'Punnathanam' nutmeg is an improved nutmeg variety developed in 1981 through selection by Varkey Thomman.
This improved variety had received various recognitions and awards. Best nutmeg variety award (National award) in 2015 from President of India. Best nutmeg variety award from Kerala Agricultural university in 2017 and best nutmeg variety award (State award) in 2018 from cheif minister of Kerala.
Salient features;
-Extra large size of nut and mace
-Weight of dry nut appximately 20 grams and mace 4 grams.
-Upright growing habit saves more space for planting.
-Tolerant to pests.
