I owned a 73 Combi with the stock 1700 VW engine. Made about 70 horsepower on a good day on a fresh rebuild. At best it got about between 17 to 21 miles per gallon. I always wanted for horsepower and for that fuel economy the old 1700 was not a good solution. This is awesome! I loved this vehicle in all other aspects. Excellent suspension, great ground clearance, good brakes. The cargo area and camping package was fantastic. Power issues aside I think it was the best vehicle I ever owned. I wish I still owned it because I'd do this type of conversion for certain.

The man is a genius and seems like a down to earth person as well. I recently saw a video where he was describing his designing days back in the 60's and he started crying while talking about some of his former colleagues. The man is also in awesome shape for his age too. Must have something to do with being passionate about life.

In 1988 I was 18, and my Dad gave me his 1979 vw bus, with it's blown 2.0l, thinking that as I showed good mechanical aptitude I would rebuild the engine. First thing my mates and I did was bin that old 2.0l and stuff a Nissan 3.0 litre V6 in it. That bus ran happily for many, many years. Best vehicles ever! That radiator cap in the cabin was something scary tho, we ran a bleed line through the roof back to a header tank in the engine bay, it never ever overheated.

Amazing episode! 35 years ago I had the exact same model and re-powered it with a Subaru EA81, not as powerful as this V8, but a lot lighter. I used the VW for the exact same reason, getting a crew of hang glider pilots up to launch, here in Australia. The high CG with a lot of gliders on the roof meant that going up hill there was a lot of weight transfer to the back wheels, I used to surprise guys in 4wds with the load it would take up a steep dirt track. Wish I still had it, my favourite vehicle ever. Thanks Jay!

  • @ironymatt

My dad was a hang gliding instructor back in the '70s and early '80s in the Fraser Valley, and he used a Beetle(!) to transport his gliders. As a kid I had no clue how special those cars were.
He would carry up to 4 on his roof rack at a time - I always had to help him load them up - and I recall endless numbers of trips up a myriad of forestry roads and trails. Those things really did go almost anywhere.
I don't know if he ever carried 5 gliders at a time, nor did I realize they weighed almost 100lbs apiece! Either I was stronger than I thought or his were a lighter model than what Peter flew.

Mr. Brock is one of the coolest people on the planet. He's also one of the most humble people you'll ever meet. Anyone who really knows about cars and racing, knows who he is. As Jay noted, "he's automotive royalty", but you'd never know it. He's so understated and simply cool. I'm honored to live in the same city as he does and I've visited with him at length on several occasions. My greatest memory of him was when I visited his shop to pick up a BRE Spook spoiler for my 4G63 powered Datsun 510, and we started talking about oil cooler placement. It was 110+ degrees outside, and this legend lays down on the asphalt in his white Tommy Hilfiger shirt to look under my car. I wasn't sure what was going on, but his feedback on my build is priceless.
Thank you Jay for hosting this legend on your show. You might try to get some of his other builds on here for history's sake. Mr. Brock, you're amazing.

The B-O-P 215 engine. Of those the Oldsmobile was the one to get, at least that was the opinion back in the day. The Buick 3.8 liter V6 used the 215's engine architecture, that is a successful engine. For quite some time I had the urge to put an Olds 215 into a Volvo P1800, I actually went as far as getting an engine....There were hot-rodders who were putting small block Ford engines onto them, they made the P1800 into a car that was as fast as they looked.

You can tell a true car person when they get excited about everything and want to experiment to find solutions to the problems that are presented to them. Jay gets excited about basically anything mechanical so it's not a stretch to say he respects all cars (as has been proven by this channel) be it a super car or just quirky fun car. Mr. Brock here feels the same way, a legendary designer of so many icons that even today scream muscle or power yet he finds so much fun in something like this bus. To be fair it kind of screams power at this point literally but he really respects and enjoys the overall design and purpose of something as simple as this.
It's really annoying that today, like society in general, car collectives/groups are becoming more and more isolated over time bringing prejudiced reactions to anything but what they like/stand for. People need to just enjoy what they enjoy but also be open to other things/perspectives. You never know what kind of creative solution to a problem you can find pulling bits from all over.

The idea that you would think that is impressive is shocking. These vehicles were rated at 3/4 ton of cargo. The transmissions from them have withstood a lot of big motors in desert racing. And in stock form btw they were 72hp so only 3 times the power

In addition to all the info, your calm, positive way of speaking about the different cars is wonderful. There's no meanness or condescension. You find something good to say about all the vehicles, no matter where they're from. In the current political climate this is really reassuring! You simply make us feel better about the things we own....

This is crazy! earlier tonight I watched a segment of Peter Brock recalling when at 19 went to work with the Sting Ray, then at Shelby with the Coupe while giving credit to the guys at the garage he worked with who were instrumental in the project becoming a reality. Brock tearfully remembered Phil Remington.

I'd buy one in a minute if I could find one today. Putting the 215 Buick into it corrects the one shortcoming that I always felt the Bus had. Great video.

I converted one of these T2s in the late 1980s putting in a rover V8 3,5 liter engine, high jacker Gabriel shocks, 16 inch wheels and a gearbox with strengthened 3rd and 4th gear (I would have loved a 5th gear). Went for thousands of miles with my young family around southern africa without any problems. Possibly the most pleasurable vehicle I ever had.

When he said "Buick V8" I know it had to be the aluminum one. IMO, the Rover version is better in many ways as they solved the issues that made it a problematic engine for GM. Though I think the "off-road capability" aspects were a bit overstated here, Transporters are still much more capable in that venue than they might appear. It depends a lot on a person's definition of "off-road." By my definition and in my world, the Transporter is something that barely makes it past the trailhead.... regardless of how much power it has. Still, I remember in the 1970s, when I first started four-wheeling, grinding up a mountain trail that seemed difficult at the time. As I neared the top, I was feeling pretty manly. When I reached the top, I was deflated by the sight of a VW Transporter parked there. Was later impressed by how far a VW buggy could go up a rocky mountain trail. Still, when the going got very tough, there was no substitute for durable four-wheel drive, low gears and lots of ground clearance. At some point, the buggies were stopped. On the sand and in more open country, the situation was reversed and the light buggies could dance around the bigger 4x4s like those quick deer flies that nobody is ever fast enough to swat before they take a chunk-o-hide. I had a '71 VW Camper and seeing this made me nostalgic.
