I don’t feel like Boz ever got the accolades he deserves.. what a perfect mix of rock, blues and jazz! Such a smooth voice, he just gets better with age. Also wanted to add: Such a perfect breakdown from you on this performance.
Boz has one of the most unique voices and it’s just a pleasure to listen to him sing. You have to admit that the 70’s produced some of the most incredible crooners and musicians....love this❤️👌
WoP, I appreciate your expert analysis. From my perspective as an amatuer, Boz Scaggs is a great performer and his unique voice paired with those great songs and band make him a rock legend in my opinion.
@@dstinnettusa ahhh....but one's voice can be an instrument as well, wouldn't you agree? Some would say of an older singer/soloist "he still has the chops!"
As always, love your analysis. So knowledgeable, descriptive and informative. Always love the Boz! Connections with so many of my favorite artists. Cool connection with his band mates also. The girls are off the hook! Really like how he lets them put the exclamation point on the end of "Look What You've Done To Me"! Beautiful! Keep up the good work Fills. Rock on!
I'm soooo happy that you featured Boz! Years ago, we had tickets to see Dan Fogelberg in Reno, and thought to see if any other artists might be in town during that weekend...we got lucky, with tickets to see Boz! It was in one of the big hotels, but wasn't in a fancy stage area...no numbered seats (just chairs), and if I remember correctly, his band consisted of only five members (including him)! There was only one back-up vocalist, but that's all he needed that night...incredible music came from that small group!!! I've been a fan since "Silk Degrees", and this DVD is my all-time favorite! His two back-up vocalists (Miss Monet and Barbara Wilson) are mind-blowing!! I also recommend the cd version for playing in your car...great road music! Thanks again, Fil!! 🧡
Boz is smooth as silk .....wonderful songs takes me back living new Zealand and Australia where the whole album was constantly played on radio ....great stuff ....love this channel ..thanks
Classic. Boz Scaggs is such a consummate professional. The BG vocals (and ladies) are fab!! I really liked them lol. All of them - loved the groove. And the band. Tight. So good. Thank you Fil!
Great voice, great performance. Had almost forgotten ... but I was at Slim's once. Long line to get in. Standing only. Met him when he was the main performer at the Black and White Ball in San Francisco and I did some letters for him inviting the other acts... irrelevant here - LOL. But many of these videos bring back memories long forgotten. Love your commentary here - pointing out many things I wouldn't have noticed. Love your take on this performance.
Thanks Fil, you have great taste in your choices of featured artists. Boz has always been one of my favorites and I discovered him here in SF when I moved here in 67/68. My band had some roots in common with the Steve Miller group and so we sort of rubbed shoulders and played on bills together a few times. It always does me good to see youngsters who appreciate the older players like this.
Boz was a fixture on the San Francisco music scene in the late 70s and throughout the 80s. I was so fortunate to be young and living in the Bay Area at that time. We got to see him perform in large concert venues and small clubs. There are those special artists, who are as good, or even better performing live, than their studio produced sound on an album, Boz is one of them.
Fil, wonderful analysis. Having grown up in San Francisco, I have seen Boz in concert, both in huge arenas and also small clubs, like this one: The Great American Music Hall. Always a great show, especially when he's got the full horn section. Thanks!
I remember seeing Boz one time in an amphitheater setting and there was a ballroom floor onstage which a guy came out and polished before the band came on. So they were all standing on a shiny reflective surface. Boz performed in a black 3-piece suit ... very classy. Everyone dressed to the nines. Just like in this video with everyone in black. And the music so smooth and silky, jazzy, smoky. Oh my gosh. Thanks again for analyzing Boz, Fil.
@Sassy T.... I have to agree with your assessment.... Having seen him several times, ... His performances were better than the Studio Version. ... I feel fortunate as well ( so neat to read that part , in your comment) that I was able to see and enjoy those venues with Mr. Boz.
