My take is a version of "go big or go home", which i call: "go deep or go home".
Programming is not only knowing how to type some functions.
It's learning to build a mental model of very complex systems. It's the data, it's data-relationships, it's timing, it's technical details and most importantly it's the methodology how to diagnose problems so complicated you can barely explain it to an expert in the field.
Be the guy where people say "if you quit this company, i will quit as well".
Agree.. the software engineer may die, but the software architect will live on.

but this is the worst it'll ever be... so that number can only ever go up. What's the limit? Maybe it'll be like self driving cars and never get to production level. Who knows.
Only if you assume that there is equally many problems on each level of complexity, which is not the case, as 99% of all problems I solve is entry level.

@@TESkyrimizer Don't worry, if it can replace programmers it can replace 97% of non heavy manual labour worker in general.
Just like with art: it's a tool. Not a replacement. Not because we choose to limit it, but because it inherently has limitations.
These tools though mean a task that would usually take a team to complete can be done by a single person in the same amount of time, therefore, software engineers will be less needed and paid less making their skill less valuable
@@DevLancelot No it doesn’t. This has been said for everything in the last 40 years. Back then, you would need a team to create the most basic games because there was no game engine you could just download of the internet.
Now, instead we need a team of programmers to code these engines and expand on them. Updating them, making them compatible with the newest technologies, you see my point?
All this new AI will do is making some stuff that was hard easier to do, but now we need people to work on the AI, upgrading the AI, making it compatible with new technology. Without easier workflow, we won’t avchieve better games.
If you think creating modern polished game is any easier now than back then you are simply wrong. Technology is always getting expanded, and we are always gonna need people to upgrade the new tools we now pocess.
Up to the point of machines surpassing our intelligence and getting consciousness, we will always have a need for coders, because up until then, we will always have a need to expand on these systems, and all the new future systems that these tools unlock.

For game development, despite A.I., I planned to still do most of my own programming and will just use A.I. when I get stuck. I'll do the same when it comes to art too.

Any Company would still need some Lead Software Engineers to review, validate and verify that the Docs, Planning and Design assets generated by the A.I. are rightful, necessary and will solve the main problem at hand... And in case the A.I. just generated "not feasible" solutions: those Engineers would be the ones to take pieces of that Plan from "here and there" to come up with a correct solution that really adapts itself to the situation.
So... our Jobs will still be there for some years... the same as it happens with those "self-driven cars": they're there, but we can't trust them yet (they're not fail safe), so the "Human" still has his "Job": Supervising very closely the car driving, been super aware and ready to take the wheel at any second if anything happens.
Oh God could you imagine what a code review with an AI would be like.
100% Correct! Ai isn't even close! Even if you gave the best instruction for an Ai to create some software, at the end of the day, that was you and not the Ai that created the software, the Ai just help you with the typing and syntax!
about 15 years ago, my son wanted to go to school to be a truck driver. Then he found out that 'self driving was right around the corner', so he didn't.
I think this is similar.
The AI truck driver will succeed on the road with other AI truck driver, no animals, bad weather conditions, etc... lets imagine the track fails nowhere, who will go and fix it? =) With human driver, he can do it locally, with minimum delays. With all our awesome technology, we still cannot predict WEATHER!!!
@@rickloyd8208in that case someone could simply be sent to fix the truck which is what would happen even with a human driver. While I agree that there is a bit too much hype now around AI replacing humans, I would be careful not to go to the other extreme and say that AI will not replace any jobs, because it most certainly will. Truck driving unfortunately will be one of them.

I feel this is still a beneficial tool for a developer of any kind rather than view it as a replacement for programmers which automates some of the manual processes of software development so ppl can focus on coding and logic.
But from Artist / creative in development POV : Imagine having a orchestration tool at ur disposal where u can simulate the idea & market u are trying to reach and see how it performs so u can plan accordingly as time passes.
literally in the exact situation you describe, I am likely taking a computer science degree in a year and a bit. Thanks for the reassurance that it will still be relevant

It might replace the writing of code, but you would have to still design what it is making
One of the problems is that current AI is not true AI, it's just a hopped-up web search. Which means "AI" is pretty much the same as a giant library. So if you know what you're doing, current AI has little to offer. Furthermore, it gets its information from human input, so it will have errors, and possibly deliberate disinformation. So I consider current "AI" to be amusing, and would never trust it with anything important.
However, just like a library, AI is a useful tool for learning. You can look up something like what's the best way to do . One must also realize AI's limitations. While it can slice-and-dice and rehash with the best of them, it cannot create new ideas. So any company that relies to heavily on AI just might learn this the hard way.
it's like reading an AI generated story vs a human story. It knows how to put words together, but in reality, it doesn't know what it's taking about. It can put lines of code together, but ultimately, it doesn't know what it's building.
I've seen ai advancements that tells me agi is here, it puts things together a lot better than what most humans can do, all I can say is get ready, everything is about to change, I've seen a glimpse of it

