As a Ford Master technician in Denver for many years back in 99 the Ford engineers showed-up one day at the dealer with one of these. Of course back then the engineers would take prototypes like the Cobra R or the SHO Taurus for instance and drive them cross country. Anyway, Denver was a primary destination due to the altitude that they needed to test at. And my dealership was the associated dealership with the engineer team. As a result being I was the lead driveability technician I got to drive any of this type of stuff when the engineers showed-up. My point being is I road tested the very first Cobra R before it was available for the street. Interestingly because it was a prototype it had quite a bit of test equipment connected so the engineers could do their thing. Another point that Doug I don't think mentioned is the Cobra R has independent rear suspension.

I had a deposit on one of these, but decided to back out because I already had two '95 Cobra Rs, #242 and #191, as well as a '99 Viper GTS ACR. The #242 car I bought in Nov 1996 and I still own it. The #191 car is Jason Priestley's retired IMSA GS #46 endurance road racer. I ended up selling that car after open-tracking it for a couple of years. I was invited to hang out at a race in Phoenix with the TF Racing team who were sponsored by Zippo (they may still be). This is the team that J.P. ran with. There, I asked why they weren't running any 2000 Cobra Rs (they had five '95 Rs there with 2 podium finishes) and was told "Look out on the track. There's one 2000 Cobra R out there and it's in 7th place. They're just not competitive because IMSA bumped them up into Super Grand Sports (SGS) where they have to run against Porsches, Corvettes and the like because of the HP increase over the '95s. They just can't win in SGS."
The '93 Cobra Rs were even less competitive because they were running a 5.0 against Firebirds with 5.7s, a T-56 (vs. the Mustang's T-5s that kept breaking), and a much larger fuel tank, so had to make fewer fuel stops. That's why Ford put 21 gallon Fuel Safe fuel cells in the '95 and 2000 Rs, 2 gallons more than the Pontiacs. The '95s got Tremec TR3550 HD's which were known to have faulty cases that kept cracking and leaking. Mine did. That's why I put a blueprinted Viper T-56 in mine.
The '95 Rs were by far the most competitive. At Daytona Speed Week in 1996 the '95 Cobra Rs took the first 4 out of 5 places in their class. I can assure you that my '95 R will absolutely smoke the car shown here, but the entire car has been highly modified. A big reason I decided not to buy the 2000 was because there was NO aftermarket support for these N/A 5.4s at the time. The 351W, on the other hand, can be anything you want. It just takes money and time (and patience).
The front splitter on these were very flimsy and would flap around at high speeds. You can see that the owner of this car added bracing to prevent this. You can see the stainless steel Dzus fasteners where the splitter is attached to the bracing. Ford sold the Cobra R Recaro seats for a while. I wanted a set but they were close to 2 grand each. Ouch! I put in Momo Acropolis USA 1-piece seats (they're much lighter and way less $).
I was the founding President of the NorCal SVTOA region for the first 2-1/2 years and had a chance to ride in one of these. It was pretty impressive for a stock Mustang at the time. We were flown out to the Bondurant school in Phoenix where I was able to meet with Tom Scarpello of SVT. I placed 3rd in the Auto-X competition. 1st place went to a complete newbie, 2nd place to a professional race car driver, then me, out of 23 drivers. I was okay with that. The race car driver was embarrassed.
    Cheers, CobraRGuy

It seemed so modern and spacey inside with the swooping lines of the interior and sharp line of the exterior. I was so proud, kept it immaculate for 8 years. "Of course when you hit the turn signal stalk, you felt like you were in a 1997 Aerostar." The complete total facial and tonal change, absolutely loved it and loved that this car was reviewed!! I saved up money as a teenager to have a "New Edge" Mustang like this although the puny V6 and glad Doug touched on interior quality.
Even in '00, this interior design was very long in the tooth and panel fit was non-existent in many places. I still very much love the script text on the steering wheel and on the passenger side dash, while the panels are easy to remove from doors (they were just on hooks outside a few screws), the quality was far and away worse from other companies. I remember sitting in a Honda from that time and my comment was "Wow, your door shuts that easily without you having to pull hard, wow & Where are holes (gaps)?"
As I've gotten older, I would love to have a GT or something similar, but as others have mentioned the used car market is just crazy with regard to cost. I'm glad that the used car market is slowly going down, but it's going to take time to get to where we were in 2019.
I'm so glad Doug is reviewing cars of my youth. Would love to see him review the anemic 1995 GT which is hard to believe Ford issued such a sad V8 at the time.

My favorite Ford as the standard SVT Cobra in Gran Turismo 2 and then Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec as this car. The best looking late 90s Mustangs with that different front bumper style at 3:22. Have always loved how much more aggressive it made this specific Mustang look, and of course that iconic in my opinion, naturally aspirated engine whine it makes when you drive it in those games. Childhood and an absolute dream car of mine I hope to drive one day. Also, that V8 sound at 20:00 is music to my ears!

