  • On this episode of Station Cribs we travel up to Indianapolis, Indiana to Wayne Township Fire Department! Station 82 is a beautiful station that is about 10 minutes from center city Indianapolis. They are a paid fire station and run a ton of calls! They have one of the nicest living quarters we have ever seen and they even have a movie theater! In their coverage area they handle a lot of industrial areas, shopping malls, and large living complexes. We want to thank them for having us out! If you are interested in starting a career with Wayne Township please check them out at waynefire.org/

What a system of teamwork here…the guys put money into a house fund to afford ‘extras’, but the town supports them and makes surethey have what they ‘need’. Likewise, the town hears their needs and supplies what they can, because the crews put in for the ‘extras’.

I was fortunate enough to ride along at the old station 82 back in 2001 when it was still 882. I was assigned to the engine by Lt. Milo. Also had Chief Cranfill as the BC that weekend. Great group of men and women! Made me feel right at home. Even let me participate in ice water rescue training at the tower, which I never had any experience in before. This station is a HUGE improvement over that old house.

What a great facility, great layout and aesthetics. Confirms for me how far ahead of their time our fire stations are. Our oldest was built in 1975 and features individual sleeping quarters. Now our bedrooms go further and have 3 beds per room so everyone gets an assigned bed of their own (A,B&C platoons). Jack and Jill bath facilities where two bedrooms share one bath. This same design is carried out in our stations built in 1979 and 2000 respectively.

Thanks for acknowledging the architectural firm--Axis--responsible for the design of this station, Mike. This is one of the most impressive designs I've seen, and more so because it's a renovation of an existing structure that itself was a repurposed former Kroger grocery store. Just goes to prove that a new house with all the bells and whistles doesn't have to be built from scratch when department administrators work with a design team willing to think outside of the box...or, on second thought, with one agile enough to fit everything that department needs into an existing box. I appreciate what you do, and hope you keep bringing us quality content on your channel. Stay low and go, brother.

      Almost zero maintenance.
Can be opened easily manually and only one side if desired.
Chances of failing spring damaging rigs eliminated.
Initial cost higher but lasts much longer without repairing/replacing.
Opens and closes in much less time.
Our new station here on Cape Cod has them and were first in area to do so.
