Final Fantasy 7 Remake brings back Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, and the city of Midgar some 23 years after the release of the original game. The remake is an expanded retelling of the first part of the original's story, adding new events, new dialogue, and new character development--but much of what appeared in the 1997 FF7 has been brought back, either in an updated form, or as a callback to the PSX classic.
Where FF7 Remake isn't exactly retelling the original game's tale, it's littered with Final Fantasy 7 jokes, references, callbacks, and Easter eggs. We've compiled a huge list of those callbacks, ranging from visual cues and graphically updated recreations, to tiny in-jokes meant to impress die-hard fans. Check them all out in the video above.
We've scoured just about every inch of Final Fantasy 7 Remake to discover every secret and collectible hidden in Midgar. Head over to our rundown of Final Fantasy 7 Remake guides and walkthroughs for every strategy, secret, and tip you need to get everything out of the game.

You may have noticed that the main character, Cloud Strife, is familiar. This is because he's actually the main character of the original game, Cloud Strife.
🤭🤭🤭
Wow, and here I thought his name was Squall Leonhart in the original!!.
McNishy symmetry
Smart-ass lol!
Now that's just unbelievable
Has anyone noticed how the three tiaras from Corneo's stash quest are designed after diamond, ruby, and emerald weapon.
They are also a nod to the tiaras you get in the origional when getting clouds dress for the meeting with Corneo
We probably won’t be seeing them in the final game RIP ;~;
@It's Alright Cloud is wearing it around his neck when he gets the Blue Corset outfit.
Also the Hyper behind the bed. lol. Squaresoft had a good sense of humor
In the original FF7, when you're reintroduced to Aerith at the Church and she asks you if you remember her, you have the option to select "Oh yeah, you're the slum drunk!"
in FF7 Remake, when you meet Aerith at the Loveless theater and she's being attacked by the Whispers and Cloud doesn't see them yet, he gives her a look as if she is, in fact, someone who appears to be drunk.
😂😂😂
“I’m not gonna spoil who that guy Tifa gave a tour around Nibelheim is, but that materia flashback is from the chapter when Sephiroth kills Aerith in the temple”.
Oh, alright.
I thought that was funny also.
🤦
i was looking for this comment XD
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
To be fair, "Aerith dies" is essentially a non-spoiler at this point. People who have never played FF7 tend to know that. For gamers, that spoiler ranks up there with Darth Vader's true name.
The other spoiler however......yeah. You can go into FF7 knowing about Aerith, but that other spoiler is the one that will definitely catch you off guard.
you missed out barret humming the victory tune at some point during a cutscene
Ddddun dun dun ddun
I hate it ever time he humming the victory tone
And after like every other battle...
Could be worse. Could be Prompto doing the Dub step version after many battles.
@@yoda908 What are you even talking about?
During the bike ride Jessie has alot of the lines from the Gold Saucer play.
I WONT FORGET THAT!
EDK..
A huge one ppl missed is if you go back down into Corenos mansion the room in the basement is locked and you hear someone trapped down there. In the original there is someone also trapped down there strapped to the bondage table.
I found that one. Thought it was just his men that Tifa and Aerith beat up.
Leaves you a materia when you get him outta there.
@@joshuacox3555 In the remake or original game?
@@Michelle-DiPalo in the remake. It is under him. In the original, I think it was just in the corner.
@@joshuacox3555 How or when can you get back in? I've tried and the door was always blocked.
I can't believe you don't remember Johnny living his best life in Costa Del Sol, Tamoor.
That scene where cloud meets tifa at the bar is a callback to when cloud met tifa at the bar in the original. gamespot logic
Wow…I never woulda pieced that together!!! Thanks man 🙏
Fun fact: the comments section of this video lists more interesting easter eggs/comparisons than the video itself!
If you look at Red XIII’s head dress, he has 2 green materia, that is the starting spells he gets when he joins your party. Fire and Lightning if i’m not wrong.
No sorry, it is not fire and lightning. It is fire + all and assess
@@alexanderkazakov6499 Well done!
I love that they added actual slots on the weapon that hold the materia. Nice little touch and it looks pretty badass
When Hojo suggests breeding Aerith with a SOLDIER during the board meeting in the Shinra Building he mentions they could use either an S Type or G Type SOLDIER. S standing for Sephiroth and G standing for Genesis.
Of course! After all, cross-breeding is his FETIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISH!!!!
