Old Denver city bus transformed as young family's comfy home

  • Facing an unaffordable housing market, Scott and Emily bought a retired Denver city bus at auction and rebuilt it as a spacious home for themselves and children. With no building experience, they relied on help from family and online resources.
They designed DIY transforming furniture to make the “rooms” serve double duty. Using a kit, Emily and her father built a murphy bed so the largest room in the bus can transform from kids’ playroom to master bedroom.
Scott and Emily hacked IKEA beds to create “living room” couches that transform into a large guest bed. Since Scott works from home, the back of the bus serves as kids’ bedroom (with one lofted bed) as well as home office.
The couple had already downsized their stuff before buying the bus when they spent a year living out of 36-liter backpacks. The bus was an upgrade, though they continue to live with tiny wardrobes and fairly limited belongings.
    Original story: faircompanies....

I did notice they said they were saving for some kind of future build project for the family...so to the couple of critics that mentioned the children and privacy and all that sort of stuff that I hear ALL THE TIME , they are obviously looking towards the future and this is a great solution until the right opportunity comes along. I don't think the kids will mind one bit to be honest...this is how we bond and become closer as a family and build memories that we can reminisce about later in life...EXCELLENT BUILD...never mind the critics folks...keep on doing what you are doing!

Tiny house and alternative living spaces will/ can rebuild American families....Close interactions, civil communications, and “necessity VS accessory “ mentality will build character, appreciation for others, and unspoiled children....I’m so glad these families are being represented, and shine a light to non- stereotype living.

Long time subscriber here. I love the way this channel shows unconventional ways of living. The best part is it shows how something can seem so strange to some, but so normal for others. People come from all walks of life, and there are billions of us. Not everyone feels comfortable in traditional houses. The thought of traveling the world in your home is so amazing to me.

Just because people do not agree with everything that people are doing does not mean that they are bitter or resentful (or my favorite) "jealous"? You could say the same about you being bitter and resentful towards the people with differences of opinions! Is it always YOUR WAY? How do you get everyone in your bubble of existence to allow YOU to LORD over them and TELL THEM how you WANT THEM TO THINK, FEEL, ACT AND HOW TO SPEAK!? Socialism is strong in YOUR own LITTLE WORLD! The rest of us like our freedom to think for ourselves and if we do not agree, we simply do not agree! No resentment, no bitterness, just different! So quit being so damn demanding of everyone else and watch yourself because ultimately yourself is who YOU are responsible for...

Berke Beidler I am really shocked at the amount of space! I have seen several bus builds, but for some reason this seems the most spacious of all. I think a lot of it has to do with the dual function children’s play room/Murphy bed area. The mom pointed this out as well when she talked about most people having a big, stationary bed at the back of the bus that takes up so much space. This definitely gives me something to think about. One thing I would be interested in hearing about in interviews with those that live on a bus is exactly how they did their advance planning. My worst fear would be to get furniture in or build out and realize I really didn’t like the location. Do they use a software program? If so, which one?

Wow! I’m impressed with how they renovated this bus so well. I love to see young families think of ways to keep themselves out of debt. I know they said they went a little over their budget, but think of how much debt they would incur in buying a conventional home for about $240,000. The mortgage would be high and the loan is for 30 years! The bus is a better solution with an added feature: they can get in it and travel! How brilliant is that? Good job! I admire this couple and wish them all the best.

