Its entirely ridiculous! Darkfall was not on this list but it is no longer even running. Many of these games are shutting down. I never tried DAoC in its prime as I was a UO player. I hope this genre returns in full furry!
Yea, but that's pretty much all popular MMO's now. The MMO scene is dry as hell rn. I can't stand these que up and go "PvP" games. I like building my toon up and working to get my stat's better THEN going to PvP. Now in most game's you can get to the end of the game in 2 days at max and full gear in less then a week or two. Pretty much any old MMO that comes out players already learned to min max it in private servers. So....Also I cant stand Anime or Anime graphics in games so, rules out like 9/10 MMO's coming out these days. :(
I am playing mmorpgs like for 15+ years and BDO has the best open world pvp combat. I am trying to find a game like this because I don't want to play BDO because of item upgrade system RNG is hell. Putting it #7 made me really sad. Probably you never played the game with a guild. Node wars and castle wars are awesome. They are huge, need highly strategic play and so fun. Also fights for grind spots are huge too. One 1v1 fight for a spot can turn into huge guild war. You can fight the members of your enemy guild once your guild marks them as enemies without opening flag.
Open World PvP in MMOs is always tricky. Ashes has potential to find that sweet spot. I highly doubt the Riot MMO will have open world PVP, I'm assuming Riot will prioritize arena or bg style PvP.
DAoC is still the high water mark for this genre. I played on Percival, it was great (fantastic in hindsight, didn't know how good we had it) and I doubt the community we had in DAoC will ever exist again, just was the right time for true realm pride felt by most who played.
EverQuest was one of the best open world PvP games ever sadly there is hardly any population on the PvP server these days but back when they had 4 PvP servers all with there own PvP ruleset my favorite being Rallos Zek, where starting at leve 6 you could attack 4 lvls higher or 4 lvls lower so a lvl 15 could fight any one 11 - 19 and loot 1 tradable item and all of there coin from there corpse if you got the killing blow on them it was so fun at all levels pretty much once you hit level 11 - end game there was always PvP every zone besides a handful of safe zones I mean less than 6 common areas safe and rest of game was full PvP so any dispute over a camp or a mob could and would be settled with PvP finest 8 years of my gaming life
I'll add in Shadowbane, which you probably never played. Fraught with problems for over a year (and many exploits its entire life), but wow, was it ahead of its time (could build your keeps anywhere, sieges, class runes to fight over and many interesting classes, even flying combat (though very limited flying, basically walking in the air, haha, but it worked and it was strategic!)). (came out around or just after ToA in DAoC).
I never had a chance to play Shadowbane but always here good things. This list is only games you can still play. Shadowbane does have a private server but I don't think it works as well as the Warhammer private server
@@RyveGenesis Oh yeah, was just a mention since it had ground-breaking design, some of which has yet to be tried again, which I find really surprising. Some MMOs have come close but there it was, 2003, build your keep (which had it all, crafting stations, walls, etc.) anywhere. People created 4-5 wall deep keeps sometimes. Of course, the backstabbing in that MMO is legendary, but that was the type of brutal PvP/siege game it was. Anyway, just surprised no MMO has had that level of building (starting to get this the past few years and it is coming, but man, 20 years later! haha)
I wish there were more options for first person MMOs. Its why I play Mortal Online 2. The game needs about 2 years until its ready though. Still fun in the meantime with a guild.
This is a really good list. I wish there was a hardcore pve mmo that had world pvp. I dont want to have to resort to playing wow for a polished world pvp game.

PLEAS TAKE BDO off this list. Open world in BDO is absolutely dead. The Devs do everything to remove pvp. At this point the can just delet the flag system

ty for the vids, appreciating as a pvp player myself too. I think one of the problem of the genre, is that players are too much following the hype. If we all like pvp mmos than we should just play them, what i mean is high population oftenly overated, do you need 500+ players online to enjoy a deep GvG or RvR fight ? I played RoR when it went out, we were so few than we couldnt even do bgs, but it enjoyed it. What is killing mmos and especially PvP ones imo is the "server/game is dead" meme I can think of a solution which is back to monthly sub after like a few weeks/month trial, so we getting our game&community healthy

I still think it looks a lot like Guild Wars 2 combat to me. TAB lock on but a lot of free movement while casting. But we still haven't seen enough to say for sure. Thanks for the comment!
Warhammer online was so much fun its just sad how its developers had no ability to do anything with it really and the server were maybe the worst i have ever seen in any mmo. Eso could be fun but i absolutely hate the combat and its class system is just so boring. I did like the cyrodiil for awhile but to me the map was just way too big and felt more like riding simulator or sneaking simulator without mount than actual fun pvp. GW2 i actually love its wvw only problem i really have with it is the boon ball gameplay its both unfun to play in and unfun to play against and also i really dislike how easy it is to conquer stuff and how useless defending keeps/castles and towers is. All in all i really wish we would get more mmos with large scale pvp stuff because its just sad how few games actually has stuff like ESO's cyrodiil GW2 wvw or Warhammer Onlines crazy fun open world large scale pvp. Hell if there was ever a Mount & Blade open world mmo i would never look back.
And yes, ArcheAge could have been much much better, such a shame. And yes, if MO2 worked better... also agree that GW2 WvW just didn't have 'it', ESO cryodiil was much better setup and feel (though ESO has many combat mechanics 'features' that drive away new players, dooming it to a small pop). AO has a great setup/design but I agree on top-down, just not for me (also combat felt simplistic, fun but simplistic). WAR was great, leveling solely via PvP, great classes, varied, so many great fights and so many instanced warfronts (need a NA server!).

