probably the highest quality restored historic racing footage period.
Watch the movie 'Grand Prix' from 1966, there is remastered version of it and also uses historical racing footage. :)
Yes, amazing! BTW, if you look at the results. ONLY 3 cars finished with 100 laps in time (Phil Hill which is shown having the spin finished 2nd). 2 more cars had +1 and +7 laps. ALL OTHER cars had technical or other problems and DID NOT FINISH.
@@ClaSpecialized Maybe making cars less reliable is the secret to having overtakes at Monaco again?
Not at all. Search for 1962 Monaco and you will find the original footage before this version - original is far better as it is more clear, without the soft and smeary look that the HD upscaling gives this.
@@ColinCarFan where is your link?
The quality of the video left me speechless. Unbelievable
It's called "film". In the age of 2K movies that are upscaled to 4k real film might be a forgotten medium.
Being able to see the past this clearly is just mind blowing. I’m only 30 but this video got to me in a very nostalgic way.
This is amazing, unbelievable, like I've traveled through time!!! I just saw Bruce Mclaren, Jim Clark, John Surtees in his Lola, Bonnier, Phill Hill, Graham Hill and his BRM...up close, like I'm really there! Something good and beautiful from scary new technology, I just saw every bolt on Dan Gurney's Porsche, Ferrari sharknose in front of me!? I just walked through the pits of Monaco, watched the race up close as a spectator and a passenger in a car filming 1962 f1 cars during training. This is simply a mind blowing thing! I have never seen anything like this... Thank you sir; )
I agree, this was amazing to watch.
But, I don't think I got as much out of it as you did 😁
Thank to the great 70mm Photographie in 1962!
This is the Monaco and the Grand Prix, I experienced as a child, a world long gone. Nowadays Monaco is a ridiculous tiny Hong-Kong. This is a dream video.
What makes you compare Monco and Hong Kong? I'm genuinely curious.
@@racecardriverrr4201 high-rise building packed very close to each others. Monaco once had a village flair which is completely gone apart from the Rocher.
@@olivierriviere7527 I get what you mean. Though as someone who's lived in Hong Kong (but not in Monaco) it looks like Monaco still has a huge amount of flashy wealth; yachts and endless supercars. A flashy place, more of a party destination than cultural place to live.
Whereas, Hong Kong has luxery on a much smaller scale compared to the larger size of the city as a whole. Much more historical culture and food to explore, and gritty areas make it feel more down to Earth.
Sorry to type out an entire paragraph, I just don't see much of a connection between them! I appreciate your well mannered response.
Yeah I get what you're saying... I really hate that new harbor hotel after the tunnel it steals the image of cars going down to the nouvelle chicane
Same here. I was in Morocco in the mid 60's as a boy up to 1970 and the scenery brings back memories of those days. Of course all of that is long gone now and looks nothing like it did then. You can recognize bits and pieces here and there but it will never have that sense of serenity that you see here.
The image is so incredibly sharp, it makes it possible to imagine walking there, absolutely incredible
Search for 1962 Monaco and you will find the original footage before this version - original is far better as it is more clear, without the soft and smeary look that the HD upscaling gives this.
WTF ? How it is possible ??? It really looks like 4K in 1962 ! 😀 Bravo!
upscaling
It was originally 70mm. If you actually ran the 70mm print through a projector in a theater it would be better than 4k.
Old stuff was filmed… not compressed onto a storage memory card
Film holds up extremely well.
35mm film preserved has a higher resolution than 4k video.
Quite simply, the best F1 video I have ever seen. The cinematography is beautiful.
And the image is sharp clean!
Search for 1962 Monaco and you will find the original footage which is far better as it is more clear, without the soft and smeary look that the HD upscaling gives this.
Monte Carlo, looking so much better than it looks today, the price of progress is to greater cost.
I think you mean “too great a cost.”
Check out pictures of Monte Carlo circa 1900 and see what 60 years of progress did. We don’t get to pick and choose when to throw the brakes on progress.
I can see why this was such an amazing race back in the day. This also makes it painfully clear that modern F1 has outgrown it.
Monaco will always be the crown jewel of F1. F1 cars are just too stupidly big.
I strongly disagree
Modern? F1 has outgrown it since 40 years ago
I hear people saying the same thing for at least the past 37 years.