I am seeing so many comments where people are discouraged about doing a software engineering course, if ai is gonna replace them anyway.
For me I have been hearing the same stuff since chatgpt first came out and... Well here I am
The only reason I keep going is that AI will replace everyone else as well :)
I did watch Prime's video, and I thought it was a pretty balanced take, where he considers that the easy stuff might be getting automated soonish. And I get that the majority of developers are probably around my level of expertise, meaning ranging from hobbyist to amateur.
But I have to admit it did get me worried. I just happen to be just starting a course on more generic software development, but mostly to have some help getting a full grip on Laravel and be able to finally build websites from top to bottom and try to get some modicum of income with that skillset, be it working for myself, or someone else. And I was not expecting AI to actually start automating dev jobs so soon. Was really expecting stuff like tech support and menial tasks to go first.
Still, at the rate it's going, I'm also not *too* worried about all of this, since it would seem AGI, or at least something as game-changing as AGI, is no longer too many decades away, and at that point I completely agree that our society (and especially our economy) will need to face some profound changes that can go in a lot of different directions, and trying to anticipate them at this point is probably a fool's errand.
I see it like that, there will always be something new and fun to do. Would be lame to do the same stuff and job for the rest of my life😅
My response to a newcomer to software developer, you should learn software development if and only if you are interested in the field and always make sure from whom are you learning from.

I have 30+ years working on the QA side for some pretty big companies. Trust me when I say a competent tester will always break your code. The only thing is I highly doubt Devin or any AI programmer will take QA input and provide a fixed solution any faster than a human dev. A human dev has the option to turn to the tester and hash out expected functionality where an Ai is going to need to be told what to do each step of th way wasting time cycling builds until that one issue is fixes. I think that initially will be the crux to AI developers.
If AI can write code in 100% , at that point we all wont have any jobs, it will replace everything. I'm sure this will take time

@@wendten2ie the ability to create art on its own. What it is doing now is just mimicking styles it’s copied(being fed training material). Ai is very useful, but as OP says it doesn’t really have creativity. I’ll reevaluate this when it comes up with its own first genuine art form.

Every artist/inventor stand on the shoulder of giants. Maybe he wasn't inspired by another painter, but what about architects or nature?
If a robot can do problem solving then it will be soon able to solve any problem. And in this case bye bye any work
So far I have used all of the different AI's like coworkers, and it honestly feels great as someone working on solo projects. Especially for reviewing code and offering more performant alternatives. Also so fun to ask it ideas around a topic in the project. If it can completely make the game for me as well, I am not sure I would be mad haha. I would still playtest and request fine tuning to my liking, but it would be so cool to work on bigger projects that are so hard to manage on our own.
Really, if you want to get in Computer Science in college and both AI and games are of interest to you, you should 100% go towards AI major rather than Game Dev.
Money is easily 2-3x, and you can totally still work in the game industry with a CS degree in AI.
AI will never replace a really good senior programmer nor analyst, because sooner or later, the AI will run into a problem that it can't solve (imagine a completely new problem - not solved yet = halt or nonsenses). All those bots will be only a tool for people, who can consult this AI to get fastest, already proved results or rather suggestions prepared for copy pasta. Each company will have its own AI that will be trained for problems in a specific company and this is going to be a big market. Devin is a really good marketing tool for that, so we could have already the biggest dog in this quite new business.
AI won't, but true AGI will if it has the ability to improve itself in the same way a human can it can just learn the other skills necessary for a really good senior programmer or analyst. Devin isn't a threat, it's what comes down the line in a few years which will scare senior developers.
Game Dev might be safer for several more years since human creativity is more important in the combination of the skills, and doesn't just involve pure logic to solve problems but many combined approaches. (music,art, level design, programming etc)
Devin only being about to do 13% is a joke right now, imagine when it's at 100% though and if that happens in less than a year then what happens after that? "never" is a very very long time.
Build AGI that will solve not learned problem and you are going to be a master of the universe. In order to do that, you need build an imaginably powerful quantum computer, which is absolutely beyond our theoretical knowledge and engineering skills (we're talking billions of qubits) and this is simply impossible because by the time it appears there won't be any humans because we'll die out first. @phen-themoogle7651
AGI will settle like chatgpt settled, just a marketing brand that is named too pompously for the reason that it is more or less the peak of the capabilities of those tools. It has nothing to do with true AGI, which does not exist and will never exist (in comparison what is human capable of).
@@thoribass696 if intelligence can spawn from random mutations using something as inefficient as chemical signals, it is absolutely possible that it can appear by actual purposeful design . You may think you are special, but in reality you are nothing but an extremely inefficient computer.

