I love the haphazard urgency of this number,so on top of the beat everybody scranbling along like they're chasing a runaway shopping cart full of percussion instruments downhill.
I absolutely love how Martin gives Sco little nods of encouragement at the start ~ in what turns out to be one of the most incredible live performances I know of. Mind benders & total locks in jazz groove! Bless
MSMW The Movie! Starring Russel Crowe as Billy Martin, Robert Redford as Chris Wood, Vincent D'Onofrio as John Medeski and John Malkovich as John Scofield.
Had the pleasure of seeing MMW in a small club in Boston ca. 1990, glad they have gotten the recognition they deserve. And oh yeah, this has to be one of the hottest live jams of all time...
No doubt-many pedals have a Looper function added in,as it is so fashionable.I think Sco uses the Boomerang loop-so I think he is looping something, then plays it back, then hits the Reverse function(@1.34) and SOMEhow, it sounds like he is recalling smaller snippets of what he just looped, and triggering those-then alternates that w "live" playing.phew!!! pretty trippy!! He is certainly a master at this stuff-also heard ( to a slightly less psychedelic effect) on his latest-"Uberjam Deux".
MMW is 'f' good !!!... I saw them on last Java Jazz Festival 2012 (Mar, Jakarta-Indonesia)...It such a rock party, everybody wasn't sitting at their chair, they all were dancing in front of the stage...no no no, couldn't be more surprised until one of the audience gave the bass player a botol of a beer...COOL !!!! :D
I reckon its a combo of Chorus (boss), his Boomerang pedal (the secret i think) and a Digitech whammy along whith lots of bending etc! It says on his website his pedal etc so that my guess!
That's why I love Sco! He can play the most basic blues, straight ahead jazz, squeeze out a few raunchy rock licks here n'there, then get all freakin' beautifully weird with atonal chromatic semi-tones, pinch harmonics, insane string bends, and a quirky funky sense of rhythm...he can be anywhere in or on the beat he wants, whether it's behind, beside, over, under, or in front of the beat...or all at the same time if he wants. And his chording spans from a Barre GMaj chord to aliens are in the building chords!! He's got it, man! And I love how he just travels here and there and wherever the groove takes him, so he can play with any of the other groove cats he wants! Great attitude! He's real.
If you can't dance to this, you got no rhythm and no soul. Funky groove cool jazz...Miles would be proud of Sco and would fit right in with this group. Sco was obviously profoundly impacted by what Miles was doing when Sco was his guitarist. And MMW...off the hook, as always.
Well, you're right that on the CP tune he plays over the chord changes. He does so on some of the others also, tho it might not be as obvious since they don't actually change keys like the CP tune does in one spot. I selected a variety of tunes--some more in the trad jazz vein w/chord changes; some more open, groove based tunes, w/soloing over a single chord. I actually though you'd prefer the latter since you're a fan of MMW's free wheeling style. Oh well, to each his own...
@nassreiskulturen Unfortunately I have nothing more from that gig. Just because they never broadcasted anything more of them at the time. Its probably all recorded (and thus somewhere in a basement) but it never aired all live, because they switched between podia and prerecorded interviews during the broadcast.
I don`t know when it happened exactly , but when I started watching I was still preparing for a test - now I have my guitar on my knees...and I`m afraid I won`t stop for hours. But still - Thank you so much for uploading this PS: Do you have more material from that gig?
I recorded Billy's end of clinic solo a few months ago when he was in town. Pretty cool clinician, a great player, groovesmith, master of his craft, and a really nice guy. The video is here on youtube - Just check my video page... - Jiggs

I always loved MM&W, but felt they needed a lead instrument....not a bad choice, one of my top 3 favorite guitarists (Pat Metheny and Pat Martino are the other two)
"Lead guitar"? That's how you refer to the great John Scofield? He was soloing over the tune. (The tune HE wrote for his album w/MMW as the rhythm section.) Medeski solos after Sco, then Billy Martin. The teamwork is in evidence throughout.
woahhh! Does ANYbody know how he is getting that slippery, slidey, snakey kinda tone at approx 1:40?? really wild!! I think he is sampling himself, and playing it thru some Freaky-ass pedal.. but what , I am not sure..but... I DIG it.. the most!!!.. MMW are KILLin' it. as always! Soooo fonky...
this is just filthy. Sco is a dystopian hero
I love the haphazard urgency of this number,so on top of the beat everybody scranbling along like they're chasing a runaway shopping cart full of percussion instruments downhill.
playing guitar is like therapy... no matter how busy with everything else you are, it's great to put it all aside for a bit and just play
The most beautiful moment of the So-Hard Jazz Funk

Rotterdam made this possible. ;) The vibe of North Sea Jazz is amazing. ;) I never was there but I watched it some times on television. ;)

Anyone knows Scofield´s gear???? i mean his pedals, out of this world.
Boomerang Phrase Sampler for the looping, ProCo RAT Distortion for distortion. With the filter (tone) cranked.

You're absolutely correct !
Sco can play inside, outside, and everywhere !
He's one of the Greats ! (if not THE greatest )
Rick Winfield What about that crazy outro!!
That "outtro" is beyond my abilities ! I can pick up little pieces, but not much of it
Awesome !
Rick Winfield hey do you know what kind of pedal gave him those repetitions at the beginning? Delay or looper
perfect fusion :Q___

Sounds like an old tape echo peddle, or one of the newer models which can emulate some of the tricks you could do on the old peddles.

Sounded a little rushed at the start but they turned it into a really good performance, as they always do.

I guess it is a loop that he retriggers via footswitch. The looper function in the Strymon Timeline can do that.
