Paul’s ‘Granny Music’ was almost always ridiculously catchy with brilliant melodies and that’s the genius of it. You always need a bit of light and shade. Paul also wrote the lyrically deep The Fool on the Hill that was included on this EP. It’s the ability to do both that makes him so good.

@@etc7070 Honey Pie is a brilliant pastiche. But Martha My Dear is something else. It's poignant and beautifully structured and enjoyably whimsical but it manages to avoid that kitsch which (for me) mars a number of his songs and prevents them from all being masterpieces. The truth is that the many 'reactions' from Americans on older songs, comedy shows, history etc are really illuminating and helping me (at least) re-discover and appreciate more, the great things that we grew up with, but which perhaps we took too much for granted. I don't know why, but the American reactions always seem to be the best.

"San Ferry Anne", of course, is an expression derived from the French phrase _"Ça ne fait rien",_ which means "it doesn't matter" (that initial 'C' has the hook under it indicating it's pronounced like an S despite being in front of an A, where it would otherwise be "Ka").

John's "And Your Bird Can Sing" is many people's favorite (except John himself). He dismissesd it as a "throw-away" song.
When the song first appeared, guitarists were flummoxed by George's lead guitar work. Joe Walsh (The Eagles) spent months as a budding teenage guitarist learning how to play the incredibly challenging harmonized guitar piece. Years later, he was speaking to Ringo and the subject of "And Your Bird Can Sing" came up. Walsh recounted how he had spent weeks or months mastering the song. Ringo cracked up laughing. "No. Paul was playing in sync with George. No one guitarist can play it by themselves."
Now on RUclips there are many tutorials on how to play it as a solo. Still considered a rite of passage if you want to be considered a top guitarist.

I love that you're putting your hand up as a champion of Paul's 'Granny Music'... Back in the day few people dared to admit to liking it after John made this devastating comment, but I think after a few decades of water under the bridge, people can just like what they like again, and not worry about changing musical fashions and snide comments..
Fool On The Hill and Blue Jay Way are the other unmissable tracks on this album, from Paul and George respectively. Both express a feeling of a subtly altered reality, in different ways.
If you can find them you might enjoy the ethereal, misty mood of Blue Jay Way accompanied by a groovy psychedelic video that includes George playing a keyboard painted onto the floor in front of him, and the video to Fool on the Hill in which Paul skips about the hills in a long overcoat to a song that for me is somewhat reminiscent among other things of the #0 card in the Tarot's Major Arcana, 'The Fool'..

This song is a nod to dance hall music in the UK which the Beatles grew up listening to.

I sing this to my kids as we dance around, because I am their Mother and this was a hit before I was born. :)

Such a great point about The Beach Boys! Never noticed that. Also the backing vocals have a very Scouse sound to them more than usual.

Paul had another fine "granny" tune from the White Album called Honey Pie. It would have been a hit in the 1930's.

Their most underrated album. Baby youre a rich man is worth a listen. Only a northern song is great as well! Keep up the great reviews!

To complement this one, you should listen to When I'm 64. Paul wrote it for his dad's birthday. It's catchy and fun.

Hari, Beach Boys Pet Sounds was Paul's inspiration for Sgt Peppers, the talk was the Beatles were all played out- Paul working on Sgt ... was thinking "Yeah just wait...."

Hi Harri, please check out Badfinger their songs No Matter What, Day After Day and Baby Blue. They were signed by the Beatles' Apple lable, even took their name from a Beatles song. 💖

The Kinks made a living with these type of "wholesome" type songs in the Sixties and its their best stuff but not well known. They got kicked out of the US so Ray Davies dedicated himself to writing about the good old days of England. Songs like Village Green, Waterloo Sunset, Afternoon Tea, Sunny Afternoon.