One thing i don't think enough people consider is that, while AI isn't going to replace high skill professionals and specialists, atleats not any time soon. It does still inherently make these jobs more competetive for what the AI can do and often raise the bar for entering these positions even when viewed as just a tool. This is common for most technological improvements. A secratary 50 years ago could get away with not knowing how to use a computer, but today being able to use a PC and smartphone is minimum bar to entry. Similarly for developers it's inevitable your going to expected to be able to work with AI for alot of positions in future, just like game devs today are generally expected to have some experience with a major game engine, which didn't even exist for developers the generation before. Or to be able to use internal and external CMS and wiki docs etc..
Even when AI becomes fully capable of art and software engineering and game dev, it'll still be useful to those skills for the same reason you'd wanna learn those things when working alongside other humans that can do those tasks. Right now, if you're someone who doesn't know art or programming and you look a human who does, it's basically wizardry to you in the same way that it will appear like wizardry when the AI does it; and so educating yourself will still make you a better partner as you know what questions to ask, how long things take to make, what the limitations are, etc. Once AGI arrives, I imagine there will be variants that view humans as trainable creatures or small children that it enjoys teaching and watching us grow and develop in the same way a parent or pet owner can do far more than their ward but still encourages them to improve and do things.
Let's be absolutely clear about the whole AGI thing. AGI has only one purpose, to prepare market and customers for this bright new big cow which will be milked very soon. The added value of this show is to scare people that they will lose their seats, which will cause everyone to be extremely interested in the topic and thus increase the number of potential customers, since it is aimed precisely at the IT audience. Perfect business plan with top marketing.

The goal is that you're learning, it doesn't matter how long you take.
If you are a beginner then that course should take you at the very least a month to complete. You are only supposed to actually learn the contents of the course, that's the only goal.
I'm 31. Given the current rate of acceleration, I honestly think people my age are going to live to see AGI become a reality. And I'm not sure how to feel about that.

Programming will never die but it will change over the years. My prediction is that we might see 2 new types of programmers. The incredibly competitive and hard side where you code FOR the AI systems and the easier and more accessible side where you code WITH the AI systems for everything else (apps, websites and games).
Maybe the two tier programming landscape is already there.

With all the rogue AI movies, games, books, etc. Seeing AI nowadays that has done things like creating its own language that humans can't understand, I can't understand why we keep playing with AI.
I have been in the industry for 30 years now. I have been at every level, worked with executives. I can tell you now that burying your face in the sand and pretending everything is going to be fine is not practical. The industry itself is actively developing AI as a final goal TO END JOBS. Thats their goal. Thats why they are pouring billions into this technology. As that is their stated out loud goal, that by itself should worry you.
Now today as it stands an AI cannot do everything. However, it rapidly advances in tech. I did time with some major game studios that are part of the upper tier of tech and without going into names, in 2022 they had demos of AI doing 75% of the grunt work to get an unreal engine game up and going. That was 2022. And 75% complete.
I think that people saying that there is no need to fear are either grifting to get the last dime out of their subscriber base before the plug gets pulled, or are just overly optimistic thinking some new tech will show up and give new types of jobs.
AI is designed to remove ALL knowledge based jobs out and ALL jobs that require skill so that ANYONE can do them. When ANYONE can do a job, that is economics at play. Everyone can do the job therefore no need to pay you anything more than poverty wages.
With gaming you are going to see the rise of literally thousands if not more games put up on steam a month. The white noise is going to go through the roof. The shift will then be from being a software dev to being a marketing guru with lots of resources to market your stuff to be heard above all the noise.
The wildcard is we have some people hoping and coping that AI won't get to the level required to fully take most jobs away. And maybe it won't. Having worked with and working with now AI developers, I have zero doubt that before 2030 AI will be writing almost everything for you and that software engineering will be a hobby. That doesn't stop you from writing games or apps the good old fashioned way because you aren't beholden to investors so you can still do well, but you'll have to really understand marketing and have the financial backing to market your work above the loud white noise that will be pounding everyone else.
The music industry already showed us how that works, as did writing books. A very tiny few can do well, the rest cannot be heard over all the white noise very well. Regardless of your skill. Low-skill bad bands could be on big shows if they had the marketing dollars and great bands you never hear of get buried because they don't have the marketing clout.

