Sistagals: Australia's Indigenous Gay and Trans Communities

  • The remote community of the Tiwi Islands, located 80km north of the Australian mainland, has a thriving gay and trans community known as the Sistagals. More than 5 percent of the Tiwi population identify as a Sistagal with most of them living publicly as women and observing local Indigenous traditions. In this episode of Australiana, VICE embeds with the Sistagals to explore the intersection of traditional culture and gender identity. We follow the story of Laura, who at the age of 33 has been awaiting gender reassignment hormones since she was 10 years old. Her access has been complicated by the island's limited access to doctors, let alone hormone treatment. This documentary explores the push-pull the Sistagals experience living on their remote Tiwi home, while wanting to find love in the city and start families of their own.

    The confidence that blooms from these beautiful souls, absolutely amazes me. I know it must’ve been hard for them growing up to be accepted by how they identify themselves and I will never understand it myself but you SISTAGALS shine and glow bright and it showssss !!! As a male, I ended up doing drugs around 15 1/2 and got clean 10 years later. Even getting clean my testosterone was 93ng/dl and the average is 240-800. So my testosterone was at 1/3 of what it needed to be naturally and I got on the testosterone shot. As a cis male knowing I needed it, I could only imagine being trans and needing hormones. That has got to be hard knowing you need something your body can't produce in order to feel normal. I'm so proud of Laura, I hope she succeeds more ways than one.

      @@Scrapla1 the only thing a child is getting until puberty is blockers which is reversible and just pauses a puberty they don't want to experience and don't align with until they are at least 16 and can make a more informed decision for themselves around irreversible hormones like estrogen or testosterone.
      You are just repeating bullshit claims spouted by conservative media.
      Also kids are not getting gender reassignment surgery, you do realise that shit is like over $90k in Australia and over $40k even in Thailand.
      Only a very small percentage of trans people even get bottom surgery because it's too expensive.
      You want nothing more than to force trans children to experience an irreversible puberty they can not take back which just leads to higher suicide rates.

White people have gone into indigenous places and created havoc and death-far from creating, they have been destructive forces. I suspect you’re one of those fearful, weak, white men who secretly live in fear that they aren’t good enough. Work on yourself rather than trying to tear down others. Peace!

    This breaks my heart. They all have such simple dreams. Have a partner, settle down and live a normal life. Stuff so many of us take for granted. The saddest part is that for a lot of them, they'll never achieve their dream. It reminds me so much of Venus Extravaganza from Paris Is Burning. She professed the same simple wishes - a man, a home, a washer and dryer... and several months later Venus was murdered. It still makes me cry to think about. We must do more to protect our trans brothers and sisters. They want nothing more than to live a simple life like you and I.

      Doctors should inform about that, so they can take their own informed decision. Maby it's right for them, maby not,but we have to respect their decision. Doctors and their closest, can respectfully say their concerns, in a loving way, but accept them for their decisions and them as people, if they agree or not. Everyone else, have no business telling them what s right or wrong. Just be polite and treat them as anyone else. Miss pronounce their preferred gender, is like insulting them, and I can't understand why it's so hard for some to accept that's what is respectful and even if they doesn't think it's right, isn't their well being more important than you demonstrating your own opinion, hurting them at the same time!?

      @fancyfeast5086 5 лет назад

      NORTH Line I don’t understand what you are saying as I have said specifically that their well being is more important than others opinion but there’s a difference between opinion and fact. With surgery and hormones that don’t belong in the body at the quantities that are given to them there are great risks and complications but as far as mental health experts and medical professionals are concerned they say the benefits outweighs the risks..the benefits being that the patient isn’t going to take their own life because they can’t be the ‘gender’ they prefer..so why not give them the next best thing? Risky medication and surgery that could kill them?..it’s a double edged sword regardless. Also if someone doesn’t want to address a transgendered person by their preferred pronoun then they have every right since this isn’t about what the transgendered feels, it’s about forcing others to perceive their reality. You don’t know unless you’ve seen it with your own eyes, I have and I’ve spent the last 20 years involved in this..not only my ex but others in the same circle. It’s not all rainbows and lollipops..far from it.