This is one of the best videos I've come across in a long time. Scott and Emily have made my day. They have an Orion 5. The chassis of the bus (the shell) was built in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Then, the chassis was put on a flatbed truck and sent to Oriskany, NY where the axles, windows and everything else was assembled. Once the bus was complete a driver would drive the finished product to it's destination, in this case, from Oriskany NY to Denver. Orion Bus Industries was last owned by Daimler Buses North America. The Orion factory made the Orion I, II, III, V and VII buses and sold them to municipalities across the country as well as Porto Rico. Some of the biggest customers were NYC, Toronto, Denver, DC, and sold them to places as far west as California and Washington.
How do I know this? I am a former Orion employee and have worked on every aspect of the Orion V and VII. Even the bus in this video was one of the buses I worked on. One of my last jobs was Engineering Instructional Changes. I would deal with engineering and production problems and create solutions. My brother was also a design engineer and now works for New Flyer bus company in Crookston MN.
Love what you did with the bus. Unfortunately, Daimler closed the factory a few years ago. However, if you have any questions about the Orion V, I am in touch with many of the former employees and I'm sure they could answer any questions you may have. The leaky air bag suspension was part of the bus kneeling feature that allowed the bus to squat, making it easier for passengers to enter and exit the bus. rhophoto@yahoo.com

When I was small my family lived in a tent on our farm family's(Calif.) orchard for ten months. To young to give a hoot. Later in life sold our Carlsbad Calif. home for $378,000.00. What counts
is how the family cares about each other not what they live in.

Good Lord, these two industrious, clever young people have thought of EVERYTHING. I am such a slouch! What a comfortable, functional home they have made of something notoriously uncomfortable. The children are obviously enjoying living there, and that's the best indication that mom and dad's ideas are gold : ) Thanks For Posting!

Love this series, wonder how she finds people who live in creative ways? I think this couple has guts and a sense of adventure. What a marvelous education for these children, to travel all over the world and US and see so much of nature, their parents, each other, and life! In a typical house, parents would be off to work all day, kids in daycare with incompetent boring people, and repeat the same routine, no exposure to other languages or cultures or people of different color, foods, smells, sights. These kids will be true global citizens! The bus is very well designed and built, even for a tight budget. Hope you all stay together and build strong bonds!

Great video I built a city bus 18+ years ago an AM general lots of room great buses for that its a great way to make some decisions that life throws at you very smart way to make your plans as your family grows even if you find that place you want to be in life and settle down you'll always have your coach to go play if you want
Once you get the bug you'll never get rid of it I'm now building an MCI MC9 now that the kids are grown and gone momma wants to travel so good for you as far as what others say who cares its your life and smart thinking my hats off to you, happy trails.

Yes I have seen that done. But I just isn't that part of the kids play area. I was thinking dad could move his office to that spot. And then I remembered the play area. I sure they will work it out like they have done the rest of the options they have worked out. But that is a good idea about the table.

Lots of nay-sayers in the comment sections as usual. Talkin bout how "they couldn't do this for very long" and "what about the kids privacy?!" Ummmm did you listen to the guy? He said himself that he realised that it wasnt forever, that it was something that worked for now and managed to be affordable.
What ever happened to enjoying each day, making memories with your young family and dare I say it - having an adventure?
I guess when the negative keyboard warriors get to the end of their lives wondering why they lived so sad this family will look back at all their wonderful memories and laugh.

    • @TheYourfaceable

It's really about the people you live with, I live in a relatively large house, about 1700 sqft but because of the roommates I live with you get the exact same feeling as in the video of just being a homey comforting place that everyone feels welcome and happy. Then again, I'd also go live like that with a beautiful wife and awesome kids any day of my life.

    • @debbieboring3422
      @debbieboring3422 6 лет назад +1

@ The Yourfaceable I agree I think it is more a matter of how you look at things. In some ways life is as good or not so good as you make it. Whether you are sick or healthy well off of not so well off. And I have dealt with both sets of circumstances. Stay with looking for happy in life it's there. I'm glad you enjoy your roommates and I hope some day you have your lovely wife and kiddos.

