If I took a blowtorch to my van it wouldn't end well 😂. Fantastic to see a mechanic that actually knows what they are talking about 👍👍
It's good to see a mechanic who knows what he's talking about and i'm guessing is honest with posting this vid. This man is worth his paying whatever he charges to fix your car. Top lad & thanks for sharing 👍
I appreciate that!
I totally agree 👍
Brilliant 5* job & in such awful weather.. dedication to his job this chap.👍👍💪
This is the first video of your that I’ve watched, I’m impressed. You are working in a parking lot, on ramps and in the rain. Undeterred, you calmly fix this vehicle as if it’s normal business. My hats off to you sir because around me here in the States I don’t know of any mechanic that would do this. I don’t think you charge enough for your service.
Welcome aboard! And thanks 😊
I've had the little pumps for the vaporiser fail before . Theres an activation for it so you can check it's doing something . The new pump from ford is hundreds, it's the same £5 pump that's inside my chinese diesel heater fyi .
Great job again , I can't believe you can do all that without swearing.
Probably all Cursing done Off camera 😂😂😂
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤣🤣🤣
Best Mechanic on RUclips. From another Mechanic 👍
Thank you
Well done I cured my BMW 330d's DPF around ten years ago. Had dealer software on my laptop and just put wynns diesel gold treatment in the tank and went on a 2hr motorway drive. Watched the back pressure drop from around 140 mbar to about 15 and it let me reset the active regen sequence. Job done. Since then Ive been sure use wynns gold or more recently dipetane on a regular basis. Saves alot of heartache😊
BMW F30?

Well done mate. A tech who knows his diesels! Cheers from Australia!

Very informative, great job, good to see someone who knows what they are doing.
I appreciate that!
When my brother had this on his mondeo. Ford quoted an air flow meter and dpf as the cause = $9000aud = muppets. I got involved. The dpf was blocked technically. But the back of the car was covered in soot. So i removed the dpf and flushed it. 5% flow to 98%. Then checked over. Car was over fueling and oil leaking from the front bar. Last I checked, there wasn't anything holding oil in the bumper = boost hose was torn =airflow meter fault and oil leak!
Then after a week of driving. Dpf was struggling again with regen unable = blocked fuel vapouriser as you have.
If we followed ford. We would have been $9000 in the hole before the intercooler hose and vapouriser would have even been investigated, let alone, found.
BTW, i removed the glow plug and cleaned the vapouriser in a zip lock bag filled with intake cleaner. Put into an ultrasonic bath = spotless and running strong another 100k km later.
I’ve got a 16 reg transit works van,61k on the clock, gets serviced every year and it’s never missed a beat, gets a blast on the motorway at least once a week, never had a issue
And this is why I do my own maintenance as garages either don't know how to fix the cars they sell or don't give a damn, or more likely, want to rip off unsuspecting punters by unnecessarily putting in new parts. My mother thought she heard a scraping noise from a wheel and brought her car to a local garage last year when I had covid and couldn't help. They told her the noise from her rear wheel was a bearing. I told her to leave it until I was better so I could have a look at it. So I did and was it the bearing???? No it was the dust shield at the back of the brake caliper that was rubbing on the disc. I pushed it back into shape and hey presto, noise gone. Saved her the 300 quid they wanted for a new bearing fitted......which in itself was a monumental rip off.
i know nothing about modern engines and am not mechanically minded at all, but I have to say having watched a few of these videos, you're a genius.
Many thanks for showing us....we are blessed! Working in the rain too..
My pleasure
Can you imagine the youth of today climbing under a van in the rain with no complaints..................................where do we go when mechanics like you retire
Second video I've watched, had to sub and like. Certainly seems very knowledgeable and honest, these are the kind of mechanics we need, not rip off dealers.
Welcome aboard
We had similar issues with our work transit a few years back. Finding someone like yourself who actually understands the system, is like finding a needle in a haystack. When speaking to some of the so called 'specialists' who my boss took it to, it seemed like I understood the system far better than they did.
That's a shame. I think my videos are raising awareness and making a difference so I'm surprised I see this same story almost every day
Ye I agree my transit custom kept going back to garage because of dpf issue they just did a forced regen and send me on my way, turns out the forced regens were never completing only getting to 60% and stopping. So they got it mapped out as they didn't know what the problem was. Looking at your videos I think it could of been a vaporizer. If only I had found your videos sooner
@ORileysAutos they certainly are pal. Your videos make diagnostics even more exciting. Fixed countless dpf faults thanks to you I know exactly what data pids to look at and analyse. Number 1 rule. Blocked dpf = underlying issue, everytime Keep em coming
It’s so annoying when you go to someone for help, but it turns out you’re the smartest in the room 😅
To me I it seems that the other part of the problem is that the cars often are driven relatively short distances and much in city traffic so that they never get into the temperatures and the time+rpm needed for a proper automatic regen.
I’m not for one second implying I’m a great mechanic but this is basic stuff isn’t it. It’s the same around where I am. All they want to do is get it out of the door quickly and get on with discs and pads. No one is prepared to diagnose anything. It’s the reason that we all have a bad name. Extremely frustrating
Everything is easy when you know how

