Malcolm Marshall greatness is that he took wickets even in flat wickets. He would say hello to batsmen with vicious bouncer and goodbye with his yorker or leg cutters.

Marshall made his debut against India in the 1978/79 series in Alvin Kallicharan headed B team. Their top players were in Australia playing WCC.
Marshall played 3 tests in that series and was an unremarkable bowler on equally unremarkable batting tracks. Nobody would have made the prediction that this is the guy who would go on to become the most feared and most successful fast bowler of the 1980s.
Marshall’s success and steady place came on the WI squad in the early 1980s when Colin Croft decided to go on the rebel tour and Andy Roberts was getting near the the end of his career.
Those two openings gave rise to two new pace bowlers on the WI squad, Malcolm Marshall and Courtney Walsh who debuted in 1984 against Australia.

In my opinion, the greatest fast bowler we've ever seen. By all accounts a really genuine and lovely fellow off the pitch, and a fierce competitor and great team mate on it. He had a tremendous cricketing brain, could swing the ball both ways, move it off the seam both ways, changed speeds, a really nasty bouncer than caught many a batsman out.
He would be one of my opening pair of bowlers in my all time XI. Such a shame he died so young of colon cancer. My only regret when it comes to Malcolm is that he was a West Indian and not and Englishman, as he dismantled our batting with regularity. One of the all time greats. Any all-time XI that doesn't have his name in it, for me automatically disqualifies itself :)

@@kunalsingh3121 I won't argue that Dennis Lillee is one of the great fast bowlers of all time. But, and this is just my opinion, he would make my all time XI. I've only chosen players I've seen play either on the TV or live, but I've been watching cricket since the mid-70s so I have fair history of watching.
      For me...
      Sunil Gavaskar
      Matthew Hayden
      Viv Richards (c)

      Jacques Kallis
      Adam Gilchrist
      Wasim Akram
      Shane Warne
      Malcolm Marshall
      Michael Holding.

I will have Wasim, Malcolm, Warne and Gilchrist too in my XI...but you overlooked Gordon which is just criminal he was brilliant one of the greatest and finest opening batter of last 50 years he got overshadowed by Viv's brilliance,,,,,,He will by in my XI ahead of Sunil Gavaskar...I will pick Dennis Lillee ahead of Michael Holding who was brilliant too but Dennis is in top echelon along with Marshall and Akram..I will pick Imran Khan ahead of Kallis and will lead my side..

      @@prasadvasudevan2269 Great bowler, McGrath.
But he was just never as exciting to watch, for me.
Statisticly McGrath is one of the best ever pace bowlers, in terms of number of test wickets taken over a career, but his success was mostly down to hard work, fitness, accuracy and longetivity.
Whereas guys like Garner, Holding, Donald, Akram, Marshall etc., were just so damn exciting to watch.
And on their day, they were almost unplayable, on any wicket.
Even now, I often go in on RUclips and watch them, when they were at their best.
Garner, with his graceful action, almost jogged in, but he could generate so much pace and bounce because of his height, it was breathtaking to watch him bowl.
Donald, with his pure fire and aggresivity was also unplayable on his day.
And Akram (my alltime favourite) was just breathtaking to behold, he really was. He hardly had any run-up, but again; could generate amazing pace and bounce, and his yorkers and reverse swing were pure magic.
Holdings graceful run-up and bowling action were technically perfect, and he was also amazing to watch. And his pace was just phenomenal. For me, Holding was the fastest, scariest bowler ever - on his day.
Malcolm Marshalls sheer pace and the way he made the ball skid off the wicket was also great to watch.
At their best, these guys were totally unplayable, on any wicket, against any batsman.
Taking nothing away from McGrath though, he certainly was a prolific wicket taker.

The man has cut down on his pace, but his control of swing (both ways) and accuracy is legendary.
That Boon dismissal is a good example. Since he swings most of them in a long way, Boon HAD TO play the legcutter and edge behind. The way Maco comes around the wicket and causes it to swerve from a leg-stump line is also very difficult to play.
Great bowling from a very, very intelligent bowler.

@HengistTheGreat Cutting the ball off the deck is a special art. Not just movement off the deck (that men like Philander have generated brilliantly in recent times), but the actual finger action in cutting the ball. I am not sure many modern bowlers are well-versed in the art form and pitch conditions do play a part there; along with skill factor. Lillee, Holding, Roberts and Snow were the original masters in the 70s and Marshall in the 80s.

@kamranwasti Could well be possible. I cannot see the ball clearly in this clip to say for sure. But the track is abrasive, the weather seems dry and the ball is somewhat old. All the ingredients are there to generate reverse swing and he does get a couple of them to seriously bend in this clip. It's more likely to be reverse than conventional swing, IMHO. And he's not just nipping them around off the seam, he's actually making it travel in the air.

Great bowler, if one can watch him bowling out England in 1984 with a broken arm.
Any past video of this uploaded?

Ended up being a disappointing tour for Australia. Won the One day series easily but just couldn't get the break's against a very proud Windies outfit

@kamranwasti I think he said that he would bowl a signal ball at the advertising boards BEFORE he started the spell of course ....now that is saying something. It could be just to get a patch on one side from the get go but I wonder how that would have been perceived today especially if Wasim or Waqar did that lol

@Imrankniazi Having said that, some of his deliveries in this clip are genuine cutters. Let's also not forget that alongwith swing in the air, the man possessed a very lethal leg-cutter and a pretty useful off-cutter.

@Imrankniazi I read a Ramiz Raja interview during the 1990s in which he said that when in the West Indies or Pakistan, Marshall would invariably bowl his first few balls with the old ball wide outside the off stump to rough up the ball and then the ball would start swinging in for him. Reverse swing?

  • @Imrankniazi
    @Imrankniazi 12 лет назад

@HengistTheGreat McDermott was a fine bowler, for sure. Never had a leg-cutter though, to the best of my knowledge. Had a fine off-cutter and could swing the ball well. This video's uploader knows cricket a lot better than most of us. He would correct my statement, if it's untrue :-) And he has uploaded videos of all the great bowlers I mentioned. Check 'em out. Cheers!