Open world PvP just aint fun if I can't loot my enemies. Doesn't have to be their full kit but something has to drop as a reward for killing somebody. Has to be somewhat restricted however so Uber players don't gank newbs for their stuff. I think Albion has a nice system so I heard atleast. Never played it myself tho.

Here is the problem with Ascension. Because it is classless, and pretty much free pick, makes it impossible to have any idea of the kind of enemy you are going to encounter. Second. Ascensions own legendary enchantment is what makes a sort of class/build, but a few of the builds always turn out to be much more powerful to the rests, thus making them a must have for dedicated pvpers. Third there are some hidden abilities that you can only get if you have a particular enchantment or ability that will grant it, thus hidden to the unexperienced and some of these are powerful CC or damage or damage increasing items, that only the very experienced know how to get. This makes it so that new players have a huge learning curve in order to be competent, because these powerful players can destroy you in seconds and within a CC chain, thus you really not having a hope in hell.
Albions pvp system is not better than even GW2 there are no knockback mechanics making it possible for the larger guilds to simply literally gatekeep maps that only have one exit per side, each map is the size of UOs city of moonglow tiny and the core objectives of each map you just have a ghost spy the area and kill players entering for free stuff, Albion is lame.
Why do ppl enjoy realm vs realm?? it's a clusterf. Pvp should be judged based on how it feels to 1v1 and if there's any reward system in place. Especially in an mmo.
Asheron's Call is great, but I have kept this list to playable MMOs only. Which Technically I guess you still can on AC private server which I did not know existed until I googled it just now. So it could have made the list if I knew that.

I had my heart set on ashes of creation untill the whole “no parse or DPS meters because they are toxic “ debacle on there boards happened its bullshit. I now have no hope for ashes , they care more about making a safe space for cry babies that want to get a free carry than making the best game possible. “ I suck at the game and the parser shows every one the truth and instead of using that information to make my self better, I just cry on forums that I can’t get groups because DPS meters are toxic and good players don’t want to let me join them not because my shit playing brings every one else down but because they are toxic bullies. They should have to drag me along and make up for my bad playing or fail trying so I can get the reward also “ AoC mods response yea DPS meters are toxic let’s get rid of all parsing in our game so every one will be invited and no one will know if they are bad or good and then they will just have to guess who is holding them back randomly that’s a good idea !! Imagine how those same mods will handle PvP I’m not holding my breath
I don't mind DPS meters in game. It has gotten a little extreme in Retail WOW with the API and RaidLog websites. If you don't pay an ultra optimized Meta build you get denied from groups. Even if the DPS difference with optimal play is 2%. That is too far to me. Outside of that, I do prefer to have damage meters. Just maybe not the Open API that allows intense levels of data collection and ultra min/maxing But yeah, the PVP is going to be more toxic than any meter 😂
@@Schniblogg I think there is a great chance of a great instanced/arena PVP system. World PVP maybe is specific areas and optional only is my guess, since they want mass appeal.
BDO has a crap combat system what are you even talking about. The server lag makes it impossible to fight without desync, gear is more imprtant than skill and FPS = DMG. The game is horrible.
I would add Mortal Online 2 to that list but it's just a pile of shit zerg fest with less and less options to PvP / Gank because of bullshit Guard Mechanics.
Open world PvP is the trashiest of trash PvP systems. A few games should have it to cater to the few that enjoy it and that's it, which seems to be the case right now with Albion online.
Im desperately in need of an open world PVP MMO game! Original WoW and Conan Exiles open world PvP have been some of the best times in gaming for me.

BDO has a crap combat system what are you even talking about. The server lag makes it impossible to fight without desync, gear is more imprtant than skill and FPS = DMG. The game is horrible.

I would add Mortal Online 2 to that list but it's just a pile of shit zerg fest with less and less options to PvP / Gank because of bullshit Guard Mechanics.

Open world PvP is the trashiest of trash PvP systems.
A few games should have it to cater to the few that enjoy it and that's it, which seems to be the case right now with Albion online.
It's definitely not a highly desired thing in MMOs other than the weirdos like me lol

albion is for me the best of all mmos due to the different zones of pvp.. the game made a lot right imo