Proper mechanic. Great to watch. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing.

It seems to be the reason for most breakdowns these days with people having problems with the Particulate Filter system and it's sensors.
I few years ago looking around for a family car I bumped into an old school friend at a car sales place, he now has his own garage and was looking for a small car for his wife, he told me that there was a ford C-Max at the back that had been sold a few times but returned, he told me it should be £4,000 but they will take £1,000 sold as seen.
What wrong with it was that it had a block EGR (exhaust gas recycling) valve, I asked my friend how easy was it to repair, the official way is about at £1,000, the unofficial is £10.
So I paid the garage £1,000 and my friend and I fitted a thick blanking plate to the EGR valve and he turned the amber check engine light off and it ran perfectly and drove well for a car with only 55,000 miles on the clock, I put it through it's MOT and got told by the testing station that it's emissions levels where lower than standard.
When it got to 125,000 miles, a neighbour offer me a £1,000 when I mentioned I was thinking of getting a newer car, so sold it him a few weeks later the turbo went on it so we when to the scrap yard and found an identical one off a very low mileage Mondeo and helped him to fit it, the C-Max is now up to 150,000, and still running well and passing it's MOT.
what year was the C-Max ?
@@-marcel 06
I had a 07 Cmax 150K and was still going strong when I got rid of it, had it from 3k superb car.
A very interesting video for me as i gave up the spanners 30 years ago! I drive a Euro3 Volvo D5 so it has no DPF etc, It was great to learn about cleaning out a DPF and this guy is very knowledgeable and knows what he is doing! 👌
Thanks for sharing!
My boss, an undertaker, had a Vauxhall Vivaro with the same issue. It came back after an MOT and would not go over 30 mph. It had done 79000 miles, and only ever lightly loaded. The garage said it would cost £1300 to fix, so he got rid of it and bought a Mercedes van instead. Modern diesels, with so many of these gadgets fitted, are a damn nuisance.
Merc are bo better, they just delete it out when It goes wrong
you certainly know your stuff nice to see a decent mechanic

You know your stuff mate and shame a lot of these kid on specialists.
You know a mechanic knows his stuff when he has a mobile service.
I recently changed my vaporiser on my MK8 Transit 2.2 RWD thanks to your videos. It was really easy. My OBDII tool didn't have an option to prime the vaporiser thought, but it`s done a few regen`s whilst driving since so I know it`s working. Differential pressure is around 7 at idle now.
Glad I could help. RWD is easier than these
Thankyou for your video's I have learned such a lot that when I am asked to look at a dpf I have more confidence, talking to other garages they don't have a clue TBH like I used to be before you I have watched them all, time well spent
You got this!
I’m 6 months into a limp mode / blocked DPF problem on a 2013 Ford Transit and over £2k with two different garages, new glow plugs, new DPF and still in limp mode. Vapouriser being fitted today so will be £2500 spent, I’ve spent the whole value of the van and no faith it’ll solve it. Thousands of people will be getting ripped off with DPF issues who cannot afford these bills.
Hopefully my channel saves people money from unnecessary repairs
Good repair Jimmy, didn't look like that dpf had been off to me. So many cowboys in the trade now, bet they reset the codes and tried to force a regen and sent it back out.
Cheers for the upload mate.
Thanks 👍
Finally a video showing how to fix this! Now, could you come over to the states and fix our two transits for us?
Loving your videos thanks.
Im nearly afraid to buy a new diesel car with all of this emissions lark that goes wrong... Im so close to ordering a new vrs Octavia diesel but dont want a life of dash lights 😂
Greetings from Ireland
New petrols can have petrol particulate filters..... higher temps and fewer particulates on those mean fewer issues but nonetheless, issues are unknown as it's relatively new still.
Touchwood got 65 reg Euro 6 1.5 dci dacia logan engine... 90000 miles of motoring no issues yet on the Dpf side..... Had a Renault kangoo 1.5 dci engine work van went to 180 000 miles before the Dpf issue cropped in

