Just Collab already. People are clamoring for it. Video Idea: Get your hands on the Spain Contract (Inti’s tweet about not been able to talk about DR for FOUR YEARS got me intrigued) (My first language is Spanish so I could Help with translation) and then discuss it while Bussy puts Leeja en Drag! What a French Vanilla Fantasy would that be 🤩💕💕💕
Well, that's fair enough, but even if they do get the villain's edit, they still reap the benefits of everything the show brings, even if it comes with so many extra clauses and new rules. In the specific case however, you have to look at the fandom to know how truly damaging that is. Because the RPDR fan base is RABBID and now here is where the dabate should start, do the benefits outweigh the costs? I'm not sure if I'm being honest, maybe it's a case by case scenario.
The aftercare segment is because there has been a lot of controversy about reality show contestants’ mental health in the UK, with Love Island contestants committing suicide afterwards, so post-care has been improved by most channels.
Sorry for the novel, but I was on a Norwegian reality show, and our contracts had the same thing! We had mandatory meetings with a counselor twice during production--once at the beginning of filming, and once after we were eliminated/before we traveled home. I believe there was also an option to request a meeting with the counselor every two weeks if needed during our segments of time off while the crews switched over. There was a similar, very sad situation with one contestant from an earlier season, and I think that's why the mental health segment was there. However, the counselor was only available to us while we were still in Norway, at least in my experience (I never looked through the contract for an official answer). After going home, I struggled with readjustment a bit and emailed the production liaisons requesting another meeting with him. They responded that they'd check, then the conversation kinda fizzled and I never got my answer. Watching these videos makes me wonder if I should have looked over the contract again and checked! You'd think if it stated in the contract that he couldn't meet with us after we had left Norway, they would have given me that answer straight up...who knows!
I first came to this channel because I watched Bussy's video about the US contract and RUclips recommended that I watch Leeja's reaction to it. And I stayed here :) Quality content only! And yeah, that collab needs to happen! You both are amazing!
The BBC protocol would probably take precedence over the producer's arrangements as they are the broadcaster hiring said producer. Plus, the fact that they are a public corporation.
I don't know if you saw but Willam, one of the most famous queens from the show who was disqualified and constantly talks about the behind the scenes of the show, said in one of her Beatdown videos (where she reacted to Bussy's video) that when it comes to Drag Con certain queens can be forced to participate but have to pay for their own booth and WiFi.
Hi Leeja - The BBC has a huge policy document called Producer Guidelines (public / googleable). It's basically their internal laws. Any supplemental stuff in the UK contract is an attempt to align the US contract with that (in addition to local laws).
Would love to see a series about the things that people sign away to get what they want. Like to be Beyoncé’s dancer, eat extremely spicy wings, or even entering to “win a car” from a random mall kiosk
God, the talk about copyright and merch makes me really want some kind of Leeja pin/patch with "She's a lawyer, but not your lawyer" or something similar on it because holy crap the conversation starter of "Well I got recommended this Drag Race video, and now I'm fully neck-deep into a lawyer's fandom"
If you win Drag Race UK you get to make a web series which is exclusive to World of Wonder's paid streaming service. The reason there's no prize money is the BBC doesn't allow advertising and so they can't use sponsorships like they do in the US one. Production could front the prize money themselves (as other shows on the BBC do) but they choose not to.
I think that mental health and personal finance paragraph might've been added due to some reality TV stars dying by suicide in the past couple of years, so they're for sure covering their asses but in a different way that you imagined maybe
yeah esp on our reality tv like it was aired on ITV (not publicly funded, it has adverts and shit like a normal channel) but we had the jeremy kyle show which i think is similar to like the jerry springer show or whatever? but loads of people on that ended up killing theirselves so it got taken off the air, a few people who featured on love island and even the /host/ killed theirselves. the UK media is fucking b r u t a l and its been a massive issue recently with how horrible tv personalities can be treated by the media to the point they do something like that, so it absolutely will have been a cover in case something on the show got jumped on by the media
You have the right to negotiate your contract. I'm not sure how much wiggle room you can get if someone else is willing to sign all their rights away but it doesn't hurt to ask. Sounds like the U.K. has some better protections so that's good, but less pay so ... Not sure about that trade off. I think newer drag queens stand to gain more in exposure, etc. than established ones. Good luck.
