience relate because him asking the audience's question makes the audience feel heard. It also helps them feel better about not knowing things about these fields and fosters curiosity. Some may see it as him "playing dumb" but it is, in fact phenomenal interview skills. Well done Mike.
Thank you very much. This is a learned skill. I have used this technique to teach new paramedics and emts while doing field precepting too. The biggest challenge is not sounding like I am “acting dumb”.

My children one a now certified firefighter the other a Junior firefighter would have loved this while in High School
Thanks for watching. Hope these videos are helpful.
Waukesha County Technical College in Wisconsin is a regional training center for fire/ems. Great programs. Would be a great place to have in the channel
Send an invite maybe we can you on the schedule
this is absolutly awesome i wish i would have had this when i was in high school would have done for sure
We have a fire science program at our community college. It should be more hands on type stuff like this as compared to all class room
Awesome idea for Recruitment retention, Montco needs to reach out to there votech as well. These schools are such a great opportunity for those being limited to or not able to goto college. Its a huge win for all. However the CERT phase of expecting so much for such little is a huge divide..
This is incredible! How much to do this in high school. So much knowledge and credits before you graduate. Great job to this school district!
It cost nothing more for a student
This is a great thing. The number one thing for 911 operators is listen to your caller. It happens way too often that the dispatcher doesn't understand the seriousness of the call. I've been through it. A lot of times they don't even hear what the caller is saying.
Wish there was more of these all over the world
I think this should be a series and you should go to a bunch of the tech schools
We can think about that for sure
Lancaster County has an emergency services academy as well.
Have them send an invite
If your ever in central Ohio, you should head over to C-TEC in Newark. Its a high school with many different trades. But their fire class is pretty amazing, the students will earn their EMT and Fire l and ll. The lab has an engine, ladder, and ambulance. They also have a maze and model room. Outside they have a burn building and ventilation prop. Overall it’s a really really great school for future firefighters
Wenatchee Valley Technical Skills Center has a program like this.
was in the class and enjoyed it alot! miss it alot everyday!
Great school and cool is a litlle bit limits definition but we get it,and you are a great teacher which stands above being a professional. Greetings from Bodrum Neighborhood Disaster Volunteers, Emergency Response Team, Search and Rescue, Turkiye.
Thanks for watching we appreciate you!
Thank you for watching we appreciate and will try to continue to bring quality and diversity to our service
Very cool to see! Thanks for sharing
go to mcdowell highschool in NC they have the exact same thing and more
Wish I went to that high school I use to know somebody that did this in new York
I love this and what you guys do btw if you want to see a cad we use one in gta rp called sonoran. I wont link it as I am not here for that but you can google it if interested. Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing more firehouses
The Fairdale Kentucky fire program is pretty good too
That's great
Being 18. And starting a career
That pays decently and benefits
It is nice to be able to work right out of school. Even college education does not always produce results
Could y’all cover Darien EMS? Somewhat similar but the HS actually runs the county’s EMS and students respond from the school at times.
They have a documentary out called High School 9-1-1
I'd watch that
Send us an invite to watchheroesnextdoor@gmail.com
Great video, these students r very knowledge.
There is one similar in Hoover, AL you should come check out. It’s called Riverchase Career Connection Center. Nice video!
This is pretty cool I wish this was a thing in our state I'm 24 and going to collage just for my emt and there is no program like this. I'm jealous lol
We have training school here in Mesa az for high school students called est Valley international of technology wair teach firefighter to cooking
Wish my state had this when I was a volunteer explorer at oak grove fire rescue NLR Arkansas former #242&276/280; 276/280 were explorer numbers
I think 28 used to be one of the companies in Chester City before they went to a fully paid department.
This is in Delaware county though
@@HeroesNextDoor Chester PA is in Delaware County. They’re Stations 81 and 82 as a paid department. In the volunteer days, they were Stations 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31. It’s a bit confusing as to why Chester is in Delaware County and not Chester County, and the reason is that Delaware County split from Chester County after the City of Chester was formed. The county seat for Chester County was moved from Chester to West Chester a year before the split.
Wish we had this in Australia
Awesome opportunity for high school students!
I wish my highschool offered this program. Ive never seen or heard of a program like this before
This should be played in every high school coast to coast. Let the students bring the storm to the Education Boards, to push for these type of learning options.
100# agree
That’s honestly really cool, wish I could have done or even had this type of class when I was going thru high school
That is an amazing facility. Wish I had that was going to high school
I’m actually in the middle of applying at a fire station. I’m in Pennsylvania and I’m 17 so I’ll have to look into this school
I wish I had this growing up, too cool.
We have two engines at our votech, both were at the pentagon on 9/11, but one we were fixing up.
I am in a program like that in South Carolina and I am in the Fire Rescue Program