I travelled 300 mile round trip on Monday to see Jimmy
I didn’t waste money by going to other garages locally to me..
Local garages would have probably parked your car/van for a week or two before telling you they can't fix it or telling you they have fixed and 1 mile down the road the problem reappears
You do know what you are doing.
Very clever and honest

Hero doing an evil job in the rain...
You should drop one in an ultrasonic cleaner to see if it does anything. Be interesting video and I think we would all love to see that one. Maybe do one off the van not heated up, and one after you get the torch on it.

Jimmy are you smashing that Blonde Bird at the end of DA video
Fscinating! Never watched your videos before, but have been searching for information on DPFs and diesel engines, as I've been looking at a Citroen Berlingo automatic, that only comes with their diesel engine. I barely drive 3,000-4,000 miles per year (recently retired), much of which is urban - I do very few long, hard drives. Looking at this video makes me think I probably shouldn't go near a diesel car!
Funny enough I watched a video a while back when a question was asked to a Mechanic 'should I get a diesel or petrol vehicle' his reply was 'low miles and short runs, petrol...high miles and long runs, diesel' This made sense to me.
My 30 year Old camper is a diesel, no fancy electronics, DPF or EGR valve and in five years I've had no engine issues.
I don't do High mileage 1200 miles per year on average and 95% of the time, no more than a 5 mile round trips; the other 5% could be hundreds of miles once or twice a year.
I don't think that would work Good for a modern diesel but then again, it could be a case of 18000 miles of motoring like this before a modern diesel would show signs of problems, that would be 15 years of motoring for me.
As long as the diesel engine and components were in Good shape to begin with, I could be fine with a newer diesel.
I owned an automatic once, I prefer manual for many reasons.
Why the need for an automatic David if you don't mind me asking.
@@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN just getting to your comment - have been away. I want to switch to auto after a lifetime of manual gears just for the simplicity, especially in traffic. I've driven a couple of friends' auto cars and it's like night and day. In the past, I've even developed hip issues from driving my manual every day in commuter traffic - to the point that I changed my work hours to 6 am start and 3 pm finish, just to avoid the stop-start.
@@davidrowe8747 No worries about the late reply David. Yes I see your point, automatics are great in heavy congested traffic situations.
I did a ranger a few years ago, same engine, lads in the garage I started in, fully loaded the parts cannon and reset all adaptations and let it back out for a few more weeks, I had a look at it and glow plug faults, replace them and test drove for a few days noticed the engine temp wouldn’t go over 65 degrees, stat was staying slightly open not letting the engine up to temp to do a regeneration,
Replaced the stat and never seen it again after that

I sure do wish you was here in Inverness to do mine as mine blocked up as a machanic back home in Bradford fitted a cheap £16 crank sensor and sent me on my way with the lights on saying it would be fine, just bought and fitted a proper sensor from vauxhall at £182 and all the lights went out immediately so just ordered a DPF from a company down Leicester but sure wish you was here
Well done Mr 😎
How good is it that the Geniuses invented something that catches all the bad stuff, then burn the bad stuff back out again. And when the bad stuff cant be burnt, we put more bad stuff in there, then burn that bad stuff out....all back into the atmosphere. 20 years ive been a mechanic and Ive never gotten over how stupid the DPF and EGR system is.
Excellent video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Brilliant work pal