And yet...in spite of those stupid comments the American status quo is:
Couple buys $150-$250k "starter" house. Couple then has 2 kids and "out grows" the small house so they buy a $400-$500k McMansion which they then live paycheck to paycheck and go into debt to fill with furniture and toys, RVs, etc. With no college savings, kids move on to go into $80k in student loan debt for their BA in "Womyn Studies" and the couple downsizes...back into a "starter" size home only it costs $100k more now then it did back then and they try to make it on SS and a meager 401k. Or..they sell McMansion and buy an RV to live in full time and then have to endure youtube comments about how that won't work when they are in their 80s. ;-)

I think the most important thing is family so as long as you have your family anywhere you live and whatever structure you live in is home. Your kids look very happy and healthy so obviously you are great parents and doing something right. I think your home is great and in this world people think you need to live in a mansion and be disconnected from your kids and everyone is in a different room. That's why families lose touch and are so far apart from one another. God bless good luck and I wish you all the best.

The most beautiful remodel yet!!! 😀
Very nice and anyone thinking kids wouldn’t appreciate living this way obviously do not have children!!!
This is just an absolutely fabulous learning experience for them (even considering whether they’ll be going with placing the kids in today’s crappy public school system -OR- whether they decide on home schooling)...
And, what a fantastically fun way to live,... RIGHT!!!!!!!
    I am so envious!!!!
And wow.. just imagine,...how nice a family they’ll be... (esp, in a smaller space such as this, one then learns to be super considerate of others privacy, sharing the few material things one has, AND ALSO,... how one would them truly realize WHATS REALLY NECESSARY IN LIFE!!!!)
Think about how much time your’d be spending OUTDOORS, as well....
Fishing, hunting, swimming in creeks and lakes... JUST “LIVING OFF [AND IN] THE LAND”,... as FATHER meant one to!!!
    Yep....
loving this,... and their wonderful close-knit family,... as
THESE ARE THE DAYS WHEN GREAT MEMORIES ARE MADE!!!
CONGRADS ON FINDING THAT PEACE WE ALL WASTE SO MUCH TIME SEARCHING OUT IN LIFE...
    No McMansions
No bags and boxes of Macy’s, and Walmart junk... NO HOARDING...
(Maybe a bit of looking for gemstones, cool shells or rocks lol)
    But, YEAH.....
Just really enjoying each other in FATHER’S beauty
    👶🏻👶🏻👶🏽👩🏻🐣🦅🐇🌿☘️🌱🌿🍄🎍🌻🌸🌷🌺✨🔥🌎🌙☄️🦋🐛🐝🐞🐠🐟🐏🐑🕊🕊🕊⛈🌤🌈💨☃️🍎🍊
    Bbq’ing....
And surely even room for a sweet little CHRISTmas TREE!!!!!!!!!
    🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
I AM TRULY CONSIDERING MAKING MY LIFE SIMPLER NOW
    DOWNSIZING...
    MINIMIZING...
    GOING SOLAR PANEL ENERGY...
AND COOKING OUT IN SPRING, SUMMER, AND FALL....
Storing up on canned during winter to keep everyone inside, where it’s cozy and warm....
    JUST WONDERFUL...
And as long as the tires are good, the engine runs well, the brakes are safe...... AND YOU HAVE SAFETY MEASURES, such as a good and secure locking system at all points (to keep the kids INSIDE and the crazies OUTSIDE,...
    WHAT MORE COULD ONE WANT!!!!!
You can still have internet and even television, if you want...
    ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!!!!

Double Deck (DD) would be more expensive since DDs are worth more, especially in the UK where smaller operators try to buy whatever they can for their usually short term expansion of their bus network although assuming that your in the USA, your only options really would be an Alexander Dennis Enviro 500 or E500MMC so your probably better off with a bendy bus such as the New Flyer D60/D60LF or X60

Well I have watched a lot of tiny homes and converted buses. Their use of space is amazing. For not having any building experience even with Dads help. They have done a lot with the design of the space they have. I think they have a gift they have maybe not explored completely. Thanks for another video with new ideas.

And because it's an RV, and they're in Colorado, they don't need to have a special license to drive it (since it's no longer a transit bus). (Some states would require a CDL to drive that.)
