Re: scholarships
There are the two types: need based and merit based. A faculty member may be aware of a merit scholarship, especially if they were on an admissions committee. It is extremely unlikely that they would know of a need based scholarship, as that is protected info and only those who need to know or to whom the student self discloses would know that.
source: I am an academic administrator at a top tier university (although I’m not in law) and I sit on the committee that determines merit awards for my program.
Would need based scholarships be protected under FERPA?
@@bestpoubelle5332 Yep, as I understand it ALL financial records, including any need based scholarships are protected under FERPA. There are a few exceptions about who is allowed to know the information for tax reasons (like if a student is still a parent's dependent, for example), but it would be very weird, and likely against the law, for scholarship disbursement to be common knowledge in a department. (But again, not a lawyer, and it's been a while since I looked at the exact specifics of FERPA)
@@amtheelder2961 That makes a lot of sense!
I came to this channel from the Bussy video have been binge watching everything. You're one smart cookie! Sarcastic too...which is my favorite part.

samesies!!!
Me toooooo
Same here as well.
Same 🤣
Season 15 episode 9 where william Lewis is acting as his own defense counsel and cross examining Olivia about when he took her hostage. I want to see what your reaction would be to his “questioning style.”
OMG YES
That's what I wanted to say!
Seeing these episodes through the eyes of a lawyer, who is NOT my lawyer, is eye-opening. I'm dying to see a reaction to _My Cousin Vinny_ for the mere fact I feel as if it would provide laughs for all involved.
plllleeeeeaaaasssseee do my cousin vinny :D
Omggg yes PLEEASEEE!!
@@inventedcool1076 as someone who has done jury duty a few times my cousin Vinny is probably the most accurate portrayal of a court room in a film/tv show
Check out "Legal Eagle" about My cousin Vinny.
Someone mentioned a possible review of the Good Wife and I’ll second that. There was an episode where a massage therapist walked into their office seeking representation for a rape allegation against a well-known cultural figure. There was so much back and forth between the partners about the damage to the firms reputation if they lost the case that the client ended up walking out. I’d like to hear your input on what law firms face when taking on various clients.
I think that was the good fight-same universe different show.
Actually wait… You were right: it’s this episode: www.imdb.com/title/tt1632300/?back=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fsearch%3Fclient%3Dsafari%26as_qdr%3Dall%26as_occt%3Dany%26safe%3Dactive%26as_q%3Dmassage+therapist+the+good+fight%26channel%3Daplab%26source%3Da-app1%26hl%3Den
I was actually thinking about the good fight, the episode where one of the partners who passed away was exposed to have been a Weinstein type and the entire episode they’re deciding what to do with one of his victims that wants to go public, with very similar infighting that seems like totally what would happen but also would be totally very illegal to do like half of the things they were doing: www.goldderby.com/article/2019/powerful-the-good-fight-episode-sexual-assault/?back=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fsearch%3Fclient%3Dsafari%26as_qdr%3Dall%26as_occt%3Dany%26safe%3Dactive%26as_q%3Dthe%20good%20fight%20partner%20sexual%20harassment%26channel%3Daplab%26source%3Da-app1%26hl%3Den
They do it, just not in front of the client.
I think they want them to walk around because it's "boring" if they just stand still. But good acting can adapt around standing still.
Boston Legal!
@@lkf8799 one of my faves!! Candace Bergen 💗 and James Spader 💗 were the best!!
I have never seen this tv show in my life. I’m just here for the Leeja craic.
How have you never seen Law and Order? I believe there's this trivia about cable TV that this is one show that you can find somewhere on the dial almost no matter WHEN you tune in. Do you live outside North America?
@@myragroenewegen5426 I live in Ireland.
I’m not sure if anyone has suggested it, but I think you NEED to see episode 3 season 14 where the new ADA convinces a guy to choke him with a belt while being questioned.