The whole thing around signing over copyright for anything they do on the show makes me wonder, is WOW just not enforcing this when contestants come out with merch featuring catchphrases etc.? Or are they actually licensing that? Or, you mentioned you can't really copyright a phrase, so is that how they get around that?
I love to see Bussy knowing what she talking about. Like when I saw these videos I was shook but hearing you pretty much confirm that her words are accurate makes me love both of y'all more. We stan educated Queens 👏
I found this so interesting. Would love to know if other shows, particularly the Bachelor/Bachelorette have similar things in their contracts. Particularly after giving up the right to sue for deformation.
9:00 -ish: in some version of the contract that area also contains language about their right in particular to misrepresent you using your likeness! Like their notorious frankenquotes, which were the reason they started requiring the queens to look exactly the same in all their confessionals, because people noticed the queens changing clothes mid-sentence in the early seasons

She put the red lip on today though. Wowee. I can already tell this is gonna be a good one 😂 As a film student who was hired to do Business Affairs for a while at a small company, I sure wish I had these to watch back then.
I see my favourite lawyer has posted... I click and watch obviously!!! Leeja is so entertaining and calming at the same time! I always feel calm and happy watching these videos 😊
There's a very informative documentary called Hot Coffee (I would love your analysis of it) that has 3 parts, and one part covers binding arbitration in a case where the accused party ('allegedly' but very likely due to other very questionable/suspicious actions) "lost" criminal evidence that left only a civil option which was then blocked because the victim signed a contract (at 19) giving up their right to sue.
ahh i'm glad i found your channel through bussy! i finished uk 1 a couple of weeks ago and i didn't know why there weren't any cash prizes or sponsorships so this vid helped a lot! ❤
I’d definitely say Bimini really showed probably the best possible outcome for signing such a stringent contact. Even with signing away a good portion of privacy and rights to WOW with just exposure, not even prize packages, just exposure on the show they now have modeling contracts, photo shoots with Vogue Italy, their career is on a huge meteoric rise. I can definitely see how it definitely seems worth it to sign such a contract.
Fun fact regarding the "General Duty of Care" clause at 20:40 - Shows on the BBC need to have mental help advocates on site for contestants and actors, that explains what that clause means. However, there's a rumor going around that the latest season of Drag Race UK, season 3, apparently was so squished in time and stressful to everyone involved that the hired advocate said he would "never work with the Drag Race show again." I didn't fact check, but i heard this from Willam and Alaska, so it's prob wrong.
I didn't know comparative law was a thing, it does sound fascinating. how did you make me so interested in law all of a sudden. i'm an artist, not a lawyer.
20:30 this is a very important point. Because many reality show contestants have killed themselves in the UK, including a reality TV show host ( Caroline flack) there have been numerous enquiries etc. So I don't believe this was added to make them look better, but there isn't a network in the UK that could handle another suicide and survive it.
This somehow just popped up in my feed today, but I'm SO glad it did. It was really good information and advice, even if you aren't our lawyer, to read any contracts you sign very carefully. Also, I have to say you are absolutely beautiful.
In the UK the BBC doesn't have sponsorship to create/promote and transmit tv shows as they get funding from the public tv licensing fees compared to the US in which sponsorship on the whole is the norm therefore they can provide more financial prizes and gifts for their shows including RPDR in the States compared to the UK where the only prize is a tv series made using ru's producing company.
The BBC protocol would probably take precedence over the producer's arrangements as they are the broadcaster hiring said producer. Plus, the fact that they are a public corporation.
