This is a pretty cool mod. However, one change I would make is that instead of getting a black screen when you die, I would make it so that it automatically spectates the other players/CPUs in the lobby.

I would love it even more if you just got a death screen from a random videogame. Dark souls, Minecraft, 2D-Mario, Etc.
That's exactly what I was thinking.
Hot tip: If you have a coin, don't use it. Hold it until you reach an item box. In normal and frantic items, that should guarantee a protective, or at least a useful, item.
This does not work in single item modes.
Came for that: 1:46 you use the coin just before getting to the single item.

I could really see this becoming an actual game mode if a health system was implemented. Different items would deal different amounts of damage (banana deals one, green/red shell does two, ramming someone with a mushroom steals a health point, etc.) and if you lose all your health points, you become a ghost. (If you didn’t know, balloon battles can be set to where after losing all your balloons, you respawn as a ghost. You couldn’t earn points as a ghost, but you were invisible and invincible and could still hit other players to make them lose points. This might have been exclusive to the Wii U version of MK8, but I don’t remember for sure.) Racing as a ghost in this mode would still allow to eliminate other players, but you would suffer a massive penalty to the points you get at the end of the race, something like 50%.

XGRA is a racing game on the PS2 entirely about that kind of health system idea.
In _Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed_ , there's a mode called Battle Race. Each player has 3 HP, and getting hit or falling off loses one. Lose all three and you're out (but can become a ghost and get revenge if there are human players left; run into someone to steal 1 HP and come back). Pretty fun, but it highly incentivizes staying in last place.
Oh yeah, just like in Mario Kart 64, there is a battle mode, but it's different it's just any hit, you will lose a balloon and when you run out you become a bomb
I was also thinking a punishment for getting hit/losing a life would just be, sending you back a lap, or to the start of the race.
1:53 Okay, I’m actually of the opinion that once you get your coin gage up to 10, you should no longer be able to receive coins in the item box. They go from, a slightly useful item that helps increase your overall speed, to the most useless item ever.
frontrunning is already broken in this game, plus you can not have 2 coins, so if you play strategically you can have protection at most times
@@djibytop6724 I only have the regular Mario Kart 8 because I never got a Switch. Wanted one but the joy con drift issue turned me off, so I got a PS4 instead (this being before the PS5 came out). In anycase, I have the Wii U version, so only 1 item at a time lol
They help you recover more quickly if you get hit by something

It would be cool if this could be further modded to bring the battle mode balloons over, so it's 3 lives per race.

Pro Mario Kart tip: If you're holding a coin when you grab an item box, the new item you get won't be a coin. So if you're in first and you get a coin, hold onto it until you get an item.

Also, there's a racing game called "XG2", where you can die, although it requires multiple hits.

You should do this in Battle Mode, but you die when you lose all of your balloons, with last one standing being the winner. Just like the good old days.

Falc! When your in first place, your first item will always be a coin and the second will be a defense item (ie. Banana Peel). So, if you're in first, keep holding that coin until you hit another question mark block for something to cover yourself from on-coming redshells :)

A more fun version of this
Hitting a banana causes your traction to zero out, making you slip and slide for 30 seconds
Getting hit by a shell makes you concussed, which at first does nothing but then later causes you to drive erratically
Being in range of a super horn makes you deaf, which disables all sound as well as warning indicators on the screen
Getting hit by a fire flower will cause your gas can to start on fire, you have 10 seconds to hit water or you explode
Getting hit by fire or shock while you're holding a bomb or in a bill causes it to instantly detonate, killing you instantly
Shock makes you paralyzed which locks up your controls, holding whatever inputs you had until the shock ends
Blooper causes you to drop whatever item you're holding, including items you pick up during its effect
Falling off a stage, getting hit by a star, any explosion (including blue shell) and getting hit by a bill are all death
Awesome mod! Still hoping for a mod where the coins effects are a lot more intense
I think it would work better as a battle royal if You had ballons or coins as hp(that way you can "heal" ). Because this just feels like Mario kart 8 but if You hit anything or fall You die. Figured it'll be more fun that way too.

You should add 3 lives in form of balloons to mske it less fast paced. If it was an actual game mode it would be fun if you could still influence what happens a bit when you're out

This was something that was in the Mario cart ds and the Wii U version of Mario cart right where if you lose all of your balloons in a balloon battle you just die
Awesome mod. The only thing I'd change is that instead of dying after 1 hit, every player should have 3 balloons as their lives, much like in battle mode. After the 3 balloons are killed, then the player is eliminated and is now spectating.

This kinda reminds me of some of the modes in Toy Story Racer for the PS1, another one that might be cool to mod into Mario Kart has the last place player gets eliminated from the race each lap until there's only one person left.
Mod idea: Mario Kart but every item(that's not normally triple), gets tripled.

I legit like this idea for the actual game, though I think it should be a mode you can choose, and characters get hit points instead of just being an instant lose. I guess that also means it should be possible (I said possible, not necessarily easy) to regain some hit points somehow, so there's some benefit to the detriment.