Raise your hand if you want to watch that breeding process
@@proudmanyakis🖕
G stand for gillian. Angeal's mother name
No.
I guess many people don’t realize this, but Leslie (along with Kyrie) are not actually brand new. They where characters in a ff7 advent children prequel book. So yea not the most established ff7 characters, but not the first time they where used.
I heard about that, that a lot of the stuff that happens in the slums comes from that book. Such as that woman...Merielle I think.
@@drakenfist Im rusty since I read the book. But yea.
shirox11 Do u know where I can find this book?
@@kong.615 I don't know where to find the book itself. I know it has been translated now, but i actually read a fan translated version a few years ago. (don't remember where though) The book in question tho is called : The kids are alright a turks sidestory.
shirox11 No problem
The benches that are available have a homage question mark looking Symbol display from original Games save points.
Really? Never noticed, but cool.
when fighting rude + reno, rude gently attacks tifa sometimes.
He does that to Aerith too. You mean the neck chop?
@@crimsondragon20 I think rhat is because Turks should not hurt Aerith
He crushey on her
Because Rude has a crush on Tifa
In the original game, Rude will not attack Tifa unless it's the only option (i.e. if all other characters are downed).
Man the one thing I missed was dropping into a room full of buff men 🙃
I was disappointed this didn't happen. 😔
@@kura2ninja944 Partly cause, this Isn't the remake we were promised.
still....cloud in a dress?? anyone??
@@silvaziejm3245 I think people would burn buildings if they didn't see that scene lol.
Somebody pointed out in a ff7r group that the scene where Aerith intercepts Cloud at the start of Chapter 9 may be derived from the scene where Cloud dreams of Aerith going to the Sleeping Forest from the OG. Thus the tears.
yup
Missed one, during the hologram about the history of the Cetra it shows two cetra under a tree... that looks alot like the scene during Bugenhagens explanation of the lifestream and life and death.
Also, the ship in the back ground looks like it is the invincible. I thought that was cool, even though it was IX instead of a VII reference. Still a cool throwback
Missed one:
10:20 look at Aerith’s drawings on the wall. You’ll notice to the top left that there’s a pyramid like structure veiled in black unlike the other colorful drawings on the wall. Looks like temple of the ancients!
Eligor also has a weapon for Aerith that can ONLY be obtained by stealing it from him.
It's just a striking staff, which you can buy later
Some of the computer screens in Shinra HQ has the original ff7 maps of the locations your at. And during the tour of Shinra HQ, the space rocket model is the same as the original rocket.
Can we talk about how Biggs is Charlie Sheen from Commando??
OMG Right!, and Wedge is Literally Badger from Breaking Bad.
Not commando...Hot Shots
I swear I was the only one who thought this!
Biggs design also looks like one of the dudes in the first Predator film.
I thought the same thing Biggs is a young Charlie Sheen
My fave callback is the subtle, vertical pan of the camera back to the dining room when Elmyra is retelling the story of how she found Aerith.
Woah, a character from the original is in the remake?? What a twist!
Good ol Johnny boy. He was a cool character.
@@rommix0 nope
Cloud tells Wedge 'not interested' in the beginning of the game. 'Not interested' is a common choice in the original when denying a decision. Cloud also says it twice to Rufus in Advent Children
There's the detail about Barret and his line: "Never trust Shinra". Author didn't mentioned that Barret was one of the guys who tried to convince his friend that Shinra will make a life better for their little town (or so).
There’s one very small callback from the original when you meet the children with Aerith and one of the kids follows you around.
7:54 Leslie lost his fiancée 6 months ago.. not years
Leslie literally says this in-game during the scene they cut to. These guys need to find a new writer.
There is a wagon similar to the one Aerith and Zack built by Leaf house.
I need to check it out
In FF7 and Remake you can steal from Eligor staff for Aerith, it has the same model in both games, but different names for some reason. Just a tiny detail since you mentioned Eligor.
Aren't they both the Striking Staff?
@@callmeshaggy5166 it's called Bladed staff in Remake.
Johnny is found in more places than just Tifa's bar...
The Johnny Experience
Unfortunately
“The most observant of you may have noticed that the name of the game contains Final Fantasy VII in it - it’s a callback to the original title which is, you’re not gonna believe it, FINAL FANTASY VII! What a twist, am I right?”
The animation that Cait Sith makes is a callback to the same animation made by an NPC in the original, which played after the rocket crashes.
