I live down the street from the Carson Mansion / Ingomar Club, and I get to look up there every year at the pretty lights on the building during the holiday season. It is lovely and it's nice to see out my living room window. I do know some experiences that some people have had. They have been able to go inside other than members. Someone in my Christian congregation is a waitress there.🎉❤
Oh my gosh, what a video! That was so informative and oh my, those beautiful homes. I grew up in a Victorian home that was not as Grand as those, but no money was spared in quality. How lucky I was to grow up in such a home.
My husband and I went inside the Pink Lady when construction crews were trying to repair it several years ago. It was in bad shape, but still some of its former beauty remained in the fireplaces and stained glass. Unfortunately, Eureka has a very bad drug addiction problem and we saw lots of homeless people there. We love Ferndale and saw your episode!😊
That Ingomar Club location is so beautiful. Looks almost like something you would see in a very high budget movie. Jeff, this was a very amazing show. Thanks so much for all of the information. I found it all on Google Maps and that entire area is spectacular. Thanks!!
My boss was a member of the Ingomar Club. I've had the privilege of wandering around inside the Carson Mansion several times. The Widow's Watch is awesome. Thanks for posting. (Even though seeing Eureka creeps me out. 😶)
Eureka is actually a very nice place to live other than the homeless situation everything else is doing pretty well. PRETTY nice really. The roads are right now being repaired and improved. I live here and I really really like it. Like I said the only thing that is a little scary is the homeless population. A lot of them are on drugs and they can be scary at times.😢 Old town is close to where I live and the shops are amazing the ice cream down on the pier is fabulous. The views are magnificent so many wonderful places to visit right here close to Eureka. This video showed three of the nice victorians in the area but there are hundreds. Driving through the streets you will see so many beautiful victorians and a lot of them are very well maintained.
Great video and commentary. The Carson Mansion is the crown jewel of Eureka. The Pink Lady is also a timeless beauty. I am so happy that these two jewels have been so well cared for and I hope they always will be.
Actually; the pink lady needs to be painted very badly.😊 But they did build a very beautiful fence around the house they did some gardening in the backyard and they really fixed up the front yard,.. it is nice, except for the new paint job needs to be done soon.🎉❤
The size of California is monstrous. Amazing how this part of California is in the Pacific Northwest. Another quality video. Saludos desde San Diego, California
The Ferndale Cemetery, south of Eureka is outstanding. The town itself is a great place to visit, very victorian, but i always take visitors to the cemetery. Its just TOPS.
Those Victorian houses are absolutely stellar! I was a docent at a small, by comparison, Queen Anne in Los Angeles years ago. I dressed in authentic Victorian clothes and wore my great-grandmother's necklace and brooch and my grandmother's rings to add to the authenticity. It was great fun! Loved this episode, Jeff! Pretty creepy, those emptied vaults. I wonder what that's about? It took place early in wartime... hmmm. Looking forward to the next adventure!
Hi . The Victorian homes are so beautiful . Glad there are still some around to see . Thanks for vlogging them and telling the history of them . Take care . Deborah 🇨🇦
You two hit it for me going to the redwoods and Eureka, the area is fantastic and I love the Samoa Cookhouse. We have eaten there a few times on our trips to the redwoods, my very most favorite place. I hope you had a chance to. I hear it is going under a major renovation now til May of 2024. Looking forward to the rest of your trip. I have made up my mind to get to the redwoods one more time, this next spring.
Nice video. The inside of the Carson Mansion is amazing with lots of wood paneling and inlay work. The newer part in the back is a large dining room built for group events. The tower was said to be used by Carson to look out over the bay and keep watch for any of his ships coming in. When you were at the maritime museum you looked right down at the museum where I volunteer. The Timber Heritage Association Historic Samoa shops and roundhouse. Lots of history there as well with old train and logging history artifacts. If you ever get back up to the area I could show you around. Great video, thanks!
Thanks for the nice travelog of my town! I was one of the recent volunteers at the Myrtle Grove Cemetery. The volunteers there have been the caretakers mowing the grounds and finding the buried headstones to stand up right ( once laid flat by the city.) The headstone of the veteran behind the shed was probably found to be misplaced over the years and will eventually be properly located.
Brings back memories! I lived on the Table Bluff Lighthouse ranch st the South Jetty. Was amazing & lonely for a youngster. The wind & fog were routine. It's very beautiful there-now and always!