I'm glad the HDI Berlingo I used to have was last of the pre DPF models.
Great videos once again. I have been told by a van mechanic that the Dpf filter only really lasts 100k and then they really need to be changed as they have done their work. Have you ever come across this?
Early DPFs did have a replacement period given by the manufacturer, newer ones don’t really, improvements have been made… 🙂
Depends but at some point, yes, the ash buildup that can't be burnt off remains stuck and needs to be cleaned out, or DPF replaced.
It used to be the case but now as long as the DPF has not overheated and the filter inside not melted it will survive several cleans and therefore no longer needs replacing after 100k or 150k (my VW TDI has a 150k DPF replacement recommendation or sooner if the ash content is at a certain saturation level).
No reason why a periodically cleaned DPF should not last the life of the car / van if well maintained. Like all parts, age can cause wear and tear and reduced efficiency and replacement may be the only option in such cases.
100k........thats all most modern cars are built for now. Built in obsolescence to perpetuate cyclical consumption whilst simultaneously appeasing the carbon neutral hypocrites 🤮🤢🤯
Thanks for all the helpful videos Jimmy learnt alot so far, iv just cleaned the dpf on our 2010 Volvo v50 2.0D with the launch cleaning fluid and the pressure values dropped all the way down to around 8mb on tick over and 80 @ 3k rpm but after driving 5 miles its blocked up again. The was excessive amount of diesel gone into the oil so im thinking the injectors might be the problem? It doesnt smoke at all Only stored faults are p242f trap blocked and p2452 for pressure signal but the pressure sensors working correctly. As are temp sensors etc.
The reason why this keeps happening is because mechanics don't actually know how cars operate.
They don't understand how each component interacts with the next so they just load the parts cannon because it's not their money.
Hopefully all will soon enough see these videos
@@ORileysAutoslet’s just hope Jimmy that they don’t watch them within your business catchment area 😂
@@ORileysAutos Agreed. I've moved and have had to try THREE different garages for various fixes
1. HP power steering replacement (they ordered the wrong part initially but still charged me for the wrong part and the correct one)
2. P0299 which the garage recommended turbo rebuild (didn't fix the problem AND they never replaced the turbo gaskets so now have an exhaust leak)
3. An AC recharge but they never checked if there were leaks in the system before filling the car up and charging me.
Simple issues that could have all been avoided if each of the three mechanics just took a little pride in their work the way that you clearly do.
I hope you're making a good living off your work because you deserve it.

I asked (a while ago) - what you thought regarding Chipping a Mk8 21 plate 130PS Transit Crew Cab Tipper to get more power, you replied to say - better to have it Professionally Mapped - Without hold you responsible in any way what so ever, - would Mapping be detrimental to the engines life span at all ?.
We are looking to have a New Transit soon but having difficulty getting a 170PS with the Vehicle Configuration we need at a viable price - but we can get a 130PS to our Vehicle Configuration Spec- So just considering having a New Vehicle Mapped to 170PS or more if not detrimental to the longevity of the Engine.

Fab work
Had the same problem with my ford ranger and i diagnosed it with a cheap mobile phone scanner. How 3 garages missed it ill never known
I fixed my DPF with a mason hammer and a welder.. Seems to be working ok now..
From. What you are saying all the garages need to get up to speed with this proses on DPF s they need to spent the money on the equipment and Educate them selfs on how DPF work ,old jimmy
That's the goal of my channel to make people aware how they work
My older shape 2014 transit I bought off a fleet operator who amazingly supplied Aldi and had their own fleet , the transit was for fixing the scania lorries , anyway it’d had loads spent, new turbo dpf and all sorts and 5 mins after buying it the elm came on 🤣
Took it to a guy who ran a fleet of transits and he checked the glow plugs and said one’s down and these need all the glow plugs to work or it won’t regenerate and the egr was not working due to one thing or another so I got a new glow plug and egr fitted and now it worked properly .
Moral of the story is find someone who knows their onions not couldn’t care less keep throwing parts at it and hope you go away
Subbed! Great channel 👍
Thanks for the sub!

