    Finally I understood this song after watching the movie "Brassed Off" (1996). Danny is campaigning -- tub-thumping -- to preserve his brass band of workers facing closure of their coal pit. Many take refuge in whiskey and lager drinks, pissing away their nights while longing for the good and better days. Yet the proud community of next-door neighbors remembers good and better times, vowing to be never kept down again. The workers someday again will be winning ... and singing!

    • @bIametheniIe
      @bIametheniIe 5 лет назад +9

      The song is mocking hooligan type of people and "lifestylists." Lifestylism is an anarcho-babble insult for anarchists that don't pass the anarcho-purity litmus test and don't partake in the class struggle BS. Ironically, the people they were mocking took it up as some sort of anthem. It's one of the few Chumbawamba songs that isn't really political.

    • @chesspunk489

    Look them up, honestly. Listen to their older music if you haven't. They're a fucking anarcho punk band and they made this song pretty much specifically to essentially troll. They've let general motors use the rights to it for like $70k before and then turned around and donated all that money to the people protesting general motors. They're actually extremely fucking dope and I'm sure they got sick of performing this quick.

      The only silly thing I see here is the stupidity of the criticism you have made against this band. I'm going to give you two tips, and I don't care if you take them into account or not. "Hypocrisy is one of the many human attitudes, whether good or bad, and there has never been as much in the past as in the present, a single person who lacks this characteristic." And the second piece of advice is: "never bite the hand that feeds you."

      Better to take it figuratively.
      At night, the time of darkness, we flush out the toxins and are thus ready to get up again.
      The song is about Resurrection and resilience.
      The first two drinks are the water of life and a little water, the third and fourth drinks less positively associated - lager is a word that means "confined in a space", while cider is made from the apples of temptation and original sin.
      The song is also about love transcending sorrow - hence the special references to "Danny Boy" and "Don't cry for me, Argentina" (as modified in a very telling way).

      Catholic Firefighter “so you tell me that you are a socialist, but yet live in a capitalist society?”

      @Catholic Firefighter You do know they weren't on TV for around 11 years prior releasing Tubthumbing. The reason they switch to EMI was because indie labels were still capitalist. At the time music collectives weren't really a big thing I assume, but as of recent I have been seeing more music collectives popping up.

      @Catholic Firefighter If we are talking about music, it isn't necessary to get a company to back you up to find some form of success. People have found success in their own music collectives, collaborating with each other and releasing music. The PC Music collective has found relative success. Dorian Electra has released 2 studio albums with one garnering huge critical praise.
      Collectives outside of music like worker cooperatives give their workers a living wage, the ability to vote, self manage their workplace and give back to the community as a lot of them has some sort of social meaning behind it like planting trees, or feeding the homeless. None of that sounds evil at all.

    Fucking epic slogans. 26 years later and I’m just thinking how epic their statement was that they got to do on American television because they “sold out” was. Just epic!

    Why is this ??? The Tonight Show has been recorded in stereo since the late '70s.
    As hip as Jay Leno is compared to Johnny Carson, I'm sure the late night audience was rather shocked by this great performance 24 years ago...