What is this show even
That would be funny af
Omfg Barba was amazing in that episode, I died 😂
@@jjcarey77 IT WAS HAHAHA I felt so bad for laughing but come on it’s such a ridiculous scene
It’s funny, I went to school with a couple of ppl who moved on to more “prestigious” schools and they are such miserable human beings as we have aged. I’ve never met ppl who could have so much but be so hollow.
RE: one professor derailing her career - There may be things that he could threaten, which would call for expulsion. Depending on the timing, if the school was likely to act on a plagiarism/cheating accusation from a "trusted faculty member," that could be enough. I know someone who, decades ago, was threatened that way. She plead her case - without accusing the faculty member, because she wouldn't have been believed - and convinced the dean to "let her" take a failing grade and retake the class.
Never watched an episode of that show, but I will watch every episode of "Leeja & Order"
edit: all your thumbnails are the best
I think the point of him "checking every diversity box" is that he's also aware it's on a hella technicality. I would hope that's what the writers intended
Ugh see I really wasn’t sure, I hope so too
I am a paralegal. I beat the absolute tar out of a lawyer from Osgoode hall Law school (Canada's top law school) in a litigation. I went to paralegal school because I couldn't afford law school. There area ton of snobbish jerks in law. Love your channel!
I LOVE the SVU reactions! I think anyone who watches and doesn't expect the over the top dramatics showed up for the wrong viewing experience 🤣🤣🤣
Not Leeja making me consider going to law school 😂 your channel is going to blow up! Your content is ❤️🔥
Idk who said that you picked a bad episode but as a fan of Law & Order, that episode you picked last time is one of the highest rated, most talked about lol. I am excited to see you cover a more recent episode now though!
There are so many good trial scenes that seem more legally accurate in early seasons of law and order! I wish you would make a video review of one of those. Ever since Carisi became the ADA for SVU the legal drama aspect of the show has taken a nosedive in quality and almost seems to have been cut out of the show almost entirely :(
I love these videos! Have you thought about doing a video of "10 laws people should know" that would be so helpful!!
Oooo good idea!!
I enjoyed watching this addition, and good point about the episode revolving around male guilt instead of the actual victims
My abuser has been sitting in jail waiting for trial for nearly 2 1/2 years. It’s so hard mentally but I’m pushing through
I'm glad you left that Judge's speech in at the end. It was such a good part!
Agreed!
I think the “checks the box” he was talking about has to do with him being gay in real life.. and im pretty sure he said he doesn’t want to “play straight” for roles anymore.. (i could be wrong.. but im like 98% sure he said that in an interview)
That's exactly it; the character, much like Wentworth Miller in his real, is gay, which is where the quote meets its truth.
Yeah, I thought the same thing.
I'm glad he made that stand. Got kinda tired of seeing him play straight dudes just because hot white muscular man.
It's called being an actor.....you're not there to play yourself......
Yes, the character was gay
Yeah but that’s one box not “every diversity box” lol that would be like a trans poc non-straight disabled neurodivergent and poor woman probably??
Come through Leeja you bringing me more life ever since I found you through the bussy review.
Also, collab when?
Re: classism(?) of scholarship vs non-scholarship students, I went to a private university for undergrad and a public university for grad school. The public school students really couldn't care less if you were on scholarship or not, since being a public school we had a mixed bag of how people were paying for tuition and chances were everyone had some kind of financial aid. The private school students didn't necessarily........ bully scholarship students, but there was definitely a divide of mentality between students who were on scholarship or work-study and were painfully aware of tuition vs students whose parents were able to wholesale afford tuition and didn't think about money. You noticed it a LOT with Pan-Hellenic sorority/fraternity students and business majors who couldn't understand why you weren't going on a semester study abroad, the tuition is only $12,000, or why you couldn't join KKG, the yearly dues were only $1400, or why didn't you get the most recent shirt to go with the other 6 the fraternity ordered this semester, it's only $85 for a polo. Like I said, no outright insults, but the kind of "oh, you're *poor*" realization was actually a thing.
Side note: I'd recommend an SVU episode, but the only one I really remember is "Loss" due to (spoilers) Alex leaving for Witness Protection and Olivia all but sobbing as Alex confesses she doesn't know if she'll ever come back. The scene stuck with me, but the rest of the episode could be crap, tbh, lol.
