Ah yes, the perfect game to market to children; one where everyone dies. You gotta instill that existential dread into children at an early age somehow
Earth bound would make a great show or anime or whatever. The story has aged pretty well but not many people even know this series exists and so they never get to hear this tragic tail. I think a show of some sorts would be an amazing way to tell the story and I can already picture the last final scenes with everyone watching just balling their eyes out lol.
Yes, the alien boss was freaky. Not sure if it was already mentioned, but the boss battle (5:00) showed creepy ghost-like faces PLUS the hidden silhouettes of a fetus. 1: a happy tale about a few children learning PSI and defending earth from gyiyg 2: a darker but still lighthearted tale of a group of teens going to 8 mystical locations and killing gyiyg/giygas 3: A heartbreaking story of a boy whose mother and brother who are dead. and having to fight against his killers and having to fight with his own twin brother.

I literally cried at the additional ending scene when (I think) Lucas said: "It looks like things will work out here, but what about your world? Will it be alright?" "Hey, other world. Be good to (player)!" It hits different considering what has happened this year.
Yes, I just couldn't stop crying while I read this part. I was diagnosed with major depression back in my youth and was forced to take a suspension 'cause I have suicidal thoughts and was acting it out at school. I was like super defensive and merely cry even I'm depressed, but man.
i just realized how much Earthbound beginnings inspired so much for shadow the hedgehog's backstory like Maria the mother = Maria the child Giygas = Shadow the hedgehog George the scientist = George Robotnik
Shadow cannot be giygas since giygas is pure evil and shadow isnt and also for mewtwo but The story of giegue , shadow and mewtwo can be the same since giegue is not pure evil because, Shadow was not evil too because of Maria and Mewtwo was not evil because of Amber . So yeah it's somewhat relatable ( but only in the case of giegue)
@gaganpreetsaini8504 Shadow isn't pure evil? He tried to blow up the planet in Adventure 2. And tried to conquer the universe... twice. (SonicX / Shadow the Hedgehog)
I didn’t realize Mother 3 was so dark. Like, Lucas had to go through his mother dying and after nearly escaping death his brother ran away causing his dad to start looking for him leaving Lucas to fend for himself. And then he has to watch his brother kill himself, wow.
When everyone is talking about Breath of the wild, I'm always like b#tch please, Lucas and Samus had it way worse with a lot more trauma to go with it.
I guess it does make sense, your mother died, your dad peaced out, and the only family you have left just killed themselves right in front of you... It's completely understandable for a young boy to hate the world after going through that, that's why when he told the dragon his feelings, the dragon destroyed the world, which is just what Lucas really wanted at that point in time
If there’s no care for spoilers, he completely skipped the part where your dad dives in front of a non lightning attack from claus and is majorly damaged, saving you
Though, in fairness, this was a game for kids. Kids are usually less familiar with writing cliches like than adults are, since they've absorbed a lot less media overall.
it's not supposed to be a shocking or unexpected reveal. most players will figure it out immediately and the rest piece it together as the game goes on. the presence of the masked man throughout the game is not characterized by mystery or intrigue but rather a sort of unspoken consensus on who it is and a reluctance to confront a very painful truth. the lack of explicit confirmation of his identity is not to preserve a surprising revelation but rather to delay the inevitable. it's not that no one knows, it's that no one wants to talk about it. the party members do not indicate that they are clueless as to who he is, but they do seem very reluctant to bring it up. the topic is rarely mentioned and one of the only things kumatora has to say about it is "that masked man... is he? nevermind. it doesn't matter". as for lucas, the visual distortions and surreal music during masked man encounters seem to indicate that on some level he knows who he is. when the truth finally is revealed, it's pretty notably downplayed. brief confirmation, mostly to cap off flint's character and to set up the final encounter. certainly not presented like an earth-shattering moment. you could compare this to the extremely dramatic revelation of hinawa's death, which *is* supposed to be shocking.
It's pretty much a rule in general, if there is a missing character and a masked person, the missing person has like an 80% chance of being the masked person
I like to interpret that the ending of Mother 3 is pretty much as true neutral as it can get. My interpretation is that since Claus, being under the influence of Porky (or even furthermore, Giygas, the literal embodiment of evil itself), when he pulled the 3 needles that he did, that was of course enough to cause a cataclysmic apocalypse for the whole world, but when Lucas pulled out his 4 needles, that was enough to save everyone's souls, but they would pretty much all live in a true purgatory; although since of course Lucas pulled one extra needle in the end result, everyone can go on "living their lives" as normal.
Год назад+12
My interpretation is that the Dragon destroyed every possible influence of the chimeras. The logo is an amalgamation of organic wood and synthetic metal, hinting at the deeds of the pigmasks. After the credits, the logo is shown again, but this time it's only made out of wood, with the globe for an O, similar to Earthbound Beginnings. The dragon reconstructed the whole world to its good, organic state. The only thing it couldn't destroy is Porky and his Absolutely Safe Capsule, thats why you can still talk to him when the screen is all black. The Pigmasks are completely destroyed, but all the good guys that were alive before Lucas pulled the needle are still alive and well. As for the black screen, I have only vague ideas. The Mother games are known for interacting with the player directly, like having one pray during the Giygas Battle. Maybe it's the game's way of saying "Your time in the game world is now over, you need to go, goodbye!" The characters of the game even say goodbye to the player after all. It may sound silly, but hey, it's a Mother game
For those wondering about the “darker” part, one example is that based on Porky’s unused sprites in Mother 3(meaning it could have happened in the N64 version too), Porky might have died, instead of being trapped in the capsule.
