- Its the build up time here in the Top End of Australia, its time to get propagating and pruning in the garden. In this short easy to follow video I will show you how we propagate and prune our Draceana plants. It easy as!
It would have been nice to see the update of this plant propagation to know if it really worked.
I never knew this is how these plants could be done. I am amazed and pleased at the same time. Thank you so much for these tips.
can you do a video of before and after...esspecially after, so we can see how much it grows :)
Me too! I have never seen this work out except the top part in water. Tried propagating just like this, but unless you do this at a special time of year, or climate I am at a loss.
You’ve just answered all my questions! Thanks. Love from Ireland 💕
I like how you do your videos short and to-the-point and you are a very peaceful person and it's and it's enjoyable to watch your videos
thank you for sharing this vid, im partially sighted so watching your steps has made me decide i will split my trees as you have shown great.
Delightful video. Loved the very manual camera adjustments! Thank you!
Thank you for this video. I'm in Southern Michigan, USA. I have a dracaena that is getting overgrown, your video is the clearest that I found on how to prune it. I was very nervous about cutting it back but as soon as the weather warms up I'm going to permanent based on your suggestions. thank you.
Thanks so much! Very informative. Love from Chicago!
Thank you for such concise and precise tips. Loved this
Very nice video! Very informative and hands on! Would love to see more on tropical plant care! I just moved to Florida so I’m very anxious to get started!
First time I see a well explained video thank you
Awesome! Thank you so much for sharing you're knowledge on dracaenas. X
Thank you, great video, answered all my questions!!!
perfect info and presentation. Thank you!
Super helpful video, thank you!!Going to try propagating today and I’m excited to see how my marginata will grow!! 😊
I appreciate you sharing your videos❤❤❤❤12:23 in the morning and I feel like gardening😂😂😂😂
Thank you...easy to follow and straight forward.
Awesome video
Excellent information. Thank you !
Wow i had no clue this could be done! thank u for sharing. I just added a marginata to my plant family. m excited to see how it grows.
This is great! I have one of these and it got very leggy but I never thought that there was something to do about it :) Although it's scary to cut it up like that haha I might consider doing it.
A before and after vid as suggested by others would be super nice. Thanks for your work :)
wow this is so interesting
thank you so much!
Loved everything about this video.
Very informative, you clearly enjoy what you do. Thank you for sharing. I came to RUclips because I received a bouquet of roses with a dracaena plant into the mix. The roses died off, but the dracaena is still strong, so I am going to try your tips and hope it will work with my free plant😁. Thanks again.
Thank you for putting this vid up. I now know how to👍🏻
Interesting. I didn't know I could do that with my Draecanas. Thanks!!!
How to take cuttings of Pink passion Cordaline plant
Have you tried it?
All I can say is awersome and I'll do that on the weekend
Thank you. I have one that's 3 feet tall and now I know I can make more plants!
This was so helpful !
well i didnt know u could do this! Thanks do much for the advice !
thanks to sharing informations about dracaena with us.Thank you so much
Thank you so much for your time, I never knew it was that easy. 😂I LOVE RUclips🤣I have a few Draceana that have been with me for many moons & have grown taller then me🤣✌🏾
Very helpful.
Thank you kindly. 😊
Thanks so much for this video - very easy to follow. My Dracena plant has grown to over 5', with a bushy top, but about 5' of just trunk! I had a little shoot near the top. Because of your video, I'm not afraid to make several cuttings, and continue to enjoy the dracaena, which was a plant from my late Mom's. thanks again!!!
Thank you! Off to go pruning now...
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. One of four planted in the same pot got root rot, the obvious signs started with yellowing leaves but I thought it was possibly the close proximity to our gas-powered wall heater but then noticed only one of them were losing leaves and, the worst sign, very bottom of the stem closest to the soil is mushy. Was thinking I could just cut all the dead leaves then straight up chop halfway up the stem and check the others roots for rot. Thank you for encouraging my experiment!!!
This was awesome thank you so helpful
Thanks for that information. Will try.
Exactly the information I hoped to find! Thank you for the tips; my plant is now a mere four inches from the ceiling, so is ready to become a group rather than one lonely, lanky fellow.
Does anyone know…will the stalks have trouble sprouting indoors in 50% humidity? Should I put them outside or mist them?
Great tips, thank you!
I have owned one of these for over 20 years and it’s now well over 8ft tall with three shoots off one stem. I had no idea I could just prune it back like that. It really, REALLY needs done but I’m terrified I’ll kill it. It was tiny when I first got it and I’ve had it longer than my kids! I guess I’ll just have to be brave and deal with it. I’m running out of room for it.
