FOLIC ACID is the synthetic form that is in supplements & fortified in foods. It also happens Bcuz of anti-seizure medicines (such as valproic) & having diabetes that's not well controlled before becoming pregnant. Obesity at the time of pregnancy is also associated w/an increased risk. My grandmother also had a baby born w/Spina Bifida & he was born sometime before The Great Depression. Our mom was the baby of 12 children my Grammy had & mom was born in 1932 & The Great Depression happened in 1929. I don't recall what yr my Grammy's baby boy was born. How is Ur cousin doing today.?
