- Jeff and Sarah recently visited the town of Ferndale, California in Humboldt County and were awestruck by the collection of historic Victorian homes. The charming town was also the backdrop from the 2001 film, the Majestic starring Jim Carrey, James Whitmore and Martin Landau.
Jeff and Sarah also check out the town's historic cemetery and the nearby beach where victims of an 1860s shipwreck washed ashore.

As a native of Southern California, I am often amazed at how diverse California’s scenery is - from beaches to deserts and mountains, cities to rural areas - all in one state! Ferndale is truly a town trapped in time. Thank you for showing us around, Jeff and Sarah!
I totally agree! It is perhaps the most beautiful state!
I remember San Francisco and Los Angeles used to be safe and beautiful too.. the homeless and druggies are spreading.. California is sanctuary state..
@@Jripey13yeah Sucks what they've done to the place!
Yeah, so rural and remote. Best place to live!
@@jbenziggy looking only at the diverse geography and natural beauty I would have to say it’s the most beautiful state. Lived in Bay Area 50 yrs of my 58, met and married my wife, raised my kids but unfortunately it’s just moved too far from what we knew and loved. Kids couldn’t afford it and left so we followed them out of state.
Thank you Jeff love your channel and your content!
I grew up in Ferndale. My mother still lives there and I visit often. You said you noticed all the markers in the cemetery for the veterans. The local Boy Scouts put US Flags in all of the markers for Veterans Day. It’s really beautiful seeing all the flags knowing all those people served our country.
Has it changed much since the filming of 'Salem's Lot in the 70s? I watched an interview with David Soul once where he said that it was one of the nicest places that he'd ever seen and the people there were super cool.
@@josebro352hi there. No Ferndale is one of those places that never really changes. It’s stuck in time there. Sure the shops have changed over the years, but all the buildings are pretty much the same. The house that was on the hill was fake. It was build over an existing home on the hill. All the people that live here are the coolest. So friendly. I definitely suggest you take a trip there sometime. Ferndale was all so in the movie Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman and also The Majestic with Jim Carey.
A small town with a fascinating history. Also good to see Sarah back in the adventures.
Thank you, Jim! I l love when I can include her!
@@jbenziggyAwwe, such a good husband ❤
Ferndale is an architecural treasure trove! And a backlot to boot! I love old towns like that. The only place I have been with a comparable number of Victorian homes still standing is Lynchburg, Virginia. Thanks for the tour!
Thanks for sharing. My daughter graduated from Humboldt State with a degree in geology. She fell in love with the area and has side jobs throughout the county with Ferndale being the home to some of her clients, not to mention a lot of earthquakes, as 3 tectonic plates meet near Ferndale. Black sand beach, the town, and the cemetery are awesome landmarks.
Ferndale is a quaint small community that has the look of European communities. It looks alot like parts of Ireland.
Thanks Jeff and Sarah for showing us Ferndale and all the nuances of the area.
That old bank saw alot of gold come through; it would be nice to go back to gold coins again.
In 2009 I was on a road trip from Willetts, (gateway to the redwoods) to Crater Lake, I heard about Ferndale and had to stop and spend a few hours there. So glad I did. Beautiful town and I appreciate how you always have those insightful stories to convey, Thank you, Mr. Jeff!
Hi Jeff and Sarah! I had no idea that Ferndale was such a cool little town. Thanks for taking us along. Sarah, don't sell yourself short. True, anybody can point a camera and take a video, but the ones who stand out are the ones that know what they like and capture it. 🙂 My best to you both and thank you for all the hard work!
Thank you so much for your encouragement and your support. We enjoy visiting areas and highlighting what we find on our channel and we always appreciate the time you invest into watching.
Your tours of small town California are among your best work. I really enjoy them. Thank you for all the time you spend researching, shooting and editing these.
I could handle being trapped in time in that beautiful town. Amazing!
You and me both! Thanks! Let’s hope Ferndale stays just as unspoiled as it is currently!
Hi Jeff. Always better when Sarah is with you.
Been to Ferndale, my wife and I(today is our 40th wedding anniversary!) absolutely adore the architecture. In the 80s thru the 90s we were
very passionate with Victorian architecture, still are today just a bit subdued. I did my best transforming our 1948 Lakewood Ca. track
home into a Victorianesque home. And did a damn good job at it. Enough so that our home inspired neighbors a mile down the street to
do the same with their home. Their rendering was beautiful, perhaps maybe a cut above ours?
We also strolled through the Ferndale cemetery during our visit there(2009). Terrific episode guys, see you on the next one.