I wouldve liked if one of the Easter Egg was the Flower Cart Zack built for Aerith and somewhere hidden is the quote "Midgar full of flowers, wallets full of money."
Also recalling CC. The hair ribbon is from Zack. haha!
they messed up with the ribbon though as Aerith was wearing it as a child when Elmyra was explaining how she and Aerith became family ..
@@BlackHairedBeauty25 oh yeah.... :( I'm still going to say its from Zack. haha! even if they messed up.
You do see A cart by the school I believe around that area
It would have been really cool if aeris said "conflict resolved" at the end of a random battle. Few will know why
Because she says led me your strength like Shion.....Xenosaga reference....glad you caught that
The god damn "Initiating combat mode" jumpscared me more times than I want to admit.
In the beginning of the game when you are on the train, Kyrie is just sitting there way before you meet her in the game. You cant talk to her or anything. I noticed on my 2nd hard playthrough.
For the one in 5:40, this is only true if you are doing Sam's versions of the side quests. They're very different if you're doing Madam M's version, which have a more FF X-2 feel to them.
*Ending scene of Original FF7 is same as Opening of FF7R*
Did anyone mention the random guy in the Sector 5 slums who comments on how Cloud is "young" and should "try everything?" I'm sure that was a not to the cut scene you get for revisiting the lab underneath Shinra Mansion in Neiblheim during Disk 3, where Zack and Cloud are riding in the back of a pick up truck on there way to Midgar
Adding on to the fact that Rude stops Reno from hurting Tifa, if you switch to her and try to fight Rude with her, he won’t fight her. He just puts her to sleep.
yeah, it's extremely clever game mechanics supporting subtle plot things
This not easter eggs it is remake game.
Did anyone else think that the airship during the virtual tour resembled the FFIX airship. I cant remember the name Lindblum or something. Invincible. Whatevs. I also feel like Neo-Midgar kinda resembled Balamb Garden from 8, but perhaps the old eyes are just playin tricks
Cait Sith is not actually pronounced Cat or Kate Sith. It's Kett-Shee. It's "Cat of the Fairies" in Irish/Gaelic.
Barret singing Victory fanfare after battles is the funniest nood.
You can find johnny in sector 7 slums
Golden saucer
And costa Dela sol hotel. Where he and Tifa will have a chat and Tifa insist on cloud to leave them both alone.. Poor cloud
Anyone else noticed Cloud's jump/hop backwards during the Edge of Creation cutscene with Sephiroth, the same as he would do in battle in the original once his turn was over. Also, Red XIII's pose in the elevator corridor scene that's exactly the same as his original character profile picture from the original booklet and promotional material. Gotta love them Easter Eggs!

5:03 Cloud and Aerith have their own SPORTS Headshots on the big screen
Just as big as Tidus the Blitzball Ace !
When first entering church walk up to the door to hear a call back from Reno
I've always believed that Aerith had to die to summon Holy successfully. Bugenhagen says "If a soul seeking Holy reaches the planet, it will appear." To me that means the "summoner" of Holy must merge with the lifestream in order for the planet to hear their prayers. It requires immense spiritual energy to cast. Aerith only being half or less than half Cetra doesnt have anywhere near the amount necessary to properly summon Holy and therefore accepts her fate and merges with the lifestream to fulfill her destiny. There are a lot of things in the remake that can be different but she still has to die. That's just my opinion though. It won't be any easier this time around because I already fell in love with her.
the underground shinra experimentation lab under sector 7 etc is a callback/forward to deepground in dirge of cerberus
there is also the exact same musical riff from DoC when climbing up the pillar stairs in FF7R as the helicopter fight in DoC
Is this an Easter Egg from the remake?
At the very beginning, if you examine the side of the train, you can see symbols that I think look a bit like this:
厶力百式九O形式6OO.
If that's correct, putting this through (the admittedly not very reliable) Google Translate provides:
Mandarin Hyakushiki Type 9 O Type 6OO
The Hyakushiki Masamune is a weapon in Final Fantasy tactics; a Masamune appears in FF7. Sephiroth's sword, I believe?
3:22 One little bit I want to add here just because of Easter Eggs, when you escape through the church with Aerith in the remake and come up to the top where you balance over large wooden structures similar to the way it looked in the original, you can actually see these various barrels from the original scattered around the edges of the wooden structures, you can't interact with them in the remake, but I just found it cool that the barrels are actually there.
