I shows the conversion process for how to add the NZ channels to a Cobra 29Ltd Classic CB Radio, which was purchased from the USA on eBay, this gives the radio both the NZ and FCC AU CB band (26MHz and 27MHz).

I’ve got a Cobra 146GTL that I expanded and tweaked back in the mid 80’s, with 120 channels and 118 unique frequencies , plus SSB.
It STILL works like a champ!
Quality solder makes the world of difference. That and a steady pair of hands.
I know this is an old video but need to ask a question. If this is a programmable oscillator have you tried it in a 148 ssb radio and will the radio tune on the ssb upper and lower. Will it have enough swing meaning if voicelock is open to tune ssb
So by installing this mod. I could achieve 27.485 mhz?
Love your videos brother, I inherited one of these. Need priority frequencies so I can tune it, any way you can help me? 🙁 Thank you my friend.
Also I have some 1980s NZ 26mhz am 9ch Tait Cb4 car sized transceivers and some standard Australian 27mhz am/ssb units and an original still in its box large 3ch 26mhz 'Great GT 210' walky Talky that has a 3ft extendable aerial with an 'Extender' coil 1/2 way along it in new condition. :-)
(Update), I can swap all of these transceivers for a modified 26/27mhz ssb if anyone is keen? These are standard and in original working condition. Can throw in a couple of cb car aerials too. I used to do cbing over 40yrs ago in Hastings NZ as a hobby.
What is the frequency range after this mod? I know normal CB is channel 1 26.965 MHz & channel 40 is 27.405 MHz. What Channel kit is this you used?
i want one of the kits for my cobra 29
2010 china started going south with these radios around then.I think there Philippians parts supply had run out.
Good job mate great video!
That newer varriants is what I call the tiny resistor 29. Uniden changed to the smaller size resistors not to long before they broke ties with Cobra and Cobra started to get their junk boards made by Giant Electronics. This version is still better than the current trash Cobra is making but definitely not the quality of earlier versions. It's a real shame they no longer make good radios. :-(
Yep, the cap is the standard splatter (swing) mod where all the new found power ends up on adjacent channels and in harmonics. When will people learn.
Like the new little OCXO board. Nice easy way for you to do the conversion.
Mike, you can make a cobra or uniden clean with the cap resistor mod you just have to back the AMC way down and if its still on the dirty side you can add some resistance to the pot..i get great results with the Darlington variable power mod on these chassis..unless you have a better way to lower the carrier to 1-2 watts for amp driving without detuning L14 as we all know doing that cuts back on the forward power.
Mike is dead on. Never knew Giant Electronics make Cobras current line of trash. My habit is whenever I open up a C29 is to look for the "Uniden" mark stamped on the transformer.
Sorry if it's just me, but could you add some info around what was on the 'conversion board' you added, and why/how that works? It looks like a crystal, are you adding that to the mixing circuit?
Hi, It is a custom made crystal oscillator module, on my own PCB.
Where did you buy from price and will it work on the US versions how many channels total
Can I buy a couple from you.
Please explain what the NZ channel mod does.
It changes it’s operating frequency to the New Zealand CB band.
I once had a highly modified Johnson Viking 4740 am/ssb 80w 26/27 cb that went real good with my 3 element yagi. Modulator was a slider.
Hi there are you in Nz ?
I’m in Chch Nz and I’m looking for someone here that can do what you just did plus a have a uniden grant that could do with a check over
Cheers Bob

You didn’t have all the procedure in the frame!
less parts make them less cost to make
