Almost 20 years ago, while on my first trip to the Outer Banks, one of our party fell ill and ended up at Outer Banks Hospital. The Currituck EMS paramedic who responded was also a volunteer (lieutenant?) at Corolla. Upon hearing that we had several small children with us, he gave us his number and offered a tour of the station to keep the kids busy. He was a gracious host, gave us a lot of great hints for surf fishing , restaurants and such. Looking at this video, the main station really looks like it expanded! Best of luck to the Corolla FD.
They are a little unique. In the midwest U.S. most of us are union career FF/PM'S. Some places offer part time to give newbies a start as they get their certs but volunteer departments are rare
One thing about any of the departments in the OBX, their door is always open to a visitor. I have not seen one that isn't willing, and happy, to show you around.
This is now my favourite video of station cribs you've made. Fantastic love how the department has got some unique rigs, for the unique areas it covers. Good luck 🍀 and keep safe out there.
I vacation down there every year and I always drive past this fire house, glad to see some off-road action on Carova beach, always love taking my truck up there and doing some four wheeling and some surf fishing
I've been in that parking lot numerous times over the years turning around or pulling over driving between Corolla and Duck to grab something. I'll have to stop in and say hello next time I'm down that way.
This has become my favorite series, it's so awesome to see the massive differences between states and how they operate and what equipment they're using. Here in Bulgaria, every fire department is the same and they're using pretty much the same equipment. Keep it up!
I found your channel on my last family beach trip to the outer banks this last october and to think you went to the outer banks and thats where i started watching your videos crazy how that works!!
@@HeroesNextDoor Yeah, Like a floor plan showing and as you enter a room, an animation that zooms into that room on the floor plan. That would be pretty cool, need a good effects person to put that together for every house tour, lol

Ha thanks for this one!!! I was vacationing there a few years back and ended up in that t shirt shop. Love those shirts. My ocean rescue one I wear daily
Northerner here who vacations in OBX almost yearly. GREAT place!! Especially Corolla. Beautiful area. Their FD is on Rt 12 just as you come into town, and I usually stop at their gift shop to buy a tee shirt.
My husband and I are going to be there for a week starting Saturday April 27th and staying in Corolla. He used to be a volunteer firefighter in Florida years before we met and we have a few fire department patches we've bought to start a collection. I just happened to have the idea last night to check out some of the fire departments when we are in the Outer Banks to see what kind of items we could get, but my first idea was patches to add to our meager collection. I'm going to try to connect with our local fire department to get a few patches from them so that my husband and I can trade them when we are visiting in Outer Banks. It sounds like Chief Shortway needs a patch from a fire department in Maine.
Tourists say Cor-O-lla (like the car). Locals say Cor-A-lla. I drive by this station everyday. Never met Richard, but I appreciate his contribution to the community here.
Yeah sorry I did not say it correctly. I meant no offense. These guys were awesome to work with and can’t wait to go back. Dare County EMS has contacted us and we are working on and schedule 👍🏻
@@HeroesNextDoor No offense taken. When you have half a million people roll through your town every summer you hear a lot of things pronounced in all sorts of different way. We’ve got lots of unusual names on this sandbar.
Down here in NC we do not usually have ambulances in our stations we have squads that Carry EMS equipment but we do not transport and we are all Firefighter EMT’s so I wonder if that is Normal down near the beach.
Currituck Fire & EMS runs the ambulance, they just rent the space from Corolla Fire & Rescue (you can see the name). The 4x4 is owned by CFR, but I believe it's only to transport off of the beach to the standard ambulance. It's like this at several stations in Dare County to the south
I’m an EMT in Chapel Hill. We run volunteer BLS ambulances out of their own station, but medic trucks and county BLS run out of UNC hospitals and fire stations around the county.

@@geraldturner9764 truly I am always amazed how not only the fire companies in the OBX operate, seperate but as one, but even more so as seperate counties, as one. Even if SS or KH have to cross over the Wright Bros bridge to give you guys help, they do so as one, without a question asked, and then operate as one. I listened to the Cotton Gin fire, and the Duck chief, asking do you want our truck or engine, yeah that was a distance to cover, but she truly was thinking, what do you need? Then in the same incident, a chief (SS) taking incident command, not only out of district but out of county, yeah that was cool to listen to. I am 37 now, but have been going to the OBX since I was an infant, and I truly love how the FDs operate seperately but as one down there, and even in mainland Dare and Currituck.
