  • Pennsylvania Railroad K4 #1361 is very well know for having been restored to running condition and pulling excursions in the 1980s, but how long did her excursion career really last? Where did she go? Why was she pulled out of service? What does the future hold for this legend among preserved mainline steam locomotives? I attempt to answer these questions while at the same time representing 1361's retirement and revival in HO scale.
Detailed information about 1361's excursion career is surprisingly hard to find. The timeline of events presented in this video is accurate to the best I have been able to determine based on what few articles there are, photos, videos, and discussions with people in the Pennsylvania steam world. That being said, errors are possible.
The locomotive featured in this video is a Bachmann Spectrum PRR K4 with factory DCC and sound. These models used a very basic Soundtraxx decoder and sound package.

Awesome video! I’m very proud to be a weekly donor for 1361’s restoration! The locomotive’s tender recently received a fresh coat of Dark Green Locomotive Enamel paint about 2 months ago.

Solid video as always - I always manage to learn new things from your vids, I had no idea 1361 kicked the bucket like *that*. My club has a representation of Horseshoe Curve, and due to the era it's set in, it also has a 1361 stuffed and mounted in the middle.

Once she’s restored again, I wonder if she could run at Strasburg? 611 gets to run there, so why not 1361?
Imagine if both of them were there at the same time!

I strongly suspect the opportunity to bring both surviving K4s together is too tempting to pass up. Beyond that I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of the RMM and Strasburg working out the details on how to split ticket revenue and whatnot.

The Railroaders Memorial Museum has great communication and dialogue with multiple short lines and tourist railroads in and outside of Pennsylvania. Western Maryland Scenic Railroad has expressed interest in having 1361 visiting Cumberland, Maryland.

Very nice. Can you also tell the story about T1 5055 and how the men are still working on the engine piece by piece? It may be a longest while before it’s complete.

Yes it is, with just a touch of black paint to make the axles match the driving wheels and the like.

It's a Roundhouse model from about 2008 or so that the railroad sold in what was then their hobby shop. They haven't carried them for years but they crop up now and then on Ebay. They tend to go for between $80 and $120 each now.
