The new flag and arms are actually a great example of what is known as canting arms in heraldry. Canting arms can be seen as a sort of pun relating to the name of the place or person that owns the arms. Sometimes, canting arms make a pun in a quite unetymological way. Take for instance the municipality of Kalix in Sweden. Its coat of arms features a chalice as a pun on the Latin word calix. Of course, the municipality did not get its name from Latin, but from Sami. As you mentioned in the video, the name of Kanepi actually comes from cannabis. And while the new flag and coat of arms may seem like some edgy internet humour, local seals from the area featured hemp, long before this online referendum, so the new municipal symbols actually have roots in history.
@@Foyoon Exactly! Even though the name probably doesn't have anything to do with bears, it still sounds similar, which is why the bear became a symbol for Berlin. Canting arms are really fun, so I will give another example. There is a municipality in southwestern Sweden called Falkenberg. Their coat of arms shows a falcon standing on a mountain. The Swedish word for mountain is "berg", and you can probably guess that "falk" means falcon.

Yep, this city had the cannibis leaf on its flag. When I went on December last year to visit my girlfriend, most of the road signs indicating how far away the cities were, they had the name of the city (duh) and the coat of arms. I heard about this place before because of my girlfriend, and it was surreal for me even though yeah, that city really adopted the cannibis leaf for its flag and coat of arms, because when I saw one of the road signs that said Kanepi on it, I took a close look on the signs and coat, and yeah... they really have it. This is a pretty interesting flag. On the one hand, it's everything a good flag should be, and it's rooted in the area's history and in the heraldic tradition of canting. On the other hand, most see it as a big joke at best and disgraceful at worst, for obvious reasons. I personally really like the cannabis leaf flag, but I also believe that a flag should be well-liked by the people it represents, so in my opinion they should've gone for something else. What do you people think?
Not from Kanepi or even Estonia for that matter, but I agree that the flag and arms beautifully following the heraldic tradition of canting arms. I personally believe that they should roll with this. I am anti-drugs, but hemp has a real historical importance to this town, and hemp even appears on old seals from the area.