There's 2 people in Wall Market talking about Alexander materia
you may have noticed ,
this is a remake of a game called FFVII
You forgot one thing : when you fight Rude, before you kill him he stops the battle, look at his watch and run away.
I loved how Red XIII identified himself. I'm so excited to play as him in the second game. (hopefully)
How about Aerith paying Cloud with a date just like how Zack did it with her when he came crashing down xD Aerith acts like Zack so much in the Remake and that’s a good thing
I am not sure if it is really true but, in the english version Aerith said this " because i'm not sick of you yet" while if translated from japanesse version she is saying " because i want to spent more time you" the line is exactly same with her 23 tiny little wishes from crisis core 😅
Having the same thing happen that was in the original is not an Easter egg or callback, it's a remake (hmm.. wonder why that'd be?) of that part of the story!!
Huh, that airship in Shinra's hologram presentation looks a lot like Cid's Enterprise airship from FF14.
I wonder if the Honey Bee Inn double heart Pizzagate reference will be mentioned.
I always thought that Corneo’s lackeys looked like rejects from Square’s old PS2 game, The Bouncer.
When you meet Aerith in the church at the start of chapter 8 her theme from advent children will begin to play when she starts to talk about her matiria hidden in her hair
In the train tunnels when you're making your way to the sector 5 reactor, there's a room/dead end corridor off to the side that has graffiti on the wall that has three pyramids with a dark background and other bits. This may be a reference to the debug room in which you fought three pyramids that gave massive exp

(Begin Rant)
I swear to god if they don't do the BIG CRY right, I'm gonna riot. Like.... No, I don't want it to happen, but I know it needs to happen. AND IT NEEDS TO CRUSH MY FUCKING SOUL. Like I'm talking complete sobbing and snot bubbles galore.
And before I go: No, I don't want a happy ending for her arc. So don't even go there with me. It's so integral to who cloud is, why we lover her extra much, and how evil Sephiroth is that it would throw off the whole story. It needs to rip our soul clean out of our bodies.
*End Rant*
This has been Kyle's FF7 Remake PSA
I bet Tifa dies now
she does have a happy ending to her arc, she saves the planet afterall.
But yeah, when that happened in the original, i broke furniture. When you have no idea it's coming, and the game was so fresh and novel.. that was hard to take. It also made me resolve to kill Sephiroth on the first try, no KOs. I did. Nearly had a nervous breakdown trying to breed an "ocean Chocobo". That scene pushed me through to the end of the game. I figured the whole thing out myself. So different when you couldn't just look up the answer on the internet. It took a couple days to figure out how to open the safe in the shinra mansion
@@SJNaka101 she better not!
I can't recall exactly when this occurs in the story, but in the Sector 5 slums I heard someone say in the background chatter "You can't trust those eco-terrorists, Avalanche or Averle or whatever (not sure on the actual wording)." In the original game "Averle" was written on the wall in graffiti in Wall Market, when you climb the "golden wire of hope" up to the plate on your way to rescue Aerith :)
Sooo, every time the remake does something that resembles the original game, that's an easter egg?
Got it.
Both Cloud and Vincent feel guilt about their life🤣
I love this Remake
There was a picture of the Al-Bhed Shinra in the Shinra Museum if you look closely you can see a masked man in the founders picture
Great video, dying to play this game when it finally comes out on Steam. thanks!
It sounds like he’s calling Aerith Eric! 😂💀😭
Leslie is actually not new, he's from the FF7 book.
Better be Aerith I swear to gawrrrr... I'm with ya man. I'm sure these remakes will be fun to play, and the story will be good, but the original game had alot of symbolism and meaning with the whole life stream, circle of life, Fighting Jenova Birth, Jenova Life, Jenova Death. And Aeriths archetype as the innocent being sacrificed to save the world is as timeless as well, religion.
I like that you didn’t spoil Zach but you did spoil fucking areis dying
These really aren't easter eggs...these are all just call backs. An easter egg would be how Shinra from FF10 can be scene in a photo at the Shinra building.
@It's Alright Because it wasn't in the original ff7 game, and Shinra was confirmed to be the founder of Shinra company in a Q&A after both games were released, and it is something that can be easily missed and I don't think you know what a call back to something is.
I hated those whack a mole robots the most lol
Pete Z Annoying as shit.
They are in original, but they don't move around obviously
Hopefully the body Cloud dumps in the water is Johnny...that would make a great remake...god, I can't stand that goof.
Finally, someone with a brain.
