Such a gorgeous car. Those west mclaren cars from 1997 to 2005 all looked fantastic. In fact every car on the grid looked good. Just peak F1

That era of F1 cars was just so much more aesthetic than current ones. It was the perfect bridge between the more boxy 80's designs and the super complex looking >2010 ones.
I agree. Though complexity didn’t wait for the 2010’s to arrive, the 2008 McLaren was wild !
I did find the aero-appendage era in the 00s pretty ugly. Mclaren were one of the worst offenders. Every race it would seem like the cars would grow more and more sticky out bits, like if you leave a potato for too long in the fridge and it starts to produce sprouts. But then at least most of the cars had low noses which were more attractive than the high nose era in the 10s.

Always thought he retired way too early. He was still at the top of his game. He was one of my favorite F1 drivers.

In terms of pace they were very competitive. Just had a tendency to explode for any reason.
It would be nice to see him participate a friday practise session or something. That would be a crazy record for him - after 22 years, come back to official F1 event

When F1 was real F1. So glad I grew in the 90's watching with my dad each the grand prix on tv when they happened. Kids these day will never know the screaming chant of V10, the battles between Shumacher, Hill, Verstappen (sr), Frentzen, Fisichella, Vileneuve, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Irvine, and so many other pilots.
Yes, we had some good decades with these V12/V10s but also we had entire seasons full of VERY boring motorsport, especially in the Ferrari/Schumacher Era. At this time an overpaced (single) driver in the front field was the highlight of a complete grand prix.
Many European F1-Fans might not notice that but I do cause I'm also watching Indycar & FIA World Sportscar Championship since the late 80s.
@@schumiisking Of course, the level of competition on track was FAR higher! I never would deny that in case of the pilots required technical/skillset. But the experience on fan & spectator side was often more boring because the f1 cars (+ most of the tracks) where simply not designed for in field position fights, overpacing, aso. That's totally different today. You can overpace wherever you want, you have more tactical&maneuver options due to drs for example plus (very important) you can do risky maneuvers on a regulary base (often) without consequences because todays run-of-areas are not made of shifting sands anymore. Simply we have more action today (but increasingly embarrassing sound).

This is the car that held the record for 23 years.
Incorrect, while the record was set in 1999 by Heidfeld, he used the previous years car, 1998 MP4/13

Nice. Mika was top driver. As far as cars are inlcuded I ilke the most Kimi's Mclaren MP4-20 2005. Also my favorite driver was Kimi.
While there’s no denying the V6 hybrid turbo cars of any era with its advanced aerodynamics and far more powerfully advanced engines but there’s something genuinely sexy about these late 90s/mid 2000s V10 era f1 cars. The complex yet simple aesthetics,the loud deafening engine sounds which is part of the charm,how incredibly agile and nimble when they’re on the corners. I do think every era of f1 cars have its own charm and quirks but these cars just have something in them that’s special

Mika and Michael had some intense battles back in the day. That's what I miss in F1.
Even though Verstappen and Hamilton are in much quicker cars, I still love the older cars and drivers.

Mika is a great guy, met him at the 1st Indy GP and he was very cordial signing my MB book.
What an iconic car and iconic time for F1. Fast forward now and the races are a snoozefest where one team just dominates and DRS ruins the whole race experience

Great driver, perfect battle between he and MSC with a huge respect. V10, box with fuel, no DRS, no electronics... Missing that golden F1 era.
Terrific stuff. F1 cars really are a lot like thoroughbred racehorses: incredibly quick, cripplingly costly to own and run, highly strung, temperamental, and just when you think you've got them under control they turn around and kick your head off. Bloody marvellous!😁
2014 died the real f1 sound and also the whole f1 for me personally. 90s and til mid 2000s were the best to watch f1.
Agreed although these days its nice to see how close teams behind the ones who are domination are to eachother. But I also feel everything else about F1 felt and looked better during the years you mentioned. I really miss that era

@@inerttech2570 the last race of 1999 season was Japanese GP. the layout sticker is put in the side of the cockpit for the driver to see and remember the corners.

I dont think he is talking about the actual power of the cars. I think he meant that even when car is going slowly it feels more powerfull than the modern ones.