You sound very inventive! I did some significant home remodeling myself so I know the effort it takes! Happy anniversary to you guys! Good for you! Glad you liked the video!
Neat little town, I remember touring that graveyard in the pouring rain once. It was a strange and depressing experience.
I love the attention to care and the value put on these beautiful historical buildings by the community! Just gorgeous!
Another awesome video... Enjoyed watching. So much history in this town, even more from the cemetery. You and Sarah do a great job bringing us history of places I've never heard of or know anything about. Thank you both. Have a great day Jeff and Sarah. 🇺🇲
Thanks so much!!!! Much appreciated sentiments!
Very beautiful part of California’s coast. No mention of the many earthquakes over the years, but the community always survives.
I was there for the big one in '92. No fun.
I grew up in Humboldt county and lived in Fortuna for a few years. You should go back to Ferndale at Christmas time. The whole town is decorated like in one of those Christmas movies.
Thank you for the tour. I spent a couple of nights there a few years ago. We had dinner in the Victorian Inn. We browsed downtown, and visited the Museum. It's every bit as charming as it appears in your video.
I enjoyed this video a lot. I lived in the area in 1978-9 and worked at a small naval facility that used to be on the bluff above Centerville Beach. I well remember the excitement when they filmed Salem's Lot and had a house 'burn up' for the movie. It is still a beautiful area and I'm really glad to see it has retained its small town charm.
I believe the town will look the same in another 50 years! We can hope so!
They demolished the base years ago.
Hi Jeff...
63 years old , all of a sudden over here.
Humboldt is the best. Behind Maui Waui !!!!!
Ahhhhh...remember when.
I took my son to Ferndale last September in 2022. We went camping north of Eureka in Klamath, that's where we found the old WW2 radar station.
We stayed at the cute hotel behind the red store. We were only there for two night and fell in love with the small town and the people.
The owner of the store and hotel was so friendly and welcoming.
If you were to go pass the cross on the beach, to the south a few miles, there used to be an old military installation. There's no buildings anymore but there's a trail with signage that talks about the history.
There's also a beautiful overlook a mile or so up from there. I bought hotdogs and drinks from the red store and we had a picnic while enjoying the scenery.
The mexican restaurant has amazing food, we ate there twice.
We really enjoyed spending time in a few of the small towns up along the cost in the redwoods. I love the small town feel and everyone we met along our trip were so friendly.
Ferndale had an earthquake about a month after our visit, glad to see them recover from it.
Glad you got to visit. You did great as always finding more history. There's so much of it up there.
Love all the gingerbread on the houses and buildings. I've been through Fermdale a few times, but for some reason never stopped to look around. Thank you for the tour. So happy to see Sarah again too! As always spotting some wild life! 💗
Significance of coins on Military grave.
A penny means you visited. A nickel means you and the deceased veteran trained at boot camp together. A dime means you and the deceased veteran served together in some capacity. A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that veteran died
When I lived in California I took trip up to those redwoods and even camped at Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. I never went to Ferndale even though I heard so much about it. I've always wished that I had gone there. Well now I feel like I have gone there. Thanks so much for taking so many of us with you!
Jeff and Sarah, thank you for spotlighting this quaint town. ❤
I think Sarah is very talented . She can push ‘Go’ on a camera . No one else in history has ever been able to even find the ‘Go’ button on their cameras. Congratulations Sarah!
What is the "go" button called? I almost said pull the trigger...
Go button it is 😁
What a cute little town. Loved the movie Outbreak. I'll have to watch it again after seeing this. Sarah is an old name. That's why there are so many in the cemetery. The old bank with the teller windows still in place was really cool.
Very nicely done Jeff. I was raised in the area and have visited Ferndale forever. Great place and wonderful people. Had lunch with a priest at the Cemetery when i was a kid. Always loved it there, very peaceful.
Very cool! I can’t say I’ve ever had lunch in a cemetery, let alone with a priest!
Ferndale! I loved visiting this charming town when I lived in Northern California. ❤❤❤❤❤ California
Me too!! Sarah loved it too!
Jeff and Sarah, Thank you for the tour of Ferndale! I really enjoyed this.
I lived in Arcata in the 80s to attend the university there. Met my wife there. We have visited Ferndale, but not in the detail that you did in this video. I just didn’t know all this history. But now that I’m older, I have a deeper appreciation of historic towns and take time to learn about them. Thank you for taking me down memory lane and showing stuff I missed. 😉
Northern Cal has an unusual vibe! I loved it. Ferndale has a ton of quakes daily out in the ocean!