I don’t think you realized a lot of those flashbacks were actually from advent children. Not remade for the game.
The robots that appear in the sunken tunnels (the ones with the robot hands mini game) are the same ones we saw as enemies in FFVII and also similar to the ones used by the main characters in FFVI. I'm talking about the mecha robots you can find all over the area (empty)
Wow remake of a game has most of the same content, much wow, what about the cool little things like hearing Reno behind the church door before opening it, real Easter eggs not obvious call backs
Tifa makes a drink for Cloud called Cosmo Canyon , same name as red 13's home town
I think there is a cocktail with the same name in the original game.
As you may have noticed, Cloud's hair is blonde, which is a direct callback to the original where he has a similar striking hair colour...
That whole Cetra flashback scene just OOZES old school Final Fantasy....and I kinda want a prequel set in that time period now...
Uh We kind of did? FFX series was the prequel Spirans were the Ancients look at how the ancients dress similar to the way people in Spira dress right? you gotta focus on the little details like that and also did you see the picture in Shinra museum? the founders pic you see Shinra from FFX-2 the masked guy
@@vinceunknown1935 This is totally unconfirmed and entirely speculation. They always put nods to their other games in the "new" FF. Example: The laugh in the haunted mansion in FFVII is Kefkas Laugh from FFVI (literally the same sound file, but slowed down). Doesn't mean Kefka was part of that timeline. Im talking about an actual CONFIRMED prequel, because that world looked old school NES/SNES era FF.
In Tifas bar the arcade machine with barret hits 7777. That barrets lucky 7 skill in original where he does 7777 damage
It's also a reference to All Lucky 7's, in which, if a character's current HP reached 7777, they would attack random enemies for 7777 damage 63 times during that battle.
This is a TINY detail which I can't find anywhere else. In Mayor Domino's doorjamb, there are two little figures in the wood grain that are mirror images of each other... I know the whole thing is mirrored. And I know this isn't an Easter egg, but it's a nice little detail.
awesome game I've clocked in over 100 hours already and I'm one dress away from getting the platinum trophy
12:00 all the flashback bits were from Advent Children
In the Spanish version of the game there are a few easter eggs that refer to the original translation of the game (the original PSX game was very poorly translated into Spanish and there are very funny references). For example, when Cloud meets Aerith for the first time, the original phrase Aerith said is "They say you can't grow grass and flowers in midgar. but for some reason, the flowers have no trouble blooming here", so, in Spanish she says a phrase similar to "They say that in Midgar neither grass nor flowers grow, but for some reason, flowers do", a phrase poorly translated and that in Spanish it loses all meaning!
I'm gonna reply to this comment in 2043.
Didn’t Barrett singed the victory song from the old final fantasy 7?
The fact that Shinra has a photo of FFX-2's Shinra, we can assume this wild ride is going off the rails.
Nomura is gonna change everything, get ready for Sora, Noctis, and Chadley to be party members in this version.
It's been confirmed the X world and 7s world are connected for years now
The game is set in Midgar, The name familiar? That’s because it’s actually where the original Final Fantasy 7 was set
2043 for the next installment seems about right.
Please sqaure enix don't make me play the last episode of FF 7 remake when in my 70s
SE alrady stated that they began work on "Episode 2" in 2019. So stop whining.
@@luciferschoice I'm not whining. The joke was just appropriate for the situation. Actually, I think we might get the game at the end of 2021 or first half of 2022.
4:16 I laughed at all of these random stuff and paint cans on the floor XD what a messy house! :P
Reminded me of skyrim when you do shouts indoors
Doesn't want to spoil anything by mentioning Zach. Proceeds to tell us that Sephiroth kills Aerith. I'm sure most of us already know this but if we know about Aeriths's death, we more than likey know about Zach as well...
I dislike just how many callbacks they put in this game. It seems way too many especially for events that havent happened yet in ff7 remake.
Unless you adhere to the time loop theory theb you could make a case for them
Some of these "easter eggs" aren't easter eggs lol.
"Rufus being classic rufus" Yeah he grabs the chopper and rides off but we didn't get a badass evil speech from him.
another nifty little nod to the OG game is during the victory fanfare after winning a fight. Barret and Yuffie(the latter in the interlude content called the Intermission story) will at times sound out the Victory Fanfare song from the OG game.
*spoilers*
Before I played I was set on the game being a 1 for 1 remake. After barrett was killed and brought back by the.... destiny things...I was intrigued by the thought of changes.