I've never clicked on a video so fast!! that Bussy collab would be a dream come true, maybe for the Australian version of drag race huh? and bless you for that sneeze haha
I think it’s unfortunate that the queens can’t get a cash prize but to be fair, I don’t think the cash prize they receive in any Iteration of the show is enough because being a drag performer in the era of drag race takes a lot of money. Also I didn’t realize leeja’s mn based! I am also a Minnesotan
Once again... super fascinating video, even though I don't understand half of it lol. OMG you learned what "Bussy" means, hahahaha. This is just so incredibly interesting to me, this contract business. Thanks for the very informative explanations! And by extension, thank you too Buddy Queen for the contact videos! Cheers 🥂
Hey Leeja Please do a video looking into what you can do at the contract signing point. Like, crossing out sections. I want that shirt, haha. But Leeja (not my lawyer) and Bussy are the legal power team this world needs. And we love two queens, during pride month, wearing matching glasses! Yes!
So happy you appeared in my recommended a few weeks ago, because I absolutely love you and your channel! One thing I’d like you to clarify, if you don’t mind-you talk about the right against invasion of privacy, specifically, if a cop enters your home without probable cause or a warrant, and you successfully argue that before the court, the court will bar any evidence found from being admissible at trial. However, it’s my understanding that there’s a caveat to this rule, in which if the police officer is able to successfully argue that you /allowed/ them into your home, then your claim against invasion of privacy is moot. Assuming this is correct, what is the burden for proving you didn’t /allow/ the officer into your home, rather the officer /forced/ their way in? It seems like this would become a nasty he-said, she-said? Thanks so much! 🥰
Really enjoying this video. :) Your point about DRUK bringing in a lot of views to the BBC: it absolutely does ... in the UK it has been shown on BBC Three, which used to be a broadcast channel but is currently a channel on BBC iPlayer (its online streaming service) due to past cutbacks. However, the BBC are now planning to bring BBC Three back as a broadcast channel (doubling its current budget), and DRUK is one of the shows that seemingly nudged them in that direction.
Can I just tell you what an awesome discovery your videos were? I'm sure RPDR tied it in to hit that algorithm sweet spot but yay! Subscribed and enjoy the hell out of the feed. :)
This topic was brought up this morning and I was wondering if you can give a little more insight regarding maybe some history behind it and how the jurisdiction was come about. The topic in question is regarding how the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Catholic foster care agency in Philadelphia and denied a same sex couple.
Hi Leeja! Unsolicited new video suggestion: Can you cover the environmental disaster that is the Line 3 tar sands pipeline currently being built by the Enbridge oil company in Minnesota? It was apparently started without the proper environmental evaluation, has been given absurd water drainage permissions, crossed tons of vulnerable waterways, AND goes through Tribal lands protected by a treaty signed by the US, but even with all of that it sounds like opposition (look up Stop Line 3 for more info) is hitting major roadblocks in the courts. I'm really curious how something as official as a treaty could fail to put a stop to this corporate bullshit, plus this is a really important issue and Indigenous land rights aren't really something I've seen anyone with a professional law background talk about before! Love you~
Hey Leeja! To answer your question why they chose the BBC, Michelle Visage (one of the judges on the show/producer) mentioned in a recent episode of the Table Manners Podcast that they had been trying to the the UK version of the show on the air for about 5 years across different channels and the only one that showed interest and was willing to do so was BBC3 (part of the BBC network - the audience tends to be younger).
I get the impression that the people involved believed that cancel culture would be sufficient and never actually pressed charges....possibly made a private arrangement? Which probably contributed to the backlash when that talkshow appearance happened, tbh.
My shirt is from my own line, Bad Concept Co. You can grab your own or some other sassy shirt at badconcept.co and use the code BCC15 for 15% off. K love u bye💕
I wonder where they did the contract and all for drag race then. If she’s saying California has a law against exclusivity clauses. And the one for drag race has one. Where did that all happen?? Because I thought WoW was in California.
you do win something. not cash but you win an online show. you get help to make an online show. now whether that's something someone would consider a prize is another thing.
As a freelance artist, giving away copyright like that is just terrifying. As an artist you charge someone up the ass if they want exclusive rights, and it’s even more if they want the copyright. It’s so gross seeing how reality tv production companies do crap like this to people.