Loved this. I was fully traumatized by the Kavanaugh hearings. Thanks for acknowledging this
YUP!!
Yes! I came here to make the same comment. Please get on your high horse anytime 😄
I am younger than kavanaugh. At that time, he was fed a steady diet of John Hughes movies that presented his behavior as acceptable - see “Sixteen Candles” and the hero of the film handing his drunk girlfriend off to another man. Had Kavanaugh respected Dr. Ford’s testimony and experience and provided some tangible comments on why that behavior is wrong - I would have felt less disturbed about his confirmation. Nothing justifies his actions but an acknowledgment that our culture is screwed up would have been the right thing to do. I can’t say forgive b/c that is Dr Ford’s place not mine.
I would love to see your reaction to Drop Dead Diva’s seemingly endless supply of smoking guns and random “flashback past life memories” in the middle of trials
most underrated channel on youtube
I’m genuinely gagged at how stunning your hair looks!
you are awesome. honestly i loved last one and love this one too. you are amazing and i enjoy everything you say and how you educate us. i really appreciate it. please dont ever stop doing this. and take breaks and stay healthy you are amazing
Leeja! I would love for you and @EmilyDBaker and @NatalieLawyerChick to do a women in law talk on each others channel, that would be so enlightening.
Love the channel, can't get enough of it. Disclaimer: See I like to comment on old shows slash posts as tho they were new cuz they're new to me, but only cuz am awake at four in the morning as the pain medication wears off early and have to wait three to four more hours for next dose. Comment: First and foremost you are aware it is a TV show and tho they are portraying people in other professions, their "calling" is to the stage lights vs, the courtroom or jurisprudence. Some words you may find helpful for understanding the Scene you're watching is for example, "Dramatic Effect," or "Director's or Editor's license", generally known as, "Creative License". Another perspective is, How, they film scenes. For example, depending on which actors are available, such as the actor portraying the Judge, he might be in very few scenes so they often film slash record all his parts, lines and or scenes separately. Yet when you are watching the episode in its entirety it appears as tho the judge is participating with all the other actors... in the courtroom setting. So , in short (hopefully), when you're watching actors on a (sound) stage portraying different parts, they rely primarily on dialogue from a script as well as help from a Director -their priority is in plot development vs. courtroom procedure and the law. Now I'm aware you know all this and am not telling you anything you do not already know, it was just seeing your responses to the actor's portrayals and the sequencing of events according to the teleplay. It got confusing, at times.
I have to constantly tell people that the judicial system in this country is not an episode of L&O, nothing gets wrapped up in a big box and tied up with a big fancy bow in just under an hour. It's maddening!
I dont typically comment on videos (because I'm lazy 💁♀️) but I really wanted to voice my support for your videos. I hope your channel starts to blow up
Maybe it was just the way it was clipped together or read quickly, but that excerpt from the New York State legal definition of incapacitance imply that it only applies when the substance or narcotic was administered to the person without the person’s consent? As in, if he was drugged by someone else, but not if say, he chose to become intoxicated himself?
Unrelated comment, but I love your sweater in this video a lot 🥰
Oh, I get it. This episode is actually about Brett Kavanaugh. The Wentworth Miller character is PJ or somebody like that. "Everybody who was there says it didn't happen."
You're incredible. Came for the Drag Race reaction, stayed for you.
Content I'd love to see (but may be alone):
- 12 Angry Men (1957 - CW: screaming toxic masculinity)
-Liar, Liar - (1997)
-A Veronica Mars episode or 10!
Ooo you’re not alone on 12 angry men or liar liar but Veronica Mars is new and BRILLIANT

Heheh hi thank you!!
You should definitely do the Law & Order SVU episode where the male exotic dancer got raped by 3 women. Haven’t seen it in years but I had sooooooo many questions about the legal system after watching it.
The bailiff be rugby tackling that lady when she casually walks up to the witness.