Mother 1: Life’s great I’m destined to defeat an alien with a song. Mother 2: Life’s great I’m destined to defeat the literal embodiment of chaos Mother 3: Everyone died and i woke a dragon by pulling out 7 needles
Flint didnt leave town. He visits hinawa's grave every day and searches for Lucas in the forest and mountains which are very close to town. Everybody still talks about him like they saw him the day before. He neglects him but he didnt abandon him.
First game: never played it Second game: I had a blast. It was witty, funny and dark. Third game: I had to contact a surgeon who removed the lacrimal glands (tear glands) from my eyes because of how sad the game is Edit: I don’t like this comment
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like people exaggerate how "sad" Mother 3 is. Like, a lot of this stuff happens in your typical anime. But I digress, feel how you want to feel.
Justin Langman Going over Shin Megami Tensei is a great idea, especially after how depressing the Mother games are. It would be a much needed source of feel good enjoyment.
the timeline of smt is crazy weird and will probably take too much work and time, here's a small example the female protagonist from "smt if" reappears in persona 1 and 2 and then i think in persona 2 an alternate universe is created in between both persona 2s (yes there are 2 persona 2s) and then the rest of the persona series happens, also smt soul hackers happens somewhere after p1 im not sure and the male protagonist of smt if gets manga series sequel or something
4:39 - the "Rorschach" background, when paused at a certain time, looks like a human fetus. The "intestines" stage is essentially a vagina & a cervix. You went back in time to kill Giygas when he was a fetus, when he was the most vulnerable, before he was evil. Not sure about this part, but I gotta share it. People take this a step further with rumors that the lines Giygas says are supposed to be lines from a victim during rape. People guess that's what the lines are about because Itoi admitted it was influenced from a traumatic experience he had as a child when he witnessed a rape scene in a movie (the movie was called The Military Policeman and the Dismembered Beauty). The "You cannot comprehend the true form of Giygas' attack" wasn't because Giygas was evil, because here in the past he's just a fetus trying to defend himself, pleading that we can be friends. Pocky calls him pure evil, but Pocky always lies. About Mother 3, I've seen some people suggest you're already in heaven at the beginning of the game, the end of the world has already happened. The faithful have been taken on the "white ship" to the island where there is no suffering or war. But what's the most crazy is Mother 3's references to the Biblical book of Revelations, where Satan is described as a sleeping dragon (like the one under the island) and 7 seals (like 7 needles) that if opened start the Apocolypse...which is essentially what happens in the game.
Guigas is fetus theory just doesn't work out for me. More like he took a dark path to gain immense dark power to finally get rid of his 8 melodies and love for Maria weaknesses once and for all, became a fallen godlike creature and imploded upon using all the power of darkness he had, only to be in primitive pain, fear and agony, fighting as desperately as wounded cornered animal with all the reflexes and instincts left against everything he encounters, that isn't under his control. In one of fight's "musical" themes , if to reverse it , it will say "I'm so sorry" multiple times, seems like his mind almost left his body from all the messed up stuff his power did to him and all mind that's left mostly unable to say anything because of agony, probably meaning he can't tell this directly anymore, so all he can do is to try with all his mind can do to apologize, even if party can't hear what he actually says, just hear something creepy sounding like a voice. Whatever he says to Ness is probably PSI power , he has more control over, but his state not allowing him to say anything reasonable, only express feelings.
Guigas taking a shape of a fetus could be true though as long as you don't overcomplicate it. Could just be asking for pity defence mechanism. Could be his weakness hiding within creepy red siluets, well protected by them. Could be to add even more shock to the players who see and recognize a fetus among all the madness and scary things happening. It's open to interpretation, and the right interpretation for you should probably shock you the most to match perfectly with the ideas behind this boss fight.
The fetus was an unintentional result of Giygas's sprite being made to loop on itself. The scene Itoi walked in on was a dismemberment scene, not a rape scene. I never heard his full version of the story, so I could believe that he may have believed it was a rape scene. Regardless, Giygas' fight is meant to be representative of the loss of innocence, which is what that traumatic experience did to Itoi. Giygas basically is the concept of corruption, which is why his lines are so confusing. "f r i e n d s" "I f e e l g o o d" "I t h u r t s" it's this unnerving idea of extreme pain being pleasure. Sadomasochism isn't exactly something the mind of a child is built to comprehend, but when they're forced to understand it, among many other things, innocence assuredly dies, and corruption starts to take root.
PSA for anyone who doesn't know: the english version of Mother 3 at the end of the video is a fan translated version. It's technically piracy but that's nintendo's fault for not giving us any other option. Go download it and play it!
@BIRTHDAYFACE046 Mother 3 has a lot of controversial themes, such as the magypsies being gay stereotypes and the animal cruelty with the chimeras. That's probably why they won't realese it, it's too controversial.
Guilherme the magypsies aren’t gay stereotypes, they actually represent a Japanese culture that celebrates over-the-top femininity, which is apparently too much for us sensitive baby Americans to handle
My theory to the ending of Earthbound: Lucas was a good enough person to the point where when he pulled the final needle, he saved the world instead of ending it, and everybody was okay.
I still got little tears in my eyes while you talked about the end of Mother 3 I finished the game for the first time in 2018 and that scene STILL GETS TO ME
Something absolutely amazing would be having a full Bayonetta series explanation. Would love that (mostly cuz i didnt understand absolutely nothing about it)
Speaking of... Soon Babylon will fall. The end is near, so repent so you may come to Zion. You see Isaiah's prophecies being fulfilled already: Isaiah 28: 15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: 16 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. 17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. 18 ¶ And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

