I got a ECOMM III Portable EFHW for my IC-705. I've used a doing the USS Tennessee Special Event Station back in February. Took my IC-7300 (used 40w output) along with that antenna and done FT8 with it. On 160, 17, 15, 12 and 10m, the SWR is low enough to use without a tuner. The other bands have to be tuned.
I'll have to check out this antenna when it's released. Having an antenna that doesn't require a tuner is a must for QRP radios, even better with a base station.

How do you tune an end fed half wave? Which band do I tune it on?
What was the length of the antenna wire?
I am sold on EFHWs. I have one from QRP guys and another from amazon. Both work well with my G90 and I have had nothing but compliments about the sound.
They are easy to build from scratch, too. Mine's completely home-brewed and it works a treat. I leave it set up all the time from my screened back porch, across the back yard and up into a tree about 25 or 30 feet up. I cut it for 40 meters and use it primarily for 40 and 20 with my 891.

@@tangle70 If anything, I tend to get more distant contacts broadside to the wire. Mine is pointing more or less North-North-East and I get more contacts West and East of my location in NC. But, I've gotten plenty of contacts into Canada and upstate NY as well as the Caribbean islands with it too. 73, KO4AZY

Aside from the name, how is this “coffee” antenna different from any other 49:1 EFHW? I’m totally cool with them selling a proven antenna, but to give it a name it has to have something unique. What is the selling point?
Not really sure what makes this 49:1 any different than others. Maybe a 150pf cap instead of 100?

Do they have a loading coil on the transmission line or a capacitor anywhere on the transmission line I know sometimes people will do that when they’re using CW
Nope. You can always add one if you need it. Those are usually when you make the wire for 80 meters. Adding the loading coil helps bring the freq up to the 75 meter portion and some say it helps sweeten the higher frequencies too but I haven't experimented with that enough to have an opinion one way or another.

Yes. The MFJ-1899T. And honesty, the Buddi Stick Pro doesn't excite me either. I have one sitting here that a friend lent me too. I need to take it out and see what the big deal is. I've used one a couple times but I wasn't the one setting it up.

Great video Mike! Seeing you use the 891, I'm thinking of picking one up for POTA. I've got a 7300 though, and wondering if the portability of the 891 is worth the difference, or should just use my 7300? Any advice? Im using IC-705 now, but the 10 watts struggles some days if conditions are bad, and dont stand a chance on a contest weekend.
I love my FT-891. I use it for portable ops in my back yard and a a secondary base station. It draws 1 amp on receive. I have 18 AH of LiFePo4 battery that lets me put out 50 watts SSB. The 891 is the most rig for the money. The DNR works great & the audio is good. I does need an external tuner.
Having both radios I can tell you that the 891 is still my favorite 100 watt radio to take portable. There is nothing else on the market that even comes close. Icom and Kenwood (where are they now btw?) don't have any new mobile HF radios. I don't think of the 7300 as a "rugged" "portable" radio. Sure, I have taken it portable and enjoy using it, but I feel I need to be extra careful with it. I keep it in a hard case for transport, I have side rails to protect it if it falls... The 891 is a work horse and I have beaten the crap out of it. It's fallen in the snow, the power connector is loose on the back, I throw it around. You just don't have to worry about it. Yaesu knows how to make rugged, portable friendly radios and I absolutely 100% would recommend the 891 over any other 100 watt radio on the market today (for mobile/portable). In the shack, I still want my 7300.
Why can you only put out 50 watts with your LiFePO4 batter?? You should be able to put out 100 watts CW/Digital with that.