Love the Carson Mansion... My dad was a member. Been all through the place several times and what a Dream House!!! I have a painting of it and one of Squaw Rock that was near our house in Requa CA. Both paintings were done by a local Native from Klamath California. Also have a few native baskets from the same Yurok family. How sad to see the cemetery totally unkept now, back yrs ago when we were living in the area it was well kept!! Most of my family is at the newer Eureka cemetery.. my aunt Elizabeth Fehely who taught Ronald Reagan in grade school and Herb Fehely who's parents were some of the first families to settle in Requa in it's first dsys of becoming a town. He was one of the early managers of the Golden gate Bridge. They settled in Klamath Glen and had a bar, restaurant, trailer park for traveller's and motel back then before the 64 flood took most of it out. Love your channel, wish you'd come visit Chico someday on your journeys..... 👍🏻 🎃👻🦇
Once again great show Sarah & Jeff thank-you! Ring that bell, I can never help myself from trying all the wind chimes whenever I'm out and about shopping.👍,🔔🛎️
When I was stationed in Lemoore in the Navy I had a girlfriend that I’d go visit on the weekends that lived in Eureka. She had a Jaguar XKE, but I really did like her! The girl I mean. Eureka is a lovely town. Great video!
Not a member, but I've been inside the Ingomar club. There is a picture on the hallway wall looking north east of Arcata. And there are huge redwoods as far as you can see. No highway, no houses, nothing. I appreciated your innocence as an outsider to the area, seeing it though a different eye.
Thank you for talking about the tug Ranger. My great grandfather was the captain of it for many years Captain C. M. Peterson and his first engineer was my wife's great grandfather.
What a nice surprise, you visiting my home town! Even though I lived there the first 36 years of my life, I still learned a few things I didn’t previously know from this video. I was raised in a house just behind the Myrtle Grove cemetery. Kind of ashamed to say all us neighborhood kids used it as our playground for many years. No vandalism, but plenty of scares as we tried to see inside the spooky crypts! And you’re correct about the Ingomar Club not letting us riff-raff folks inside ever! Years ago, however, the Club apparently allowed police officers in. I know this because we lived across the street from one and he took us all to swim in the pool there one time. What a thrill, but we weren’t allowed inside, which didn’t bother us as long as we had the pool to ourselves. Thanks for the memories!
Sounds like you have a lot of memories of Eureka! It paints a very idyllic picture of your growing up years! Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed what you had to say!
Well done, yet again, Jeff and Sarah. Eureka would be the closest to my ideal area to live; sadly, I could not afford it let alone the strange street people I found there on my last visit/pass through. I do not recall you two doing a piece on Mendocino, another favorite place of mine that, sadly, I will not see again in this lifetime. Would you consider doing a piece on that? Thank you for your videos; I always look forward to the next one!
Very informative jeff and sarah, the victorian homes are awesome and well kept. the kitty was adorable and so sweet. Thankyou for the awesome video history of the coast of northern california, I enjoyed it.
Well done Jeff and Sarah! I should like to commend your bravery for flying the drone in the drizzle! I stop by the Carson Mansion every time I'm in Eureka just because it is THAT cool. Cheers!
I love these beautiful old ladies! It’s back when people really took pride in their craft. Somewhere along the way, we lost that. Thanks Jeff for a great show. Hometown girl, sayin’ hey.
Can you imagine living in one of those beautiful mansions. Would need elevators to go from floor to floor. Surprised to hear Lloyd Bridges Sr. bought one of the mansions. Sad about the cemetery and all those grave removals to another place. Great vlog.
no kidding, who knew, but you can't even see it apparently since it's privately owned, Jeff couldn't see it. I think it's something the state should buy and open as a museum. The pink house across the street is a bed and breakfast from their website. That also would be interesting to see, they are both classically Victorian.
Jeff thank you again for another interesting vlog. The Victorian houses were so beautiful. It was nice seeing Sarah along for this vlog. If I was there I would of pet the kitty also. I always look forward to your next adventure.
Eureka has/had several Victorian homes. Somehow a couple, the Squires, obtained a lot of them. Unfortunately they didn't manage them and they were set on fire by homeless or became so bad they had to be torn down. Recently the Lloyd Building, named after actor Lloyd Bridges, another Squire property had to be torn down. Did you eat at the Samoa Cookhouse? We used to have class reunions at the Ingomar Club, but I heard a classmate who was a member passed away not long ago so we can't get in anymore. I joined the Coast Guard in '61 and when I came home I found they had built two pulp mills at Samoa. The emissions, which they claimed were steam, blew right over Eureka. We called it the "Purple Fog." It got so bad it made us sick and we had to move.
Cool ! I've been to Eureka several times. There used to be an exclusive "Gentlemen's Club" in an old Mansion there. I believe that it had a canopy which extended down to the street. My father was a commercial salmon fisherman in Trinidad. I also liked going to the Samoa Cookhouse restaurant. I guess it was set up for the loggers in the area. Kinda set up like a Basque restaurant with long tables and food was served family-style. If heading South, West of 101 is a small Italian town of Occidental. There is a multi-generational family-run Italian Restaurant called Negri's. It serves family-style. South of there, on the road between Petaluma and Bodega Bay, is another family-style restaurant, in Valley Ford, called Dinucci's. If you like traditional Italian food, these 2 restaurants are worth a stop. Dinucci's is closed Tuesday and Thursday.