If the vaporiser isnt blocked whats the best way of testing the glowplug in it
Doesn’t seem like they train mechanics to diagnose and fix anymore like this, they just train part replacers. Best off getting chummy with a proper mechanic and paying them cash on the side. They tend to have good connections so you can get things like ‘part worn’ tired for half the price too. (Usually only 50 miles on them where they’ve been moved from shipment to a fleet base where tires are changed to new as their policy)
This is a simple check and takes 2 minutes to diagnose on a Transit, simply put a mitivac onto the fuel hose that feeds the vaporizer and if it draws a vacuum you know its faulty
Geez, ford still uses fifth injector regeneration strategy ? we've mocked their engineers for a full straight day for making euro 6 out of euro 3 by simply burning fuel like crazy at customer expense and they still didn't learn :/
for dpf issues:
1. make sure to use ACEA C2 / C3 / C4 engine oil, that will drastically extend the life of DPF by not producing sulphur ash - however a off vehicle clean would clean it up.
2. make sure that thermostats are in order - to low coolant / oil temp may prevent ECU from triggering regeneration AT ALL.
3. make sure your pressure / temp sensors on dpf are in order - regeneration requires bare minimum of 620C, if ECU thinks that temp is 640C but in reality it's 600, there will be no regeneration what so ever.
4. make sure your injectors are clean, the injector seals are not leaking, common rail pressure is in order - that will give you bad spray and very smoky output clogging up dfp quickly
5. make sure that your air intake charge pipes are not leaking and relates sensors (maf / map) measure correctly as this will give smoky output clogging up dfp quickly
Now if you reeeeeaaaaalllllyyy feel in the mood for crazy vehicle mods, you can buy your self exhaust insulating glass-fibre tape and insulate exhaust manifold + turbo + piping to dpf along with dpf. On normal driving that shall increase dpf temp by 30 - 70C lowering ECU need to use fuel to boost the exhaust temp. Also make sure that all the exhaust joints are not leaking any fumes (even the turbo VNT / waste gate arm can exhaust leak pressure) - that pressure drop will cost you dpf temp making ecu squirt even more fuel to heat up the dpf.
Why is this comment not at the top, hats off to you sir
@@alexbrown1050 Cheers buddy. if that ended up at the top ford would knock on YT door to take it down 😉
But hey, if it will make you day any better - Ford UK gives significant incentives to their engineers and managers to buy fords (so they beta test the cars and report directly to them rather than raising stick) and when we were trying to negotiate an agreement with ford for giving us tools to tinker with their ECU because we were buying their engines on pallets - ALL of their engineers showed up to the meeting in bmw’s (and I thrown that in their face as well). Actually the whole meeting was a train wreck where they were mocking us (their customers) and we just gave up with politeness and started to piss all over their engineering skills and trust in their own work.
Only worse meeting I had was with audi about their ecu, but now I know why they didn’t want us to access their ecu’s internals (cough … diesel gate … cough)
This is amazing, nice to see one take pride in their work, how much does this cost and would you come to Cardiff, I have the exact same van
Only Bedfordshire
I’ve got a y reg ford transit and got exactly the same problem
Busy busy busy 😂
Bloody dpf, egr, ad blue is slowly killing diesel and some of the are a absolute nightmare to work on aswell especially if the dpf is arounf the back of the engine.
All coming to petrol cars now too
These have been mandatory since 2016
"The exhaust line heats up fairly quickly, which allows the pollution particles to be carbonised without the need for regeneration cycles, as petrol engines heat up more quickly than diesel engines. This allows the GPF to operate completely autonomously, without any maintenance or risk of clogging."
Great content mate, can I ask you what is that diagnostic tool you use? I look to purchase Icar soft ones, but yours looks like it's a software on tablet which I like better.
Cheers and keep up the good work.

All I know about these dpf engines is the engine oil is usually synthetic oil and is important you have correct engine oil.

Not many people in the auto mechanic world who know what they're doing any more, most of the "specialists" are ex-dealership technicians who've never worked on anything less than 5 years old, and where serious problems got shipped out to external contractors, all they're taught is to plug in a diagnostic machine, follow a set of instructions and replace a predefined list of parts.
I was trying to get coil springs replaced on my car recently, I must of called 8 difference garages, most wouldn't quote and two told me they didn't have the right equipment for the job. I've seen people do it on RUclips, with nothing but a trolley jack and a 15mm socket.............. Seems like nobody wants to do the heavy/tough/dirty jobs any more.
Any “garage” that can’t diagnose that fault first time round, shouldn’t be taking money from people.
Changed car now but if the DPF in a transit is similar to that of a VW this could have saved me thousands of pounds.