@@fasthracing You prefer the boring train we have nowadays?
The sound it's not 100% accurate, but the restoration is magnificent!!
Well done and thank you very much!
This i an absolutely phenomenal piece of footage, what a joy to be able to see the monaco grand prix in it's golden age !
Its not in another time, but another planet. Beautifull movie.
Greetings from 🇧🇷
Vídeo realmente espetacular 👏
Absolutely remarkable. If you saw this year's Monaco race you know how jammed with boats and yachts the marina was. Here there are only a handful of boats. Things have really changed over 62 years. The cars, the course, the huge number of people who almost overwhelm the principality. Monaco is still an amazing place. Love this video.
The movie "Grand Prix" is when I got hooked on F1. My parents took me to see it when theatres had huge screens & massive seating. If you watch the movie some of the helicopter footage of the race mistakenly included all of the productions spare cars used in the movie parked on a hilltop!
Anyway this is what this wonderful youtube reminded me of!
5:30 can only imagine being able to photograph the cars this close up without the barriers, such a mythical time of F1.
They are still doing it after the tunnel
70mm film is an amazing format (think of „Oppenheimer“) and this is the best example. This footage is simply marvelous!
What does the mm refer to?
@@ntl9974 Millimeter
@@ntl9974 American spotted? It's 2.76 inches btw
@@Kaizzer refer to, not what is it
@@ntl9974 It's the width of the photographic film. The bigger the film, the better the image quality.
Wow ! I can honestly say I've seen well over a thousand Formula 1 movies and videos. There is so much in this vid that I have NEVER seen before. Princess Grace and Bruce McLaren. Can't get any better than that.
The part at 6:17 is my favorite in this video, the camera and the sense of speed with the car behind is just incredible!
The end shots done by helicopter, slowly following the track, as practice goes on, are incredible. The simple piano playing is such a wonderful accent to the footage. Like a trip back in time, so long ago. Very nice video.
Brilliant.. the clarity is mind boggling.. you feel right in it.. a time capsule.. keep up the great work.
I had never seen that image of the heliport pad above the Monaco tunnel. It was much prettier than now.
F1 in Monaco is remarkable, but what is even more remarkable is the sheer tech and work gone into making this incredible video!
its 70mm film bro
The commentator for most of this is Burl Ives, with that great great deep voice. Wonderful footage and restoration, thank you.
WOW, it looks better than pictures from today. 🤯
That’s because digital video has yet to surpass the visual fidelity of film.
@@MaoistBanker It has done that long ago, you just need a good camera like in the analogue days
@Sithhy Top of the line film cameras are just scratching 8k. Avatar 2 was known for being one of the best digital shoots and used a 6k sensor at best.
Normal 70mm (like this film) is about 12k, with true IMAX 70mm format being about 16k. Digital still has a way to go, but it won't be long.
I love Moss when he said racing wasn't dangerous as no one was shooting at you! It seems the spectators felt the same way.
Wow the quality is insane! Also, the security was non existent.... a wooden fence between the track and spectators at the casino OMG. and trees standing on the track (sidewalk)... insane...
What to think of racing along the water without anything meaningful in between. We all know that didn't end well..
@@alfanovanta Yes indeed. Does anyone know the name of that bi sailing ship in the harbor?
Not a single smart phone in sight. Beautiful.
Only the one youre looking at...
Not a single fat person
final minutes of the video feel like it was recorded last week with a drone, great footage
Does everyone notice the sharp square curbs and the hip-height walls on the curves? This 1960's track is vastly more serious than what F1 drivers have today. The driver commitment back then was much greater than what today's drivers need to muster. No comparison.
In addition the safety of the car! The skill and fortituide!
This quality is incredible.
Unique track, beautiful cars, stunning...stunning Grace, and the end of the video, literally a time machine.
Seeing classic cars when they were new is priceless, Thx Rocco
What an excellent presentation of F1 from the early Sixties, what clearness of the pictures , congratulations !
This reminds me of a quote, I think it was Stirling Moss who once said, "In my day the tires were skinny, and the drivers were fat". This footage is absolutely incredible if its original. I hope to go someday. Thank you.
So cool to see how they were really racing on the streets of Monaco and not on a racetrack laid on top of them.