Mother 3 is a masterpiece so gutted they still haven't released it out of Japan :( That part were porky locks himself in that capsule really freaked me out I still think about it years after playing it :')
"You can't grasp the true form of Giygas' attack" I played it on an emulator, and after DAYS of that boss fight, I decided to look up how to use cheats because I was being killed constantly, no matter how much damage I made. After that didn't work out either, I decided the game was either broken, or I was supposed to do something specific, like with Poo's meditation being interrupted (it took me a while to realize I was supposed to keep meditating), so I started to try everything. Finally I found out I had to pray. I loaded the savestate from earlier in the fight (the one I was playing was a couple of hours throwing shit at Giygas without success), and finished it in a blink because I also overleveled myself like there's no tomorrow.
I love this so much! I like how you explain both the game lore and the production of them. (Also this is perfectly timed considering the announcement of Pollyanna)
Great I was waiting for this! Very awesome animation and editing and the drawings are so cute. The mother series were a treasure honestly, very quirky and fun but just remembering the endings of each game is enough to bring some tears. Boney is the cutest thing ever with that green shirt.
Flint never fully left, he's home after the time skip. He's fairly closed off, only spending his time grieving for Hinawa, and looking for Claus. We get to speak with him at the beginning of the actual main game, and he even steps in to help Lucas, at the very end. We just don't hear about him much, because there's no news. Pray at Hinawa's grave, look for Claus, watch his house get hit by lightning, repeat.