Great video Jeff and Sarah, thank you so much. One of these days, i'd like to make it to Eureka California. Where I live in Leavenworth,Kansas, we still have a lot of Victorian homes and buildings; so we're one of the few areas that still completely have homes that have been standing since 1850s.
Hello Jeff and Sarah, Thanks for taking your time and sharing this interesting story. And thanks for your travels. Happy Sunday! I hope your day was good.
Your shared stories sparked a road trip for myself and friend. We sought out the mansions and some of the other locations mentioned in your video. Thank you for sharing and inspiring curiosity.
Victorian houses are my favorite! I would love to see the inside of one. Whenever we are in a city where one is, I like to stop and just look at all the details! Enjoy your videos!
really Nice video Jeff and Sarah I bet there is a lot of hours doing research and these victorian homes are out of this world can't imagine the craftsmanship that it took to build them thanks for sharing keep up the great videos 💯🎃
Jeff I love the detailed information on the Victorians. Many years ago I visited Eureka and Ferndale and the best part was all the Victorian mansions. Please the more detailed reports the better. It is so sad you couldn't do indoor tours.
Hey Jeff and Sarah! This is a great video! I love learning more about California, even though I was born and schooled here, I just want more! Thanks for sharing. See you on the next!
Just a FYI there is a replica of the Pink Lady house on Catalina Is. I could not Imagin living in one of those homes as they look like Doll Houses or something like that
Interesting enough, the image used for my RUclips profile was taken during our visit to Eureka's redwood forest in 2009. As I have mentioned before, our "love of Victorian Architecture" is what brought us this far north. Viewing the Carson mansion in person was itself worth the effort of traveling there. Absolutey magnificent! Your camera work on this home was quite good, with focusing on some of the many details the structure has to offer.👍🏼
Great video, Jeff! I love Victorian architecture, and the segment is beautifully photographed and produced. I especially enjoyed your drone footage of the grand home. I also appreciate all of the research you do and the historical/biographical information you present. Thank you!
Beautiful video of the Victorian Mansions. Interesting stories relating to William Carson, and the Crypts. Seeing this video reminded me of years ago when I visited the McHenry Mansion in Modesto. Have you done a video at McHenry Mansion ? Hugs to you and Sarah. ♥
Please take a trip on the Madaket, it is a short but quaint cruise. They love to point out the boat has the smallest operating legal pub. & never forget - there are tunnels all over Eureka . I read a lot of Lovecraft, & it is not difficult, on a foggy midnight wandering Woodley Island or the pier off Broadway, or the waterfront around Adorni etc... to picture this as Lovecraft's westcoast Innsmouth, & the Carson mansion as the Marsten's mansion. The crypts, the graves, tunnels underground . Side note- if you want to see something to take your breath away, & appal you at the same time, the Simmering Friedhof & Church, with basement museum , in Vienna, Austria , has 330,000+souls buried there in sections .We visited late on a Sunday in November , knee-deep in dead leaves, amazed at the sheer size, amazing upkeep, & organization only Austria could offer . The apalling part was the forgotten Jewish area of the cemetery- either old&forgotten, or possibly vandalized . We loved the people there & do not want to see the worst in anyone - but look at what happened in the Eureka Myrtle cemetery . Although my beliefs may differ, i feel the dead & families of deserve far better than tomb vandals, raiders, robbers- whatever happened . Eureka ? Again- maybe they decided to leave their tombs& return to the sea. The movie Dagon reminds me of Eureka, & the Humboldt state college language exchange connection to both Germany & Austria is not lost on the significance of the mention of the pink lady mansion, or the Ingomar club . Safe travels....-bb+B 💙🎶💙🇦🇹🐈⬛⚘️🍁🍂🕸🍂
Another great amazing post, Jeff. Victorian style houses are so beautiful. There are some here in Knoxville Tennessee where I live. It's like going back in time. Thank you Jeff, for another incredible episode. Hope you and Sarah have a great week ahead. God Bless you both. 😊
We were staying in Ft. Bragg/Mendocino area in September and took a day trip up to Eureka to see it. Really impressed with the mansions. Didn't have time to get out and look at anything as the time to get there ate up most of our allocated time to look around. Good to see you covered more in-depth of the spectacular homes.
I wish I had the chance to visit that area during my time in California. Those houses are beautiful and the area too. I was recently in Ohio in Huron and Sandusky. I visited a couple of Islands on Lake Erie, one called Put-in-Bay, and Kelly's Island. The trip to the Islands on Lake Erie was neat because it was so big that you feel that you are crossing the ocean.