FYI for anyone visiting, if you have a car or a small truck you can drive up through the cemetery, when the gates are open. Steep climb to the top.
Great little coastal victorian town! Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh this brought back so many memories for me. My boyfriend in the late 1980’s took me there for a visit, we lived in Fort Bragg, CA. Got a beautiful pair of amethyst earrings for Christmas from there that I passed on to his daughter. It was a wonderful small town to visit and the history is wonderful. Thanks for the memories
Thanks for sharing that, Stephanie! Aren’t memories great? If we could afford it, Ferndale would be on our list of places to possibly move to!
Loved it all. Ferndale is now on my list of beautiful towns to visit. Again, thank you for sharing this with us all.
Our pleasure! Hope you make it up there! Thank you!
I was just there 2 1/2 weeks ago. Love Ferndale :))) The cemetery is beautiful in the spring time when its green and the rhododendrons are blooming.
What a beautiful area and it was also nice seeing Sarah. thank you!☕️
Ferndale is such a quaint town! If we could afford it we’d consider moving there!
Wow ! Great job you 2. I was totally surprised of all the History this little town has. Loved this. ❤ Sarah and Jeff Thank you.
We love Ferndale! We stayed in the gingerbread mansion for our anniversary last year. And also visited that great cemetery.
How was your stay in the mansion and what did you think of the town?
With the exception of all the movies filmed there and near a the ocean, it reminds me so much like a small town that I spent many years as a child living in Michigan. Definitely a beautiful area. Thanks for sharing.
Door County Wisc., too.
Born and raised in CA, and traveled all over the state with my parents...but somehow, I've never been to Ferndale. Thanks for the tour!
Thanks so much! Ferndale is out of the way so don’t be surprised that you haven’t visited! But it is a cute place!
What a cool little town with so much history💯 I'm so jealous of Guy growing up in such a beautiful place.
Thanx for sharing 💯
Ferndale is a wonderful place to visit, i lived in little river California and traveled there often
11:25 I used to think an anchor is linked to the person's work or love of the sea, but when I noticed it on various gravestones in Switzerland (far away from the sea, deep in the mountains) I learned that it is a classic symbol for stability, constancy and faithfulness. Enjoyed watching, as always :)
Enjoyed the video! Good to see Sarah again! Thanks guys!
Our daughter went to HSU and everytime we see her going to Ferndale is a must.
I've wanted to go to Ferndale for many years, and one day I will. It's a long drive from Southern California. Until then, I'm glad I can enjoy wonderful videos like this one. Thanks for sharing, Jeff, and it was good to see Sarah again.
P.S. I just ordered a shirt.
The reason we have not visited this area of California is because of the distance. It was like 6-1/2 hours from central California! You’d have to make a vacation of it from your part of Southern California. It’s an effort that would more than pay off! We always appreciate your input!
@161papa- even from the Bay Area it’s not an easy or short drive. It’s worth the time to drive the coast and explore, it’s very different from SoCal and even the Central Coast.
Nice place, have to visit there sometime for sure, Hello Sarah 🙂
Your wife is being too humble!! She is talented.
Another wonderful episode! I used to travel through that area on my way to the Hoopa Indian Reservation where I was training tribal members in toxic waste handling. (They cleaned up the old paper mills). Never spent time in Ferndale. Now that I saw your video, I am definitely going back with my wife to see it. Thank you, Jeff and Sarah!!
This was very interesting from beginning to end. This town has so many fascinating substories. Thank you for taking us along on this excursion, Jeff and Sarah. I know there's a lot of research involved. 🛣 🌊 🪦 🏡👏🏻👏🏻
What a BEAUTIFUL little town !! Thank you for taking us there ! What a kick that Guy Fieri grew up there ! Never knew that !
Glad you enjoyed it! I didn’t know about Guy being from there either until I did this visit! He’s kind of a good legend California. He visited our hometown one time but we missed him.
Hi Sarah and Jeff. What a beautiful town. I love to see towns that have not been "modernized". Michigan has a Ferndale too. It's a suburb of Detroit. It's too new to be this beautiful. I wonder how common that name is for towns. Keep finding these towns and I will "see" you next week.
Thanks! There is also a Ferndale in Washington state too! Beautiful town!
There is something so relaxing and peaceful about visiting a remote area. I love history and I enjoyed the Hobbit and Victorian house. I remember that Dr. Pepper commercial. TY for another great video. God bless. 😇👍💕♥️
Love learning history about old towns. Jeff you and Sarah do a wonderful job. It's amazing what movie crews will go through in order to make a movie. Anyway appreciate your effort and appreciate your channel.