    Okay, THIS. MADE. MY. DAY.
I'm not the most knowledgeable on Mustang history, so I didn't know about the lawsuit stuff involving the Cobra! Good stuff. I only would have been 10 years old then anyway but when the Cobra R arrived to do battle with the ACR and the ZO6 in the early 2000's, I wanted all three pretty badly. It was such a cool time, drag racing was cool but now I was getting into sports car racing. I'm a huge Viper guy, always have been, but those three models were so significant to me cause I can pinpoint that as the beginning of the 90's American track car era. They were all naturally aspirated, track focused cars and just over time I grew to love the trio more and more. Stick them in my garage, I'd keep them forever.
But anyway back to the R, that has always been my favorite Mustang of all time for specifically the reasons you mentioned Doug and what it was intended for. The low production, the big nasty V8, the spartan base interior, the aero dynamics, the specific wheels and side exhaust. I love every inch of the Cobra R, it's just so awesome. I've probably photographed a handful over the 20+ years I've been shooting cars. Literally about five and just in museums and yet I've only just sat in ONE that had Rutgers 'R' magnets on the fenders that randomly appeared at one of the local car shows. I'd absolutely nerd out if I got to drive one.
Heck, funny story I have been to Ford's at Carlisle. I got a high school buddy into cars, he bought a Mustang and wanted me to tag along for the day. I had to do research on banners and graphics for the Chrysler Nationals event (we had a 30th anniversary Viper display and moved a collection of 40+ Vipers) and I figured I'd get to see another Cobra R, great idea. NOPE. Out of some 3000+ cars that came to Carlisle there were like a dozen Ford GT's, even the Robertson Racing GTLM's, but not a single 2000 Cobra R on the property. To this day my brain still doesn't comprehend Ford only built 300 R's when they made so many of that generation.
So thanks Doug for reviewing the Cobra R and nice meeting you during lunch at the Javitz in 2018. :D

So what did you think when you saw the S197 in 2004? (I know it came out in 05, but it debuted in 04) Just curious, as we’re probably close to the same age. I remember seeing a picture of the 2005 Mustang GT for the first time in 2004, and ended up staring at it for an hour. The S197 is what made me buy a New Edge. I wanted an S197 but couldn’t afford it.

@@goracks69 I liked the S197 right off the bat. Sometimes it takes a while for me to warm up to new generations of vehicles but not for that one. I was in college in 04 and working as a tech at a Ford dealership so I got to drive a lot of them. I really loved doing new vehicle preps and being the person to put the first few miles on a brand new mustang GT!

@@Friscorockhead Me too. Still remember seeing it in a magazine at my best buddies house. I was in grade 12 in 04 and just about to enter the workforce at Blockbuster. (Lol) BUT The kinda funny thing is that I ended up driving A LOT of Fords (and Lincolns) too. Like tens of thousands. This is because I got so into driving that I left blockbuster and got a job in the yard at a Ford plant shipping vehicles that came off the line. Then, 8 years ago, I went from driving outside in the yard with the shipping company to inside the plant and have been building Fords and Lincolns ever since. Lol, what are the odds?

The dome light above Doug's head when he's driving was also used in the 90's Mercury Sables. My dad had a '96 Sable when I was growing up and I instantly recognized it 😂

I anticipation of this car coming to a Chicago suburb showroom, all the other Ford products were removed. Then the truck showed up. The driver started the Cobra R with a deep bellow. Idled it off the truck and rolled it into store. In the center of the showroom floor. The driver then gave a couple of quick raps on the gas pedal. The exhaust was so loud, that all the windows in the store vibrated. It was raw, it was beautiful and it only came in one color.
Doug says that the Cobra R did not come with a stereo. Yet the Cobra R that arrived that day, had a 580 watt monsoon stereo. With only 2 speakers per seat, installed next to your head. Also, the msrp of that car was $50,000. But a lot of dealerships were demanding $10,000 over msrp. Ford made it clear, that if they found out any dealership was putting a markup on the Cobra R, those dealerships would lose the privilege to sell SVT products.

The light grey between the dash and other panels actually was a good choice . The all black was very meh ( I currently have it in mine) also the center square dash paneling fitment is so bad that I and almost all others I know who have it had to put a thin felt craft strip around the outline of the panel because it squeaked so bad while driving .

What's neat about the Y2KR is that it was a turning point in OEM support of the aftermarket. Prior days the SN95 was gaining a lot of popularity for use in grassroots racing aside from Steeda, Saleen, MM, Bondurant, etc.. throwing a lot of effort in semi-pro circuits. With new circuits like American Iron and AIX made stangs look very track focused aside from the big HP drag cars, accustomed with fox bodies. MM and Griggs revolutionized the SN95 chassis for everything from HPDE to hill climbs. Ford took noticed and thus you got the [failed] 99 Cobra and this. And the following years you saw them put the nail in the coffin for the old school-DIY aftermarket industry--where you now buy turn-key track ready mustangs direct from Ford (e.g. Shelbys, track packs) or goto authorized "tuners". And aside from the same parts skyrocketing in price for the DIYer.
Y2KR DNA lives in every track pack mustang today and a turning point in the industry under the SN95 platform.