Did you do it? I have one that is probably 6 years old and I had no idea you could do this but I'm scared I will kill it.
pokermel I did! I was so nervous. I cut 10 “sticks” and so far, 6 have rooted and all have small shoots forming from their tops. The other 4 aren’t totally dead yet either but I may have kept them in the wrong place with not enough light. Given time they may yet live.
I left one 6ft stem on the original plant just in case and for the first time in 20+ years it has begun to sprout another branch. The cutting must have encouraged it.
@@EmilysMum1981 I cut mine in half yesterday. 🙈 I mean she was pretty violent with that plant so I figure it should be ok! 😄
Lashonda Love so far so good. Most of my sticks have up to three bumps forming at the tops which are new shoots starting to grow. They’re in a mini greenhouse outside now but not in constant direct sunlight so they’re well lit and warm. I’m checking them all the time because I’m worried I’ll kill them and I’ve had that plant longer than I’ve had my children. Haha
@@lashondalove_ I checked mine today and the stick that was cut in half is now brown when it was green a few days ago. I hope that doesn't mean I killed it. 😭
Just cut my over-grown and crooked plant! Thanks for the information. I never knew you could propagate dracaena
Lord I covered my mouth in horror when you were cutting at the plant and yanking off the leaves!! 😩😭😱 would love to see a follow up on how these got on 🙂
Omg me too!! My mouth was open. Lol
Thanks for sharing. 💛
that was great, thank you!
Very good video! Thx!
Thanks so much. Hi from QLD.
Thank you so much 😊,,,,,from Russia 🇷🇺 with Love ❤️
*Very nice* 👍
Thanks so much for that video! I can't wait to dry it on my dracaena!
Thank you so much for this vedio great 👍👍👍
Wow so beautiful

Very nice
I enjoyed watching your video! Ypu are cute..Thanks for sharing
Brilliant. Thank you .
Thank you very helpful
Wow how cool! I just rescued an overwatered one at lowes it’s 6 feet tall for $20.00 I will do this. Thanks!
My neighbor gave me one and a few months after planting outside (Tampa, FL area) it has a baby plant coming up next to it. Growing really well.
Hiya, neighbor! North Tampa, here, just down the road from the USF campus. A friend planted his dragon outside a few months ago. I keep hoping it throws a baby so I can snatch it up and have one of my own. Fingers crossed. LOL. :)
hows it going now?
Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
Aaaawesome !
Thank your
Now off to prune my mother in laws plant. 😳
I literally screamed when I saw you cutting it
I think I have this tree. It was about 18” tall a little less than 3 years ago. It’s 10’ tall now and only has one stalk and I have it outside on the front porch. It’s only getting afternoon sun but we live in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Thanks for your advice on how I should prune it
Can you do updates of how they grow in videos for people who want to understand the growing , what it looks like and such . :) Thank you .
thank you
Thanks for your excellent easy to follow instructions. Hopefully I will be as successful as you. Thanks!
One question I have is, how do your dracaena plants that are in the ground outside handle winter? I live in the mid Atlantic region of the US and while unpredictable our winters can be quite cold. Appreciate your advice.
AMEI esse vídeo agradeço muito
Thank you!! I was so worried I'd have to toss mine after the top half broke!
I just accidentally chopped the top off mine with ceiling fan so now I'm sitting here in tears! Momma is 8 feet tall. How much do I water after potting?
Wish me luck! We are going to do this with mine today!
MarG_est how did it go? Did they grow back? Ty!
Hello Regina, I'm so happy to come across your video. I recently had a tree branch fall on my Dracaena and split it in half. Thanks to your video, I will cut the three fallen branches down to size and replant them. I do have a few questions though.
(1). Where the tree branch hit, it tore a bit of the bark on the main trunk that the three branches were on. I strapped it back in place using some small rubber hose with a zip tie through it to hold it together. Will doing this work to heal the main stem/trunk or should I cut it all down and start over. The plant still looks nice, even with the missing branches.
(2). I live in Orlando, Florida, USA. We are coming up on the 2022 Fall/Winter season. Will this have any effect on the new growth taking root? It is obviously an outside plant in a big heavy pot and hard to move. I can do the new shoots inside in smaller pots and repot them outside in the spring. We rarely see weather below freezing. (0 Celsius) Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for posting.
hey it's really nice video. thanks for the information plss tell me can do in this rainy season cutting grow red dracaena
Oh thank you for sharing this tip i have A darcaema marginata and the leaves goes brown wich makes me.sad i don'T know wat i'Ve done wrong ..now im gonna replant theese ..hopfully they recovr soon..