SUBSCRIBED on the strength of this video. The cars look incredible, there is something to say about their simple livries. If I had a time machine , 50's and 60's F1 races would be a priority. Stunning. I don't know why this has just been suggested in my feed now. It has been live for a year. Thank you for doing the work to bring this to life.
This is one of the best old videos I've ever seen.
"Graham Hill in his Ferrari..." 🙂
Yeah, that never happened!!
@@turboslag It did, but not in Formula one.
Well...close enough...
Wrong Hill, Phil was in the Ferrari, not Graham... The video is amazing, it's like it was filmed last week. Well done!!
Graham won the 1962 championship in a BRM.
Possibly one of the few must-see videos, regardless of interest.
Just Beautiful. Thanks for posting this gem.
What a great film! Beautifully restored!
Thanks for sharing, the quality is amazing! Nice to see those cars, drivers, Chiron, the “old” chicane looks scary with this quick space to go through even if the car might not be so quick, it is quite courageous when you see the lack of safety, kerbs, poles, seafront. Cars were so beautiful and… tiny
That blew my mind. Made me nostalgic for a time before I was born.
Ammazza che qualità questo filmato è impressionante ha una pulizia da paura 😍
What a beautiful view of the past. It is amazing how much this event has changed over the years.
I noticed how the yachts in the harbor were smaller and so few compared to today.
What a great piece of documentary. 😍I know the commentary is wrong a couple of times and all the experts showing off their expertise here - but hey...I'd rather have such a great film and see myself who's in the picture, than having none of that.
Fantastic video. Thanks for posting. I really miss the racing of this era and the openness of the track and surroundings. Guess that’s why I still enjoy Vintage racing and the accessibility to the cars and drivers. Current F1 is a dismal experience.
Didn't even watch the 2024 GP and those lumbering oversized cars. Completely lost interest since 2014 when we changed to hybrid engines ?
Although current F1 can occasionally be exciting, I completely agree with being able to enjoy classic and vintage racing far more. The wide variety of cars involved, the camraderie between drivers (usually), and the access to pits/crews/drivers makes it a far more enjoyable experience.
At what cost? The death toll was terrible, many of the drivers in this videos died on a race track. This was wonderful racing in wonderful machines, but we can’t go back. Such is life.
This is stunning. Shocking really, it looks even better than current video quality.
Mind-blowing. I get confused watching this. Observing 60 years old history in today's quality. Absolute incredible what's possible nowadays! And the raw material... onboard, helicopter flights. I'm flashed! ⚡⚡⚡
Avevo 13 anni
So fantastic that this footage was found and restored and presented. This is just wonderful. Kudos to everybody involved in the project!
Man, how times have changed! This was great! Also, I love the narration from a snowman!
Devo vederlo almeno una volta al giorno.😍
Qué gran documento histórico del Grand Prix de Mónaco,
Una restauración hermosísima...
La classe! 😍
oh my goodness, i was born 1962 but i´ve never seen such fantastic pictures...sorry for my broken english..
Congrats for this amazing remastering work !
Utterly incredible piece of film. Thank you so much for sharing this
This is the coolest thing I've ever seen.
Magnifique !!
Cerise sur le gâteau : je distingue très bien l'immeuble de mes beaux-parents 😄
And to think it looked like this during my life. It's indescribably divine! What prestige there once was versus today! Most excellent and remarkable video and audio! My hat tips graciously to the team responsible for this restoration.
This movie got me into Formula I when I first saw it (1964 I guess) until today... Must have watched the full movie 7 or 8 times, which was quite painful only waiting for these 10 minutes towards the end! I missed the original '60s soundtrack, much happier music than this one, in my opinion much more suited to the actual cars pace along the seafront...Beautiful!
Do you remember the name of the film? Is it "Mediterranean Holiday"?
@@k24hybrid Right title is "Flying Clipper - Traumreise unter weissen segelln", in short "Flying Clipper". Don't know where Mediterranean holiday came from.
@@rafaelblascodelrio203 heheh nice! Thanks for the reply! 👍👍
The best Monaco GP video i've ever seen
One of the most beautiful films I’ve ever seen. Bravo 👏
That "drone shot" unreal.
That would have been helicopter in those days
I thought that. You can tell the difference as the image leans slightly as the helicopter banks.