This and other songs got him a pass to the Ghetto. He had this wonderful voice, thank God. We could enjoy his blues-styled songs. He has declared that he discovered he could sing like this and a good manager helped him to save money for the old age. He went to the University of Madison in Wisconsin, and was part of Steve Miller's band. You don't see this assembled group of great talented musicians, very often. Thanks for sharing 👍
Great performance. You mentioned the Muscle Shoals All Stars. I watched a video of their work, since I had been admiring their work for decades. Like the Wrecking Crew, they put their brand on many great songs and artists. They even made a deal with Bob Segar since they like what he was doing and they helped him out, but it worked both ways. I had a flashback to Van Morrison with some of his vocal phrasing. Thanks for this journey, you are doing a great service to the music industry with your unique brand of videos.
This is weird. I'm a Boz Scaggs superfan. He's from the "old days" in The City (San Francisco). Today I just got a cd I've been looking for. Boz Scaggs Unplugged At The Plant 1994. Been hunting for it for a while. Finally found it in your neck of the woods. England. It's a radio program from KFOG in San Francisco. 2 days after I bought on Ebay, it popped up on Amazon as a reprint. Go figure. Thanks for having Boz on your show. Excellent choice. He's got a voice that's easy to listen to, and writes songs we all can relate to. And, great musicians want to work with him.

Thank you for bringing in your Boz Scaggs analysis, Fil. We all can use a little soul 😁 It is worth noting that Boz' earlier material was more soul music. Boz recorded his debut (1969) at Muscle Shoals with the MS Sound Rhythm Section. Duane Allman was guest guitarist, and MS studio musicians such as Roger Hawkins (big force on drumming with the MSSRS in the 70s). For better or worse, this determined the sound of many artists in the 70s.
Love, love, love Boz Scaggs! He was huge during my high school years. Not only is he a wonderful singer,( from the few interviews I've seen) Boz is a true Southern gentleman. Thanks, Fil, for the walk down memory lane.
Big, big, BIG fan of Boz Scaggs! One of those artists that takes you back to knowing where you were and what you were doing when you hear one of his songs. A top-notch analysis of a top-notch artist, Fil!
I was young when Lido Shuffle came out and I played that single over and over and over again. I didn't know why it was so much better than the average song. Instinctively, I knew I was listening to something very special. Now, all these years later, I'm back to listening to Boz Scaggs. I know this video is a year old but, his music is timeless and top quality. By the way, Fil, my biggest pet peeve is when someone stops a song short. You have the most wonderful Knack of waiting till those drum vibrations float away and then you stop the song. That's so special. Thanks for all you do. Sincerely, Carly💙
Another great review and analysis. Your knowledge and respect for the musicianship and talent of the artists from the 60s and 70s is much appreciated. Its refreshing to see younger musicians like yourself appreciating the brilliance of a majority of the artists that shaped a generation of music lovers. It seemed like most of the great artists of the time, reached their creative peak during the 70s. Elton John once said that he could never replicate the quality of the music he created in the 70s. He said that most artists were at the top their game, and you had to be at your creative and musical best to keep up.
Luv, luv, luv Boz Scaggs. When I was younger the coolest voice with a guitar. I grew up with guys like him and musicians. Out of my generation a lot of nerds and people that didn’t know music became cool, but here was Boz with excellent musicians that were smart and cool to begin with. They were the Tommy Dorsey of our day and believe you me Dorsey and his band were cool. His voice moves people like any great artist and star.
those days of real new Boz' music were just electric...oldie here and those memories are special.. a national blues/jazz treasure is one Boz Skagg's.. everyone that hasn't had special "relations" with Boz in the background ..sit down... many many many are still standing... enough said..
What Can I Say, Breakdown Dead Ahead, It's Over, We're All Alone, Lowdown and Lido Shuffle were all great radio hits here in Australia. Remember them all fondly.