Would love your thoughts on Erin Brockovich - one of my favourite movies
She did a reaction video to it already, check her channel!
@@theallinwoman What?!?! OK I'm on it, thanks!!
amazing 👍! my I request an all Ice Tea video? "nothing but the Tea" I was wondering if you've ever heard of the show called, Fairly Legal? It was on USA in 2011. sesson one episode Five The Two Richards. It's about mediation. love your dance moves.
Oh, wow, I remember that show! I was sad when it got cancelled. (Just like I'm sad now that All Rise has been cancelled.)
Just to counteract all of the professors in the comments saying that they don't know who is on scholarship, with FSWS students, professors may know that a student receives some sort of financial aid. I had a work-study job under a professor in the theater department working tech. So he definitely knew. There are other jobs where the whole department knows- like people who do copies for the department and answer phones. And some of the people working in the library or IT end up getting know by a lot of professors because their job has them working with professors so often from all across the university. I've never encountered a time where a student was treated differently for it other than being asked to do something related to their job (like, "hey Tim, you work for ITS, can you get the projector to work?"). I did have a slightly harder time than my classmates in the class I took with the prof who oversaw my work study, but that was because the class was so related to the job I did that he knew I already should know certain things, or he taught me how to do something while I was at work so that I could run it during class (kinda like a TA).
Yaaas I LOVE Law and Order! Literally my favorite show growing up.
In terms of walking around I think that’s based less on court practice and more on common videography techniques. Very rarely will you have two characters in any show standing still and doing nothing while they talk. I think they know it’s wrong for real court but it’s common practice in videography.
Really excited to see you making more content. I enjoy ur perspective a lot so all these topics have been fab to hear about 😄
I have a suggestion for a react episode: The Wire 2x06 "All Prologue." The Wire is considered one of the most accurate depictions of Baltimore, how crime functions in general, and how it works especially in that city, but I have no idea if that realism remains true when it comes to the courts.
I will never forget the Episode of L&O where Kathy griffin, playing a LGBTQ activist, said that the "A" is for alley....whew CHILLAY. This show is baffling in its inability to be good.
I mean...there are people, even from the community, saying that outside of bad TV shows too....it's sad
Ooooooooof. How old is the episode? I know it used to be a more common - false - interpretation
Babs Duffy. Best character name ever!
Omg that guy on his high horse 🐎!! "The girls were brave..what would of been brave would of been to come forward blah blah!! I screamed shut up at the exact same time you did hahahaha!! I only watch law and order when I need a corny fix and few good laughs!! But now I don't wanna watch it anymore unless you agree to narrate them for now on...lol
Love your videos! The way you explain and speak is really easy to understand for people like me who have no idea about legal stuff but you break it down for a way that makes sense.
What if the alleged assailant is also intoxicated, do they lose the capacity to understand their actions? Or, what if the alleged assailant is the one that is intoxicated and the "victim" is sober, is the victim thus the actual assailant?
I remember when this show first aired. It was based on a real story that was recently in the headlines. Had the same result about a college dude who raped a girl but “had his whole life ahead of him”.
Those dance moves at the end🤘🏽
I would love to see you react to an episode of The Good Wife.

Our Lawful Good Capricorn Regent. You look great today!!

Wait but the attorney literally used her holding a glass with alcohol in one hand, so only using one hand to push him away, as an argument she was there voluntarily - proving she was under the influence just there??? But idk it's not that uncommon argument when you hear they dismiss a case simply because they don't wanna ruin a "young man's life" sadly...
Also in my country we only have a few numbers of private colleges/universities, and they are usually laughed about a lot bc like... you get accepted before even finishing your exams in HS, so they don't care too much about your final results as long as you pay? But regardless, this is my second bachelor atm, and first year was good, nothing too bad in regards to hierarchy etc (don't know what to call it tbh), but now in my second year you hear certain people who are VERY up there about "being educated" bla bla bla. In my country, university tuition is $70 per semester, and everyone can apply for student loans where once finished a degree, the loans can be turned into 40% scholarship. But there are some people who really believe they are better than others, suddenly their vocabulary is way different, like more "professional" in settings that don't make sense, and idk especially in my field of study, you need a certain amount of humility. Like you can't believe you're the best, know everything, no one can beat you. It's health care, you're supposed to provide help to mostly minorities, people of low-income and others who fall outside of society in one way or another. Having a university degree does not make you better than others.