I just a got a tall one for free and was so excited and the top broke as soon as I got it home and I’m trying to savage it. I hope this works
Wow
Thanks
Thank you. Had no idea.. please, some guidance of care once the Stems are rooted.
In the light? Dark? Frequency of watering? Thank you
Thank you. Currently struggling with my Dragon tree. Started of well but now the leaves are continously falling.
These plants have a pretty massive root system, I wish you would have shown how you deal with that. I just repotted one that I've had for a while and I just whacked off about half their roots. I hope I haven't killed it.
That’s fine. Next time only whack off 1/3. Also trim. 2 inches around the circumference.
When do you start watering them once planted the cuttings? I am assuming they'd need to be in shade until they show new growth? I usually use soft wood rooting hormone gel for succulents so would I be using hard wood one for Draceanas? Thanks in advance.
Without an update, we have no idea if your propagation technique works.
I'm in my mid 20s and have a dozen house plants or so.. Great videos, thank you for the tips!
Quick question for this one specifically: when (what season) should this be done during? Spring? Anytime? It's winter here now in Ontario (Canada), and my Draceana is potted, kept inside at temp of around 19-24 celcius. Side note if it changes anything, I will be buying a humidifier for my living room where most of my plants are.
I've had it for over 5 years, and have been "looping" the stem/cane as it grows, which was interesting, but I now want to propagate it & have the original re-start from the getgo.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely
Spring, when the plant is actively growing is the best time.
Exactly what I've been looking for my Dracena at work if all leggy and about 7 ft tall. Poor things not going to know what's hit it🤣
I have a plant that's a good 5 meters high in my back yard it's a beast. I have rip it out for a Reno, can I propgate large limbs directly into the ground of a new garden bed?
I've been wondering what to do with our sad looking Dracaena plant. It was the first house plant that we bought and we've had it for a long time but it's terrible leggy now. I know now to turn the pots regularly to avoid it growing too much in one direction but I found this out a bit too late for this one. I was worried it was going to have to be put out to pasture but looks like I will wait until spring and then give this a go.
Is there a season for it? Or can we do it any time during the year?
2:55 That’s what I said, Lisa. “Foilage!”
I had to do it..lost the single stem still in pot, was about 14 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches wide. The head got a lot of roots, it has been in a vase of water for months, one stem section sprouted leaves and roots, and the other section lots of roots but no leaves. Any suggestions on how to get some sprouting leaves?
I have two of these for about 5 months, I repotted them and have them at my front window. Several of the tips are brown.and now droppy. Maybe I will try this.
Is there a particular time of year that we should propagate? Its Nov now...
Lots of questions so bare with me. Is there a best time of the year to do this, I'm in the U.S.A. ? Also I was told to cut them on a 45 degree angle but you cut yours straight across, so does it really matter? How deep should they be planted in soil? Do you recommend they be planted in soil or rooted i n water?
Thanks for this. I have one of these that's 20 feet tall in my house in Minnesota. I'm out of room. I wonder how many trees i can get from propagating?!?!
With a 20ft plant you’ve definitely caught my interest. How did it turn out ?
I just topped my 40 year old one. My mum got it for an engagement present.
I hope the top survives! Then it will be able to continue continuously growing taller.
It's pretty terrifying cutting something that is so old and has sentimental value.
It feels like it's part of the family.
The top had a lot of leaves. It probably has about 500mm of stem with leaves and I left about 300 mm below the leaves. What's the likelihood it'll survive? They sound pretty hardy
Hello, I have pruned my plant, I just cut it so it’s about 18 inches long, how long will it take for new new shoots to come out? Thanks
Cuando se riegan luego de poner los cortes? La tierra estaba seca no? Espero una semana aproximadamente?
Hi, awesome video! Know any good ways to promote (buds/spikes) growth after cutting?? My 4.5 ft tall plant grew straight up for 2 years, cut it back few weeks ago... the top half seems to be happy; leaves are doing ok. But the mother plant/ bottom half hasn't produced any little buds yet nearing a month later, and the roots are huge! Im afraid it's dying cause of shock... I repotted it to a a larger pot as well the same day. Lmk what you think? Thanks-
Cutting the trunk won't shock the plant. Buds will appear in time as long as the conditions are right. Keep it out of the cold.
It will only go into shock if you divide the root system or cut roots.
I live in Woodland, California, USA and our humidity is super low most of the year. If I do this to my plant, would you recommend using a plastic bag over the plant to create a fake "green house" effect? Maybe it might induce it to establish its roots faster?
Will this same thing work with Dracaena marginata (dragon tree)
Mine getting a bit big now with 3 branches.