You should have seen the false front movie set used for the Back to the Future III movie. I saw it before it burned down but it was out in the middle of the wild. Thanks again for the view and comments!
love love those older houses
One year, stressed from my job & needing a break from the unusual Lompoc heat, I drove the 1 to Eureka hoping to see the 'painted ladies'. Hated the town, took forever to find the miniscule free zoo, but did discover an overwhelming dahlia garden (a never to be forgotten experience!). Didn't get any rain or cool weather until the night before I left. Heard of an antique show in Ferndale, so peeled off the highway & wished I'd known of it first. Sigh. Was hoping to add a few more Mission tours to my bucket list on my way home, but it was scorching that October, so came on home in disgust.---What a kool fountain!!!
Another great video! Thanks you for taking us along for the ride, Jeff and Sarah. The siren going off in Ferndale reminded me of being a young kid in the small Oregon town where my grandparents lived and and my mom grew up. The fire department there was volunteer and seeing as it was the '80s, they didn't have the pagers they do now. The way they alerted the volunteer firefighters of a fire or other emergency, was by using the air raid siren, as it was so loud it could be easily heard outside of town. It brings back a lot of memories hearing that. If only I had a DeLorean I could use to go back in time, lol. God bless and Godspeed.
Jeff, again an interesting and nostalgic one. I especially loved the Dr. Pepper commercial. I always loved watching it and wished I could be a Pepper too. Once again, your choice of music adds so much more.
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s hard to believe so many years have passed since those Dr. Pepper commercials! I was in high school then!
I live in Modesto,Ca and love the local history you present. I will add Ferndale to my list of places to visit.
Took a trip to Avenue of the giants to see the trees 2 years ago, Stayed in Fortuna, stopped by Clendenen's Cider Works but they were closed. checked out Eureka for a bagel and coffee. Got gas at Costco and some local beer and local roasted coffee beans. Stopped by Ferndale on the way back home. Had some beignets at Fat Annes. Saw the rubber duck at the blacksmith shop Huell Howser saw so many years ago, checked out the cemetery and shops too. Lucky those homes were untouched for us to see and enjoy. Must visit Ferndale again, didnt see this Hadley garden. Thanks for sharing. Road Trip with Huell Howser episode 149 also came here many years ago.
A town that embraces and keeps its roots and architecture alive. I love it. The area is stunning and the stories are great.
Couldn't agree more! Thank you!
@@jbenziggy A side note: From the time I discovered your channel, I've been working my way through from the oldest to the newest. Sometimes I cheat and watch a new one before I have come to it in the chronological order. Anyway, i usually watch via my 'smart tv'. And at the time I am watching there isn't an opportunity to comment. So I go back through on a tablet or computer and make comments. That's why you'll see a number of comments at once from me. My husband and I watch all your offerings and enjoy learning so much we didn't know before and learning more about things we had some idea about prior. Thank you for your channel.
Great to see n hear from Sarah again.
Yes! She adds so much!
What a beautiful place! Happy Sunday!
Thank you! You too!
Nice to see you made it to Humboldt County. I live in Arcata so maybe we passed each other ion the road. I my last career I worked on several buildings in Ferndale. All of them are very interesting. Yu almost made it to the old Navy Base on Centerville road. Now de-comissioned it was a product of the cold war tracking submarines at sea. Lots of other interesting places in the county if you ever get back, Eureka, Arcata, Samoa, Ferndale and Garberville all have interesting old buildings. Thank you for sharing this part of California!
We visit here often with family, that live here, and friends that come to visit. There are many occasions happening year long. We are very fortunate. thanks
Hi Jeff n Sarah.. great lil place. Every year at this time I’m up in humbly county. Couldn’t make it this year. Thanks sharing.
I know Ferndale well. A brother lived on Berding street for a few years. I remember when Outbreak and The Majestic were filmed. It was difficult to get to work when they were shooting. I remember the front of the Ferndale Rep theater was used to some extent, actually. They added all the neon for the film.
Thanks
I love seeing Sarah with you again.
On weekends, it is packed with visitors.
Jennifer here ... I have been to the Ferndale Cemetery. I lived in Fortuna for a short time while I was in the California Conservation Corps.
What a cool little town!
I love Ferndale...and best vid I've seen about the town.
Wow! Thank you! Do you live there or nearby?
@@jbenziggy Thank you for your response.