Ive been watching and learning from Fil for over a year. You sir, are the best at what you do. Your appreciation, knowledge and enthusiasm for all types is music is a gem for us to watch!
LOVE Boz Scaggs! He was definitely one of my favorite artists way back when. I listened to his albums over and over again all day long! I love your reactions. Every once in a while a big smile comes on your face and it lights up the screen!
I went to the opening night at Slim's and met Boz aka.'Presidio Slim' . He bought me (and everyone else} a drink. It's been 30+ years and Slim's is still going strong.
I love this song!!!! And it sounds almost exactly like the original record; phenomenal musicians and back-up singers! Boz was so lucky to have the almost-all Toto band playing on that record. And my favorite drummer of all time, Jeff Porcaro never failed to bring us brilliant drumming. Thank you so much for this Fil! :-D
I'm so glad you did this one, actually you could have chosen anyone of a dozen songs from this show, one of the tightest bands, backing vocals and the effortless cool of Boz make for one of the best live shows ever on RUclips, pure class. Thanks once again!
Another great one Fil. Thanks for the live version. I was young when I first hear Lowdown, it was years before I bought my first Boz album and was shocked it was not a black band.
Wow, that band is so tight and Boz has such soul in voice... amazing performance. Such a grove could listen to it all day, thank you Fil, I have not heard of Boz before will be looking him up now...
Ok this is probably my favorite analyses so far. Boz Scaggs is amazing. My favorite song of his is 'Loan me a Dime' (Greatest Hits Live DVD 2004). Trust me and listen to it, it's incredible.
Absolutely right!!! Thank you for saying that! I heard on the radio a DJ asking what song they’d take with them on a desert island and Boz’s version of that song won.
@@michaelhendricks1206 it also originally appears on Boz second self-titled studio album. Duane's anthology consisted of previously recorded material fantastic anthology though
Love Boz...like many others and yourself it takes me back to younger days. Cassettes were King in the Pioneer tape deck in the car and at home. Taped the albums, wore out the tape and then make a new one. I know a lot of people remember doing this too! Thanks for the analysis. Wish you could put a big shout out to the girls backing him up! They make the song just come alive and sound like a production. ♥✌
Another great video Fil! Stone cold smooth artist in Boz Scaggs! Growing up on the west coast of California I was fortunate to be exposed to a lot of Boz. Your story of riding in the car and hearing Boz on the radio really resonated with me. You hear something great like that and it takes your mind right back to that place in time. The video that this song came from is a must have for anybody’s collection. It is simply a top-notch performance in a wonderful venue with great sound! The band and the back up singers just phenomenal! Thanks for the shout out to slims! I don’t know if it’s open anymore. I’ve been there a few times. I remember seeing the Tower Of Power there a number of times. The place was so full they were jamming people in like a Japanese rail commuter car. Always a great time there but not many chairs. LOL when I was there the stage was on one end of the building and the bar was on the other end of the building and the bar only had about five hard metal chairs in front of it or so it seemed. It’s no secret that the ladies love Boz Skaggs! Always keep some on hand!
Always loved the Boz. Fortunately got to see him around 1980, along with Peter, Paul, and Mary. A memorable concert to be sure, Thanks Fil for another outstanding analysis.
I have this entire show on DVD. I think it was recorded at his own nightclub in San Francisco. LOVE those backup singers too. A great DVD that includes Lido Shuffle, Lowdown, Harbor Lights & so many other of his hits.
Fil, i was trying to find a kath video and the hendrix video - but you have so many - i did notice unlike your other videos, your eyes were closed listening to hendrix! sweet!!!!
I go back to 1968 when Boz was a member of the Steve Miller band! A important member! Steve's first 2 albums Children of the Future and Sailor Boz wrote and sang a couple of songs on both albums! In 1969 Boz released his first solo album with the just great song Loan Me a Dime with Duane Allman playing lead Guitar! Bo has been making music for over 50 years! Great Music!!!!! Oh BTW this concert is on RUclips in its entirety And is so worth a listen!!!!
