  • In this video I attempt to explain how I record high quality car engine and exhaust audio for my videos using my Lexus ISF.
It's my first "how to" video I have planned and I'm sure the quality of each video will get better. I had to use one of my old lapel mic so please ignore the bad audio. I've done my best to fix it up.

Learned something important like maximum spl, attachment device, position.. etc.
I've tried with the 2 small pin mic and stereo to two mono audio via modified 3.5mm splitter cable, and zoom h1n.
For the engine bay, I usually attached it close to the intake, but sometimes I do that near the battery to catch some transmission noises.
Due to budget issues, I can't go any further with the equipment.
But good to consider for the future upgrade.

How do you film around those mic’s? Do you just rig them to one side of the car? or is there a process in post where you delete them from the image?

I'm pretty sure they're just recording audio and don't worry about the mics being visible. Then you record a library of different driving styles that you can use when you edit the sound fx for the movie.

I’m confused where those mics were in the rollers you were showing

You record the audio then the rollers. Add the audio in in post on clips without the mics

You can also hide the mics on the side of the car you aren’t shooting rollers for, may take time to adjust the mics to hide them from view but people do that as well. I do at least. the extra work is worth the results so you have solid audio that matches the video as well.

Doing this same thing with a gopro and a media mod, what mic would you recommend? Going to be primarily used for drifting so i'm worried about audio quality with how loud it is.

If recording live with video then you want something small like the 4061 I mention in this vid

Ulanzi suction cup these days. A bit stronger than the generic suction cup

I have a question. How do i delete some tire and street noise? Wich Software do you use for filter and mix the audio sounds. I've got also your setup, but shure sm57 instead the rode mic. Its basically the same.

Best way to get rid of it is to not record the road. Be sure your mics are pointed across the exhaust, not down towards the ground. The sm57 is a great mic too. I use Adobe audition but rarely use any noise reduction unless I have to. Wind must be avoided when mounting too :)

Would it be possible to record audio for drag racecars in this fashion . Cars are going over 200mph and are loud 1400hp rotary’s .
