Beckham was deadly on the right

  • Bekham was so dangerous in a wide playmaker role. I believe David Bekham was a misunderstood player. He wasn't a classic winger or a classic midfielder, he was something in between. A player who had an incredible pass, best leveraged on the wing to feed the 2 strikers Sir Alex Ferguson liked to play with. To add to his talent, he also worked hard for the team, helping his full-back by tracking back when necessary.

@@ollieculley671 I mean anyone who’s watched him play in the late 90s and early to mid 2000s knows what kind of a player he REALLY was. I think it’s mostly people from the newer generation who have this misconception by simply looking at those YT compilations where he’s spraying those long balls and crosses elegantly that he was probably some luxury player but that’s far from the reality. He could’ve played as an all action wingback or a tireless box 2 box mid in the modern game based on his work rate.

Beckham was perfect in an era where they still managed to put two upfront strikers. Those crosses were necessary and he keep sending them at his will. Now wingers are more of inside forwards so those classic right midfielders are rare these days. Vincente and Bern Schneider ze roberto also comes to my mind as great RM/LM. There were many tbh it was standard back then.

Yh. You really know football. Back then, wingers were not inverted. They played naturally and that gave them the edge for the crosses. I think Robben (at Bayern), Messi and CR7 (at Madrid) changed the role of wingers in the modern game. Formerly, wingers were not judged by goals but rather assists. Now, it's all about goals.