Cause from ur points , most industries u mentioned in end are doing pretty ok/good in modern time even with digitalization.
Our team works for offsite accounts & we arent exactly in sunset land(have to be vague or youtube ghosts any comment that looks vaguely like criticism of the Wstern side coming from non-regional IP) economic / social spheres so dont know how this point will apply to u but here it goes anyway :
[ I work in automation & we discuss this topic frequently among team members about use of AI and its use as a orchestration tool and many of the senior & junior in our use chatgpt / Gemini / Github's Copilot / lightspeed for some of their work so its not exactly replacing programmers per se
but creating a new breed of em by utilizing those potential ppl , who are often technically sound but arent much into execution and work as tech leads which is a admin job so the new breed of programmers will be these kind of ppl , who are both business & tech savvy
So it does work in taking more work out of ppl are mostly a jack of many trades & master of none and encourages more ppl who just say "I like to code and not run a team" into managment work so there is psuedo agile team in place. ]
Atleast where I am from , this is the current state of industry where there is hybridization of workforce with new tech , which might get worse or better only time will tell
but from a place of corporatism & hyper-consumeristic society , understand the fear of these tech which promote production over demand so there is a good chance most companies will become like former Car capital of the world.
I ain't worried by even a single bit. When it comes to complex models, I know AI is terrible because it's not well informed of what everything around the problem looks like

Welp I got scared for real, and thought of not getting into cs in the future and basically become a social science guy
Someone has to make sure it comes up with the right ideas and code to execute those ideas, it's akin to someone learning react and not learning javascript, sure you can build some cool stuff pretty quickly with react but if you want a custom thing you're screwed unless a library exists that covers your very niche needs.
And beyond that, there is something quite amazing about learning new stuff, so keep at it, make your games and push yourself.

if it allows you to make code 10x faster, you'll need to have 10x more code to write, or it will make you abundant.
Demand will probably increase over time, as prices will fall, but it does take time for the market to adapt, and if supply is every increasing, a supply-demand equilibrium might never converge

Indeed. Robots were going to make all work force irrelevant. No. Some tasks were replaced. But it still needs people

Step 3: Sit back and enjoy free money!
I believe the one thing Devin has going is that it needs no rest and can execute plans automatically. Just like how some of the layoffs are ongoing in the art related industry, they won't totally replace everybody. But boy, they will cut the required workforce by a considerable amount. Which also leads to less job opportunities for some skillsets.
Not to fearmonger, but people's reaction to the current relatively low efficiency, is of the same reactions when AI art generators came out. Look at how its going now, freelancers and entry-level positions might be affected the most.

Indeed, But "normal" AKA non-nerdy people want to make games or software with no code. Also the corporations' non techy CEOs and managers also try hard to reduce costs of paying software engineers by investing tons of money into no code tools and AI tools are the new hype now. We still have to wait and see where this technology will evolve but I guess they will reach a roof very soon, Also with more and more AI generated garbage online for the newer models to train on their quality will get reduced over time (not by virtue of the algorithms or underlying mathematical theory but by virtue of reduced quality of data online). So we're safe for long time I guess.

I'd say, if it takes a thousand messages back and forth to build and refine your application, then this makes English a very poor and inefficient programming language!
So unless it's something immensely trivial, It's definitely easier to learn and use a programming language!

Sure AI will be replacing inside AAA studios, Indy developers will be safe
Just have to adapt like those Ford employees when they were replaced with robotics
GPT 4 was at 1.7% and that was 2023, so we'll probably hit the 90 mark even sooner
And I agree, AAA Studios will die off first, as every indie will be a AAA studio in a few yearsd
that won't happen.
Programming a aaa game is not the same as using a robot to bolt a few doors onto a car.
People who don't code underestimate just how difficult it is.
Even with an advanced game engine like Unreal or Unity there's a lot of work to do in terms of understanding maths, physics, graphics libraries, ai routines for enemy movements.
It's not just a case of being able to write a few lines of c# or C++.
Pretty much any coding problem needs to be solved via an algorithm.
Creating algorithms is really what top software engineers are paid for, not writing a few lines of code.
The current level of AI would have no chance of knowing what a game even is, let alone creating one, from scratch.

It is clear that the age of coding is coming to an end and knowing all the syntax and formating is no longer going to be an advantage. That said, development will be just fine as coding was only ever just the means to the end and the means are changing.
If you think that in more or less 5 years from now AI will still not be able to replace a senior programmer, you are basically crazy or in denial. I said they will "be able to replace", not that 100% of people will be replaced. In fact, AI will be able to do all "computer jobs" better than us. It is hard to predict how companies and society will adapt because if salaries go down too hard, there is a snowball effect on economy. These AIs are cheaper and more efficient tools, just like you are a tool for the company.
Yea people are scared of Ai, and ignorant at the same time, in the last 2 years I’ve seen so many people saying the word “never” my self included, and since then it has abolished those words. I’ve seen a glimpse of AGI, it got me in tears and me pinching myself for the last 5 days as I think I’m dreaming.