I remember when I first fought Claus- I was like TIME TO BEAT SOME SENSE INTO HIM, tho Lucas couldn't bring himself to attack and I was forced to watch depression
I think Porky is the true evil guy here. Giygas didn't want to fight and was forced by his race. In the end, he loses control all control and his mind collapses, creating that weird swirly mass of faces. You can see that he's in agony too.
Like, at least in the GBA port of Mother 1 & Earthbound you can see Ninten’s dad at the end, but Ness’s dad is only a phone. That’s all he is. Poor ness :(
4:30 - Porky as we'll learn is possibly one of the most sadistically evil villains in the history of RPGs, to the point where Kefka would pull him aside and tell him to get a grip.
@@thanib7796 There's a fun fan theory about Porky, that he could be Giygas. I'm not normally crazy about fan theories, but this is a good one if it's true. Apparently, when he entered the Absolute Safety Capsule, he stayed in there for countless millions of years, slowly losing his mind over those years. A race of time traveling aliens found his capsule and thought it was some sort of god and worshipped it, modifying it to resemble their standard of a shrine and enabling him to communicate with them. They sent him to the past because he still wanted to one-up Ness (somehow despite losing most of his mind, his obsession with Ness still remained, hence why we see Ness' image in the Devil's Machine). In the past, young Porky found it and we know the rest.
@@thanib7796 That's how the theory goes. Giygas was Porky all along, and Earthbound and Mother 3 are an endless time loop that happens over and over again, because Porky always ends up in that situation.

Mother 3 is one of the saddest games ever made. Now to end this with a sparrow-like chirp chirp!
Man that end scene in Earthbound where it says the players name prays for the party, dude that hit me so hard as a kid I literally teared up
Huh, so that's what Lucas pulls when he wins in smash bros. Wait, so if he wins the whole world ends?
Guess who gets his stamina reduced first!... :O
Just like in the game!
@Lucas what's with heaven bro? I'm in the next universe. Only 1000000 era's ahead. I guess you were from the past eh?
It’s also his up-smash

*Okay*

I know your pain
i just realized how much Earthbound beginnings inspired so much for shadow the hedgehog's backstory
like Maria the mother = Maria the child
Giygas = Shadow the hedgehog
George the scientist = George Robotnik

