I went to a very small high school in New Hampshire, USA when this song came out. We girls (cheerleaders) would ride on the same bus as the players to “away” games and we would be in the front of the bus and sing this song a capella harmonizing on the way home. The boys in the back of the bus would go quiet and listen to us.
"If I fell" was featured on the Beatles' third album, A HARD DAY'S NIGHT (1964). It was a part of the soundtrack of their first movie (also titled A HARD DAY'S NIGHT). During the film, the Beatles perform "If I Fell" twice: for a mock rehearsal sequence and at the concert that ends the movie.
The beauty and the brilliance of the Beatles harmonies is that they are deceptively simple. The melodies and the lyrics go by so easily that the complexity of the songwriting and the arranging just kind of gets missed. Which, in and of itself, isn't always bad. All those long hours gigging in Hamburg gave them an almost superhuman ability to craft unbelievable harmonies that compel and hold peoples' attention.
I don't know if you've done it yet, but my favorite Beatles "sweet" song is "And I Love Her". It's a Paul song, and I'm usually a John guy, but the melody is so gorgeous it just melts me every time.
After all these years of being a Beatles fan, And I Love her is definitely in my top 10, possibly top 5. And to my pleasant surprise, is among many fan’s favorites, too. If I Fell also remains to be one of my favorites, and I to my surprise, it’s hardly mentioned. It’s such a beautiful song

Absolutely the finest harmony the Beatles ever did . Such a simple tune, yet sooo romantic. Your 100% right: it's so pretty . I did this harmony with Paul (my friend Paul L.) many years ago on a Valentine's Day show we did at an art center in NY City. Of all the songs we did, this one was requested by the audience as a replay .
I’ve always loved the harmony and melody of this song, but I never knew, until last week, that Lennon sings the melody and then switches to do the harmony. There’s several good videos that showcase this and it’s so impressive
"If I fell" was part of their live program in 1964. John Lennon and Paul McCartney sang it side by side. Too much of a good thing for quite a few girls, who then fell into a blissful swoon. There are also some live videos of the song on youtube.
So glad you picked this one. I always thought "If I Fell" was overlooked among the Beatles songbook. IMO, it's one their all-time greatest songs, and a Lennon masterpiece on par with Strawberry Fields or A Day in the Life. Amazingly clever chord changes (especially after the intro and on the middle eight), ethereal harmonies, the kind of songs that sounds perfect from the first note to the last...

From the Hard Day's Night album, an album packed from start to finish with great sing-alongs. No wonder the world had Beatlemania. How can anyone not help but love them?
I believe this is one of their best efforts and not given the credit. Everyone loves it, me included. John does the low end of the harmony and Paul does the high part. What I love about it is it start with John solo then they do harmony. I love the way that it's harmony and then John and Paul sing together, no harmony. So, it's no harmony then harmony the same then harmony and back and forth. When people sing along, they seem to always sing Paul's high part. It isn't that easy to sing John's part. I finally was able to zero in on John's voice and now when I hear it, I sing John's part. I agree with you 100% on your comment of the song being 'ear candy. That's exactly what I think to. When The Beatles were first starting out (after their big splash on The Ed Sullivan Show), they were writing 3 songs a day. At one point, in the beginning, they had 5 songs in the top 10 at once. I believe when the did the Ed Sullivan Show they had something like 72 million people watching. Not all that much by today's standards with so many channels with cable. At that time there were only 3 stations to watch. ABC-TV, CBS-TV and NBC-TV. So numbers like they drew were unheard-of. aThe Beatles reinvented themselves and their music many times as they grew personally and musically. All their music is genius, but their early albums - like this one - hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for this one.
One of my all-time favorites, and a perfect example of why Lennon and McCartney went together so well. Such an amazing blend of voices. Throw in George's playing on the 12 string and you have musical perfection. You can see the Everly brothers influence here. For some other great examples of their harmonies try 'This Boy' and 'Because' for three part harmony, and 'Baby's In Black', 'I'll Be Back' and 'I Don't Want To Spoil The Party'. There are lots of others, those are just some of my personal favorites.