I saw Boz live in 2015 at a small venue and it was fantastic. My first intro to Boz was the 13 minute "Loan Me A Dime" from his second album with Duane Allman on lead guitar -- amazing! I have followed all of Boz's albums since then. Thank you for the review. :-)
Excellent analysis Fil! I remember listening to Boz Scaggs in my early teens and beyond. What wonderful memories come flooding back! He had such diversity in his music, from songs like Lido Shuffle to Were all alone! Awesome! Cheers Mario! 😎🤘👌
This three albums of his, Silk Degrees, Down Two Then Left and Middleman... we're in my cassette collections in the 70s even as punk moved in... Great music, great analysis too, Fil
I saw John Mellencamp about 10 years ago at a symphony hall. The older artists have really raised their game and are now touring with some impressively refined productions. The stage lighting is so well coordinated with the music now as well.
..... More great music , great performance, .... Getting a " Fil Fix", lol..... Before Dreamland. Every performance I saw of Mr. Boz was just fabulous...... The attention to detail and the dynamics were always spot on. ... Thank you, Fil...! Pleasant dreams!
I saw Boz years ago after his great success and I have to say he was in that class of musician that did not phone his performance in. He was attentive to all details and worked hard at crafting a show that met the highest of standards. Oddly, Boz reminded me of Steve Hackett of Genesis who in his solo shows is a total perfectionist in determining the right sound is being made for every show. Hackett like Boz was absolutely focused on every detail of the performance to the point I saw Hackett at the back of the venue testing the sound on the speakers in the back. Boz like Steve Hackett are total professionals in mastering the sound for the best possible show.
Love it! Have been fortunate to see Boz twice. His shows are like sitting in your favorite chair with headphones listening to a record. Perfect sound. Hats off to his sound board crew at live shows. I would pay to hear the background singers. They are killing it.
Always a great job Fil! I am realizing how lucky I am to have grown up in the SF Bay Area and been a teenager in 1970s - I have been able to see so many good shows over the years. I saw Boz on the tour when the original album (Middle Man)was just released at the Berkeley Greek Theater - great show.
Loan Me A Dime...Boz and Duane Allman...sooo good. This is a great performance...thanks for analysis. Boz is so smooth..and always worked with the best.
I am a bit, well a lot, older than you are, and saw Boz Scaggs fronting a big band live at U. Mass in 1973, I think. He was great. I already knew who he was because he had been a member one of my favorite bands at the time, The Steve Miller Band.
one of the coolest things you could watch this whole concert still BoZ and the gods of RUclips are very friendly..the whole concert is there from San Francisco I watch it about every couple of months cuz I've Loved Boz back in the day when he was a member of the unknown at the time hippie Steve Miller Band..
I’ve seen him 3X in concert in the last ten years. He never disappoints. Great blues guitarist and a voice like a smooth horn. Boz used to be in Steve Miller’s band.
One thing I've learned in your analysis series is how fine some bands were - in particular Boz Scaggs and The Doobie Brothers. Mighty fine musicians with great layering and dynamic weighting of all the sound. It's not so surprising in the case of Boz as he started his life playing with future Toto band members, amongst others.
Oh yay great choice Fil !! Something so happy about his sound. I particularly loved when he and David Foster collaborated. Boz' voice w David's writing. It was stellar. Spot on. Classy.
Thanks Fil. Love Boz. Trying to get copy of Dig, which was released in 2001. No luck for now. Fantastic singer, songwriter and guitarist. All his blues stuff is on permanent rotation in my car. Greetings from Australia. Susan
I don’t feel like Boz ever got the accolades he deserves.. what a perfect mix of rock, blues and jazz! Such a smooth voice, he just gets better with age. Also wanted to add: Such a perfect breakdown from you on this performance.
You forgot soul. We used to think of Boz as soul.
