That hurt my ears NEARLY as much as the 12c Lambo engine. But at least I laughed. So that engine was the most incredible shriek ever in F1 and if you ever have a chance to hear it on a straight take it!
Americans literally saved England and all of Europe countless times, not to mention brought all major human innovations, so maybe Americans get to decide how these words are pronounced.
Fun fact, Martin Whitmarsh, who later became McLaren's race division manager, revealed that the test car was purposely 'slowed down' as they already had a contract with Peugeot at that point. The car wasn't supposed to go faster than a certain amount of speed. Whitmarsh made Dave Ryan, the team manager at the time, fill up the car with nearly 100 kilos of fuel, and despite that Senna was able to recognize how fast the car was. So obviously, a huge missed opportunity from McLaren if you ask me. Then again, they were highly skeptical about Lamborghini's claims regarding the engine, and they probably did not see that coming as the Larousse machinery was painfully slow on track.
@MPG They already had a deal with Peugeot as @Flatsixturbo says. He is also right about the purposely slowing down, I heard that story in a podcast a while back. The car was so quick it would or wouldn't have triggered a clause in a contract of some description, I can't remember exactly what the story was, so they slowed the Lambo engined car down on purpose. Bit silly of them TBH but I'm sure there was a commercial reason of some king, that said the Lamborghini engine was terribly unreliable so would likely have been just as bad as the Peugeot and their 94 car was a dog anyway so I doubt it would have made much difference. V12 engines also used a lot more fuel, it had to be more powerful than the rest to make up for carrying more fuel, this is the problem Ferrari had with their V12 and the reason for their eventual switch to a V10 which was the perfect compromise between outright power of a V12 and the fuel efficiency / driveability of a V8.

I'd say it is a little far fetched. Power perhaps, but weight, fuel consumption, reliability, useability all play a big role and I think Renault was simply ahead of big heavy V12's in these areas..
yes, its not said Lamborghini would have succeeded. after all, Ferrari with his V12 never reached the horse power of Renault V10 and they decided to switch to a V10 for the 96 season. so its not so simple. weight and fuel consumption was a factor so as lenght. and not to forget: McLaren in 93 had not only a power problem, they had also an aerodynamic issue in relation to Benettons performance. so Sennas decision to leave the team was right.

The point is Lamborghini missed to show a good product when they were around so no front grid team showed any interest in a tractor manufacturer. Sorry to say but... I did my own research on the once called "Team Lambo" and it's obscure origins which was nothing Lambo, the co., ever wanted (Iacocca had his own ideas). Hence why the original Lambo F1 was called Team Modena not Team Lambo. A Mexican investor convinced them by promising to finance the whole development of a Lambo F1 and calling it the Team GLAS. Of course he never came through but instead ended up in the list of INTERPOL's most wanted for drug trafficking. A scandal that few know/remember for the embarrassment of: Lambo, Iacocca, Bernie, F1, etc. So, Lambo (better said Lee Iacocca) was left with a huge problem: justify the expense of developing a F1 project that wasn't going to run. See, they had started to develop the car before acquiring the funds... In order to justify the expense and to "save face" Lambo continued the effort as if they were truly interested, but also due to Fogheri's efforts. The engine proved way too unreliable, Lambo didn't have the knowledge or infrastructure to compete with or to improve the car. Lambo back then was still a small workshop were things were mostly handmade (Selling 150-200 cars per year): ZERO racing experience. So it went on for some years, they dropped the chassis and focused, thereby registering a horrid F1 record... Then McLaren came around DESPERATELY looking for a new engine, Lutz convinced Dennis to give it a shot... Car was tested, Senna and Mika loved it. BUT the unreliability was there, Lambo never solved that. *In any case this would have NEVER happened for these reasons:* *1. Iacocca, the only one in Chrysler interested in Lambo left the co. in disarray.* Bob Lutz who disliked Iacocca got rid of Lambo to raise the needed cash. The only reason Chrysler had acquired Lambo in the first place was to obtain Sportscar engineering knowhow for cheap, to help in developing the Viper... The goal had already been achieved *2. Dennis was well aware of the reliability risk PLUS yes, he got a better deal from Peugeot.* *3. Suharto Jr, who bought Lambo in 1994 only destroyed Lambo further.* *Would a fast but unreliable engine that only finished Less than Half the races it ever participated in, be unbeatable? The best place that engine ever achieved was 3rd. (by luck) in 5 seasons...* "To win, first you gotta end the race..."
It would have been faster over 1 lap but the engine was extremely unreliable. It had been referred to as a hand grenade before. 0% chance this thing would have come close to winning a championship

Renault...
*In any case this would have NEVER happened for these reasons:*
*1. The goal had already been achieved
*2. Dennis was well aware of the reliability risk PLUS yes, he got a better deal from Peugeot.*
*3. Suharto Jr, who bought Lambo in 1994 only destroyed Lambo further.*
*Would a fast but unreliable engine that only finished Less than Half the races it ever participated in, be unbeatable? The best place that engine ever achieved was 3rd. (by luck) in 5 seasons...*
"To win, first you gotta end the race..."
And I stopped the second the word Reno appeared, if you cant be arsed to spell Renault correctly then you aren't worth my time
Micha Hakkonen
It would have been faster over 1 lap but the engine was extremely unreliable. It had been referred to as a hand grenade before. 0% chance this thing would have come close to winning a championship
I thought the "hand grenade" nickname was given to the puegot v10?
