- What happens when they clip the limiters or adjust the modulation pot fully counter clockwise.. this is why a professional test bench and the knowledge and training to properly use the test equipment s needed when working on radios, amps and accessories. like what ya see ? I'm a long time CB technician... (Been doing this for 50+ years) That spectrum display is convincing evidence; PROOF POSITIVE! Do NOT mess with those modulation limiters!!! Great video... Thank you for posting...
finally someone that knows what they are talking about. I've been trying to tell people this for years but they still have it done.
I asked for the picture of a road King radio is that the same as your as your as the Cobra 29 please let me know is it the 11th

Great video.. RIP Joe.
Awesome im sure glad to see a video posted on this and your exactly right. I get so many radios here in the shop that have had the limiter disabeled and it makes them splatter most people just do not get it.
You can use limiters for speech processing.low part of your voice will push up meters high end will be less. Adjust just right for max average power. Will make 4 watts sound like 10watts. Also if using average meter into dummy load 1.25 x carrier for 100% modulation. Cheap average meters do not read negative peaks.
It took me years to realize this.
Now I know what a splatter box is!!
Makes sense to me.
I was on 27.3850 lsb and all the sudden I had so much noise on the channel and it was on and off like a light switch. I went over to AM and it was truckers on channel 39 AM. The splatter that came from on truckers radio took out my recieve on 38 lsb
To increase modulation on the lx you turn counter clockwise? I was told clockwise.
If your power output is adjusted to a good avg forward swing, clipping the radio will sound good. If you tune the power to a high dead key, the downward audio on avg will swing back, sounding like crap. Clip audio, saying 5, 5, 5, in a norm voice tune the power adjustment to your highest avg forward swing.
15 clean watts will do better than 30 dirty watts
Is it better to keep it wide open
What they should do is install a switch so they can turn the limiter on or off and a tone is way different for a voice that why you don't whistle in the mic say 2 or 4 there both are high peaks you can use doing a fine tune adjustment
Just wondering where you putting a tone through the mic modulation when doing this test? OR where you turning the mic gain all the way down and just carrier alone?
i think he said 1k tone
The tone is coming into the radio through the ‘antenna jack’.
i used a 3" speaker with a foam "donut" over it, then set the mic on it and keyed up.
Cleaner.
Hi there Smokin Joe, who is "they" ? I the clip the limiters you print: they clip the limites....
Is that a peak reading bird meter?
Yes sir modulated signals can only be measured accurately with a meter that measures PEP
Great video of showing what not to have done you sound loud and proud but no one far will hear when clipped. I need your contact information so I can buy a radio from you brand new and with your clean tune and alignments service .

Hi smokin joe. what is the name brand equipment you are using? I tried to see it on the video but could not make it out.

@@christopherbell3768 sorry to hear that.
Some radios, maybe most, clip between 60- and 80%. If you can turn up the audio to 90% or maybe a little more, you will get out. If you have one that you have to scream into in order to get 60%, you won't sound very good. To clip or not to clip. My opinion: if you have 90% or better modulation, leave it alone. But 60%, not going to satisfy most people. A good tech can change the audio, different diode / parts connected to the modulation circuit and get you a higher level of modulation. That is the right way to do it, but that will be expensive, and take time. Cutting the diode out will raise the modulation, probably cause distortion, but not everyone has the money to pay a really savvy electronic tech to correct poor factory design. A radio should come from the factory with the modulation circuit capable of 90% modulation, and, with a variable resistor, inside the radio, that can adjust it up or down slightly. If you must cut the diode, use a scope, or, a meter- if it's all you have, and set the modulation until it just touches 100%. These are my opinions.
Why didn't you turn the pot down while the resistor was out? Pull it out again let's see what returning the pot does when you bring down the peak a bit
Because removing the diode makes the VR no longer function.
why not just turn the mic gain down ? wouldn’t that be the same
Not hardly. The goal is to get the most power out on the channel your talking on. If anything is clipped this can not be accomplished. Turning the mic gain down turns your audio down accimolishes nothing
Took this video to heart, couple of years ago bought a rosdking radio, clipped d11 diode, not knowing I was creating tons of distortion. Old radio man I used for years died, and some Jake leg in Tenn told me what to do. Had already hooked up talk back. Going to open it up and stick end of diode back on like it should be. If I want more audio, I have an old palomar box I can plug in that my old radio man set up for me about twenty years ago. Dead keys about 50, swings just under 200. Dont need it though. Finally figured out a barefoot, stock radio is usually more than adequate for going down the highway. Thanks for the video! (Unkel jed, Carrollton ms.)
So in other words, don’t clip the limiter.
all of my radios are clipped. an npc mod limits the neg peaks and allows well over 100% modulation with no waveform distortion and harmonics as low or lower than factory specs.
How is right. Never clip the modulation limiter, you just trash your audio by doing it. single Sideband operation is impossible without it.
Rondel.. This is a Cobra 29 LX. It does not have SSB.