Wonderful informative tour! FYI on another subject. I loved the old Pollardville train as Growing up we ate there often during 70's- 90's. The Skunk train has restored it! It has a limited run every summer. Its called the Chuggin. I missed this years run darn it but its on my list! I bought a poster from the skunk train depot called The Chuggin and had no clue this was actually the Pollardville train until later😮😊. Blessings to u Jeff and Sarah.
Another very interesting video on California history. I have seen the Carson mansion several times, and I’m glad to see it is in great condition. Could you imagine painting it? Also interesting, the maritime museum has been moved. Used to be just down the street from the mansion. There also was a very nice zoo in Eureka. Did you and Sara have a chance to eat at the Samoa cookhouse? An experience. Thanks again.
Thanks for coming to my town!
It was fun while we were there! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this! So happy you were able to get over to our neck of the woods! Truly enjoyed seeing Ferndale and Eureka and looking forward to the next video(s) you have of the Lost Coast!

It just breaks my heart seeing those huge trees cut down. It feels like a death of a thousand years. I remember being in Eureka and seeing the mansion. Great video!
those trees were even older than 1000 years. As recently as the 1960s or 70s, the Sears and Roebuck catalogue had an add boasting about their "2000 year old redwood patio furniture".
Always agree on the trees.& with thousands of acres burning everywhere , San Fransisco's promise to have a park every block but rarely plant trees in the city, even with the Muir woods, still makes no sense to me .
You and Sara are simply AWESOME!
Wow, thank you! That means a lot. We’ll try to live up to that!
I love anything to do with history and the coast. This was a great watch!
Another great video. The detail on the houses is unreal. Hard to believe that it once sold for 35k. Thanks again.
Isn’t that one gorgeous house? It’s unbelievable to me!
I was lucky driving up the Coast as when I stopped to take a picture of the Carson Mansion it was a clear Deep Blue sky day!
So beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome!
I totally agree!
really Nice video Jeff and Sarah I bet there is a lot of hours doing research and these victorian homes are out of this world can't imagine the craftsmanship that it took to build them thanks for sharing keep up the great videos 💯🎃
Jeff I love the detailed information on the Victorians. Many years ago I visited Eureka and Ferndale and the best part was all the Victorian mansions. Please the more detailed reports the better. It is so sad you couldn't do indoor tours.
Great! Did you see our video on Ferndale?
@@jbenziggy yes of course.
Those re beautiful buildings. Thank you, Jeff, for all the information on these wonderful homes.
My pleasure! Thank you Jesse!
Hey Jeff and Sarah! This is a great video! I love learning more about California, even though I was born and schooled here, I just want more! Thanks for sharing. See you on the next!
Just a FYI there is a replica of the Pink Lady house on Catalina Is. I could not Imagin living in one of those homes as they look like Doll Houses or something like that
thank you again for another educational and very interesting video.
Great video, I've never been to Eureka, but it's now on my bucket list.
Interesting enough, the image used for my RUclips profile was taken during our visit to Eureka's redwood forest in 2009.
As I have mentioned before, our "love of Victorian Architecture" is what brought us this far north. Viewing the Carson mansion
in person was itself worth the effort of traveling there. Absolutey magnificent! Your camera work on this home was quite
good, with focusing on some of the many details the structure has to offer.👍🏼
Thanks, Lee! I not only appreciate your love of Victorian architecture but how you received this video! It was fun!
Great video, Jeff! I love Victorian architecture, and the segment is beautifully photographed and produced. I especially enjoyed your drone footage of the grand home. I also appreciate all of the research you do and the historical/biographical information you present. Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!
Fascinating ❤. The old growth trees were so incredibly large. Interesting video.
Yes they are!
Such beautiful houses Could you imagine living in one
I can't imagine cleaning it either! LOL
Nice old houses so much detail .
Really great video Sarh and Jeff loved it very much and thankyou for taking the time
Glad you enjoyed it!
Such beautiful homes. Love these types of videos.
Glad you like them! The houses are gorgeous!
I'm gonna dream about living in the Carson mansion.....breathtaking!
It’s so beautiful, isn’t it? Something you might see in Disneyland!
such beautiful buildings, thank you for sharing with us, another awesome video Jeff and Sarah!!
Our pleasure!
Thanks for experiencing the city through our lens!
Excellent job thank you for another great video
Those houses were amazing! Great Video!
Thanks so much!
Been to Eureka several times but looks like there are some things I missed.... thanks.
Excellent work! Thank you both!!
Thanks again!
@@jbenziggy 👍👍👍
Great video!!! Nice work Jeff !!
Thanks!
Such a nice looking place….enjoy your travels n thanks for sharing…
Thanks for visiting again!
Wow that was kind of a creepy cemetery lol great episode and cat 🐈 thanks for sharing Jeff and Sarah 👍received the package thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Hey, did you get our envelope?
@@jbenziggy yes I received it thank you
