Hounslow too, everyone for miles around knows that Hounslow Heath Car Boot has been an outlet for stolen power tools for years. I think they've finally banned the sale of them, how successful that is I don't know as I don't go there because I wouldn't be prepared to leave my car there unattended, that's how bad it is.
My van got robbed in BQ car park at 1pm , had 2 alarms go off, it didn't stop them. Lost over 2k in tools, police didn't even attend. After loosing tools for a 3rd time I gave up been a joiner. Sooner or later people will moan that you can't get a quality trades person, it's because we've just had enough. If someone stole the police officer's uniforms and they couldn't work, I bet the police would react straight away .
We had similar titanium guards fitted to our transit. The scum bags just tried to ripped the side off the van behind the door after they trashed the door trying to get in. They never did get into the van, but the van is now an insurance write off. We now have a new van with no mods so they can get in as easy as they like. We have however designed a large tool box that holds the tools in the van which is impenetrable. This means they drill the hole to get in but cannot access the tool box inside, they then get fed up trying to access the tool box and leave. We are then left with just a small hole in the door to deal with.
We have had numerous Vito's broken into mainly in Premier Inn car parks in London, makes no difference if it's reinforced they will cut away at the door regardless. We have deadlocks fitted to all doors and they still bend the door or force the deadlock. A better visual deterrent is needed in most cases with microwave alarms as per the old 90's type alarm systems.
I have a campervan and have most of the usual security devices but a very useful one, I have bought is the hyfive driveway alarm. a pir and reciever unit as a pair, only costs £14.99 from Amazon. I have bought 3 one pir for in the garage solely and one in the cab and one in the back of my van, waiting to detect movement. The three receiver units are placed around the house wherever I am and if they go off, I know my property is being broken into and i can immediately react. I also take them with me when I go away anywhere and park the van in range, to again detect and to immediately react to entry. I would have thought a tradesman, inside a house and the van being outside is another perfect use for the device.
Over the years I've collected two of every power and hand tool I own. One half left in my secure shed at home and the rest in my van, so my business isn't affected.
Absolutely brilliant, without people like you Jeff where would we be ? Ingenuity personified. Britain needs these sort of people more now than ever before, great clip !!! Well done.
Vans need to come with this security as standard from the factory. Too many hard working tradespeople are losing their tools due to poorly designed security
Excellent repair, so sad that the new Ford Transit is susceptible to break in. The engineering and development into the production of your shield is well thought out. You are an engineer who has taken time to solve a particular problem. First class.
Have you thought about lazer etching the eternal plate, with the word custom, make it look like it was fitted by the manufacturer. Repair and upgrade is excellent.
I’ve fitted your plates and the instructions were very thorough definitely recommended. As a minimum fit deadlocks and external stainless plates or it will happen it’s just a matter of time!!
Iv got a huge 18 plate transit and I had exactly the same … they were in and out in 5 mins this was in Chiswick… van got recovered as easy to steal now as door was compromised, the insurance company had the van for three weeks and couldn’t get anyone to repair the door as there wasn’t enough money in the job so I took my van back and spent £1200 having the armour plates put on front and rear .
Ford redesigned the Transit, a lot of good ideas like the low height to ensure it'll go into car parks. You'd have thought they'd have made it impossible to break into yet here's exactly the same problem in exactly the same place.
Doesn't seem to have changed much since 2000. My Ford van got broken in without much a do. It had 'high security' locks fitted but way too much play. Best solution. Don't have a side door. But a lock is only as good as its weakest point. Maybe an armoured van is required.
excellent design on that internal piece especially. My only concern as a van owner would be that, as soon as a thief sees all the extra locks, they just instantly know there is something worth stealing in there, if it were me, I would simply add windows to it and some camper van decals, they wont be interested then, and at worst, youve got to replace a piece of glass instead of a whole sliding door
I take it Ford never listened to how bad the last transit was for getting broken into. If he had gone through his insurance it wouldn’t surprise me if they would of written the van off with the wait time for a new door
Poor guy, money lost forever. If you are going to drop 30-40K on a new van the manufacturer should be taking this problem far more serious. Nice work Sussex Installations
A determined thief will get in another way, great job on the side door, I think the lock on the rear door lock is not good enough though the rear door lock on the sprinter is far superior.
Toad used to do a smoke discharge system years ago Ive thought that a smoke system with a very loud siren and strobe to create a visual and aural overload might help
i think its a lovely job but if you make the easiest way to get in difficult....they will use more force on the door in another place making it more likely to destroy the whole door. love your design
I think you should fit windows on the van and take your tools out if they can see its not worth their time they may leave it alone. Failing that i imagine a smashed window is a cheaper repair compared to a hole cut in your door. When i stayed away at Portsmouth i came outtosee someone had their rear quarter panel cut and peeled open like a tin of sardines.

Top quality of work as always. Van Manufacturers should have these features as standard, or at least have them as an upgrade. Given how much we pay for these vans, they are far too easy to break into.
How about you get a decent security system fitted when it's built. Tje insurance comapnies should force manufacturers to fix glaring weak spots ,everyone knows the transit is exposed to this type of break in. Why should the police have to pick up the fraud of the manufacturers??
@@leeward4960 1st line of defence would be to fit our side door internal shield as that is 6mm thick in the most vulnerable area on this new Custom van. The external shield is more aimed at repair.

But if the marked tools are discovered on any body except the owners they will need to explain where they got them legally and may end up in court.

The one I drive mostly had the clutch go at 32,000 miles! Ive never burnt a clutch out in 30+ yrs of driving. I could go on, but I want to mention the wet belt. A rubber toothed belt inside the engine! A belt made of rubber, sitting in hot oil doing 1,000's or r.p.m. Im sure they'll tell you it's oil proof. But theyve been out a while now, people are increasingly reporting the belts failing well before their service schedule. This is resulting in massively expensive internal engine repairs. Even if it does hold out, till just 80,000, you have to strip down the front body and engine to replace! If you do buy one, you need to purchase a lot of extra security, and sell it on at 50k. Independent tests have shown that due to increased service schedules, parts quality and factoring in fuel costs, its cheaper to buy a Sprinter. Look at the pro's, couriers, hardest working vans out there, Sprinters. I used to love the Transit, from the last of the mk2, with the first 2 litre di engine. Their only issue was rust, which you could stay on top of, with a bit of extra maintenance. Whilst Merc standards have also dropped, they dont trade on their name as much as Ford do.