That's one of the reasons I changed field of study, and when I first applied I did get accepted to an ivy league school, but I had recently visited some campuses (Harvard, MiT and other prestigious schools 🙄), and I just felt from the atmosphere that this was not for me. So I chose a state school (plus wth why would you pay 100s of thousands of dollars just for the bachelor's degree?) and I did like it more, but ofc some people really do live on the high of being in highet education... so I moved back to my home country to study instead (both to save money bc wth with the tuition... but also bc I hated how people acted) but sadly this second year so many people are suddenly so above everyone else... bc of field of study, we have to work with other professions etc, and so we have seminars etc to get to know the other fields and how they work in comparison, and it's the same thing - they think they know everything, show no form of willingness to listen to other's experiences and suggestions, despite that being the whole point of these seminars...
I'm so done with uni and the people there, because so many people don't see the privilege of being able to get higher education, nor the point in studying these specific fields; which is to help promote marginalized groups within health care... and it's just so frustrating and I hope one day when they start working, they get some kind of wake-up call. What school you go to, should not be the main focus. To me, the person I meet is more important than their education. If they can't treat me like someone who deserves equal respect, they look down on me etc, I wouldn't not want to have them as my caregivers. Like you need to be able to see the faults in society that so many people face, so you can help break those barriers! And thinking your approach or your ideas are always correct, is not a good thing in health care, especially. Like you need to be open for different approaches because everyone is different, but also be able to adjust and make yourself useful for the person you're supposed to help.
My dad's family are very much about higher education. My uncle has 2 PhD's, both from MiT, and he is so condescending to any education he doesn't see as valid. Especially like mine. It's a specialized nursing bachelor, so you focus on marginalized groups, as well as general health care. And he told me this Christmas actually, that the only people who chose to study any kind of nursing, was doing it simply because they couldn't get into med school.... which might be true to some, as there are only 2 or 3 universities in my country that offers educations where you become a licensed doctor, but in HS I was in a "science related" school, and about 70% of the people in my class wanted to become doctors. Rest of them wanted to go to law school or other higher types of educations. But here, if you don't get accepted into med school in Norway, most people move ti Poland for med school, because that's one of the few countries with cooperation with Norway in that field. So you can study in Poland, but do all kinds of internships, residency etc in Norwegian hospitals. And I think most the kids from HS did go on to study medicine...
and i chose my field because that's what i wanted to study. I had the grades to get into almost anything in Norway. (Including this really prestigious school my uncle went to, that I actually got accepted to for psychology when first applying, and he kept saying how "far off the rails" the school had become for offering such bullshit fields... like wtf). So i could have gotten into medicine, but I don't wanna work as a doctor? I love my field, and the more hands-on type of work it allows me to do. Education is so freaking elitist, even here where higher education is a lot more accessible than the US, and it annoys me so much. You'd think 99% of universities being state-schools, meaning basically free, the level of elitist mindset would be lower. But nope....
Anyways absolutely love your videos! And always laugh when watching any sort of crime show (i love them, but cmon, they are pretty far fetched, SVU is one of my favorites but most of the time the focus is on the personal lives of the people working, not the actual case...) because it is so unrealistic and so far from reality... but hey! Watching real life trials and police investigations would be sad, tragic and hopeless most of the time because the systems are so corrupt. Seen too many cases of white college boys getting away with rape etc, while the survivor is being slutshamed on stand... it's insane... so yeah I'd rather live in this dream world where police wants to truly help you, the defence in criminal cases are the bad guys... idk it sounds like a more justified world lmao!
I'm a college instructor. I have no clue who gets financial aid unless they tell me.
Please do Anna Nicole trial ❤️