The thing you said about not being able to sign away contitucional rights made me think about the McKamey Manor 40-page waiver and what people say about it. I'm not sure the whole thing is on-line, but if it's, you should do a breakdown of it. I always had a hunch that it wasn't legally binding, because it sounds like the type of thing that can be valid (just like I can't sign a paper saying I consent to being killed and then the person who kills me gets to avoid prosecution). Also, is there a difference between a contract and a waiver?
QUESTION: So, did Bendela find a loophole in the contract when she eliminated herself in all stars? She was tasked with sending a queen home, and she chose herself. Technically she sent a queen home and didn’t quit mid episode, like let’s say Adore.
Yes, interesting question! I wonder what was said / the aftermath. Were they warned, taken aside/threatened, asked to reconsider? Given the option to reshoot and edit it all out?. Dela made good tv doing it so maybe they went easy?? I don’t know what either have said (if they were allowed) after it 🤔
Great explanation on “expectation of privacy.” I am curious for your thoughts on expectations of privacy in regards to social media, email and digital technology?
Please do a video explaining how too hot to handle can “trick” their contestants into coming onto the show under the premise of another. It has to be in their contract somewhere that contestants don’t actually read??
Hey Leeja! Thank you so much for another amazing reaction with amazing legal insights!!!!!

Ugh so interesting and wild, I’ll def look into it and do a video!!!
Bless you! Fantastic video, and I need that shirt you're wearing

I'd be keen to know your thoughts on the friendlyjordies situation in Australia, and how it would be handled in the US.
Oh hell yes!
He's clever, does his research and funny as hell.
Thissssss

Thank you for watching!!
Love you~
Oh that’s an awesome idea, I’ll for sure look into it!!! Agreed it’s some real BS.
Drop the makeup routine sis, that skin looks incredible
Can you make a video about the sherry pie situation? I always wondered why that trash wasn't thrown in jail
🧐🧐🧐lemme take a look
I get the impression that the people involved believed that cancel culture would be sufficient and never actually pressed charges....possibly made a private arrangement? Which probably contributed to the backlash when that talkshow appearance happened, tbh.
Yas GIRL. So ready for this. Hi Leeja!

I love your videos!!! Can you do a video reacting to the Serial Mom trial. 😆
Oooo gotta look that one up 🧐🧐
As a freelance artist, giving away copyright like that is just terrifying.
🧐🧐🧐 I’ll have to take a look at it. Typically a waiver is a type of contract!
Ooh yes, the McKamey Manor contract would be an interesting (though disturbing) one to do.
@@LeejaMiller yes please!! I read it and it sounded extreme
Ok just looked into this and will definitely be doing a video this looks WILD
QUESTION:
So, did Bendela find a loophole in the contract when she eliminated herself in all stars?
She was tasked with sending a queen home, and she chose herself. Technically she sent a queen home and didn’t quit mid episode, like let’s say Adore.
Yes, interesting question! I wonder what was said / the aftermath. Were they warned, taken aside/threatened, asked to reconsider? Given the option to reshoot and edit it all out?. Dela made good tv doing it so maybe they went easy?? I don’t know what either have said (if they were allowed) after it 🤔
The British version does have a prize, they get the chance to come to America and make a TV series for WOW which they would be paid for.
Great explanation on “expectation of privacy.” I am curious for your thoughts on expectations of privacy in regards to social media, email and digital technology?
Love your content! Keep up the great work 😁
Eeee thank you! Thanks for watching!
I'm gonna need a roundtable RUclips channel show with Bussy, Leeja, and, idk, Jenna Marbles? talking thru the days news. Can we get that?
Please do a video explaining how too hot to handle can “trick” their contestants into coming onto the show under the premise of another. It has to be in their contract somewhere that contestants don’t actually read??
I BEEN WAITING ON THIS ONE
You’ve got a beautiful glow today, Leeja!
Thanks for another amazing video. 🖤🖤
Ps. Also, a ppl, who would love the collab. 😊