    I love how people over there often say 'mmmm' or 'yeah' after they complete a thought. It's like they're really backing up what they say. I've watched a lot of documentaries from Australia and New Zealand and a lot of people do it. Mostly women from what I've seen, but men do it too. I don't know why I like it so much.
    I'm happy for anyone to live in whatever way makes them happy. If it doesn't hurt anyone, it's of no concern to me. I want everyone to be happy.

Watching other melanated people under subjugated colonization makes me think of how 'we' look to others outside our own ideas. How tragic and disheartening it is to be dark skinned on this planet at this time. I hope it changes .

      It's not tragic to be dark-skinned, it's tragic that some people are afraid of dark skin. That they have a problem with it is the only thing that is tragic. But this also goes for those who have a problem with people who have pale skin. Racism exists in every race. I know this is a fact, because I was beaten quite a few times just for being white when I was a child. I too hope it changes, for all of us. Maybe one day people will see the simple *fact* that we are all family. ^-^

    This makes me terribly sad. Also, as a black woman in America I instantly see the devastation colonizing leaves behind on Natives. The Aboriginal people were never meant to be Catholic, it was forced upon them, just as Christianity was forced upon my ancestors. The poverty that millions of Native Islanders live in upsets me. From Hawaiians, to Haitians, to Jamaicans, to the Ivory Coast, etc. 😢😢😢

    As an Australian, I can tell you that the sistergirls are still very misunderstood. And Unfortunately aboriginal people in general are very misunderstood, judged and their culture is being distroyed. We have a long way to go to help these people, especially the isolated communities, such as the island I'm this documentary.
    Much love to the sistergirls

    I am now a grandma and I also have a gay son that I am very proud of. He is respectful of others and has a happy disposition 98% of the time. It wasn't easy for him to come out to his longtime friends but was accepted for who he is. One of his friends said: "It wouldn't matter. He's (my son) been there for us during rough times and we're glad to return the favor". I cried so much. I thought my son would hurt so much on the thought of losing his friends, and I hurt from that. But my gay son knew the good in his friends and treasured, valued them. In the end, it's not who you are but how you are with others and that's what counts.

    Australian aborigines are some of the oldest human ancestors still living today. I believe they have some of the closest ties to our older ancestors such as the African cavemen etc. I respect aussie aborigines and everything that they are and that includes their gay/trans community. They are living relics and that's awesome in itself. Gay/trans aborigines just means that being gay/lesbian has always existed since the dawn of human evolution.

      UserFT what do you mean by human ancestors? Ancestors are just relatives who have passed away long ago and saying human is as if they aren’t human themselves. They are very much human, an oppressed people, up until today, this is why I don’t like Australia and I’ll never go there. As close as South Africa is to it their racism and treatment of indigenous people repulses me. Also I’m sure you’re trying to be sweet but your comment is low key racist and ignorant. They aren’t ancestors they are very much alive and very much human. They just happen to look different, like how here in Africa we look much different to Europeans but we aren’t primates. Thanks

      @@prettyinpinky5937 You don't have to agree with what I said, but the facts are the facts. Some humans lineages are older than others and thats respectable. You're making trouble out of nothing. I didn't say they were primates, so the fact that you even mentioned that is wrong on many levels. Im sure if you questioned and denied how old people's lineages are, they'd actually be offended. Humans are humans, but some are older than others and the DNA doesn't lie.

    • @prettyinpinky5937
      @prettyinpinky5937 5 лет назад

      UserFT you said they were human ancestors as if they predate modern humanity, you’re basically telling them that they aren’t the current type of human that we have now, you do understand what the word ancestor means right? They are living now, currently breathing, they lineage may be old, as is mine, infact mine is older as I am African and live in Africa. But I am no ones ancestor YES as I live and breathe. Maybe buy a dictionary and also learn to phrase things differently so you don’t come across in a negative light. Get over yourself and learn some mastery of the English language. I was actually decent in my comment, I was frank and pointing out what you said cause I felt you were trying to be nice but worded it incorrectly and you’re now coming at me all bitchy?