I live on the Delta, but love camping and the water sports of Humboldt. As a former dairymen I have special affection for the region
Keep up the great work!
Boy I wish I could travel around with you guy’s, America is a wonderful place to see.
Loved this look at Ferndale. It’s been many, many years since I was there
Been across the US many times & been thru a lot of towns,Ferndale always was and remains my favorite place I have ever been!❤
That’s special for someone to say that about a town! Thanks for the comment about Ferndale!
Hi Jeff and Sarah!! I absolutely loved Ferndale. The charm is just unbeatable. I also remember how haunted it was I remember doing some photography one room school house just outside of town. Had a large swing in the front. There was not one lick of a breeze at all and while I was there, taking pictures, the swing started swinging on its own. I decided I was done and quickly exited stage left.! The Victorian houses are actually phenomenal aren’t they? Thank you so much. I totally missed the cemetery. I would’ve loved to of seen that. Beautiful history. Thank you Jeff. LIZ from your hometown
We loved the old houses! Too bad that we missed the old schoolhouse though. Happy to hear from a fellow Modestan!
Nice to see Sarah.
Thank you! I love when she is able to participate!
Sarah cracked me up 😂 I know how to press the camera for go. That sounds just like me, take a photo, send a text and watch you tube. That’s my brilliant technology knowledge 👍
Beautiful little town, enjoyed coming along. Thank you both. ❤️Jodie 🇦🇺
What a beautiful town, Jeff and Sarah. Thank you so much for sharing. I live in Leavenworth, Kansas and we have a lot of the same type of style, buildings and homes. It always amazes me that a lot of the same buildings that you see from early decades from the previous century are still standing. Thank you so much for sharing. And maybe one of these days, I'll be able to go out and see that town.
Great job Jeff. Loved looking at the old buildings.
You and me both! Thank you!
Loved your visit to Ferndale. Inspires me to visit myself.
Great video and tour of Ferndale! My husband and I stayed at the Gingerbread Mansion several years ago and enjoyed our stay and visit through Ferndale, including the cemetery. 😊
Thanks for the tour of Ferndale, true they don't put up buildings like they used to. Interesting history for sure.
My favorite place to visit in Ferndale is the Golden Gait Mercantile! So glad you all enjoyed your visit!
So cool! Love that town!
Oh my gosh!!! I am so delighted to see this video about Ferndale because I’m always seeing Ferndale on the maps for earthquakes. I’ve never been there so now my eyes can see this beautiful city through your video. I thoroughly enjoy historic places, buildings, homes, cars, everything. Thank you so much History Hunters for an amazing video and the stories you tell about my beautiful home state California.
You are so welcome! Thank you, Emily! We just loved visiting that little town!
Next time your in the area you should consider talking about the 1860 Wiyot massacre.
It is always fun to see visitors checking out places close to where I live. Glad you came and enjoyed Ferndale! It's a great place. But while you pointed out the IOOF building, you missed the Masonic Lodge just up the street.
It’s a lovely town. I’m sure the residents there feel as though they have the best kept secret in California!
husband speaking age 80 8:15 - squirrels have been fed, eating mush and hot coco In Blaine, Wa. the small town noon
siren still goes off. If it is going to be use for more than one emergency then they should have different sounds like a steady
blast for maybe 15 sec a couple stop and 15 again - get out of town, short blasts for something el
What a beautiful town! Thank you Jeff and Sarah! I love that part of the country, the redwoods and ferns would be my ideal place to live and finish out my days. I'm disappointed that my travels never took me through Ferndale.
thanks to you both for providing us with knowledge about our beautiful state. You are much appreciated!!nJim&Angie
It's no wonder why i absolutely Love your channel. History should always be remembered because, in a way, it is the foundation of our present, which will in time not only be our future, but also will be "history". Hope that made sense.
Good to see you and Sarah both out and about. Hope you're all doing well.
Looking forward to your next episode.
God Bless you all.
Just beautiful. Thanx Sarah and Jeff. 😊
Our pleasure! Thanks, Red! Hope it was fun to watch!
I've wanted to go to Ferndale ever since I saw The Majestic. It looked like a great town with such fantastic energy. So glad you did a video on it!!
And I was raised in Kneeland CA. First through eight in a one room school. Sadly had to leave the mountain in the summer of 79 😢
Great video, I really love that town!! 😍
A cute town. California has many interesting sites place to visit.
We agree! This was our first time seeing this town! Thanks for watching!
That was a great visit. Learned some interesting tales from you. Have been there before, but decades ago! Glad it has been kept up! I love your cemetery walks, thank you!