Thank you so much for getting to this song. It has always been one of my favorites precisely for the reasons you just described perfectly. I knew you would love it. Thank you again. 😍
Another beautiful song (even more so, in my opinion) from that album is the exquisite "And I Love Her" with George playing a haunting Spanish guitar. Imagine being a little kid and going to the theater to see "A Hard Day's Night" when it came out, and getting to watch the Beatles perform songs like this.
The song that switched me on to the Beatles... In fact it was just the harmony where it changes key. One little piece which was magical and so different.
One of my favorites! I was a 13 year-old kid when it was on the radio, trying to figure out jr. high school love. You are right, a beautiful, sweet song. Thanks
Agree Hari! One of their best harmonies! Here it’s just john n Paul. Even more magic when George chimes in. Agree with another comment to try This Boy. Also YES IT IS!
From the Hard Day's Night album and featured in the movie of the same name - surprised as a fan you haven't seen it. The intro has a very adventurous chord progression. I can hear the influence of the Everly Brothers in the vocals.
You made me remember how great ELO was. Listening to my favorite one. Telephone Line. Thank you!!! So, there lead singer Jeff L. Sang at George Harrison tribute concert. An article said John Lennon called them the sons of the Beatles. And that he thought they sounded like Sgt. Pepper album. That song sounds a little like Queen too. So much great music back then.
Loved watching your reaction. Never tired of either Beatles songs or your reactions to them! More sweetness in store when you listen to "And I Love Her" and "This Boy" also from the early years.
There are so many Beatles songs like this one so just keep on listen to the Beatles and you will find dussins of them . I loved them from the very first album but realy feld their greatnes when Beatles For Sale came and the first song No Reply on the album has a speciall place in my hart. But every Beatles album has a plays in my hart now after 65 years of age . Can only agree with Mr van Dijk so greetings from Stockholm Sweden.
I always loved the line, "I found out live was more than Just Holding Hands," b/c their 1st US hit was "I wanna hold your hand." Get it?! They really did grow up with their entire generation.
Cool reaction . And they had no vocal training , they just dropped these harmonies with ease , and did it just as well live every time .Although there's a live If I Fell where John's voice cracks on the high note & he laughs . Try And I Love Her ,it was on the same EP from Hard Days Night , it's just as sweet . All this Beatles stuff is music I've loved for 50 yrs now , love seeing someone discover them .
I've always regarded this is a John Song but, in fact, it's one of those bed-sitting songs where John may have delivered tune and lyrics, but Paul's harmony is so integral that, sitting together, facing each other, it is a true Lennon-McCartney work. George's contribution was the beginning of having that High Harmony become his lifelong signature 'donation' to the Beatles as well as every other artist he worked with (I'm thinking of Wilbury's, Clapton tours, etc. In my mind, this song is followed by YES IT IS, which is a 9-part harmony recording. This is one of the songs that, in his later years when John was dismissive (even pissing on) 'his earlier work', I winced. "No no no-!!"
Amazing how John could be so critical of work that astounds the rest of us. "Yes It Is" Is a beautiful track that, if I remember, John said was a rewrite of "This Boy" that "didn't work."
If you think that was sweet, just wait till you hear "And I Love Her." I have really been thoroughly, truly enjoying your reactions, especially your Beatles reactions. And, wow! You're reacting to one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums from one of my favorite movies by my all-time favorite band. This song demonstrates the power of the Lennon-McCartney songwriting team: McCartney gave the song its romantic hues, if you will, while, you're right, Lennon does sound vulnerable, but he puts in his trademark, sinister, rock'n'roll guy twist to it. There is a romantic hope of new love in this song from Paul's angle, but John just has to make sure that he gets in his retaliation by making sure his former love is gonna cry when she finds out about his new love! I also think this song clearly shows how keyed in and tight The Beatles were to one another as a band--their talents lock in together and they meld together as one unit to make this beautiful song. This shows in their musicianship (they might not have been the most technically accomplished players, but they sure did sound good), the harmonies and writing between John and Paul (George's songwriting would develop a little bit later). I also love the scene where the Beatles "perform" this song during a "rehearsal sequence" in the movie A Hard Day's Night.
you will just swim in the harmony on Yes It Is, a song that was huge on the radio from an album with some great stuff but that gets forgotten, Beatles VI
I recall listening to a tape of this album in the 1980s and being simultaneously surprised at its primitivism and the absolute purity of the song-writing. Paul carries this, to some extent, but it's still a fabulous expression in harmony.
