Pirlo can't defend

  • This video dismantles the claim that Andrea Pirlo couldn't defend. Perhaps not as physical and rugged as his teammate Gattuso, Pirlo defended in his way by using his brain to position himself well and to read his opponent to cut out the danger. And of course, that's without mentioning that on the ball he is one of the all time greatest midfielders, as shown in the video.

Gattuso did all dirty work in midfield. He was like Dennis Rodman.
Seedorf is a more balanced player. Physically gifted and got a magic technique.
    He was like Scottie Pippen
And Pirlo... I think he is top 3 most talented Italian player. This guys football was unmatchable back then.

you're absolutely right. But still, Pirlo's peculiar way of doing the (little, to be honest) defensive job some of his managers requested him is absolutely crrectly represented by this game. I'm an AC Milan italian supporter, i have seen Pirlo playing his whole career, and to be fair: with years, he kinda focused on the "directing" side of his role, already been his major gift, and ran and defend lesser than ever... the last 3 years with us, and then his time at Juve he kinda neglected pure defending at all. And it was for the best, 'cause he was NOT a defending midfielder. Ok, he could hide the ball and made opponents run in endless circles following him, which is in some way a type of defense (hold the ball, make your teammates breath, avoid being endangered by other team: that is defending at its best!) but he never was our Gattuso. And luckily, 'cause we had .... the man himself, for that job eheheh.

I still think it's insane that people think only 1 CDM is needed to defend, yeah there are some guys who are poor in defense but football is a sports team, as a CDM you need a guy on your right and your left to give you hand otherwise you will get dribbled or have to cover +2 pass options at the same time.

I think it was because his other qualities were so high people didn't really notice how good he was with his tackling, positioning and covering.
But when you had Gattuso hunting down the ball and tackling like his life depended on it and Seedorf who felt like the middle ground between Pirlo and Gattuso getting about - you were left feeling Pirlo didnt really put it about from a defensive pov and that he was primarily on the pitch because of what he could do from an attacking, orchestrating the play pov.
But Pirlo could get stuck in, yes he wasn't quite up to the defensive level of players like Vieira, Keane, Gattuso, Gerrard, Essien, Makelele to name a few, but not as far off as some people thought.
It's in a similar way when people used to just say all Beckham could do was play pretty long balls and score free kicks, people forget how much defensive cover he offered, how much of an exceptional engine he had to go along with his incredible range of passing.

I wouldn't say pirlo can't defend, if you look at his career, every manager always pair pirlo with someone to do the dirty work for him example Gattuso, Ambrosini, De Rossi, Vidal and Marchisio. Glad he didn't sign for Barcelona because that Barca midfield of Buqsuet,Xavi and Iniesta not going to do running work for him unless Mascherano play alongside him at midfield.

I believe somehow, most football fans I talk to, only remember his time with Juventus, at which he was set by Allegri as the director of an orchestra without much defensive work. Had Marchisio, Pogba, and that Chilean whom held the rb or rm position to cover Pirlo's back.

The more I see videos like this the more I lost respect for him when he came to MLS. Yeah yeah yeah, the typical footy fan is going to shit on the league and say it doesn't matter and Pirlo didn't need to put effort blah blah. Whatever man, a professional should always be a professional and Pirlo gave so little effort in MLS it ruined my view of him. Especially because on the same team David Villa played like he had never won anything in his life, ran after everything fought through tackles etc. A real hunger to still be as good as he could be. Disagree all you want, all I'm saying is he dropped down my list pretty far seeing him be so uncaring.