But let’s not forget, Giegue was also the basis for Mewtwo
@@midnightarcanacentraltv5815 really?
Shadow cannot be giygas since giygas is pure evil and shadow isnt and also for mewtwo but
The story of giegue , shadow and mewtwo can be the same since giegue is not pure evil because, Shadow was not evil too because of Maria and Mewtwo was not evil because of Amber .
So yeah it's somewhat relatable ( but only in the case of giegue)
@gaganpreetsaini8504
Shadow isn't pure evil? He tried to blow up the planet in Adventure 2. And tried to conquer the universe... twice. (SonicX / Shadow the Hedgehog)
I didn’t realize Mother 3 was so dark. Like, Lucas had to go through his mother dying and after nearly escaping death his brother ran away causing his dad to start looking for him leaving Lucas to fend for himself. And then he has to watch his brother kill himself, wow.
When everyone is talking about Breath of the wild, I'm always like b#tch please, Lucas and Samus had it way worse with a lot more trauma to go with it.
@@geoffreygoncalves931 I mean throughout the games, reincarnated link has gone through alot
I bet Lucas would get along well with Zuko
@@geoffreygoncalves931 Breath of the wild.... dude, are you serious? This is probably the dumbest comparison ever made
Not only watching his brother commit suicide, he also (unwillingly) *help* the brother kill himself
Mother: fighting vengeful alien
Earthbound: fighting evil messed up alien
Mother 3: fighting thousand year old child dictator
And crying. So much crying.
I guess it does make sense, your mother died, your dad peaced out, and the only family you have left just killed themselves right in front of you...
It's completely understandable for a young boy to hate the world after going through that, that's why when he told the dragon his feelings, the dragon destroyed the world, which is just what Lucas really wanted at that point in time
But deep inside a small part of him wanted the world to be safe, giving the ending to think about what may have happened.
If there’s no care for spoilers, he completely skipped the part where your dad dives in front of a non lightning attack from claus and is majorly damaged, saving you
That's not what the ending of Mother 3 is at all.
Yeah, because in the end everyone "survived", implying that they are alive and that the world was probably reincarnated.
Yeah I think Lucas did want to destroy the world ,but also to save everyone give them a second chance so that's what happened
It was kinda easy to predict who the Masked Man was. He's kid-sized, and who's the one kid in the game who happens to be conveniently missing?
Though, in fairness, this was a game for kids. Kids are usually less familiar with writing cliches like than adults are, since they've absorbed a lot less media overall.
@@Bawhoppen Mother 3 wasn’t aimed at kids in the first place, though
Pretty sure the game expects you to know that
it's not supposed to be a shocking or unexpected reveal. most players will figure it out immediately and the rest piece it together as the game goes on.
the presence of the masked man throughout the game is not characterized by mystery or intrigue but rather a sort of unspoken consensus on who it is and a reluctance to confront a very painful truth. the lack of explicit confirmation of his identity is not to preserve a surprising revelation but rather to delay the inevitable. it's not that no one knows, it's that no one wants to talk about it.
the party members do not indicate that they are clueless as to who he is, but they do seem very reluctant to bring it up. the topic is rarely mentioned and one of the only things kumatora has to say about it is "that masked man... is he? nevermind. it doesn't matter". as for lucas, the visual distortions and surreal music during masked man encounters seem to indicate that on some level he knows who he is.
when the truth finally is revealed, it's pretty notably downplayed. brief confirmation, mostly to cap off flint's character and to set up the final encounter. certainly not presented like an earth-shattering moment. you could compare this to the extremely dramatic revelation of hinawa's death, which *is* supposed to be shocking.
It's pretty much a rule in general, if there is a missing character and a masked person, the missing person has like an 80% chance of being the masked person
The ending says how the characters will stay alive within the game and cannot be truly killed. Their story ends with you the player.
Keep in mind that the story of mother 3 was much darker in the n64 version, but changed in the final release in the gba
What was it on n64?
@@n3squ1ksarchive25 Mother 64. The original version of mother 3. Never ended up coming out though.
Nesquick If it interests you, there is some gameplay footage of the unreleased mother 64 beta floating around on RUclips
It’s definitely a good thing that it was on the GBA instead of the N64
For those wondering about the “darker” part, one example is that based on Porky’s unused sprites in Mother 3(meaning it could have happened in the N64 version too), Porky might have died, instead of being trapped in the capsule.
Mother 1: Life’s great I’m destined to defeat an alien with a song.
Mother 2: Life’s great I’m destined to defeat the literal embodiment of chaos
Mother 3: Everyone died and i woke a dragon by pulling out 7 needles
So...what's up for Mother 4?
Flint didnt leave town. He visits hinawa's grave every day and searches for Lucas in the forest and mountains which are very close to town. Everybody still talks about him like they saw him the day before. He neglects him but he didnt abandon him.

Mainline Shin Megami Tensei is an amazing series with lots of overarching lore. I'd love to see it done in this artstyle.
Justin Langman Going over Shin Megami Tensei is a great idea, especially after how depressing the Mother games are. It would be a much needed source of feel good enjoyment.
I can’t wait for him to explain how Dante was hanging out with Demifiend in smt 3
the timeline of smt is crazy weird and will probably take too much work and time, here's a small example the female protagonist from "smt if" reappears in persona 1 and 2 and then i think in persona 2 an alternate universe is created in between both persona 2s (yes there are 2 persona 2s) and then the rest of the persona series happens, also smt soul hackers happens somewhere after p1 im not sure
and the male protagonist of smt if gets manga series sequel or something
Oh great. Here come the Persona fans sticking their games where they don't belong again.

Shadow ripped Giygas off?!
I have heard this theory before about fighting Giygas as a fetus. I don't buy it at all.
I save your life in 3 seconds
Just turn upside Giygas's final form
*You're welcome*

Mother 3 has a lot of controversial themes, such as the magypsies being gay stereotypes and the animal cruelty with the chimeras.

16 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

@@SBaby How interesting! So he was working alongside himself in an alternate timeline?