I never tire of listening to The Beatles.
They had some of the most beautiful melodies ever written!

That low part in the chorus harmony by John that 'walks up' in sync with Paul's high part is one of the prettiest things I've ever heard in a harmony.
I played this song in a band I was in back in the 80's. It's so unusual in that the lead vocals are actually the harmony.
It's a gorgeous song and, once those beautiful harmonies begin, it's almost impossible to figure who is singing lead. With every album, they showed how fast they were evolving and experimenting. I love so many other bands' music, but no one comes close to The Beatles.
Thank you so much for getting to this song. It has always been one of my favorites precisely for the reasons you just described perfectly. I knew you would love it. Thank you again. 😍
Always great story tellers. It's why they connect with sooo many of us.
I think IF I FELL and DO YOU WANT TO KNOW A SECRET had the greatest openings for love ballots. Good job Harri.
The song that switched me on to the Beatles... In fact it was just the harmony where it changes key. One little piece which was magical and so different.
I agree. It has a simple, very pretty sound
"Here, There and Everywhere" has quite a pretty melody as well.
...and in less than 4 years from this song, they'd write "Helter Skelter". In less than two - "Tomorrow Never Knows". Just insane.
You should try "And I Love Her", is from the same album as this one.
Thanks for listening! They were a force that defined the '60s and beyond. They brought so much enjoyment and excitement to our lives....💖🎇✨
If I fell is from the 3rd album A Hard Day’s Night. Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱.
One of my favorites! I was a 13 year-old kid when it was on the radio, trying to figure out jr. high school love.
You are right, a beautiful, sweet song. Thanks
I always think of the scene in Hard Days Night and that neat smile of Ringos as he starts to play
My first ever Beatles album and still my favourite. Bought it in 1965 or '66, not sure - or rather, my father bought it for us
I remember this song on a 45 . The flip side I believe was And I love her another great tune
Damn that's good. So simplistic, and those harmony intervals ! Wow!
Lennon had so much soul
You made me remember how great ELO was. Listening to my favorite one. Telephone Line. Thank you!!! So, there lead singer Jeff L. Sang at George Harrison tribute concert. An article said John Lennon called them the sons of the Beatles. And that he thought they sounded like Sgt. Pepper album. That song sounds a little like Queen too. So much great music back then.
Loved watching your reaction. Never tired of either Beatles songs or your reactions to them! More sweetness in store when you listen to "And I Love Her" and "This Boy" also from the early years.
Thanx Buddy
Another great early Beatles song in the same vein is "Here, There, and Everywhere"!
I love your assessment of this song. I have loved the song as long as I can remember, but you put a new light on it for me. Thank you.
I remember.on American Idol a contestant sang If I Fell. Randy was not pleased saying the dude screwed up one of John's finest songs!! I love it!!
Beautiful song. Listen to the song, and I love her from the same album
When you can't help but sing along, that's when a song is good.
such lovely sweet song
Cool reaction . And they had no vocal training , they just dropped these harmonies with ease , and did it just as well live every time .Although there's a live If I Fell where John's voice cracks on the high note & he laughs . Try And I Love Her ,it was on the same EP from Hard Days Night , it's just as sweet . All this Beatles stuff is music I've loved for 50 yrs now , love seeing someone discover them .
Harry best have you head the Beatles And I Love Her !!!!! Please don't miss it 😚 ❤️
I've always regarded this is a John Song but, in fact, it's one of those bed-sitting songs where John may have delivered tune and lyrics, but Paul's harmony is so integral that, sitting together, facing each other, it is a true Lennon-McCartney work.
I only watch your The Beatles reactions
Love the beatles reactions. I've always liked their early albums more for some reason, but it's the beatles and i dont dislike anything they made
Another one of My favorites.
you will just swim in the harmony on Yes It Is, a song that was huge on the radio from an album with some great stuff but that gets forgotten, Beatles VI
I recall listening to a tape of this album in the 1980s and being simultaneously surprised at its primitivism and the absolute purity of the song-writing. Paul carries this, to some extent, but it's still a fabulous expression in harmony.
Those harmonies!
