    Whenever I am feeling ‘down’, or facing a challenge I believe I may struggle with; I listen to the incredible, inspiring Bill McRaven, humility and leadership in equal measure. The world then seems a little easier.

    This is a great message for someone who has been through a failure. Not everyone fails, but often times their leadership fails and they become the victim of that failure. I have seen people fail a safeway and were terminated, only to see them go onto becoming a police officer, firefighter or nurse, etct. Bottom life, is you are not always defined by the job you lost but what you do after that. Sitting and blaming a poor manager or company doesn't move you forward. Be who you want to be!

    In case people were wondering the job he was fired from was being Team Lead of Seal Team 6 Gold Squadron. Him and the founder/Commander of Team 6 Richard Marcinko did not see eye to eye on how the Team should be conducting themselves.

      To be fair, McRaven arguably had a more profound impact on the Special Operations community than Marcinko. Anyways, Marcinko was a bit of a dirtbag who ended up defrauding the government.

    • @xLisranda
      @xLisranda 6 лет назад +12

      The lack of discipline, arrogance, and "we are perfection" attitude that ST6 had in 1983 when all of this went down (That McRaven objected to) culminated at Granada in 4 of their best drowning (and never being recovered) and two recon teams failing their missions miserably because they forgot to pack vital equipment. One of the teams had to fight for their lives through the night until the Marines rescued them in the morning. The other had to retreat under fire and swim out to sea where they were fortunate enough to be rescued. That's the culture that Marcinko wanted and he paid for it. McRaven was fired the same year, shortly before these events. He has, in every place I've seen him talk about those events, still considered it his fault that he was fired. Not once have I found anything remotely close to a "I told them so" about the events. I don't consider it arrogance at all. I would say he did his job as a junior officer. His CO decided he wasn't the right fit for the team and removed him. He accepted it and moved on and attributed it to his own shortcomings which he worked to overcome.

    There is the difference between the self reliant and the dependent. The self reliant know that at times they are going to fail, but that it doesn't signify the end. They learn from their loss and push on. The dependent never learn this, being defeated at their first taste of loss or living in fear of same.

  • @sagecreekwitt3301

    He's an accomplished person no doubt. His eyes look as if he's slightly possessed with a sort of administrative idiological possession. He's Basically a manager, a leader to manager types. His type of personality, view following rules of organisations as the measure of one's character. He speaks of making one's bed as if it's of supreme importance. Maybe it is?? How one can further his own career is Always part of the equation in this personality type. Other interesting notes ; His degree is in "journalism". How many infantry legends were wannabe journalists? He was on the ground in the slowest time for seals after Vietnam. Which war was lost by journalists at the very time Mcraven wanted to be one. Those who kicked him out of his seal team leadership position had seen a shit load of combat in Vietnam. Whatever His fighting prowess his time on the ground in combat is minimal. Later in the Obama administration He let himself be promoted right after exhortation 17 debacle. This was an obvious strategy by Obama, to appease the seal community after that tragedy. Mcraven was all to happy to oblige. He's had a major impact on the teams. Many would argue for the worse. Look at team's reputation today because of the actions of individuals under his "leadership". Under Obama's hear no Evil see no Evil approach, he, Brennan, Clinton and the like, ran the seals "especially team 6" ragged. Often 4 missions a week. More than a few broke down. Many more were killed on questionable missions. The attitude was Better them and drones than send in Marines and face the political Consiquenses Of "deployed troops". Under his management, jsoc revealed many secrets. Some might argue this was benificial to their (Obama, Brennan, mcraven's etc) political careers . Juxtapose his personality to that of Chris Kyle. Who's room on his last deployment was dirty having an inch of sunflower seeds on the floor. Obviously he was busy cleaning his weapon. You can only think about one thing at a time and Chris was using his brain power to actually kill the enemy. Not "make his bed". Chris saw more first hand combat in a month than Mcraven has seen in his career. I think both these types of personalities are needed. But the politically correct, career minded type officer is repugnant to grunts. If I were in battle I'd definitely prefer the Kyle type and put up with the seeds.

    onevoicebecametwo.life was inspired by those who read "I Don't Do Slogans" and shared kind words of encouragement. Forgive my impersonal note, but if you go to "You Got Gold" under "My Back Pages," you'll find my appreciation of the spirit you provided. I gotta give a shout-out to the pooh-poohers of possibility too. Forever on the front lines of lowering the bar while I’m trying to raise it - you've been a constant companion almost all my life. Where would I be without you?
    Speaking of pooh-poohers, I recently got fired for dropping the hammer on my manager. After almost 2 years of dealing with his turbocharged hypersensitivity, hermetically sealed mind, piss-poor leadership, sloppy work, off-the-rails ego, and utterly blameless attitude - he crossed the line one too many times.
    You're gonna enjoy this - as a symbol for every jackass on the job that companies coddle and force you to put up with.
    And if you don’t play along . . .

  • @stevecochrane8799

    It was more complex. He was relieved of command because the entire team he was commanding had loss confidence in him and his commanding officer stepped in and relieved him. Most seals are very gung ho and he was more of pencil pusher posing as gung ho. Theres a reason why he spent most of his career in Washington and not in the field.

    I'm not sure he should be so understanding, given what his employer wanted him to do was probably illegal, if not very illegal. Marcinko had gone 'Rogue' and probably had control of the world's most dangerous, heavily armed biker gang ever - SEAL team 6. OTOH, SEALs were meant to be dangerous - thats why the saying was you kept them in a cage until needed ;)
