    "You basically just have to make a dozen crappy games before you can make something good".
    I couldn't agree more! I started off in 2022 following an 8 hour long 2D dungeon crawler game tutorial which taught me sooo much about unity since it was my first time making a game. Then, I tried to use those 2D elements to make my own 2D tower defense-like game. I only made two different levels but I learned a lot from that. Then, I followed a couple 3D game tutorials and decided I was ready to take on Unity 3D. I started working on my own unique 3D minigame and there were so many ups and downs but I got so much experience from it. Then I got burnt out and stopped working on it for a while, a couple months later I got motivated to get it finished and after I did I put it on steam in February of 2023 (and I've sold 25 copies to date)! That game is definitely not made in the most optimized way, but I've learned from it and I know what not to do in my future games. Now I'm working on a realistic multiplayer simulator game in Unity 3D and I continue to learn so much. I also continuously go back to that 3D minigame I released on Steam and update it with new features that I learn from working on my other games. The learning never stops and the more games you make, the better you get!

    "Make lots of simple games"
    I'll add to that quote: "and FINISH EACH ONE OF THEM". That's the hardest part of doing a game
    And when I say "finish" I don't mean complete the game with super graphics, multiplayer support and console ready. I mean complete it to a level of being playable outside the game engine, export to a free platform like itch, and let other people and friend play them.
    Also if possible, watch them play your games. There's an incredible amount of feedback just watching someone play your game.

    • @CodeMonkeyUnity
      @CodeMonkeyUnity  Месяц назад +4

      Oh yup I should have emphasized that point. In my mind "make games" == "complete games" but I know some people start tons of games but never finish them.
      Getting a game to the finish line is indeed extremely important!

    • @lorddiego
      @lorddiego Месяц назад

      @@CodeMonkeyUnityAbsolutely! And also, IMHO, one of the hardest things to achieve when you're a beginner. It's completely out of scope the idea of "finish" a game.
      Most of us just focus on doing stuff, adding mechanics, writing code, graphics, sfx, music, UI, but almost never think of "...and now, the ending". Probably due to scope creep, which you mentioned several times in your past videos.

Also, you can technically argue that games like Dwarf Fortress, Kenshi, Project Zomboid are more complex than Sims 4 while being made primarily by a single person (but those guys are absolutely mental 😆)

    It's always great to see ur tutorials. It feels simple however it's content is a must / essential in any game.
    I have been trying to make a health, reload, and inventory system similar to escape from tarkov or arena breakout. But I have faced a lot of issues in avatar mask especially when climbing and moving, it's not only about decreasing speed, it's about disabling the functionality of the blacked mask and syncing the animation with it, also bleeding limbs and detection of bullet collision. Each part of the body has its own health. Then the reloading system is completely different than any other game, it's not just counting bullets in your buckets.
    And finally the inventory system.
    If you can make a tutorials on the above features, then you've made the core features of a multi million game. So can you make the above features or it's complex even for codemonkey?

    I think I'm getting better thanks to your course. I'm still getting stuck with the execution, however. For example, I wanted to instantiate an array of clouds to spawn at random intervals and pick a cloud at random. When I tried to do that using a flappy bird tutorial, I got an error saying "GameObject[] doesn't have a transform". So I had to do it using one cloud at a time instead of an array. My workaround isn't terrible but it's not what I wanted if I was able to use an array.
    EDIT: I got it to work! :)
    GameObject newCloud = Instantiate(cloudsPrefab[Random.Range(0, cloudsPrefab.Length)], new Vector2(cloudsPrefab[Random.Range(0, cloudsPrefab.Length)].transform.position.x, cloudsPrefab[Random.Range(0, cloudsPrefab.Length)].transform.position.y + Random.Range(cloudMinRange, cloudMaxRange)), cloudsPrefab[Random.Range(0, cloudsPrefab.Length)].transform.rotation);

    i can't fully agree with that. sure, it's important to gain experience by solving as many small problems as possible, but you don't have to develop tons of games to gain that experience. i've had a game idea for years and i'm always trying to come up with new ideas, improve things, or learn new things for this game, to make it even better. as long as you don't try to make a mega hit right away to make a lot of money and only do it as a hobby. you can also gain a lot of experience if you have a dream game and just try to bring it to life somehow. that works just as well. :)

      @CodeMonkeyUnity  Месяц назад

      Sure, as long as you're making things you're going to learn, even if it's all things on the same project.
      However there are some challenges that only show up at the end of a project (saving, main menu, loading, creating a complete experience) and if you do not complete multiple games then you only gain experience on those very important areas just once.

      @@CodeMonkeyUnity yes, but still, experience grows over time, depending on the problems you're trying to solve, and not everyone is a fan of the idea of making hundreds of games. but you can still be experienced in that one genre, if that's your way of being a developer. :) and i think that's also ok to be a pro in one topic of 100% instead of an experienced one in 10 topics. because you might never need most of that experience if you only work on one genre. :)

    I am at the other end of the scale. I have wanted to be a game developer since i was a kid with a commodore 64 and a coding book I couldn't understand. I ended up just being a regular C# dev for the last 15 years. I have made clones of some basic games using unity and it seems so much more easy and accessible than ever before (having tried 3ds max and flash a long time ago), but now I've realised my imagination is terrible. I can't come up with any concept that i think people would actually pay for, so I just can't take the leap to commiting to a project.

      Imagination/Creativity is definitely a tricky thing to teach, for that my advice is play lots of games and find out what you enjoy playing. Then take some elements from several games you like playing and try putting them together in an interesting way!
      It's also something you gain with experience, game design is indeed an entire discipline that some people spend their entire lives learning.

    i have the confidence to make thos game but i don't have the time or the experience to make those game's
    in realty the reason i don't have this ability it's because
    i have big scope project in mind and because i work alone in the end it's not that
    I don't have that ability it's more that my project requires more people's or more time to make and if spend it may helpss but don't really have the option
    unfortunately for my i don't have the team and the money that i need to make those projects and i end up try to make all those projects by my own and take forever to create.
    it's not that i did something wrong in fact its miracle how far i have already i got on those projects but still it's not enough.

    I already have experience, but pretty simple games like pacman or even Doom or generic WW2 shooter wouldn't make any money in steam. You're more likely to end up in the red because of steam fee
    I am making games for ~10 years (RPG Maker and Scratch mostly) and ~4 years on Unity, but only as hobby, nothing more. Most of games so simple that nobody would play it ( I have created 37 fully finished games). It would be great to make some money, but I am to scary to publish them

    • @CodeMonkeyUnity
      @CodeMonkeyUnity  Месяц назад +1

      It's very hard to make videos on that topic because every single game is unique.
      There's a million ways to do pre-production, some people like tons of detail, others (like me) prefer a very rough overview and get started making a prototype right away, both options are valid.
      It sounds like you're getting stuck in analysis paralysis. My advice is exactly what I said in the video, start by remaking simple games and slowly increase the complexity.

    What I like about game development is writing code. But what I dislike is the art (3D and 2d) as I dont like that much. Also there is lighting , shaders , VFX ,audio etc we cant ignore. It is really hard to be a solo game developer as such. Though u have the AI tools to solve this issue (3D art), but there comes copyright issues or else u have to pay freelancers , which can be expensive ,if u r doing big games. So @CodeMonkeyUnity what would ur advice be, to deal with the not so fun part