The drone footage at the end almost made me cry. Beautiful video. Thank you!
The footage from the safety car was amazing too 😜
Wow! What a brilliant picture! It seems like we can change any old material I to full HD with real colours. I am looking forward to more of that!
This is beautiful, man. Simply beautiful.
Incredible footage! Congratulations to whoever put this together! Truly fantastical! Crisp and clear! Wow!
Fantastic!!!!!! Incredible footage. I never realised how steep that climb is until now
Yeah this is wonderful. It's like a time machine.
Splendide immagini. Ottimo restauro!
Grazie Andrea 👍
Wow. Just amazing that we get to relive a little bit of this! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for this video. The quality is simply breathtaking.
These cars were death traps, no doubt, but how amazingly beautiful they were!!
And I'm always astonished to see how nobody seemed to care for safety back then. Just look at 4:08 where Prince Rainier and Princess Grace are sitting. Not to mention all the people just standing trackside. Insane!
Stunning upload…👌
Anyone with any appreciation of how F1 has evolved will appreciate this footage.
Porsche was quite prominent in this. Not only did you see the #4 Porsche 804 of Dan Gurney and the #2 Porsche 718 of Jo Bonnier, but the Prince Rainier and Princess Grace drove around the track in what looks like a 356B T6 Super Cabriolet. Fantastic!!!
che immagini, grazie di averle pubblicate!!
Ma quanto era bella la riviera a quei tempi?
Es alucinante. Es como poder estar ahí en ese momento. Gracias por tan buen trabajo. Saludos desde Uruguay
Magnificent... Wow.. I can watch again again and again
Amazing footage! As if it is taking place right now!
...Or someone is a time traveler and got this with a 4k camera 😉
This is amazing! Please more of those restored footages; it's much more "closer" to today, in black-and-white with low quality it always seems so far away and abstract; thank you so much for this video!
Beautiful production. Did anyone notice the track did not go around the swimming pool?
This might be the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
Fabulous work, thanks for sharing 👏👏👏
Absolutely incredible!!! Thank you!
This is probably the best thing I've ever seen.
What a fantastic film, I would have been only a few months old.
Thanks for posting. This layout is better than the current one. No chicane around the pool (progress can't be stopped) Better chicane after the tunnel. Station Hairpin! Those cars fit the track much better. At least it lives on in film.
Beautiful footage
That drone In the end has me thinking! Seriously, awesome work thanks for sharing 🏁
Not a drone, helicopter shot. Great flying too.
@@CDNChaoZ I would have never guessed!
@@CDNChaoZand DRS was totally on another level!
@@CDNChaoZ
A Drone is actually a Quadrocopter. So somehow also a Helicopter.
I was more thinking a flying car running on flubber, but a helicopter seems more likely.
Well this one should blow up, awesome job with the transfer. Just brought home to me what tiny go-karts the old cars were.
Monaco racing in the early 60’s is the best! Small cars of 1.5 liters, beautiful single colors with large black numbers on a white round background. No sponsor names, but a little later the drivers names in black and white. Increasing engine sizes, larger tires, sponsors names and colors, wings and aerodynamics, turbos have made Monaco worthless. Example? 2024’s race (more of a parade).
Racing was definitely more pure back then.
2:53 The man that Gave The Bugatti Chiron its name.
It's like back to the past with the high quality camera. ❤
absolutely an amazing piece... specially the supplement ending. thank you so much for sharing.
素晴らしい映像✨
Simply stupendous. So evocative. Wow !!! Thank you for making this.
Amazing, more real than real...I wonder what it feels like driving at such speed alongside the sea without any barrier. Wow, the sound of screeching tyres!
Such a masterpiece! Beautiful
The Academy Awards winner in the 1958 Hollywood production: "The Big Country" - Burl Ives [1909 - 1995] who won as "Best Supporting Actor"... narrated this Monaco F-1 early 1960's race.
The 4K reproduction is fabulous!
And, like I've said several times in old racing films I've seen via RUclips: The racing styles, car designs and drivers from the 60's and earlier decades, was never to be seen again in the past four to five decades due to the innovative technology that came about since then. It's a shame. There were a lot of famous names in Formula One racing way back when.
Man...thank you. 🫠