How his sound could be so full and so intricate is way more understandable to me now! Thanks for showcasing Boz, one of the coolest musicians, ever!
This whole concert is an absolute masterpiece - so classy, adult music

@@michaelhendricks1206 it also originally appears on Boz second self-titled studio album.
Duane's anthology consisted of previously recorded material fantastic anthology though
Love Boz...like many others and yourself it takes me back to younger days. Cassettes were King in the Pioneer tape deck in the car and at home. Taped the albums, wore out the tape and then make a new one. I know a lot of people remember doing this too! Thanks for the analysis. Wish you could put a big shout out to the girls backing him up! They make the song just come alive and sound like a production. ♥✌
O Fil, you did it again, been a fan of Boz since the 60's. thanks so much - - - Happy Holidays!!!
That entire concert is a treasure.
I have this entire show on DVD. I think it was recorded at his own nightclub in San Francisco. LOVE those backup singers too. A great DVD that includes Lido Shuffle, Lowdown, Harbor Lights & so many other of his hits.
Boz owns both the Great American Music Hall and Biscuits and Blues in the TL.
Have the DVD also--I believe it was recorded at The Great American Music Hall.
Fil, i was trying to find a kath video and the hendrix video - but you have so many - i did notice unlike your other videos, your eyes were closed listening to hendrix! sweet!!!!
The music of my youth ♥️♥️ You make me very happy 🎤🎸🎤
That was quite refreshing to the ears. Smooth.
Boz Scaggs was the beginning of my love for Blues music. Thanks, Fil, for teaching me more about this amazing musician.
All live no editing no overdubs just professional musicians
This three albums of his, Silk Degrees, Down Two Then Left and Middleman... we're in my cassette collections in the 70s even as punk moved in... Great music, great analysis too, Fil
I saw John Mellencamp about 10 years ago at a symphony hall. The older artists have really raised their game and are now touring with some impressively refined productions. The stage lighting is so well coordinated with the music now as well.
Such a smooth and really nice groove to this guy's sound, everything he does. Really like him!
I've not seen this performance of Boz Scaggs, I like it! another great analysis. You always get two Rockin' thumbs up from me Fil.
Boz, as good as it gets, "Down two then Left" is a much overlooked LP, is my favorite for sure. Thanks Fil
The entire set of this performance is stellar. Boz is just all kinds of awesome.
Awesome video, learned so much Fil. Another song I wish you would sing. ??💕😙😚
Great review of a Great artist! Made me decide to have a listening BozFest tomorrow!
His voice instantly brings me back to my High School days and chillin’ with my friends.
..... More great music , great performance, .... Getting a " Fil Fix", lol..... Before Dreamland.
Every performance I saw of Mr. Boz was just fabulous...... The attention to detail and the dynamics were always spot on. ...
Thank you, Fil...! Pleasant dreams!
Thanks Fil.....love Boz Skaggs, and the memories that come with this great music. I keep praying for a "real music" revolution!!
Interesting-thanks.
Boz is a national treasure
one of the coolest things you could watch this whole concert still BoZ and the gods of RUclips are very friendly..the whole concert is there from San Francisco I watch it about every couple of months cuz I've Loved Boz back in the day when he was a member of the unknown at the time hippie Steve Miller Band..
Boz fan here. 🤘
I’ve seen him 3X in concert in the last ten years. He never disappoints. Great blues guitarist and a voice like a smooth horn. Boz used to be in Steve Miller’s band.
Smoothe sound. Thanks Fil.
Going to see Scaggs Wednesday, I just knew I'd find an analysis video by you. Good one, thanks.
Such a great analysis Fil. Thank you 😊
One thing I've learned in your analysis series is how fine some bands were - in particular Boz Scaggs and The Doobie Brothers. Mighty fine musicians with great layering and dynamic weighting of all the sound. It's not so surprising in the case of Boz as he started his life playing with future Toto band members, amongst others.
Robert Parums Duane Allman !
Susan
